SEASON OUTLOOK With four returning starters and a talented mixture of newcomers, the 2010-11 edition of the Lynn University men’s basketball program will feature one of its deepest rosters in recent years. Returning to the squad is leading scorer Chris Hall and leading rebounder Michel Vidal, who both should benefit from the variety of ways they can be used with increased depth this season.
Jovan Robinson, junior Pascal Schuler as well as JUCO transfers Josh Garcia and Jimmy Gaskins.
“With so many new players and interchangeable parts, this team has a very high ceiling,” said head coach Scott McMillin. “We have so many options that give us the ability to go both big or small on both sides of the ball which makes it very exciting for us as coaches.”
After transferring from Division I Canisius College in Buffalo, Robinson adjusted well to the rigors of South Florida, finishing second on the squad with 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. He also proved to be one the team’s most versatile players last season, leading the Knights with 3.6 assists a game.
Hall became the program’s leading scorer as a junior and earned All-America recognition while averaging just under 20 points a game, good enough to rank third in the Sunshine State Conference and receive First-Team All-SSC honors. The South Florida product became the first Fighting Knight to be named a preseason AllAmerican, garnering honors from the Division II Bulletin. “Chris has done so many things in his three years at Lynn and it is very important for him to take a major leadership role in his final season,” McMillin said. “Really, his final step is to be a leader in all aspects; vocally, emotionally, defensively and offensively.” Joining Hall in the backcourt are a bevy of versatile players who can play multiple positions, including returning starters Rodney Kennedy and
4
Kennedy averaged 9.7 points and dished out three assists a game in his first season with the Fighting Knights. The native of Dothan, Ala. also led the squad by shooting 42 percent behind the arc from the point guard position.
“Jovan had a really good junior season and definitely got better as the season went on,” said McMillin. “He has a very high basketball IQ and we need him to take another step as a veteran this year.” Schuler played in all 28 games last season as a key reserve averaging nearly 11 minutes a game. The coaching staff will look to him once again for valuable minutes as he brings an extra toughness to the game and does all of the little things to help a team win. Garcia comes to Boca Raton after spending the last two seasons at Pasco-Hernando CC in New Port Richey, Fla., where he was an all-conference selection as a sophomore. This past season, Garcia was lights out shooting the ball, ranking seventh in all Florida junior colleges with
16.6 points a game while shooting nearly 40% from three-point land. “Rodney played primarily at the point guard position last year, but I expect to be able to move him to the two and play him and Josh together,” said McMillin. “This will give us the ability to play faster with two very good ball handlers on the court at the same time.” “Both players can really stroke the ball, with Rodney being a proven scorer at this level and Josh coming in as the seventh-leading scorer in Florida last season,” added McMillin. “They both are very good off the dribble and will do a tremendous job leading this team.” Another all-conference performer as a junior college player, Gaskins could see time at four positions in his first season with the Fighting Knights. The six-foot-four wing from Waycross, Ga., averaged double-figures his first two seasons at Florida State College-Jacksonville, including 15 a game as a sophomore. “Jimmy is a very talented, strong and competitive player who will bring a new element to our team,” said McMillin. “He is a very versatile player who can attack the rim, shoot or even post his man on the offensive side, but he also is a great rebounder for a guard and has the ability to be a tremendous defender.” Also adding depth to the backcourt will be junior Michael Woo and freshman Colin Gates. Woo is a fourth-year player who has seen time as a reserve with the Blue & White while Gates was an
SEASON OUTLOOK All-State selection as a senior at nearby Grandview Prep.
Terrell Williams and Chris Watson, in addition to true freshman Craig Brown.
who knows how to play the way we want to play.”
“Mike is a fourth-year guard that really leads by example and we will need his energy and enthusiasm every day,” said McMillin. “Colin is a local guy who is very coachable and possesses a great work ethic which will be a tremendous asset for us.”
A native of Paterson, N.J., Williams played three seasons at La Salle University in Philadelphia where he proved to be an extremely athletic player who could excel defensively and on the glass. Williams averaged three points and three rebounds in his three seasons with the Explorers but saw flashes of greatness by recording a double-double against Charlotte as a sophomore.
Lynn played the sixth-toughest schedule in the country last season and it will not get any easier as it faces a pair of NCAA Tournament teams before heading into SSC play. The Fighting Knights will tipoff the season at the PBA Tip-Off Classic in West Palm Beach when they take on Northern Michigan on November 13. After a trip to St. Thomas (Fla.), LU will host Puerto-RicoMayaguez in its home opener on November 24 and North Georgia on November 29.
Leading the frontcourt for the Knights will be Vidal, the 2009-10 SSC Defensive Player of the Year, but beyond that the frontline is unproven which means several players will have to step up to fill the void. Vidal led the conference with a LU record 11.5 rebounds a game and finished second in the league with 2.2 blocks per contest. The six-foot-eight big man also averaged over eight points while shooting 53 percent from the floor. “Mike was not heavily recruited out of high school but his work ethic and tenacity has made him one of the elite players in the conference, if not the country, said McMillin. “He is really a self-made player and that is all a testament to him.” Bo Jukic also returns to the Fighting Knights after starting 13 and appearing in all 28 games as a sophomore while averaging four points and four boards a game. A third year player for the Blue & White, Jukic will need to really step up his game as the staff is placing high expectations on him as a veteran of the system. Among the newcomers who should fill out the frontcourt for the Knights are Division I transfers
Watson will not have to travel far as he played his first season at nearby Florida Atlantic University. As a true freshman in 2008-09, Watson made 19 starts while appearing in all 32 games for the Owls, averaging four points and four rebounds. He electrified the crowds with his dunks and ability to finish around the rim. “Chris is arguably the best athlete in the conference and maybe the whole country at this level,” said McMillin. “He is a physical specimen who has a tremendous upside and needs to learn to use those abilities to his advantage.” Brown had a tremendous senior season to close out his high school career, averaging 21 points at North Miami Beach High School. The local product also averaged 18 points for his club team which was the Florida USSA Runner-Up and was named the team’s most valuable player. “Craig had the best preseason of anyone on the team,” said McMillin. “His work ethic and maturity for a true freshman is through the roof and he has the opportunity to be a big contributor this season. He is a very strong, physical player
The month of December will be a challenging one for the Fighting Knights as they open the month against a pair of NCAA Tournament opponents. Lynn will take on Valdosta State, who advanced to the Elite Eight last season, and Alabama-Huntsville, on back-to-back days in the Valdosta State Classic. Palm Beach Atlantic makes the short trek to Boca on December 8, before conference rival Eckerd comes to the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center on December 11, for the SSC opener. Lynn will host its annual Courtyard by Marriott Invitational to close out 2010 as Barry, Indianapolis and West Florida come to town on December 18-19. The Fighting Knights will open the New Year at conference foe Saint Leo before a short trip to PBA marks the end of the non-conference schedule for the Blue & White.

Franklin Pierce, coinciding with the program’s 300th all-time victory. The Knights won 16 games in 2007-08, including three against nationally-ranked opponents. McMillin's squad defeated Florida Tech and Rollins College, ranked No. 11 and No. 4 respectively, on the road in back-to-back games before claiming a season sweep on the 21st ranked Tars at home. Consistently a strong rebounding team, the Knights led the SSC in offensive rebounds per game with 13.76 and ranked second in rebounding offense (37.6), rebounding defense (32.1) and rebounding margin (+5.5) Lynn also set a school record with 58 boards in the season opening victory against St. Thomas (Fla.).
Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Lynn University men's basketball program, head coach Scott McMillin has made the program synonymous with success at the Division II level. McMillin continued the Fighting Knights ascent to national prominence in just his second season by guiding the 2004-05 team to the program's second national semifinal appearance before falling to eventual national champion Virginia Union. His hard work and dedication is a testament to the team’s success.
McMillin's players also made a lasting impression on the Lynn record books in the 2007-08 season. Under McMillin's tutelage, senior Hans Schur developed from a walk-on to becoming just the fourth LU player to amass 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds with the Blue and White. Also, freshman Chris Hall broke the 14year-standing school record for points scored in a game by dropping 42 in a 106-104 double overtime victory over Florida Tech in the SSC tournament. Hall reset his own record a year later with 43 points against Nova Southeastern in the 2009 SSC tournament.
McMillin’s presence can be seen throughout the Lynn campus from the playing courts to the classrooms. Since taking over the program in the 2003-04 season, Fighting Knights basketball players have seen great individual success on and off the court as McMillin has coached eight All-Sunshine State Conference players, a Division II All-American and a pair of Academic All-District selections. More impressively, 12 of McMillin’s student-athletes have gone on to play basketball professionally.
The 2006-07 team posted 14 wins and continued the Lynn tradition of never having had a losing season. As a team, the Knights showed their usual tenacity on the boards and ability to put up numbers on the offensive side of the ball. McMillin's squad ranked 11th in NCAA D-II play with a 6.8 rebounding margin while the Blue and White tied a then-school record by grabbing 57 rebounds in a game against Puerto Rico-Cayey.
In his seven years at the helm of the Blue & White, McMillin has won 127 games with nearly half of them in conference play. Overall, in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach, McMillin has amassed 163 career victories, winning over 61 percent of his games and averaging just over 18 wins a season.
Lynn's 115 point outburst against Wilmington (Del.) College was just the second time a McMillin Knights team had eclipsed the century mark and was the fifth-most points scored in LU history. Always dangerous with the ball in their hands, the Knights also tied a school record with 13 three-pointers made against rival Barry University.
This past season, McMillin led the Knights to its first winning record in conference play in four years despite playing the sixthtoughest schedule in the nation. The campaign also came with several individual milestones as Chris Hall became the program’s all-time leading scorer in just his junior season and was the program’s first repeat Division II All-American. Hall’s classmate, Michel Vidal, became the first player in LU history to win the SSC Defensive Player of the Year after averaging a program-record 11.5 rebounds per game.
In just his third year with the Fighting Knights in 2005-06, McMillin posted the first back-to-back 20-win seasons at Lynn since the 1997-99 campaigns. He also became the school's all-time leader in league play, boasting a 33-13 Sunshine State Conference record and an impressive .717 winning percentage. The Blue and White went 20-9, including an 11-5 SSC record, the first time Lynn had earned consecutive conference double-figure win totals since 1997-99.
During the 2008-09 season, McMillin's squad boasted the Sunshine State Conference's top scorer, Chris Hall, and top rebounder, Michel Vidal. No SSC school has claimed both statistical leaders in the same season since 1997-98. Hall was just the third Knight to garner All-America honors while Vidal became the only LU player to eclipse 10 rebounds per game in program history. McMillin also earned his 100th victory at Lynn with a win over
McMillin's 2005-06 squad led the SSC in 10 statistical categories, including scoring offense (75.7 point per game) and scoring margin (+10.9). Not only did his team excel at scoring production, but the Knights also dominated in efficiency. The Blue and White led the conference in free throw (.736) and three-point (.408) percentages, eighth-best in NCAA Division II play, while ranking second in field goals (.463). McMillin's Knights distributed the ball as well as they shot it, topping the SSC in assists per game with 18.2, good
7
enough to rank 12th nationally. Nobody can accuse McMillin's program from being a one-trickpony either, as his teams also do extremely well on the defensive end. The 2005-06 Knights dominated the SSC in rebounding, pulling down 40 boards a game and outrebounding their opponents by a margin of 9.2 a game, fourth-most in the nation. Lynn also saw the fruits of McMillin's high-pressure defensive schemes, leading the SSC in steals per game at 9.59 a clip to rank 28th in D-II. Among the youngest coaches in the NCAA Division II men's game at the time, McMillin became the program's first coach to win Sunshine State Conference and South Region Coach of the Year honors. The 2004-05 season saw the Fighting Knights post a record of 29-6 overall, the most wins in program history, and win their first SSC regular season and tournament titles. Under McMillin's guidance, Justin Wingard, James Taylor and James Cage earned All-SSC honors while Wingard and Cage earned All-South Region recognition. He also coached the program's first graduating four-year seniors: Taylor, Wingard, Austin Faber and Akil Lewis. All four players etched their names into the record books as Taylor became the program's all-time leading scorer, Wingard became the program's all-time leading rebounder, Faber the all-time leader for assists and Lewis the all-time leader in three-pointers made. In 2003-04, McMillin led the Knights to 17 regular season wins, the most since the 2000-01 season, with LU winning nine times in league play for the second most in the school's six-season SSC history. The Fighting Knights secured season sweeps over four league teams (Eckerd, Florida Tech, Saint Leo and Tampa) while finishing third in the final SSC standings, the best league showing since 1999-2000. Doing whatever it took to inject discipline, toughness and tenacity through the veins of his program, McMillin stressed defense to his team throughout the year and it seemed to listen, holding 13 opponents to 60 points or less and six to 50 points or less. The Lynn defense was at its finest the night of Dec. 18 as it held East Central (Okla.) to just 30 points, establishing a new school record in the process. The Blue and White finished the 2003-04 regular season ranked third in the SSC in points allowed, led the league in 3-point pct. defense and tied for first in field goal pct. defense while ranking in the top-10 nationally in both scoring defense and field goal pct. defense. McMillins focus on the defensive end of the floor did little to detract from Lynn's offensive efficiency and potency as the Knights finished the regular season ranked third in the league in scoring offense and was the only SSC program with three players in the top10 in scoring. In fact, LU was the only team to finish the regular season ranked amongst the SSC's top three in both scoring offense and defense. Lynn's third head coach in program history, McMillin arrived in Boca Raton after two seasons at Santa Fe (Fla.) Community

College. He led the Saints to a two-year mark of 36-25 including a 25-6 showing in 2002-03. Santa Fe finished that season ranked No. 19 nationally with McMillin earning Mid-Florida Conference Coach of the Year accolades in the process. In addition to the oncourt success, McMillin pushed his team academically as well, resulting in a program-high 3.05 grade point average achieved by SFCC players in the fall of 2002. Prior to his stint in Gainesville, the hard-working McMillin moved to the Sunshine State in the fall of 2000, serving as an assistant coach at Central Florida Community College under the direction of the legendary Gene Smithson. He began his coaching career where he finished his playing days, spending two seasons on the bench at the University at Buffalo as an assistant to former Bulls mentor Tim Cohane. A two-year letterwinner at UB and a FirstTeam All-Mid-Continent Conference All-Academic selection in 1998, McMillin picked up a bachelor's degree in business administration from Buffalo in 1998 and a Master's of Business Administration from the school currently a member of the Mid-American Conference in 2000. A 1994 graduate of Bishop Carroll High School in his hometown of Wichita, Kan. McMillin played two seasons at Butler (Kan.) CC before joining the Buffalo program. At Butler CC, McMillin was part of a Grizzly program which posted a 55-16 (.775) two-year record, including a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Final Four in 1996. He started to demonstrate leadership skills early, serving as a team captain at both Butler CC and Buffalo. Born Scott Michael McMillin on Oct. 4, 1976 in Wichita, he currently resides in Boynton Beach with his wife Crystal. Away from coaching, McMillin enjoys spending time with his wife, playing golf and watching college football and basketball.
James Altman joins the Lynn University men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach for the 2010-11 season. Altman, a former assistant to McMillin at Santa Fe Community College, brings seven years of Division I experience to the Fighting Knights program.
Jason Averkamp is in his first season as a graduate assistant coach for men’s basketball at Lynn University. Averkamp came to Boca Raton after recently completing a four-year career at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
“Simply put, James is as good as it gets,” McMillin said. “He’s an unbelievable worker, extremely self-motivated and truly cares about the success of student-athletes both on and off the floor. James is a tremendous coach and I respect and trust him immensely.”
“We are very excited to have Jason as a vital member of our program,” said Fighting Knights head coach Scott McMillin at Averkamp's hiring. "He comes from a quality basketball program in Wisconsin-Milwaukee and he was a self-made player during his career there. That “blue collar” work ethic is what our program is about, and we are excited to have him here."
Altman has spent the last seven years on staff with Travis Ford, most recently a two year stretch as video coordinator at Oklahoma State University. With the Cowboys, he was responsible for game scout preparation as well as assisting in recruiting, scheduling and co-directing the Travis Ford Basketball School and coaching clinic. Prior to his time at OSU, Altman spent three years at the University of Massachusetts as the Director of Basketball Operations. With the Minutemen he was in charge of scheduling and planning official and unofficial visits as well as arranging and coordinating team travel and off campus practices. He also worked with the administration and coaches for facility scheduling and assisting with preand postseason strength and conditioning along with assisting the coaching staff with scouting reports and video editing.
Averkamp appeared in 90 games in four seasons with the Panthers, averaging 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. He appeared in all 34 games as a senior, averaging a career-high 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds in a reserve role. A native of New Berlin, Wis., Averkamp was an all-area and firstteam all-conference performer as a senior at New Berlin West High School.
Joining the Eastern Kentucky University staff in 2003, Altman was responsible for recruiting, scouting and coordinating film exchange. He was also responsible for organizing and updating the recruiting database as well as daily recruiting mailouts. Prior to his time at EKU, Altman spent a year at Santa Fe CC under the direction of McMillin. The team posted a 25-6 overall record and won the Mid-Florida Conference Championship. The team ended the season ranked 19th in the NJCAA and No. 2 in the Florida Community College Athletic Association. A native of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Altman earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Hartwick College in 2002. He was a cocaptain and all-conference selection for the Hawks during his collegiate career, ending his tenure as a four-year starter and ranking third all-time in three pointers made and eighth in assists.

The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters. Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Thirty former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with the possibility of a new stadium in the near future. Boasting a combined seven national championships and 12 Sunshine State Conference titles, Lynn University's men's and women's tennis programs will usher in a new era beginning in 2009 with the Perper Tennis Complex. The state-of-the-art million-dollar complex contains a total of six courts, covered chair-back stadium seating, an electronic scoreboard and is the first outdoor lighted facility on the Lynn campus. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.

Sunshine State Conference Founded in March of 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to become the NCAA Division II “Conference of Champions.” Started as a basketball conference, The SSC has since grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. A weekly check of national rankings in nearly any Division II sport proves the point, as SSC member institutions consistently find themselves ranked amongst the nation’s elite. Now with nine full members, the SSC is the proud owner of some 74 NCAA Division II National Championships in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Orlando-based league recently added to its already full trophy case with Nova Southeastern University’s first women’s golf title and Lynn University claiming its first baseball national championship. The SSC currently crowns regular-season champions in volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The league also administers season-ending tournaments in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s rowing.
