A reliable, temperature controlled service Kelly European Freight Services Ltd. has forged an excellent reputation since its genesis in 1997 and has gone from strength to strength over the past four years in particular. Irish Trucker visited the company’s Lisburn, County Antrim depot and caught up with transport manager Paul Templeton to discuss the history, current status and future credentials of this exceptional freight business. Kelly European is an exeptional freight business

O

ne of the first things that struck me on my visit to Kelly European Freight Services Ltd. was just how professional the whole operation is. This business is managed in an incredibly efficient manner and that’s arguably the main reason why their services are so reliably conducted and highly-soughtafter. The directors and transport manager are on-hand around the clock; they provide a comprehensive service from state-of-the-art facilities, using a

modern fleet and an experienced crew. No stone is left unturned in ensuring that clients receive an optimal service … and Kelly European Freight Services enjoys high levels of repeat custom as a result. The fact that the entire fleet is on the roads of Europe, the UK and / or Ireland EVERY day speaks for itself, really! Transport manager Paul Templeton notes: “We’re very proud of the service we provide and we go out of our way to look after all of our customers, big and small. At the end of the day, the

success or otherwise of this company comes down to the relationships we have built up with our customers and we have put an awful lot of hard work into that.” Kelly European Freight Services Ltd. is a family-owned and -run business, enhanced greatly by a superb team of drivers, technicians and administrative staff. The Northern Ireland based company offers a complete, seamless transport package from short-term storage to distribution. Their niche is transporting chilled goods to and from The fleet is well mtaintained

Europe, but they also boast extensive experience within the UK and Ireland. Recognising that the transport marketplace is a complex, challenging and competitive one, Kelly European Freight Services offers exceptional service The fiirm offers a temperature combined with tailor-made controlled service transport and logistics solutions to meet the specific requirements of individual customer needs. Kelly European Freight Services was established in 1997 by brothers Adrian and Patrick Kelly, whose thriving flower business (Kelly Flowers Wholesale) needed a reliable method of transportation from their depot in Holland to their warehouse in Ireland. Frustrated by the unreliability of local transport companies, they realised that the only way to get it right was to do it themselves. The company started out with one unit, one trailer and three employees. Soon, other businesses also wanted their goods transported using a company with such attention to detail and punctuality. The directors have grown the business steadily and they now have a fleet of 20 units and 25 trailers, with a trusty staff of 35 running the show. The fresh and dependable fleet comprises a mixture of fully-maintained Scania, DAF and Volvo tractor units with 25 refrigerated trailers and one curtainsider. All the vehicles contain the very latest technology, including sophisticated satellite tracking systems, which provides business partners with complete peace of mind. The company specialises in refrigerated transport with dual temperature control trailers allowing a combination of chilled, frozen or ambient goods to be transported on the same trailer. Due to ever-increasing demand, Kelly European Freight Services decided (along with its sister company) to relocate to purpose-built, 50,000 square foot temperature-controlled premises at Knockmore Hill Industrial Park in Lisburn. The new facilities include four custom-built loading bays which allow up-to-the-minute loading and unloading with shortterm storage facilities available for perishable goods. The management team adopts a very hands-on approach, whether its logistical planning, talking to customers, brushing out a trailer or helping to change a tyre - ensuring

that the wheels are always turning is part of everyone’s job. To keep their vehicles on the road 24 hours a day seven days a week, Kelly European Freight Services has also established an on-site workshop, ensuring that the fleet is maintained in premium condition at all times. As well as looking after most of their own servicing and repairs, the onsite technicians also handle some service contracts for other companies. Operating 20 temperature-controlled articulated lorries across Holland, France, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and Italy, Kelly European Freight Services collects and delivers to a variety of European destinations. With up to 35 runs per week and a major emphasis on groupage departures to and from Holland (on a daily basis), the company is disciplined, dependable and versatile. As well as operating a specialist service for the European market, Kelly European Freight Services also offers full loads to Ireland and mainland UK seven days a week for chilled, frozen and ambient goods. The company also provides a groupage service from Ireland to Holland and Kelly Flowers Wholesale led to the creation of Kelly European Freight

Belgium on a daily basis and to other European countries twice a week, with delivery and collection aided by a fleet of twelve rigid lorries. Of course, one of the main problems affecting all operators at present is the exorbitant price of fuel. The transport manager admits it’s a strain but reveals that their customers are generally understanding and don’t expect them to absorb the hikes: “Everybody is having difficulty with it but the customers we have are very good and they appreciate that we have to pass it on. They know we’re not benefiting from it. It’s an unfortunate situation but somebody has to pay for it and we like to think we still provide an excellent service.” The company is more than holding its own at present and Paul hopes that they will experience consolidation and perhaps further growth in the medium-to-long-term: “Hopefully the future is bright. We’d be confident about our prospects. I don’t see any

A headline act

The impressive Banner Vehicle Centre in Ennis

Clare’s newest VTN-approved testing centre, Banner Vehicle Centre in Ennis, has made tremendous strides since its inception in January 2010. Irish Trucker caught up with company founder and owner Oliver Haugh, a man with vast experience of the commercial vehicle sector, who now oversees one of the largest workshop spaces in the Clare area.

O

liver Haugh used to run his own haulage company, so he appreciates better than most exactly the kind of service a modernday haulier requires when having a vehicle tested, repaired or serviced. Oliver has used his wealth of experience of the haulage sector to quickly develop his fledgling company, Banner Vehicle Centre, into one of the most exciting, vibrant and successful entities in its field. The company was established 18 months ago and, from its base at Darragh, Ennis provides a comprehensive range of stellar services: VTN testing for light and heavy commercial vehicles; tachograph calibration; speed limiters and plating; 24-hour recovery; mobile breakdown; and all maintenance, repairs and servicing. A veritable onestop shop, Banner Vehicle Centre offers all its services under one roof – it is the only company in Clare to provide this variety of services in one location.

46

In addition to testing, an 8,000 sq. ft. workshop offers vehicle repairs to light and heavy vehicles. “We’re the only all-in-one, test centre / workshop in the Clare area,” Oliver confirms. “We also offer a 24-hour recovery service, with a fully-kitted recovery truck that can winch up trucks and trailers. And we can do mobile repairs.” Oliver has combined his engineering qualifications, experience of the transport industry and vehicle maintenance skills to offer this firstclass service for van, 4x4s, buses and trucks throughout the Clare region. For the past decade, he was involved directly in the industry, operating and maintaining a fleet of up to 33 vehicles, having previously received a Degree in engineering from University of Limerick. As he always carried out his own maintenance, he brings a wealth of experience as a commercial vehicle technician to the table. An investment of €2m and twelve months of intensive work transformed the greenfield site at Darragh, Ennis

into a state-of-the-art testing centre. The workmanship on the project is excellent and this stands the company in excellent stead moving forward. Location is crucial in this industry sector and Banner Vehicle Centre is perfectly-placed four miles from Ennis on the main Kilrush Road, on a sixacre site with ample secure parking and CCTV security. A free pick-up / drop-off service is afforded within a 20-mile radius. One of the real beauties of Banner Vehicle Centre is the convenience of its services. If a vehicle comes in for a test and fails for whatever reason, a free quotation can be given on the spot and these repairs can be carried out on site immediately. The customer can them leave with his cert. This saves a serious amount of time and inconvenience travelling between test centre and garage and back again. All staff members are fully-trained to carry out all work with maximum efficiency, professionalism and safety. Even outside the annual VTNIRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

approved test, vehicles sometimes need a routine check and these tests – which can be a major factor in ensuring road safety - are available at keen rates. The test centre boasts two LGV test lanes and one HGV test lane. It has the capacity to test 20 LGVs and eight HGVs per day. Brake tests and pre-NCT tests are also available. Banner Vehicle Centre is an NSAIapproved tachograph / speed limiter centre containing the newest stoneridge equipment. The modern. spacious, state-of-the-art workshop can cater for any vehicle repair from the smallest car up to the largest truck. The latest diagnostic equipment can detect problems on all vehicles and repairs can also be carried out on agricultural and construction equipment. A vast store stocks commonlyused parts and other parts can be sourced within hours from

the company’s networks of suppliers. Oliver appreciates that one of the main things clients demand in these difficult economic times is value for money – as well as a fast and efficient service to keep downtime to an absolute minimum. And to guarantee customer comfort at all times, a fresh, cosy waiting room is provided with tea and coffee facilities included. What was the thinking behind setting the business up? “I’m a qualified engineer and I worked in transport myself for ten years. Having been involved in the sector, I recognised an opening for a garage in Clare offering testing and repairs under one roof. We’re employing seven at the moment and business is going well. “We’re building up

our client base all the time, having started from scratch. Each month is a new test for us and brings us new challenges, but thankfully we are doing very well so far. We can do full diagnostic plug-ins on both lorries and light commercials and we’re fully qualified to carry out all mechanical and electrical work, from changing a bulb to changing an engine, from a van up to the largest HGV and trailer.” Oliver’s decision to set up his company in the middle of a recession was a brave one, but it shows how much confidence he has in Banner Vehicle Centre’s ability to deliver the goods: “I’d estimate that the amount of heavy vehicles on the road is down by about 50% in the locality, so we have a smaller customer base to draw from. A lot of the more-established transport companies have closed down, while younger people are emigrating. A company that had ten lorries or vans might have four today, if any. That’s the reality and there’s not much fresh blood coming in, so things are tight and we have to provide a highquality service at an affordable price. “Hopefully things will pick up for the transport sector soon. In the meantime, we’ll continue to provide an optimal service. I know from working in haulage myself that customers want a competitively-priced, quick and reliable service with as little inconvenience or disruption to their daily schedule as possible. the end of the day; that’s what everybody is watching. By providing all our services under one roof, we can offer significant savings with minimum downtime. “We’re also currently working with a number of bus and truck operators to introduce a twelve-week test of major components for a very small fee. This is very popular and can save operators money in the long run as well making a major contribution to road safety, which is vital.” Oliver concludes: “None of the success we’ve enjoyed so far would be possible without the continued help and support of staff, family, friends, suppliers and customers. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support thus far and we look forward to continuing working with them into the future.”

Golden opportunities in God’s Country For a country so young in terms of colonisation, people tend to forget how old Australia really is. Some 40000 years ago, civilised indigenous inhabitants roamed its fertile lands and as anyone who has ever looked at a piece of coal before will tell you, with the passing of time comes riches beyond your dreams. The Australian resources and mining industry has been growing for so long now that even the recent global financial crisis (or GFC as they call it over there) couldn’t affect it that much. There was a minor blip in the Australian economy, sometime in early 2009 but then, when the rest of us had to deal with banking industry bailouts and IMF bigwigs muscling their way into Irish sovereignty, Australia shrugged off this minor blip and got on with the business of growing again. In the past decade, one of the most significant sectoral trends experienced by the Australian economy has been the growth of the mining sector (including petroleum, liquefied natural gas and iron ore) and a major consequence of that is the requirement for skilled workers to work within this industry. The boom has caught them by surprise to a degree, with industry experts predicting there will be a need for an additional 40000 skilled workers to work on resource industry related projects by the end of next year. For the most part the resource projects are based in Western Australia, North Western Australia and Queensland and with the massive downturn in the construction industry taking place here over the last 3 years, skilled migrants from Ireland have been taking advantage of this resource boom ‘down under’ to relocate their families lock, stock and barrel to the southern hemisphere. They have happily reinvented themselves in a society that’s not burdened with a general malaise and undercurrent of ‘doom and gloom’ running through it. People who have made the move to date have been unanimously positive, realising that if they hadn’t taken the plunge, they might still be here twiddling their thumbs, waiting for a flailing economy to turn itself around, unsure, if or indeed when that actually might IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

happen. As it stands they’re happy, their kids are happy and in good schools, with everyone enjoying the joys of outdoor life that Australia has to offer; and the money at the end of the month isn’t too shabby either! Globester Recruitment, a specialist employment agency with offices in Dublin and Cork, has been working with a large number of Australian companies over the last few years and has become something of an expert in

the placement of skilled trades people such as Plant Mechanics and Truck Mechanics into companies based in the resources sector, particularly in Western Australia. As Chief Operations Officer John Duffy says, “The opportunities out there are truly life changing and having dealt closely with the companies themselves, I can vouch for their absolute commitment to ensuring that new employees and their families assimilate well into Australian society and are happy to be there. These companies travel 12000 miles to be here for interviews so I don’t think they’d do that if there weren’t serious about what they are doing”. To date Globester has placed over 30 Plant and Truck Mechanics into their clients in Western Australia, and as Duffy says, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. “To be honest, we have 3 companies travelling to Ireland from Perth over the next 2 months and if we had 40 excellent, time served mechanics, they’d all have fantastic new jobs to go to in Australia in the morning. We are facilitating the recruitment programmes for these companies while they are here, so if anyone thinks they have the right skills and want to make the move, then we want to hear from them”. Globester Recruitment can be contacted in Dublin on 01 417 9652 (ask for John) or at their newly opened Cork office on 087 133 6008 (ask for Matt). If you are an experienced Diesel Plant Mechanic or Truck Mechanic and are looking to move to a warmer climate (in more ways than one), then why not put a call through to Globester, who will be more than happy to discuss these open positions with you in more detail. Terry Lilly continues to deliver In October 2009, Terry Lilly Commercials acquired the Fiat dealership and in the same year, they opened a new state of the art premises in Finglas, Co Dublin. Almost two years has now elapsed since that momentous year for the long established business and we speak to dealer principal Terry Lilly about the intervening 24 months.

T

erry Lilly Commercials was founded in 1990 and quickly developed a reputation for supplying top quality used light commercial vehicles. Through the hard word of Terry and his team, their customer base quickly grew and they have set standards that are rivaled by very few in this competitive industry. We all know that over the last few years, the recession that has gripped this nation tighter than a vice has had a massive impact on all trades, but the motor trade has been one of the worst hit and unfortunately some businesses did not avoid the cull, but those with the experience and guile of Terry Lilly Commercials withstood this setback and one could suggest that they are stronger and more determined for it.

Having dealt in light commercial vehicles since its genesis 21 years ago, Terry knew that they had to diversify the business in some capacity and he revealed that acquiring the Fiat dealership was an easy decision to make. “I suppose like everyone else, things just went very quiet and we were thinking what we could do to increase business. I've always found that Fiat has been a very good seller and their range of vans are very popular,” said Terry. “Plus I had never dealt in cars before and this gave our customers an extra option when they came to view vehicles.” Terry admits that it is a decision that he is delighted to have made as it really had helped turned the business

around at a time when every move has to be made with the utmost of consideration. “I'm very happy with it. Fiat are a great company to deal with and I must say it really has helped the business. In fairness we are still not as busy as we were a few years back, but I don't think we will get back to that level for a number of years yet, no one will. “But, we have to keep working away and although business is quiet, we are happy with the direction that the company is heading and we will continue to work hard to ensure customer satisfaction is guaranteed.” Through the years the expansion of the customer base been equaled by the amount of repeat custom that the North Dublin company has retained

A range of new and used cars

over the years and Terry would like to thank all for their continued support. “Yes our customers have been very loyal and I would like to thank them for the support that they have given us over the years and we aim to continue providing the same level service for many years to come. The majority of our customers would be commercial clientele, but there is a good interest in the car sales too and this is an area that we are hoping to develop in the future.” The one problem that all dealers seem to be having is trying to get finance for their customers as banks are refusing to release money, which is ironic, given the fact that it is mainly because of them that we are in this mess. However, Terry revealed that he is dealing with finance brokers that have been very helpful to his customers. “Trying to obtain finance has been a major stumbling block over the last few years and it has turned right

around from the days, banks were eager to give out loans, but we use First Auto Finance Ireland Limited who have been excellent in obtaining finance for customers. So if anyone has any worries or queries about getting finance then they should just get in touch with us and we can have a chat.” All new vehicles come with a full manufacturers' warranty, while the company also offers extensive warranties on all of its quality used vehicles. With enormous purchasing power, the company is also extremely competitive on price. A cursory look around Terry Lilly Commercials is all that is needed to establish this company's bona fides. The company is without question at the leading edge of light commercial vehicle sales in Dublin, if not the whole country. A purpose built showroom, which houses a myriad of marques and models is proof positive that this company means business.

Terry Lilly Commercials is ideally situated just 500 yards from the Junction 5 exit on the M50 motorway, but there is a whole lot more to the company than the premises. The company's ongoing success is embedded in its very fabric. Terry Lilly Commercials exudes an air of friendliness and professionalism which places potential and existing commercial vehicle customers firmly in the comfort zone. This is an establishment where the commercial customer is king. Success has been built on delivering high levels of customer service in every aspect of the business from sales right through to after-sales service. “We are commercial vehicle specialists and we know the business inside out. We have a proven track record stretching back 21 years so we have the experience to deal with the requirements of the commercial customer.” To complement the company's extensive sales activities, Terry Lilly Commercials also offers a wide range of finance options to its customers. “We offer all kinds of finance packages from contract hire, to hire purchase and leasing. We are experts in all aspects of vehicle financing,” added Terry.

A real passion for haulage To say that Will Drennan has a passion for haulage would be an exercise in understatement. The Derry man has overseen his own general haulage company through six different decades and Drennan Transport Ltd. is today an integral part of the transport sector on this island (and beyond). Irish Trucker travelled to Upperlands, Maghera and spoke to the man himself about his lifetime’s vocation.

W

ill Drennan is what we might term an industry veteran. And he’s not resting on his laurels; today, Drennan Transport Ltd. still provides an exceptional daily groupage service between Ireland and the UK, operating a fleet of 50 trailers and up to 25 tractor units as well as sub-contractors. Will employs 40 people directly and oversees warehousing facilities comprising some 100,000 sq. ft. In addition to his company

52

headquarters at Upperlands, Maghera (he formerly operated out of his home village of Tobermore for 42 years before relocating in September 2007), Will also has a second satellite depot in Dublin. He may be in the business for almost half a century, but the longserving haulage chief is showing no sign of slowing down. In fact, to the contrary, by putting his vast experience and know-how to optimal effect, he is now providing a daily UK – Ireland dry freight / groupage and

warehousing service that is quite simply without equal. All in all, it’s an incredible success story – and one where there are many chapters yet to be written. The genesis of Drennan Transport goes back to the mid-‘60s, when Will was a young man from a remote Derry village boasting a driving passion for all things transport-related. That he has managed to forge a career out of doing what he loves speaks volumes for the man’s fortitude, conviction, IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Drennan Transport has excelled since it was founded in 1965

perseverance and professionalism. Will has always placed a firm emphasis on quality service and that’s why his company has stood the test of time, for decades providing customers with a service they can depend on. “As far back as I can remember, I always had an interest in trucks,” he says. “It was natural for me to get involved in haulage and I started out with a TK Bedford doing general haulage in the North of Ireland. I set up on the 1st of July, 1965. I used to draw out of a fertiliser factory in Arklow. The roads back then were a lot different than what they are today, but at least there were no delays!” Having worked hard as a one-man, one-truck operation for a number of months, Will soon found that he had more work than he could handle on his own. By the end of the first year, IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

he had taken on another pair of hands and a second lorry. From there, he has grown the business gradually. In 1969, Will expanded the operation to include UK work and this remains a staple part of the business today. He has developed partnerships with fellow operators throughout the UK, who use his service for their Irish groupage on a daily basis. In order to provide an optimum level of service, Will has been careful not to over-stretch himself. To this end, he uses subcontractors wherever necessary, deploying a trusty team of ownerdrivers and thereby generating additional indirect employment. Every decision he makes is made in the best interest of the company, to guarantee a first-class service to a large and appreciative client base. So, what is his specialist line of work

today? “We work all over the UK and into southern Ireland. We also did a bit of continental work in the past but we don’t do too much of that any more as it’s not profitable. We specialise in dry freight, which I suppose can include just about anything. Over the years, I would say I have transported literally everything.” Add versatility to Drennan Transport’s lengthy list of attributes, so! Fleet-wise, Will operates a fleet of DAF predominantly, but also runs some Scanias and Volvos. His fleet of 50 trailers comprises curtainsiders, flats and Euroliners. As a true veteran of the haulage sector, Will has seen recessions come and go, and he acknowledges that it’s best to tread prudently and cautiously in the current climate: “We are being very cautious at the

53

In for the long haul

minute. Money is tight and nobody can afford to take any risks. We’ll just keep our heads down and continue to provide the same top-quality service we’ve always provided. I have a lot of long-term employees here and I’d like to keep them in a job, so we have to run a tight ship both for their sake and for the benefit of our customers. There’s no room for waste in haulage. “I’m taking things day by day, literally. At the moment, I’d be reluctant to invest big money in new equipment. I have a strong fleet that performs solidly and all the vehicles are fresh

and well-maintained in our own workshop. You can’t afford to run all brand-new equipment. I wouldn’t be so sure the investment needed to buy new trucks would give you the return you’d need. So it’s hard to justify buying any new trucks at the moment, much as I’d love to! “When the recession passes, we have plenty to go forward with. I have an 80-acre site here and I’m only using about five acres of that at the minute, so we have plenty of room for expansion if that’s the path we choose to take.”

Is this the hardest time Will has seen? “I have come through four recessions, but I would say this is probably the most difficult for businesses because the banks weren’t involved before. During previous recessions, there was more credit available to bread-and-butter businesses. Banks were supporting businesses but they seem to have closed their doors now and it’s very hard to get credit today, which is a major problem for companies. Fuel and other overheads are also extremely expensive, so all in all it is

Paschal Doolan with some vehicles available for hire

Leading the way For over 10 years now, Athlone Van Hire Ltd has been Athlone’s high quality van centre operating on the Dublin Road in Athlone, Co Westmeath. Irish Trucker spoke to the company’s Managing Director, Paschal Doolan, to find out more.

T

he company was first established in 1996 by Paschal and Geraldine Doolan when an opportunity arose to take over the servicing contract for An Post and several other companies. Back then, things were a bit different than they are now and things have certainly changed since the husband and wife duo first set out their stall, which has grown to become one of the most reliable commercial vehicle repairs and hire companies in the midlands region. They are glad to acknowledge the help & support of local businesses like Athlone Motor Factors, Central Bearing Supplies, Mick Mannion Test

Centre, etc when starting up & are still glad to be dealing with them. “We’re based behind Michael Moore Car Sales at Creggan, Dublin Road, Athlone,” Paschal explained. “We have the garage business for 15 years now and the van hire is going since 2000. We would employ six staff here, including myself. My daughter, Sarah Jane, works in the office.” The Commercial Fleet services garage at Athlone Van Hire had already been in operation since 1996 and both companies have grown substantially over the past 15 years that they have tripled the number of employees since they were set up. Geraldine Doolan is responsible for

the administration and finance end of things in the company, and has been an active partner since the beginning, while her daughter Sarah Jane, currently occupies a role in reception and administration. In March 2008, Paschal and Geraldine took the decision to amalgamate both companies and now they are currently trading as ‘Athlone Van Hire Ltd T/A Paschal Doolan Commercial Fleet Services’. Since setting up their van hire service 11 years ago, Athlone Van Hire has always offered a high quality of commercial vehicle hire to its customers in the midlands and all over Ireland. The quality of their services IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

has resulted in a wide range of satisfied clients around the midlands and beyond. “Our Commercial Fleet Services has been very lucky to have such a good client base,” said Paschal. “We would have contracts to maintain An Post vehicles through Dan Ryan Truck Rental and DAF Truck services Cork, other customers include BOC Gases, Kerry Foods, Jones Oil, DPD and Group 4 Securicor to name a few, so there’s a good mix there. An Post is the oldest contract we have here and we’ve had a good relationship with them since we started working together.” The company provides HGV & LGV servicing and maintenance for all makes at their garage in Athlone. They provide a genuine 24 hour seven day breakdown service also and take pride in always being contactable. They are equipped to carry out DOE preparation, tail lift repair, and electronic diagnostic fault analysis at their workshop in Athlone. Athlone Van Hire also enhance their efficiency by using workshop’ software which enables them to track their customers’ vehicle history and service records, DOE Due

dates & ability to send text reminders to customers when vehicles are due testing, tachograph calibration etc. Athlone Van Hire’s services and customer list are equally impressive and it’s certainly a credit to Paschal, who himself has been at the forefront of the company’s success, having started from humble enough beginnings. “I started out as a mechanic myself at 17 and I am working on commercial vehicles ever since,” explained the Offaly native. Since Paschal ‘started up’, his company has always stuck by their principals to make sure that every vehicle is maintained to the highest standards Manufacturers service sheets are completed for each service and DOE test dates are tracked closely. “We’re busy at the moment,” he stated. “But you just never know what’s around the corner and the way things are at Refuelling in progress at Athlone Van Hire

something that can spread, so hopefully there will be a turnaround.” Fuel costs seem to be the chief concern for those in a similar line of business to Paschal; with diesel prices having reached record high figures already this year. However, he admitted that it’s not something which is a primary issue for his company, but more so for his

the moment I suppose that saying was never as true. “Hopefully things will pick up everywhere, because when businesses around you are suffering you will begin to feel the effects, and we certainly have. Cash flow seems to be the biggest problem for a lot of companies out there and it’s

customers. “It’s not affecting us directly too much, but it is hitting our customers hard alright and in that way I suppose it has,” he conceded. “I think profits in the haulage business now are very marginal and

everything with them has to be kept to a very tight budget otherwise they just wouldn’t be able to keep themselves operating.” Their own fleets of hire vehicles are of course maintained to the highest standard & are available for short or long term hire, Self drive insurance is available, no mileage charges are applied and rates are very competitive. All information is available on their website www.athlonevanhire.com. So whether it’s 24-hour roadside assistance, commercial repairs, maintenance or hire you are looking for, be sure to look no further than Athlone Van Hire on the Dublin Road.

Getting the job done

Diversity is the key The ability of a company to diversify into other areas of expertise has saw many such firms survive the current economic recession.

U

sually these companies are long standing businesses that have many years experience behind them and are equipped to deal with the changes needed. One company that slots into that category is Cavan based P&S Civil Works, which has been supplying a specialised service to a large customer base for the last 43 years. Established in 1968, P&S Civil Works IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

has gone through many changes over the years and its ability to move with the times and meet the customers’ requirements has kept them at the forefront of their field of expertise. Having being established by brothers Pat and Sean Smith, the initial service provided was land reclamation and water works, but over the years the business developed into construction both domestic and commercial.

These days, Pat’s sons Killian, Declan and Gavin are all involved as is Sean’s son David. Both Sean and Pat have since taken a back seat in the business, but still hold an active interest. Irish Trucker speaks to Killian, who is now managing director and he tells us about the direction the company is now heading in. P&S Civil Works relied heavily on construction industry over the years as

P&S Civil are doing a lot of sewerage and water work at the moment

from its base at Drumuck, Stradone; it operated a quarry as well as developing houses and industrial units. But since the Celtic Tiger’s roar became more of a whimper, Killian admitted that they faced into an uncertain future, but it is one that that they have tackled head on. “There has definitely being a big slow down in the last few years and I think everyone involved in the construction industry felt it,” admitted Killian. “We would have about half the work force that we use to have, but in fairness, we are now working in other areas and these have kept us going.” These other areas that Killian talks about are sewerage works and water mains that has seen the Cavan based firm pick up a number of contracts in over the past few years. “We’ve also been involved in sewerage works and water mains for many years and it was a small part of the business, but now it is our main source of work. Through our experience, we have obtained a number of contracts with various councils around the country, while we have

also obtained work in the U.K.” Following the pricing of a number of jobs in the U.K, P&S Civil have won the contract to lay 13 and a half kilometres of pipeline in Scotland for Farrans (Construction) Ltd and Killian admits that this is a big boost to the company. “We were in for a number of contracts in the UK and it’s not the easiest of places to get work, especially as we wouldn’t be as well known over there. However, we have managed to get this one in East Sterling and hopefully this will lead to more work.” Killian stated that the current work force would be travelling over to Scotland for this project as they look to make a good impression on their new employers.

P&S Civil have been involved in both domestic and commercial development

“We will bring our own staff over to Scotland. The drivers and pipe layers, most of who have been with us for many years are tried and trusted. This is a very important job for the company and we’re confident of completing it to the satisfaction of all concerned. “This also means that we will be hiring more workers here in Ireland, so it has a positive effect on the economy here also, so it’s all good.” The UK is not the only place that P&S Civil works are currently pricing jobs as they look to expand the

business into other parts of Europe as well. “We are also pricing in other countries as we look to expand our portfolio, Poland among them. We’ve realised that Ireland is going to be quiet for some time and there is a need to branch out into other countries in order to be a continued success. “There are always uncertainties in this industry, but you have to look forward and that is what we are doing. Hopefully, we can build on what we are doing.” In a bid to keep overheads to a

minimum, the fleet is kept in pristine condition during its lifespan, which at P&S Civil works is usually in the region of five years, but they are also looking to improve the fleet. Another string to the company’s bow is the fact that they also operate a fuel service delivering home heating oil to their customers for over 20 years. “We hope to keep at the same level that we are at in Ireland and maintain what we are doing, while the aim in the UK is to develop the business further over the next few years. If can manage both of these, we will be very happy indeed,” concluded Killian.

A cool operation

The transport of refrigerated goods is a specialised area within the haulage industry and there are a number of companies within Ireland that provide such a service.

F

or this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile one such business; New Ross based Cummins Transport, which over the past 12 years has been providing a top quality service to a large customer base. We speak to the company's managing director Shane Cummins and he tells us about the trials and tribulations of being involved in such an industry. Cummins Transport offers a specialised service to their customers and Shane admits that the success of the business is mainly down to the quality of service that they provide. “We can tailor our services to meet the customers' total distribution needs, direct from the end of their production line or port of entry to final delivery at their customers premises.” Cummins Transport's fleet can be seen mainly operating in Europe and France and Italy in particular as they transport beef and lamb among other goods to these countries. The level of their success over the last decade or so can be measured by the number of the high profile companies that the work for. “We have a large customer base that covers a number of industries and we work on the continent most of the time. Many of our customers have been with us since the start and we are grateful for the work and cooperation we have received from them. “It is our intention to continue with the level of customer satisfaction that we IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

provide and improve on that if possible. We have an excellent working relationship with our customers and that is something we will be aiming to maintain.” With 10 highly trained employees on the books, Shane admits that it's down to a team effort in order for the business to maintain its high levels. “I have a loyal and trustworthy staff many of who have been with me since the start. It gives great peace of mind knowing that they are more than capable of carrying out any operation to the highest standard.” Of course another vital part of the business is the fleet and to this end, Shane stresses it is essential that every vehicle and trailer is well maintained. Mercedes have been the preferred choice of truck for many years now. They also have a vast array of trailers from curtainsiders to temperature controlled units, all of which are relatively new. “We run a well maintained fleet of vehicles and trailers. All our vehicles and equipment are purchased from a number of sources and are serviced by our maintenance team.” Shane admits that the haulage industry has suffered greatly in the last 18 months or so and costs have been rising on a regular basis, leaving it very difficult to provide the level of service required. “It has been a tough time, especially with the price of diesel rising so

Cummins Transports fleet can be seen all over Europe

frequently. It makes it that bit harder to survive, but we are determined to come through without reducing the high levels that our customers expect.” Hauliers call for a fair playing field has fallen on deaf ears in recent times, but there is a need for change sooner rather than later as many businesses in the industry continue to suffer. There are many guidelines in the haulage industry to be followed and Cummins Transport ensure that the always have the relevant licensing, permit approvals and current guidelines necessary. “When you are working on the continent, there is plenty of legislation to be adhered too, especially when you are transporting meat. Through our many years' experience, we ensure to avoid any problems and make sure deliveries are made on time.” Shane admits that in this industry you take each year as it comes and he points to customer satisfaction as the main ingredient for a successful business. “Our aim is to hold on to what we have and ensure that our customers are pleased with the service that we provide. We are confident of doing that. There are many issues that need to be addressed and hopefully they will be looked at. The haulage industry has suffered enough over the past few years and most operators are struggling to survive, but you have to remain confident and that is what we are doing.”

appearance and upkeep of his vehicle than the Irish owner. “I know a lot of it has to do with the better quality roads they have over there, but what we have found is that the English models are serviced more regularly and are meticulously looked after.” Once a vehicle has been sourced in England, the responsibility of transporting it back to Ireland falls to Costello Auto Trans (CAT). Based in Carrick-onShannon, Co. Leitrim, the company has specialised in car transportation between Ireland and the UK since 1986. “We have a good working relationship with Liam Costello and his staff in the same way as we have a good working relationship with the garages who we deal with in England,” adds, Lawrence, who regularly makes the trip across the Irish Sea to source the best used light commercials available. “The great thing about Costello Auto Trans is that no job is too big or too small for them. They always try to accommodate any special needs or requests that you might have.” One of LMC’s strongest selling

points is its location just seven miles from the border, meaning that many of its customers hail from the Republic. “Our location is a big thing. As well as being close to the border, the M1 motorway is only half-a-mile away with the result that we’re within a hour’s drive of anywhere in Northern Ireland. “While we always get good business from the south, things pick up a lot when the euro is strong against sterling. On our website (www.mlctradesales.com), we have a VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) calculator for our southern customers. This system provides the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) as determined by Revenue in the Republic for VRT purposes and the amount of VRT payable in respect of vehicles that are held on the Revenue Commissioners’ database. “Needless to say, our southern customers have found this service very useful.” LMC customers can also use the website to search for makes, models, prices as well as the availability of vehicles. And while an extensive range of vehicles is available to buy, Lawrence reveals that the Ford Transit is LMC’s best seller. “A lot of people still swear by the Transit, but there is a big demand also for other makes like the Volkswagen Caddy and the Citroen Berlingo. Regardless of the make or model, the bottom line is that you can be assured of a top quality used commercial when you buy from us.”

M.S.M.; the metal recycling expert A third-generation family business, M.S.M. is one of Ireland’s foremost recycling specialists. Irish Trucker visited the company’s headquarters at Cookstown Industrial Estate in Tallaght and met up with MD Con Ward to discuss the range of services provided and the ongoing success of the business.

M

.S.M. Recycling was established in 1996 and offers the experience of three generations of the Ward family (who have been in the metal recycling business for over 75 years). The Tallaght-based company provides a high-quality recycling service and is fully committed to continual development of the potential for metal (ferrous and non-ferrous) and glass recycling in Ireland. M.S.M. also provides a keen off-site dismantling service. Even though the company has developed steadily over the years, managing director Con Ward and his trusty team still provide a personal service to customers, considering

themselves part of a two-way partnership. Con supplies his customers with a top-class service; this is why he can count the likes of Diageo, Roadstone, Tuska Marine and Lightship Guillemot amongst his extensive list of clients. This year marks the 15th anniversary of M.S.M. (Midlands Scrap Metal) Recycling Ltd’s inception. Founder Con Ward is originally from County Laois but he relocated the company to Dublin a couple of years ago, having previously operated in recycling as a sole trader under the banner of Con Ward Metals. As part of a proud family tradition in the recycling sphere, he brings plenty of experience to the table, noting:

“I’m third generation. My father Charles Ward was involved in the same line of work, and so was my grandfather – also Charles – before him. I was literally raised into this and my own son Jason is in the family business alongside me now, so you could say we’re fourth-generation now. Then there’s my brother Anthony – when I started up, Anthony got involved and he’s still here today as a shareholder / director.” Con is originally from Mountmellick in the O’Moore County. M.S.M started out in Laois but moved to Tallaght two years ago to take advantage of a larger catchment area. The move has paid dividends as the volume of work has grown significantly and M.S.M. is

MSM specialise in processing all ferrous and non-ferrous metals

busier today than it has ever been. Indeed, they could be a lot busier – and could provide employment to a lot more people too! – if they received

76

more cooperation from local authorities. So what is the core service provided? “We specialise in processing all ferrous and non-ferrous metals, which covers all metals. We offer a nationwide collection service. We can supply skips of any size, tailored to customers’ needs. They might want a skip on-site long-term or we can do one-offs for farmers etc. Or we can send a lorry with a crane and grab. “The metal is weighed and we will pay accordingly. The beauty is that rather than charge companies to take away their unwanted scrap metal, we actually pay them! The good thing about the market is that these metals have a particular value and we will pay that.” As for the actual recycling of the metal, M.S.M. boasts contracts with steelworks in Spain and Turkey and has also sold further afield into even more exotic locations such as Vietnam, China and India, working through agents. The era of the containers and the global village phenomenon is a big help in this regard. “We have a new system installed where we just load 20-foot containers and we have unlimited access to countries all around the world. We can load 24 tonnes at a time onto these containers in Dublin Port and this gives us access to a world market.” M.S.M. works off a Greenstar site, boasting one-and-a-half acres where they take in materials and process them on site. The company operates its own fleet of seven chain-lift and

hook-lift Scanias covering the 26 counties and also sub-contracts additional lorries if they are exceptionally busy. To say that the move to Tallaght was a resounding success would be an understatement, as Con confirms: “We are in the process of trying to relocate to a new site because this one is already too small. We have a workforce of 27 here at the moment and – if we get our move – we could double that. If certain bodies adopted a more favourable, positive approach to metal recycling, we could create employment for another 20 or 30 people easily. But we’re not getting the support we deserve for some reason, and this is very disappointing. “M.S.M. is a very positive company. Everything we do is beneficial to the environment and we also export, which is good for the domestic economy. We are also fully tax compliant and we do everything by the book, yet we seem to run into bureaucratic red tape at every turn. We could take on 20 people instantly – and that should be seen as a priority in the current climate.” As for the future, Con concludes: “There is very good long-term viability in the recycling industry. Our order books are very strong and countries which are growing are looking for this raw material. We could expand substantially if local authorities would look at the work we do in a more favourable light.”
