6.7.18 Willkommen I feel like I walk with a constant smile on my face. The architecture is incredible—ornate detailing intertwining with nature, making the supposedly stale and nonliving an organic form that grows from dirt, just as any other plant would do. I want to add that juxtaposition into my work. This is the first time I’ve looked out at the streets and understood none of the signage so it’s quite a shock. I wish I learned a bit more German before I came, but many people here are very kind and open-minded, greeting us with open arms. It’s also nice that a lot of people here can speak English so its not too difficult for us to find our way around. But I try to use as many phrases as I can. Danke!

6.8.18 Memorial Blues 3.5 hour tour! Loved getting scammed by Micky Mouse out of five euros for a pic but hey, you live and learn. Contrasting from that, the most memorable part of the tour was definitely the memorial for the 6 million Jewish. It was explained to us that every block is slightly angled differently and the cobblestones are uneven. It was a surreal experience going through the exhibit. I thought that looking at it from afar was also interesting because you could see the shadows that the blocks casted on each other. I felt like it represented the light versus dark concept often found in the streets of Berlin and All The Light We Cannot See.

6.9.18 Pasta and Pim The Kollwitz Market was at least three times as big as any farmer’s market I’ve been to in Louisville. On top of the fresh food I expected to be there, they had local artists selling shirts, prints, mugs and more. I noticed walking around that the locals were the ones going for the food and the tourists were the ones attracted to the keepsakes. As a last minute decision, Lindsey, Maddie, Cheyene, Elijah, Matt and I decided to gather ingredients at the Market to do a family pasta night. It was fun trying to figure it all out in the fifteen minutes before class was going to start. After dinner, we planned an Uno night outside. We made our first friend, Pim! He is from Amsterdam taking a solo holiday for ten days. Although the girls and I were extremely cautious of him, he grew on us and he ended up being a great friend. We all went out to a super edgy club that Pim was scared we wouldn’t get into so we divided up into pairs to go in. The place had at least five playground forts in the back on the riverfront, so it was one of the most interesting places I’ve ever been to. I felt like a Berliner the entire time and on our way back at 5am as well!

However, for my differences I wanted to play with legibility because I feel like people often have a different idea of my character as a first impression compared to when they get to know me. Feathering the adjectives to play with the legibility was my solution.

6.11.18 Fan Favorite After class, Maddie and I went to go buy a fan to save ourselves from the AC-less sauna that we live in. On our way back, a random guy started talking to us at the train station. He told me I was beautiful and asked if we could go have dinner. Obviously I ignored it. When he asked for my name though, I thought it’d be fun to tell him that I was “Casey”. When we got up for the train, he kept saying “Ciao Casey” to me—a total of twenty times. No matter what, Berlin continues to keep me entertained. We went on an evening walk to the water tower park. Berlin has ping-pong tables and trampolines embedded in the ground at their parks. An innovation America needs to adopt.

Type and Poster We’re making posters for the 48h Neukölln art show. I’m going to be in an international art show in Berlin! Since we’re presenting our posters as a group, our unifying theme is “Genuine Kentucky”. My poster is going to use a compare and contrast route between Berlin and Louisville. I started just jotting down some adjectives that described Berlin versus Louisville to me. It’s interesting because I know these are my adjectives and no one else would have the same exact group of words describing either place. I’m hoping that this will add a bit more “me” into my poster and it’ll showcase my own perspective on the two places. I’ve been seeing a lot of collage type posters and graffiti around Berlin, and I think it would be interesting to use that as my inspiration for this project.

Visualizing Berlin The first project ended with a refined sketch. It feels wrong but we’re moving on. Next, we’re working on a neighborhood map and I am extremely excited because I want to work on a photo montage of the places we’ve been to in our area. I remember doing a physical version in high school, so I think this digital version will turn out well too. I have high hopes.

I’ve always wanted to take a stab at a more surrealistic design. They’re definitely one of my favorite styles and I think this project is going to be perfect for it since it’s going to be a poster about my perspective and how I see the two cities. I’m seeing a surreal Berlin because my experience here so far has been surreal and I almost feel like I could wake up and be back at home dreaming about all of this. In contrast, I see Louisville as home. It’s my backyard that I know like the back of my hand. Combining my perspectives on each will make a fun juxtaposition and hopefully will be up to par for the Neukölln show!

6.15.18 Artistically Educated Free weekend day one! Lindsey, Elijah and I ended up spending eight hours divided between six museums. We went to Alte Nationalgalerie, Altes Museum, Deutsche Kinemathek, Neues Museum, and the Berlinische Galerie. The Altes Museum was one of my favorites because of the paintings. Painting is an artistic talent I wish I had, but it doesn’t seem to be in my blood. One thing I noticed with the museums is that the artwork is obviously beautiful, but the displays such as the frames and architecture are always equally beautiful. You can’t display gold on a paper plate. My other favorite was the Deutsche Kinemathek because it was more of an experiential imersion combined with a top quality museum. The broken up 360 degree mirrors literally reflected the way the film industry was growing all around society back in the day. Later, the three of us made our way back to the Motto Zine store. If the books were not all expensive, I’d be in trouble buying up the entire store.

6.16.18 Cottbus Where? Free weekend day two! Our journey to Tropical Island was supposed to be 45 minutes. We more than quadrupled it at 4 hours. Painfully, we learned the hardships of riding a German train and not understanding the German announcements. We ended up taking a trip to Cottbus and then from there go back to Tropical Island. Patience is a virtue we were forced to gain today. Once we got there, it was magical and every hardship before was worth it. There weren’t very many people there so we didn’t wait in line for more than ten minutes for any and all of the rides. I’m never been more dehydrated in my life, but if I am going to be dehydrated, it might as well be in the most magical place in Germany.

6.17.18 Rembrandt, My Husband Free weekend day 3! Museums day 2! The water park beat me up—I found bruises all over. I was more exhausted than I expected. The Deutsches Technikmuseum was interesting, but far too big for us to fully appreciate in a couple hours. I’ve never seen so many trains, airplanes, and boats in one room. On top of that, their photography, printmaking, and chemistry exhibits were my favorites. By museum number two, we were all ready to call it a day. The Gemäldegalerie had Rembrandt paintings, which I was the most excited for. He is by far one of my favorite artists, so I was excited to see his work in person for the first time. Later, we went to Brandenburg Gate to watch the first German match of the World Cup. I’ve never experienced a more intense game viewing session. Being the champions from the last World Cup, the whole crowd was extremely upset to see the team lose. But I’m invested now so I’ll be ready with my gear and I’m hoping for a comeback!

6.18.18 Giant Rabbits Back on the grind. Worked all day with a döner break for lunch and a Vietnamese break for dinner. Elijah and I went with Cheyene to a bar afterwards because she needed to take some pictures for the Zine class. Simple day, not too much happened. It was probably as close to a normal ~Berliner~ lifestyle as we’re going to get during the trip.

Type and Poster Went into class thinking I was essentially done with my poster. Came out of class with ten times more work. The consensus for the critique was that I need to find a place in between the simple version and the overloaded version. Some people mentioned a consistency problem. I took that into mind and created my vector version of Alexanderplatz TV Tower and Berliner Dom. Playing with color to finish it off. I think the poster is coming along. I’m wondering if I should add currywurst and KFC signs as detail. Hopefully I’ll get some feedback that’ll take me into a refinement stage tomorrow.

Visualizing Berlin Too stressed about the Neukölln poster to do much with the neighborhood poster. I learned some InDesign object styles tips and tricks so that’s helping a lot with my final map. With that, I emphasized my images to make a clear connection with the numberings on my map.

6.20.18 Graffiti Gallery We got to visit the Berlin Biennale. One thing I got out of it is that contemporary art is HARD. It inspired me to take a contemporary art class before graduation because the art form is so complex and difficult to understand that I feel like I need it. It’s something I want to be able to interpret and understand better too. Some things are more straightforward so thtat I can read the description panel and it be enough but some others are just too abstract for it to suffice. We passed this building today which was kept as is since WWII. It is crazy and hard to think that the essentially the whole city, especially the East, was covered in buildings like this. I just love how they kept this one building the way it is while refurbishing every other building around it. It felt like a little piece of history was preserved and left untouched.

6.21.18 Call Me Chancellor It was an uneventful day until nighttime when we went to the Reichstag. I’ve never even been into the White House, so being able to go into the Reichstag was an honest and new experience. I thought the juxtaposition between the original and old looking outside structure versus the sleek and modern design of the inside was a very Berlin characteristic. I loved how they preserved parts of the graffiti walls inside the building. My favorite story our tour guide told us was that an American soldier wrote on the walls of the building during the war and when he came back to visit, he found his signature still on the wall. To top it off, seeing the sunset from the roof was incredible. I loved the way the Berlin flag was flowing in front of the sunset. The picture I was able to get was probably one of my favorites from the entire trip so far.

Type and Poster Added some images and design elements for the Berlin journal and got some sketches done for my TypeWalk poster. Felt extremely productive. I’m excited to create a whole compilation book for my experience here in Berlin. I’m very satisfied with everything I’ve done so far. For the TypeWalk poster, I want to make it crazy and postmodernist while making it legible for an audience looking at my poster as an advertisement for the tour. It may be an ambitious idea but I’m excited to play around with it.

Visualizing Berlin Finished up my neighborhood map*, minus one description. I was struggling with what I would put on the back pages for the fold outs, but I think it would be a good idea to add in my population/ history map data visualizations on those pages. I’m most likely going to keep those pages pretty straightforward so hopefully it fits within the few pages I have alotted. *Check out the map in the back pocket!

6.22.18 Country Bumpkin Living Setting up for Neukölln was not as exciting as expected. Our “exhibition” was a series of six foot tall connected glass panels. Although I was grateful that we were even in the art show, the space we were given inside a mediocre mall was not the most art-show-esque. After we quickly set up and returned to the hostel, it was time for us to leave for Spreewald. I was extremely excited to experience the German countryside and kayak tomorrow. But once we got there, the hostel was worse than expected. It was an experience to say the least. The hostel was in the middle of nowhere with no wifi or reception, our room key was bent, and we only had communal bathrooms and showers. I thought I got away with communal showers freshman year of college, but it came back to me. Although I’m concerned about the living situation, I’m still excited for kayaking because I’ve never been and I hear good things.

6.24.18 Art Show Famous After yesterday, we were all exhausted and ready to go back to Berlin. I never realized how luxury the Meininger was. Doreen was nice enough to let us rest for a couple hours before having to go to Neukölln. Once we got there, I was upset to find out that our table where we sit and offer everyone our sweet tea was nowhere near our exhibition. Rather than being artists in the show presenting our work, we ended up becoming the information booth for the show. We met a couple kind people that came up to the table to talk to us, but it was just unfortunate that it wasn’t up to what I was anticipating for the art show. After Lindsey, Maddie, Elijah and my shift working at the table, we decided to go visit Becky’s exhibition. Again, it was a disappointment because we later found out that she had to take her exhibit down early because they had scheduled a concert at her location. Once we got back, all the exhaustion from the weekend hit and it was time for an early night’s sleep.

6.27.18 Loud Posters, Loud Music Just like the TypeWalk, I completely geeked out during the 100 Best Poster Show excursion at the Kulturforum. There were so many posters that were up my alley—loud. Some were loud in terms of composition, and others were loud in terms of color. I took so many of pictures of the ones that immediately caught my eye during the show. To top it off, I even bought a book for the show so I could read up on the purpose of each poster and have a mini physical copy with me at all times. This was definitely one of my favorite excursions so far. Later, we went to the Gropius Bau museum and I chose to go through the Philippe Parreno exhibit. Being a musician, this was definitely a great choice because he played with sound and light. Within the exhibition, my favorite was the automated grand piano playing music. To end the day, we went to the Komische Oper to watch Carmen, which was amazing. I recognized some of the songs they were singing so I felt like a real opera connoisseur!

6.29.18 Lost in Copenhagen Early 7am flight to Copenhagen! The travelling process blew my mind with how smooth and fast it was. The German airport did not check my passport at all. I’m not sure if it’s because we are travelling within the UN or not. We were walking around in Copenhagen by 9am. Exhausted from our early morning, we ideally would have checked in at our hotel but check-in was at 3pm. We settled for breakfast and napping at a park. Napping at the park with our tired looks and stuffed backpacks full of clothes for the weekend made us look more homeless than not. But the warm nap in the sun was well worth it in my book. During our first night of exploring the city, I immediately noticed how strange Danish Krones are, making me feel like I dropped one hundred dollars on one meal. I was also blown away with the amount of English spoken. I heard more English than Danish.

7.1.18 Lost Part Two Determined to complete our Copenhagen 101 tour, we got up early so that we could visit the Botanical Gardens and the Statens Museum For Kunst (SMK), or the National Gallery of Denmark. From the Gardens that we’ve visited in the past two days, it can officially be concluded that Denmark knows how to do parks. Every park we visited was created beautifully with varieties of flowers and some kind of water feature. As for the SMK, I was slightly underwhelmed. The work in the museum was all beautiful. However, the way they displayed their temporary removed items with a scrap piece of paper was just not up to par with the high end national gallery that they advertise as. On top of that, the special exhibitions were displayed in an ugly yellow walled room that did not work with the work displayed. I think the museums that we’ve visited in Berlin set the bar a bit too high. Afterwards, we went to the airport early. This made our travel process seem longer than necessary. We had plenty of time to nap, making us look like the homeless yet again. Although flying with EasyJet made it financially friendly, the flight process is not simple. You pay for what you get. The gate wasn’t even listed on the boards until the time our gate technically “closed”, and there was lots of confusion between the Tegel and the Schönefeld flights. Setting that aside, we made it back home to reunite with Döner and the Meininger beds.

After dinner, we planned an Uno night outside. We made our first friend, Pim! He is from Amsterdam taking a solo holiday for ten days. Although the girls and I were extremely cautious of him, he grew on us and he ended up being a great friend. We all went out to a super edgey club that Pim was scared we wouldn’t get into so we divided up into pairs to go in. The place had at least five large playground forts in the back on

Visualizing Berlin seemed to come with lots of work, which intimidates me. I usually have a problem stopping my work at a 40-50% WIP level because I want to continue to refine rather than to move on to my next project. Especially because everything in the class is new to me, I feel this need to stretch my ideation process.

6.10.18 day 4 Early morning to go to mass at the Berlin Dome with 1.5 hours of sleep after coming home at 5am last night. Because it was optional, everyone who went out but me and Elijah slept in. Mass was a beautiful experience. Being agnostic and having the language barrier let me take a step back from the actual religious aspect of the service and rather see it from an outsider perspective. The organ was my favorite part. It was something I wish I could have shared my experience with Nancy. She would have loved to hear it. Even my agnostic self was thinking about how she might have been looking down at the service and listening to the organ with me. Later, we went to the Holocaust Museum. I found the stories about individuals and the video of the people the day the wall went down the most interesting. The Chapel of Reconciliation across the street had the most beautiful lighting in there. Just sitting there looking around the little room was a peaceful experience. We followed up with the Floshmarket. It was like my own Bonnaroo in Berlin. There were lots of vendors putting out their art, as well as people selling antiques and second hand clothing. They had this large field where people were singing and dancing. We watched from the top of the hill where artists were graffitiing the wall by the sidewalk. At night we had our family dinner. The dinner itself was amazing, but the kitchen was a sauna and the process was a mess. Let’s just say cooking is most likely not going to happen again.

Visualizing Berlin My project is based on a bar graph. Because bar graphs are usually associated with marketing statistics, I’m changing it a bit by stacking cubes that each represent a population. This way, my audience can immediately get a better sense of the quantity. Using two different keys to represent the population makes showing the statistics easier, but it also shows a more drastic change between the 1933 versus 1943 populations. The pieces of “paper that have the law information are based on the Reich Criminal Investigation Police Office reports from the Nazi Regime.

Dear Friends I sat alone at SDF on June 5th waiting for a flight that would take me on a trip to experience a still unknown. I now sit with friends who will be the only four individuals in the world to understand my experience in Berlin, which I can’t even begin to articulate. I’m hoping this book does it half the justice it deserves. Berlin still has a thousand of faces I’ve yet to discover, but I am a million times thankful that I can say that your faces are the ones I’ll remember when I think of Berlin. Don’t be a stranger but for now, Ciao Casey!
