Athletics in Review Lynn University’s athletic programs continued to impress for the 2012-13 athletic year. Two new programs began competition to bring the Fighting Knights total of NCAA sponsored sports to 13, while the University also announced the addition of a 14th program, men’s lacrosse, to begin play in 2014. Of the 13 teams to take the field/court, eight reached the NCAA Tournament and four programs, men’s soccer, women’s swimming and men’s & women’s golf, competed for a national championship.

Several milestones were reached in 2012-13: Lynn the 20th & 21st national championships in school history and claimed its 29th & 30th Sunshine State Conference titles; Mike Perez and Rudy Garbalosa earned landmark victory totals; and first-year programs cross country and swimming competed in the NCAA Tournament.

All of the triumphs, achievements and successes of the Fighting Knights are detailed within this 2012-13 Annual Report but here is a sneak peek into this past year’s accomplishments: • • • • • • •

Men’s Soccer won the program’s fourth national title and Lynn’s 20th overall Women’s Golf won the program’s fourth national title and Lynn’s 21st overall Men’s Soccer claimed their 10th SSC title and 30th for the school Women’s Basketball won their first SSC regular season crown, and second overall, giving LU 31 in total Women’s Basketball earned their first NCAA Tournament At-Large bid, and second overall appearance Cross Country was reinstated after an 11-year absence and saw Gabriella Wuyke become the first runner to earn SSC All-Championship, All-SSC and All-South Region accolades In the first year of existence, the swimming program took 6th out of 7 teams at the SSC Championship, had two swimmers earn four medals, including a gold, at the conference tournament and competed in the NCAA National Championship where it finished 26th Mike Perez won his 500th match as head coach of the women’s tennis team and 900th career match between men’s and women’s programs Rudy Garbalosa won his 400th career game as head coach of the baseball team Niki Washington became the first women’s basketball coach to be named SSC Coach of the Year while also become the program leader in SSC victories Kira Harvey became the first women’s basketball player in SSC history to win Player and Defensive Player of the Year Lynn’s baseball program had a SSC Player of the Year recipient for the second consecutive year, marking just the fourth time that has happened in conference history The Women’s Golf team won its first NCAA South Region Tournament Martin Wehlert became the second male student-athlete, and third overall, to win the NCAA Elite 89 award while making Lynn just the fourth school in Division II history to have a consecutive winners in the same sport Lynn broke ground on Bobby Campbell Stadium for men’s & women’s soccer and lacrosse with the intended completion day of January 2014 Hired Brian Kingsbury to be the first lacrosse coach in school history Women’s Golf has a program-record five All-America selections

Athletics Strategic Plan Along with the success of the Fighting Knights’ teams, Lynn’s Athletic Department made significant headway in accomplishing its Strategic Plan. Among the initiatives met in the fourth year of the plan: 1. Increased the athletics graduation rate and NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Academic Success Rate.

2. Assembled a Task Force to review historical graduation rate reporting and prepare methods for consistently collecting and reporting this student data for future years.

3. Implemented a Student-Athlete Academic Support Services program inclusive of individualized course tutoring and academic coaching sessions for student-athletes atrisk academically.

4. Broke ground on the Bobby Campbell Stadium for men’s & women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse.

5. Established full-time assistant coaches in the men’s & women’s soccer programs.

6. Implemented an Excellence in Coaching Recognition program for head coaches to earn merit pay.

7. Established additional staff in sports medicine.

8. Implemented updated Fighting Knight logos for Lynn Athletics.

9. Entered a multi-year preferred athletics apparel agreement with Adidas.

10. Established an athletics branding and licensing agreement with LRG. 11. Implemented a voluntary summer strength & conditioning program offered to studentathletes.

12. Increased revenue generation for the athletics department by growing non-charitable, sponsorship revenues by 20% over the previous year.

13. Successfully implemented the second phase of the university’s sport expansion plan.

Hired a full-time coach to lead the new men’s lacrosse program.

2013 Hall of Fame The exclusive club of Lynn University Athletics Hall of Famers got a little bigger with the induction of four new faces at the Student-Athlete Recognition Awards Show. Four former Fighting Knights took their place among the school’s best and brightest, bringing the total number of enshrined to 46. Those inducted were four-time national championship golf and soccer coach Eric Abreu, women’s basketball standout Gulsah Akkaya, women’s tennis stalwart Monika Mastilarova and women’s soccer star Dorte Nielsen.

The Class of 2013 becomes the 13th class to be inducted into the Lynn University Athletic Hall of Fame. Men’s & women’s soccer and women’s tennis lead the way with eight members, followed by administrators/ coaches with five selections. Baseball has garnered five picks and women’s basketball is next with three. Men’s basketball, women’s golf, softball and men’s tennis have two honorees and volleyball holds one selection.

Facilities Lynn University made significant strides in 2012-13 for its facilities upgrades. Often times improvements can be behind the scenes but the Fighting Knights had several large rennovations puT forth through the use of its Blue & White funds.

The biggest addition was the groundbreaking of Bobby Campbell Stadium. Construction of the stadium, a lighted facility to include covered stands with a plaza area and seating for 500 spectators designed by the Gensler architectural firm, will begin in the summer of 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Additional enhancements include: • Rennovation of the men’s basketball locker room • Upgrading the men’s soccer locker room • Conversion of an old security shack into a new softball press box operations center • Adding a new Daktronics baseball scoreboard • Upgrading the department-wide commericial laundry equipment • Providing strength & conditioning consulting services for student-athletes • Team-issued equipment enhancements

Moving into the 2013-14 year, Lynn University has appropriated funds for the following plans: • Purchase a power rack for the swimming program • Facility enhancements at the new Bobby Campbell Stadium • Updating the women’s basketball locker room • Additional equipment to support Sports Medicine services for student-athletes

Student-Athlete Services Lynn University’s student-athletes had many opportunities to find success off the courts and fields this past academic year and as usual took full advantage of making the most of their resources. The Fighting Knights’ Life Skills Program had another successful year while student-athletes had the resources to take courses in personal development, career development, leadership and community awareness. In these workshop-based classes, students learned how to be successful during their careers at Lynn University, in the community and in pursuing a career outside of athletics. In the first-year personal development and leadership course, new student-athletes had a head coach or an athletic administrator as a guest speaker each week as all 11 head coaches and seven different administrators assisted in making the course a memorable experience.

Upperclassmen also had the opportunity of becoming Student-Athlete Mentors for the fifth consecutive year through the Life Skills programming and co-teach workshops for the student-athletes in the one-credit courses. During the 2012-13 academic year, graduate students Heiko Eberhardt and Michael Kutscher (men’s soccer), and seniors Roberto Francioni (men’s golf) and Ioana Ivan (women’s tennis) served as mentors, teaching sections of the Personal Development course in time management, conflict management, leadership and commitment.

The volleyball team won its fourth straight Knights Cup and $1,000 to use towards any program enhancements. Student-athletes competed on behalf of their teams and earned points in the following categories that align with the Life Skills Program: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development, and Community Service. The Knights Cup competition encourages the achievement of academic excellence, promotes personalized choices for supplementing the studentathlete’s educational background, provides opportunities for personal development, involves the studentathlete as a role-model/leader, and supports the team concept and encourages student-athletes to support fellow student-athletes. Behind the volleyball team, women’s swimming and women’s golf finished in the top three.

Serving the South Florida area in many different capacities, Lynn’s student-athletes participated in just over 1,700 hours of community service. They strengthened relationships with Habitat for Humanity, Stratford Court Retirement Home, Community Blood Center of South Florida and the American Cancer Society, while continuing to help other established organizations.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee continued collect items for a charity of their choice as part of the Sunshine State Conference donation competition. This year, the student-athletes took a different route and donated their items, consisting of toiletries and clothes, to the local Haitian communities through the Lynn University housekeeping staff. In total, student-athletes sent 4,890 items. SAAC’s four-year total of items collected and donated to charity has now been raised to 20,611. For the student-athletes efforts, LU finished second in the Collection Donation Award sponsored by the Sunshine State Conference.

Lynn completed granting its fifth “wish” through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. The Fighting Knights conducted a variety of fundraisers to raise $2,500; the amount needed to be a partner wishmaker with the foundation. The men’s and women’s golf team led the fundraising efforts earning over $2,000 at their charity golf tournament at Boca Delray Country Club.

Building upon a relationship that started by hosting a single BINGO Night four years ago, SAAC continued to visit Stratford Court Retirement Home on numerous occasions. The Fighting Knights hosted BINGO at least twice a month and organized the 5th Annual “Senior Prom” for the residents. The “Senior Prom” served as the marquee event as over 250 senior citizens attended the “Sweetheart” themed event in late January.

Yearly Athletic Recap With two national championships and a national runner-up in hand, Lynn University took its place among the nation’s best with a 23rd place finish out of 282 NCAA Division II schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings. The prestigious award is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletes and Learfield Sports to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country as points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.

This marks the second consecutive top-25 finish for the Fighting Knights and eighth overall since being eligible in 1997. Last year the Blue & White were ranked No. 25. Overall seven of Lynn’s 13 programs advanced to the NCAA Tournament to help it claim 463.50 points.

Men’s Soccer and women’s golf added to the school’s prestigious history by winning Lynn’s 20th & 21st national championships while also the fourth in each of their own program’s history.

The Blue & White nearly added the trifecta but the men’s golf team fell in the national title match, taking second place for the second time in three years.

Other successes on the year came from women’s basketball, who won their first SSC regular season title and earned their first at-large NCAA bid, women’s swimming placing 26th at the national championship in their inaugural season and men’s & women’s tennis reaching the NCAA Tournament for the 11th and 17th consecutive years.

Not to be overlooked were the strides made by the women’s cross country team, which was reinstated after an 11-year hiatus. Runner Gabriella Wuyke qualified for the NCAA Tournament as an individual and earned All-South Region recognition by finishing 12th overall.

Men’s Soccer Rarely does a team come around with so many expectations to start a season as did the 2012 Men’s Soccer team. The Fighting Knights not only embraced the pressure but were able to go the distance to win the program’s fourth national championship and the illustrious 20th in Lynn University’s history. Returning 10 starters from a squad which finished as the national runner-up the previous season, Lynn began its run to the title with a 9-0 (nine and oh) record while achieving a No. 1 ranking in the nation. A 3-1 victory at Florida Tech midway through the year capped off a 7-1 league record and gave the Blue & White their 10th Sunshine State Conference crown and 29th for the school. The Fighting Knights title hopes diminished a bit heading into the NCAA Tournament following consecutive losses, but a victory over rival Tampa, the first NCAA Tournament win against the Spartans since 1997, put the Blue & White back on the championship path. Another difficult task presented itself against Rollins but Yannick Braeuer scored an equalizer after going down 1-0 (one-nil) early and Heiko Eberhardt put the game away late with a penalty kick goal. The Fighting Knights then packed their bags for Evans, Georgia for the national final four when Jack Winter scored two goals to knock off Wingate in the quarterfinals. Once on the national stage, little could slow down Lynn. Against Mercyhurst, Julian Halder scored 36 seconds into the match and later right before the half to punch LU’s ticket to the national championship.

The Fighting Knights’ offensive firepower was on full display when Johnny Mertl found the back of the net two minutes into play. A Yannick Braeuer goal provided some cushion heading into the break but it was NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player Anthony Desperito’s goal in the second half that proved the game-winner against Saginaw Valley State, giving Lynn its first men’s soccer national title since 2003.

A season for the ages, Matt DiCerbo, Jason Sangha and Jack Winter all garnered All-America accolades, making it 11 consecutive years the Fighting Knights have had at least one All-American and 26 of 27 years in total. The old saying ‘Defense Wins Championships’ rang true for Lynn as it tied for first in the nation in shutouts with 13, finished second in team goals against average at 0.51 and third in shutout percentage at 57 percent.

Not only champions on the field, the Blue & White earned the No. 1 grade-point average in the country for men’s soccer among all NCAA Division 1, 2 and 3 schools. Lynn also became just the third school in NCAA Division II history to garner back-to-back Elite 89 selections after Martin Wehlert was honored prior to the national semifinals. The Elite 89 Award is presented to the student-athlete who reaches the pinnacle of competition at the national championship while also achieving the highest academic standard among his peers.

Baseball It was a rough and tumble 2013 baseball season as the Fighting Knights fell just short in their quest for a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance all the while going in and out of the national top-25 and battling injuries to key players. Lynn’s pitching staff was at the top of its game, boasting three starters among the Sunshine State Conference leaders in earned-run average while the team finished with the fourth-lowest team ERA in school history. The Fighting Knights had three players garner Sunshine State Conference Player or Pitcher of the Week honors and two more, Kentrail Pierce and Jed Vandernaald, went on to be recognized as South Region Pitcher of the Week. Jason Matusik continued the trend of power-hitting first baseman donning the Blue & White. The senior right-hander le the team and ranked among the top-10 of the Sunshine State Conference in batting average, hits, doubles, RBI and slugging & on-base percentage. He was honored as the SSC Player of the Year, giving the Blue & White back-to-back winners of the award for just the fourth time in conference history.

Newcomer Ryan Lashley also made his mark by ranking among the league leaders in home runs and total bases. Lynn won 25 games for the eighth time in nine years and 23 times overall. This season the Fighting Knights even set team program records for runs scored and hits in a game and tallied the most runs at the NCAA Division II level since 2008 after knocking off Rollins 38-4. Lynn also swept Florida Southern in SSC play for just the second time in school history.

Men’s Basketball After graduating their top scorer and defensive player in 2012, the Blue and White welcomed eight newcomers to join forces with key returners such as seniors Jeremy Lampkin and Slobodan Miljanic. An impressive 80-48 season opening victory over Ave Maria, was highlighted by newcomer Shamel Akins leading the team with 16 points. The Fighting Knights would go to begin the season with a 7-3 record including victories over St. Martins and Missouri Western State in our annual Courtyard by Marriot Holiday Classic but finished the season 11-16 overall and 3-13 in the SSC. Among the big victories for the Blue and White was a 71-66 road win at rival Barry University before knocking off 10th ranked Tampa in a 16-point thriller at home. All three seniors played vital roles for the Blue & White as Akins, Jeremy Lampkin and Slobodan Miljanic finished first, second and fourth in scoring; Lamkin was second on the team in rebounds and Miljanic led the squad in three-pointers made. Both two-year players, Miljanic leads Lynn as the program’s leader in free-throw percentage at 83.5 percent, and fifth in three’s made with 123 while Lampkin is fifth in free-throw shooting.

Lynn University

Women’s Basketball Lynn University’s women’s basketball team was out to prove the doubters wrong in the 201213 season and they did just that. Picked to finish seventh in the Sunshine State Conference in the preseason, the Fighting Knights posted an 18-10 overall mark while going 11-5 in SSC play to set a program record for league wins in a season. Adding the cherry on top, Lynn claimed its first SSC regular season title, and the 30th for the school, while earning the first NCAA Tournament At-Large bid and second tournament appearance in program history. In guiding the team to its best league performance, head coach Niki Washington was named the SSC Coach of the Year. Leading the charge for LU on the court was Kira Harvey. The senior guard averaged a league-high 18.9 points per game and became the program’s most decorated player after garnering All-America recognition by three publications, earning South Region Player of the Year honors and becoming the first player in SSC history to be named Player AND Defensive Player of the Year. Harvey also etched her name into the school record books by becoming the program leader in three-pointers made and attempted and three-point percentage in a season and career. Charla Nelson-James made huge gains in her second season donning the Blue & White, improving her shooting markedly to a career-best 47.2 percent while becoming the first player in program history to lead in the conference in blocks in consecutive seasons. The Fighting Knights also said goodbye to three additional seniors, Karolina Bazua, Amanda Schultz and Tashina Bailey. Bazua shot over 30 percent from three-point range in her career, Schultz scored 550 points and pulled down 350 rebounds and Bailey leaves as one of just two players with 500 rebounds and 90 blocked shots in their career at Lynn.

Lynn University

Women’s Cross Country Lynn University revived it’s dormant cross country program after an 11-year absence and version 2.0 was a complete success in 2012. The re-booted squad of seven girls first competed as individuals at the Early Bird Classic but raced their first team competition at Embry-Riddle where they finished 10th out of 12 teams. During the season the Blue & White encountered misty conditions and were also able to hang out with the Disney crew. Gabriella Wuyke put on an impressive performance, becoming the first runner in school history to finish in the top-10 when she placed ninth at EmbryRiddle and earned medalist honors with a sixth-place finish at the Sunshine State Conference Championship. She also became the first runner to garner All-SSC and AllSouth Region recognition and the first to qualify and compete in the NCAA Tournament in program history. Not to be overlooked were the dramatic improvements made by each individual as the average time improvement was a minute 52 seconds in a 5K and over 45 seconds in 6k runs.

Men’s Golf A new era began for the men’s golf program with the hiring of Andrew Danna as the third head coach in school history. Although there was new leadership, the Fighting Knights direction continued on the up and up. Lynn won four tournaments, finished within the top-three in eight of 11 tournaments this year and posted the third-lowest team tournament (291.63) and team stroke averages (74.21). The Blue & White stumbled out of the gates but three consecutive victories at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate, McDonough Cup and Saint Leo Invitational erased any thoughts of a slip-up. Lynn then further cemented itself as a player on the national scene by winning the Bobcat Invitational for the third time in four years. Lynn advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship for the third time in four years and did not disappoint, tying for fourth out of 20 teams to advance to the match-play rounds. Once there, Lynn knocked off South Carolina-Aiken and Western Washington in the quarterfinals and semifinals to set up an all-Sunshine State Conference final against Barry. The Fighting Knights did their best to bring home the title, tying the Buccaneers 2-2-1 in head-to-head but a 399403 aggregate score put the team as the national runners-up. Daniel Young etched his name as one of the top golfers, if not the best, in program history by leading the team in scoring average and top-10 finishes. This year he became the first player in program history to be a three-time All-SSC and three-time All-American. He also set records for stroke average, top-10 finishes and rounds played.

Women’s Soccer The Fighting Knights women’s soccer team had its growing pains in 2012 but with so many underclassmen, the future looks extremely bright. Boasting 17 freshman and sophomores, Lynn University finished its season 5-8-3 overall and 3-41 in the Sunshine State Conference but posted big victories over NCAA Division II Tournament qualifiers Rollins and Barry. Kirstie Schults become one of the top goal scorers in the SSC in her second year with the Blue & White, earning SSC Player of the Week recognition after a three-goal performance against the Tars while being named First Team All-Conference. After some early season struggles adjusting to the college game, Tatiana Penagos tallied three goals over her final four games, finishing second on the team to Schults in goals and points. Additionally, Lauren Handley continued her ascent as one of the conference’s top play-makers by logging a team-best four assists. The Fighting Knights also said goodbye to three four-year seniors in captain Rio Hanlan, Kelsey Butler and Stevie Jones, all of whom were four-time SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll Recipients. Hanlan anchored the defense all four seasons, Butler is the program leader in saves with 229 and Jones provided toughness in the midfield over 44 games played.

Softball The Fighting Knights have revived the softball program in head coach Amy Bellisari’s second season, recording more wins to date than the past two seasons combined. With the addition of six newcomers to a committed returning class of six, the 2013 squad raised the level of play. The Blue and White began the season at the Peach Belt/Sunshine State Crossover with a 2-2 record after defeating UNCPembroke in a walk-off victory and then knocked-off #12 North Georgia 4-3 in come-from-behind fashion. Lynn further highlighted its refurbished team with an early-season, non-conference double-header sweep of rivals Nova Southeastern 4-1 and 7-1, which jumpstarted an 8-1 run for the Blue & White heading into Spring Break. The Fighting Knights won their first conference series of the season at Florida Southern, taking two-out-of-three from the Mocs for the first time since 2010, while other SSC highlights include halting Florida Tech’s 13-game winning streak and shutting down Barry. The Blue and White finished the season 19-31 with junior Kasey Murray earning All-Conference and Daktronics All-Region accolades.

Lynn University

Women’s Swimming Lynn University welcomed its first sport expansion since 1999 with the addition of women’s swimming for the 2012 season. Just as fellow newbies cross country made gains in its first season, the Fighting Knights swimmers showed the rest of the Sunshine State Conference and the nation they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. With only seven swimmers on the squad, Lynn found it difficult to win overall matches but that did not stop it from winning individual events. Thalie Carmigniani claimed victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 200 individual medley and Julia Pedersen and Tyne Potgieter took top honors in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke in the first match Lynn ever competed in. Carmigniani, Pedersen and Potgieter would go on to take several individual events throughout the season while Morgan Glazer, Clairissa Myatt and Rhi Wilson and Darian Weppner all made significant improvements in their times , culminating in personal-best times at the Sunshine State Conference Championship. Once at the SSC Championship, Carmigniani and Potgieter were able to reach the podium, giving Lynn its first ever medal, a bronze in the 400 IM for Carmigniani, and first gold, a victory and SSC record time of 1:03.33 (1-oh-3, 33) for Potgieter in the 100 breast. The duo would go on to medal one more time each and help LU finish sixth out of seven teams. Lynn’s season did not end at conference as Carmigniani and Potgieter each qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship where they led Lynn to a 26th place finish and fourth among the five SSC schools in attendance.

Carmigniani garnered All-America Honorable Mention recognition for her times in the 400 IM and 200 Back and Potgieter in the 100 breast.

Est. 2012 Thalie Carmigniani recorded several firsts for the swimming program; First event victory, first SSC Swimmer of the Week, first SSC Championship medal, first person to win multiple medals at a SSC Championship and first All-American recognition

Darian Weppner became the first student-athlete to letter in multiple sports since Lynn Hall of Famer Michele Newman as she competed for both the volleyball and swimming teams

Swimming is Lynn’s first sport expansion since the addition of rowing in 1999.

The swimming team won’t be the newbies for long as the Fighting Knights will begin competition in men’s lacrosse starting in the Spring of 2014

Tyne Potgieter earned the first SSC Championship gold medal when she took top honors in the 200yard breast stroke while also breaking the SSC Championship record time previously held by Lynn assistant coach Ewa Jamborska

With just six women competing, Lynn’s swimming team finished sixth out of seven teams at the SSC Championship and fourth out of five league schools at the NCAA Division II National Championship

Men’s Tennis Coming off of a tough loss last season in the national semifinals to eventual NCAA Division II Champions Armstrong Atlantic, the Fighting Knights returned key starters in Willi Wolfer, Alessio Iannozzi, Max Kouyate, and Vlad Cirla. In the fall,Willi Wolfer made his second straight ITA Small College South Region Finals appearance for singles. This year Wolfer won the South Region advancing to the ITA Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama. With the addition of Pavel Mojha and Simon Gloeckner proved beneficial as Lynn began the 2013 campaign with nine straight wins with 4 victories over Top-25 teams including #6 Rollins and #12 Saint Leo in Sunshine State Conference play. Lynn was dealt its first loss of the spring by #2 West Florida in a 5-4 loss. The Fighting Knights won the next five matches before running into trouble against #10 Oklahoma Christian, and top seeded defending national champions Armstrong Atlantic. LU’s only loss of the SSC season came in the final conference match against #2 rival, Barry University. The Blue and White made its 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament this season after finishing the regular season with a 15-5 overall record and a 5-1 Sunshine State Conference slate. After finishing as the Sunshine State Conference Runners-Up, the Fighting Knights knocked off #37 West Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A 4-5 loss to #3 West Florida in the Regional Finals would end the men’s season. Coach Perez earned his 900th career win at the helm of both the men’s and women’s programs during the Blue and White’s NCAA Tournament run. Lynn finished the season ranked fourth nationally according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and returns six letter winners from this seasons squad

Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program returned five starters from a squad which reached the national quarterfinals last season and early returns were impressive after Valentine Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan claimed the ITA Small College South Region Championship and advanced to the national tournament in the fall. This trip marked the second straight year Lynn sent a doubles team to the national finals, with Ivan making both appearances.

Owners of the top ranking in the South Region to start 2013, Lynn started the season with consecutive 9-0 victories over St. Thomas and Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd while topping nationally-ranked Rollins in a 6-3 victory. The Fighting Knights were dealt their first loss of the season at #12 Saint Leo but bounced back to win eight straight, including victories over #17 Florida Southern and #10 West Florida. The thirdranked doubles team of Confalonieri and Ivan completed a 13-2 record in the regular season while Confalonieri, who ranks 4th nationally in singles, finished with a 11-2 slate as the number one singles player for the Fighting Knights. Coach Perez earned his 500th career win at the helm of the women’s program this season en route to a 14-3, 5-2 Sunshine State Conference regular season record. Lynn made its 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this season, where they defeated #12 Rollins in the opening round to earn Coach Perez his 900th career win as the head of the men’s and women’s programs. The women’s tennis season came to a halt in the regional final when a 4-5 loss to rivals Barry University sent the Fighting Knights home early. LU finished the season ranked 10th nationally while Valentine Confalonieri was recognized as the ITA National Freshman of the Year. Confalonieri also earned First Team All-Sunshine State Conference honors in singles and doubles along with teammate Ioana Ivan.

Lynn University

Volleyball Displaced from their home court for nearly the entire season due to Lynn University hosting the 2012 presidential debate, the Fighting Knights young volleyball team came together to make tremendous strides from the previous season while, in the process, just missing out on a NCAA Tournament bid. Opening the year with the second-best record in program history at 8-1, LU went on to finish 15-13 overall. The Blue & White tallied impressive victories over Augusta State and Saint Leo while dominating the Gulf South Conference by not dropping a single set in three matches. Brianna Cox surpassed her junior year totals by leading the team with 268 kills, a 311 (three-eleven) hitting percentage and 107 total blocks. Cox also set program match records for total blocks and block assists against Wayne State and logged the second-most solo blocks against Merrimack (Mery-Mack). The senior middle blocker was honored as an All-Sunshine State Conference and Daktronics All-South Region Second Team selection. Fellow senior Abbey Brokop quarterbacked the offense and fell just short of the 1,000 assist mark but she closed out her career with the third most assists with 1,913 and became the second player in program history with 1,000 assists and 500 digs in a career.

Lynn University

Women’s Golf The women’s golf program looked to build upon a season in which they returned to being one of the nation’s best. And the 2012-13 squad did just that by setting a school record for victories in a season, including a win in the NCAA South Regional, and claiming the program’s fourth national title and Lynn’s 21st overall. The Fighting Knights opened the fall on a high note by winning the NCAA D-2 Preview and carried that momentum into the spring by taking top honors at the Kiawah (KEY-uh-wha) Island Intercollegiate, SMSU Spring Invitational and the Bash-at-theBeach Invite. This gave the Blue & White seven victories in two years under head coach Danny Randolph, who also claimed his 50th career tournament win. Lynn didn’t stop there, winning the program’s first NCAA South Regional before taking top honors at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Championship by threestrokes over four-time defending champions and top-ranked Nova Southeastern.

On the year, Lynn won all four tournaments it competed in at the LPGA International Legends Course. Additionally, Lynn set a 54-hole school record with an 898 total at the Lady Moc Classic. Comprised of nearly an identical team from a year ago, the Blue & White’s 31 top-10 finishes set a school record. The team also broke the lowest scoring average by a stroke (76.97) and had three golfers finish the year within the top-four lowest single-season scoring averages. Individually, Samantha Smolen tied a 16-year program record by shooting a 142 at Kiawah in winning her second career tournament while Jessica Bradley recorded the best finish in school history at the SSC Championship after tying for second. To top off the individual accolades, all five starters were named All-Americans and Scholar All-Americans.
