TIME LINE OUR TIME LINE SINCE 1985 1985
ACME Studios was founded by Adrian Olabuenaga and his wife Lesley Bailey.
The first project was a Limited Edition jewelry collection named “Melrose Emblematic”, consisting of twelve brooches designed by California artist and Memphis Designer, Peter Shire. 1986
With the help of Designer/Architect Ettore Sottsass and writer Barbara Radice, ACME organized “Memphis Designers for ACME”, a collection of over 100 designs by Andrea Branzi, Aldo Cibic, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanini, and others. Mr. Sottsass suggests that designs by Adrian must also be included. ACME is the first American company that Ettore Sottsass ever designed for. The collection debuted at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in 1986, alongside the MEMPHIS MILANO touring show. ACME was the first and only company to work with all 14 Memphis designers. Many pieces from this collection can be found in the permanent collections of museums around the world, including The Houston Museum of Fine Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Frankfurt Museum of Decorative Arts and the entire series holds a place in the permanent collection of The Groninger Museum in The Netherlands. This collection would dramatically change the jewelry industry the same way the Memphis Group’s furniture changed the design world. The “Atomic” necklace from this collection wins the
6
Award in Germany.
TIME LINE 1986 continued
“Architects for ACME” jewelry collection is released, including designs by Richard Meier, Alessandro Mendini, Alberto Olabuenaga, Cesar Pelli, Aldo Rossi, Laurinda Spear, Robert AM Stern and Stanley Tigerman. “Alchimia for ACME” was organized with the collaboration of Milanese Architect Alessandro Mendini. “Artists for ACME” was formed with the assistance of noted California artist Billy Al Bengston. Represented in this collection are Mr. Bengston, Chuck Arnoldi, Kenneth Price, Laddie John Dill and Ronnie Cutrone. 1987

In 1991, Ettore Sottsass and other designers formed a company named Giotto, with the purpose of manufacturing Italian design in Asia. The products never made it past the prototype and sampling stage and were never released. When the company folded in 1996, ACME bought the company’s stock. Many of these objects are now in the permanent collections of several museums (Pompidou Centre, Paris, Denver Art Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art) and coveted by collectors. 1997 The first collection of WRITING TOOLS is released and included designs by Frank Lloyd Wright, Piet Mondrian, Michael Graves, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and others.
A long relationship with Michael Graves begins. ACME was the first company to specialize in producing pens printed with designs by world-class designers, architects, artists and works from museums, starting a revolution in the pen industry, resulting in endless new possibilities for designs in this area. This focus into writing and related accessories fundamentally changed the company and made it into an international brand and quickly acquires distribution in 46 countries. 9

“My very dear friend, the late Ettore Sottsass, introduced me to ACME Studios many years ago, and I’ve happily been developing products and patterns with them for 25 years. Working with ACME Studios is a sheer joy. I’ve designed pens, clocks, jewelry, ties, along with patters and other small items, over these years. The products are always impeccably made. Now they are celebrating their 25th Anniversary. And I want to say congratulations, to Adrian and Lesley, for many years of warm friendship, Maui weather reports, and of course, great design. I’ve always been pleased to be in partnership with ACME Studio.”

FRIDA KAHLO DE RIVERA, (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter who is best known for her self-portraits. Kahlo’s life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterized as naïve art or folk art. Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems, many caused by a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people, and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another.

When approaching this project I asked myself: “How could I possibly transform a boring black pen into something precious and desirable?” The idea was to simply dip the pen into liquid gold. But by doing so, one has to hold the pen on one end, which is why the gold doesn’t cover its entire surface. The final design, rather than being another golden status symbol, literally represents the action of transformation, if not to say the alchemy.

The “HATCH” pen was designed to take advantage of the innate properties of brass, and its remarkable ability to self sterilize. Within a few hours of contact with brass ions, any bacteria or microorganism dies. While this effect is not new and the concept is centuries old, we don’t currently utilize the material’s enormous potential. This antiseptic quality lends itself perfectly to situations where hygiene is a priority, including the medical profession. To further highlight the unique qualities and benefits of using this type of tool, the etched graphics relay some of the story or the reasoning behind it. The hatched pattern is an abstraction of cell structure. The gradient of hatch variation can be symbolic of growth or infection, but overall it demonstrates organic change. In addition to its scientific appearance, the hatch pattern and random layout are also representative of a patchwork quilt. In this way, the graphic demonstrates the function of the brass material by stopping infection at a cellular level, while it also appears comforting and safe like a sewn heirloom blanket.

JIMI HENDRIX, (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970) Widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Hendrix’s revolutionary style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new music form - that embraced the influences of blues, rock, R&B, and jazz - that continue to make Hendrix one of the most popular figures in the history of rock music. Hendrix was an unparalleled showman, rife with passion and an unquenchable thirst for discovering new and innovative sounds. His style was fresh, distinctive, vibrant and always on the cutting edge of ‘60s culture. Hendrix’s music is remembered as the anthem of a generation and continues to influence modern music today. 88

12 PC. PEN DISPLAY
12 PIECE PEN DISPLAY PROGRAM The acrylic display was developed specifically for our standard printed pens only.
“ACRYLIC (12 PC) DISPLAY” ACRYLIC DISP02
The special packaging of Buzz Aldrin and Endless Summer etc., are strong selling points and would be wasted if the pens are put into the acrylic display and the packaging not shown. “Collezione Materiali” is a higher priced pen collection, and it would not make sense to put into the acrylic display. The acrylic display is also not designed for those unusual shapes. Requirements for orders to get an acrylic display at no charge: The order must be 12 different styles. We suggest 2 per style. Changes or adjustments of quantities per style are ok, as long as the total order is at least 24 pens.
