Truck News Applegreen commercial fleet now Driving CarbonNeutral® Applegreen has announced that its entire commercial fleet, fuelling communities across Ireland, has begun Driving CarbonNeutral®. Applegreen will offset all carbon emissions from fuel used by its own fleet of trucks, delivery vans and company cars through purchasing carbon offsetting credits to support a clean water initiative in East Africa that will offset more than 100,000 tonnes of carbon each year. “This is a further significant step on Applegreen’s sustainability journey,” Applegreen COO, Joe Barrett, said. “We will be offsetting 2,500 tonnes of carbon per year from our own footprint by offsetting the emissions from our own commercial fleet and delivery vehicles.” “At Applegreen, we’re acutely aware of the contribution we need to make to a low carbon future, for present and future generations,” Mr Barrett said. “Carbon offsetting is something we can use to limit the global impact of fossil fuels and help our customers make a positive choice for the planet now, as we continue the transition towards electric vehicles.” Carbon offsetting is a way of compensating for emissions produced by everyday activity (including driving) by funding an equivalent carbon dioxide saving elsewhere. The transition to new low carbon transport systems is a long-term global objective, so in the meantime, offsetting enables Applegreen to give customers a carbon neutral option and fund projects that are delivering emission reductions now. Carbon neutral certification is awarded to businesses taking climate action in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol, which provides a framework for organisations to achieve credible, high quality claims, in line with best practice. PowerPlus advanced premium fuel includes a special additive that delivers fuel economy benefits of up to 3-4% while also reducing CO2 emissions (by some 3.73% for diesel, compared to unadditized fuel). PowerPlus has also been proven to actively clean and restore engines to a ‘like new’ condition as the vehicle is driven. CarbonNeutral Driving offers a more sustainable choice to Applegreen customers, allowing Irish motorists to limit their carbon footprint today whilst driving traditionally fuelled or hybrid cars. Applegreen has committed to investing a minimum of €1.5 million in carbon reduction initiatives over the next three years.

BWG Foods first to ‘plug in’ new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter BWG Foods, one of Ireland’s leading wholesale and retail groups, has become the first in Ireland to introduce the newlylaunched electric-powered Mercedes-Benz eSprinter van to its distribution fleet. With a range of 150km per charge, the zero-emission unit will soon be put through its paces servicing the company’s Dublin City centre retailers for smaller ’just-in-time’ orders. Owners and operators of the SPAR, EUROSPAR, Londis, MACE and XL brands in the Republic of Ireland, BWG Foods claims to have one of the ‘greenest’ fleets in its industry, with a number of biogas fuelled and CNG powered trucks in operation. In what it says is a ‘further expansion of its ambitious sustainability strategy’, the company views the addition of the eSprinter as another major step towards becoming a leading climate change innovator in the Irish FMCG market place. A further energy-saving move will see the company charge the electric van directly via solar panels installed on the roof of their Kilcarberry-based national distribution centre. BWG Foods estimates that deploying the eSprinter will save 20 tonnes of Co2 per year. Commenting, Joanne Mellon, Logistics Director, BWG Foods said: “We are very passionate about finding new solutions that can reduce our environmental impact and it is critically important that we invest in new technologies that allow us to pioneer less carbon intensive methods of delivery. The addition of the eSprinter to our fleet for specific Dublin City centre deliveries is yet another exciting milestone on our journey.” Praising BWG Foods for what he termed their ‘innovative and socially responsible decision’ to invest in this ground-breaking electric van operation, Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles sales manager, Fergus Conheady said: “Investment in the e-sprinter is a further example of the responsible management style that has led BWG Foods to success in so many areas of its operations. The introduction by BWG Foods of electricpowered transport is one that will be welcomed by customers and public whilst setting an example to others whose logistical needs are similar.”

Stena Line marks 25 years of Dublin-Holyhead service Stena Line is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its ferry operations between Dublin Port and Holyhead – a quarter of a century that has seen the ferry company carry in excess of 12 million passengers, almost 3 million cars and 3.5 million freight units on the route. Then trading as Stena Sealink, the first vessel to sail on the new service in 1995 was the Stena Traveller. Today on the route, Stena Line operates the Stena Adventurer and the recently-built Stena Estrid, the first of three ‘next generation’ ferries commissioned for the Irish Sea, accommodating a mix of freight and leisure traffic. Over the last 25 years, Stena Line has invested significantly in the Dublin to Holyhead route as volumes have increased significantly both in freight and leisure travel numbers. In fact, if all vehicles that have travelled with Stena Line to and from Dublin Port were laid end to end, they would circle the entire globe. “The establishment of our Dublin Port-Holyhead operation 25 years ago today has been something of a game changer for us on the Irish Sea,” said Paul Grant, Stena Line Trade Director (Irish Sea). “Holyhead has been a strategically important commercial gateway between Britain and Ireland for well over a century. Back in 1995 it was clear that Dublin Port was able to offer Stena Line the future expansion opportunities we required to help develop our business potential in the region, and that vision has now been rewarded. “Today the service is one of Stena Line’s best performing Irish Sea routes which is why it was chosen to receive the first of the company’s three new build ferries, Stena Estrid, in January of this year. At 215 metres in length with a freight capacity of 3 100 lane meters, Stena Estrid also has the space to carry 120 cars and 1,000 passengers,” he added. “However, no amount of foresight or planning could have factored in the devastating impact of the Covid 19 pandemic, but I am proud of the key role that Stena Line and my colleagues have played in helping to keep vital food and medical supply lines operational between Ireland and Britain throughout this crisis. We have worked hard to keep our guests and colleagues safe throughout this challenging time and are confident that the ferry industry will be one of the first sectors of the tourism sector to see a return to pre-Covid trading, when it is deemed safe to do so. “As we move into 2021, Brexit will also provide a challenge for our business as it will for many others. We have been engaging constructively with authorities on both sides of the Irish Sea to ensure the free flow of goods through our ports and are assisting our freight customers as much as we can in their regulatory preparations for Brexit. “As for the next 25 years, we have set a firm course on becoming the most sustainable global ferry operator, and I’m confident we have the vision and talent to achieve this ambition,” concluded Mr Grant.

Enterprise boosts Mercedes-Benz fleet with 64 new vans International vehicle rental specialists, Enterprise has further strengthened its fleet of light commercial vehicles with the recent addition of 64 new Mercedes-Benz vans – 15 mid-size Vito and 49 large Sprinter units. All finished with familiar Enterprise black and green livery, these latest arrivals bring to 105 the number of Mercedes-Benz vans the firm has acquired for its Irish operations this year, 50 of which are Vito units and 55 are a mixture of medium and long wheelbase Sprinter vans. A further 20 units are expected to be delivered later this year. All of the Vito and Sprinters supplied come complete with a myriad of safety and comfort features including Crosswind Assist, multifunction steering wheel, twin passenger seats and electric windows. With roots tracing back to 1957, Enterprise now operates in more than 30 countries with over 7,200 locations, offering customers a local and airport car and van rental service.

New LNG-fuelled IVECO S-WAY trucks make partnership between IVECO and Arcese even more sustainable Thomas Hilse, IVECO Brand President, took the opportunity during his official visit with Matteo Arcese, Executive President of the Arcese Group to the company’s new site in Basiano, to hand over 20 new Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)fuelled IVECO S-WAY NP tractors. Also present at the handover were Emanuele Arcese, the Group’s Business Road Freight FTL Director, and Technical Director Carlo La Corte, as well as IVECO’s Business Director for the Italian market, Mihai Daderlat. The vehicles chosen by the Arcese Group are true game changers in connected, efficient transport thanks to their advanced technology and outstanding services combined with a highly competitive Total Cost of Ownership. In addition, they benefit from IVECO’s industry-leading natural gas technology, which makes them extremely sustainable. The supplied vehicles are equipped with the 460-horsepower Natural Power CURSOR 13 engine, class-leading 12-speed HI-TRONIX gearbox and two 440-litre LNG tanks, one on either side. They also feature IVECO HI-CRUISE, a predictive driving system that uses GPS mapping to adjust the gear selection and adaptive cruise control. Combined with the advanced gas power technology, this helps significantly cut fuel consumption and emissions, reducing NO2 by 90% and PM by 95%. The trucks are set up to run on biomethane, a fuel generated from existing renewable sources, which makes them a perfect example of circular economy with a 95% reduction of CO2 compared their diesel

equivalents. The quiet operation in silent mode lowers engine noise to 71 dB(A), paving the way for nighttime urban operation. The excellent range – 1,600 kilometres for those fitted with 540-litre tanks – enables range-anxiety free transport across Europe even over long distances. In addition, the IVECO S-WAY combines technology and design to provide a superior driving experience and is testament to IVECO’s and Arcese’s care for the drivers’ well-being. An important technological asset of the vehicles is the Connectivity Box, which keeps the vehicles connected to specialists from IVECO’s Control Room, who monitor the vehicles at all times. This enables efficient planning of maintenance and repairs and helps prevent unplanned stops. The Ecofleet, Driving Style Evaluation (DSE) and Driver Attention Support (DAS) systems, further contribute to reducing the Total Cost of Ownership. The new IVECO S-WAY NPs are also the very first tractors in Arcese’s brand-new colours. This restyling underlines the brand’s identity, linking it to the company’s history and values while looking ahead to the future, as the company promotes ever more sustainable logistics and transport. Aftersales assistance is provided by IVECO dealer Officine Brennero, which supports customers from four sites and a network of workshops in the provinces of Trento, Verona, Mantua, Pordenone, Udine, Trieste and Gorizia.

Michelin truck tyres set new fuel efficiency record Michelin has announced that tyres from its X Line Energy range, fitted to two Volvo trucks, have set new fuel efficiency records following demanding road tests. The next generation 4x2 Volvo FM 420, operating with a tri-axle trailer at 40-tonnes, averaged 10.31mpg around a 760km road test route. This followed less than 12 months after a 6x2 Volvo FH 460 with I-Save set a new record of 9.49mpg at 44-tonnes. Both tractor units were specified with Globetrotter sleeper cabs and tyres from Michelin’s most fuel-efficient range. The FM rode on 355/50 R22.5 X Line Energy Z (steer) and 295/60 R22.5 X Line Energy D (drive) tyres, whilst the FH with I-Save was equipped with 385/55 R22.5 X Line Energy F (steer & mid axle) and 315/70 R22.5 X Line Energy D (drive) tyres. The test took place using a standard tri-axle curtainside trailer, over a set route in the UK covering 494km of motorway, with 121km of severe gradients and 145km of trunk roads. Commenting, Martin Tomlinson, Head of Media, Truck Demonstration & Driver Development at Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, says: “In the minds of most customers, fuel is everything. “Michelin X Line Energy tyres have become my default choice for our long-haul demo fleet as they help us to drive further on less fuel. Plus they match this with impressive safety, handling and durability.”

DAF CF and XF with Ultimate Package: The ultimate truck for owner and driver DAF is introducing the Ultimate Package, consisting of a range of desirable features that even further improve the industryleading efficiency, safety and comfort of the CF and XF. The package creates the ultimate CF and XF offering for both owner and driver. For many years the DAF CF and XF have consistently set the standard in terms of efficiency and comfort. It is no surprise that the trucks have won many prestigious awards through the years, including ‘International Truck of the Year’ (CF and XF), ‘Fleet Truck of the Year’ (XF), ‘Green Truck of the Year’ (CF) and ‘Construction Truck of the Year’ (CF). To ensure excellent vehicle efficiency, one of the primary features of the Ultimate Package is the Battery Energy Management system. It monitors the condition of the batteries, which is crucial in terms of optimal vehicle uptime. Tyre Pressure Monitoring is also included in the package. It constantly monitors the tyre pressure and makes an important contribution to ensuring maximum fuel efficiency. For the same reason, the DAF CF and XF with Ultimate Package are also equipped with Predictive Cruise Control. This is an intelligent cruise control system that can plan 2 kilometres ahead and allows the driveline to make maximum use of the truck’s kinetic energy. It can deliver fuel savings of up to 4%. To enhance visibility and thus safety, the Ultimate Package also contains LED headlights and LED rear lights that provide a high performance lighting, low energy consumption and last a lifetime. In this way, they also benefit efficiency and low total cost of ownership as well. DAF’s cabs are unequalled in terms of comfort: they are extremely spacious, boast unrivalled ergonomics and offer the driver the best seats and most comfortable bed on the market. And to make the life of the man or woman behind the wheel even more agreeable, the Ultimate Package contains DAF’s sophisticated Climate Control. In addition, an extra Accessories Power Supply is also standard. This 24 volt/40 ampere power supply is mounted in the roof console or locker above the windscreen and is especially designed to power a microwave. The attractive Ultimate Package lifts the efficiency, safety and comfort of every new CF and XF to the highest possible level. The package can be ordered for nearly every new CF and XF truck powered by the PACCAR MX-11 or MX-13 engines.

Fantastic fuel efficiency and dealer support sees Simec Transport return to Volvo Simec Transport has put a new Volvo FH 500 6x2 tractor unit into service, featuring an ultraspacious Globetrotter XL cab, to help keep up with the increasing demand of its busy steel haulage operation. The Newport-based business has added nine Volvos to its 20-strong fleet over the past two years, having been hugely impressed with the local dealer service, fuel efficiency and driver performance from the Swedish manufacturer. Supplied by Darren Padfield, Area Sales Manager at Truck and Bus Wales and West, the new FH is built on a 3,900mm wheelbase and powered by Volvo’s proven D13K Euro-6, Step D, diesel engine producing up to 500 hp and 2,600 Nm of torque. Jon Sutton, Transport Manager Wales, at Simec Transport, says: “We’ve gone from no Volvos to nine in two years. Since I first got in touch with Darren, the customer service we have received has been outstanding. If I ask him for a truck, I can give him the date I need it on the road, and it will be there. The trucks have all performed really well, and they’ve gone down great with the drivers. “The fuel figures we’re getting from the Volvos are also fantastic. We are a steel haulier, so the trucks are always transporting very heavy loads, close to our maximum running weight, and we are getting between 9-10mpg which is very, very good.” The new Volvo FH sports the blue and white livery of Liberty Steel Group, Simec Transport’s sister company. Both businesses are part of the global corporation – the GFG Alliance. “We needed more trucks due to the growing demand from the steelworks,” explains Sutton. “Despite the issues with COVID-19, business has been booming and as their haulier we needed to grow the fleet to keep up. We’ve increasingly moved towards Volvo as we’re very happy with the full package they provide.” This latest FH will be in operation five days a week and is expected to clock up between 110,000 - 120,000km per year. It’s been supplied on a contract hire deal with Volvo Financial Services and is protected with a Volvo Gold Contract repair & maintenance agreement. The truck benefits from Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox, which evaluates information about speed, weight, road grade and torque demand to perform every shift with precision – communicating with the engine to allow it to adjust the revs and brake-effect for maximum performance. This is combined with its impressive fuel saving potential, with every gear change timed precisely, ensuring the engine works at its most efficient rpm. The FH’s Globetrotter XL Cab offers huge amounts of storage space and comes with a two-bed resting package and a Drive Plus package, enhancing comfort and making the working environment for Simec’s drivers both safer and more practical. “The drivers all love them,” adds Sutton. “We really can’t fault any of the Volvo trucks we have, so that’s why we’ve just kept on going back to them again and again.”

H Parkinson Haulage takes delivery of seven new Stralis NP 460s to replace Stralis NP 400s Preston-based H Parkinson Haulage (HPH) has taken delivery of seven 460hp IVECO Stralis NP AS440S46T/P CNG 4x2 tractor units after successfully running seven of the Stralis NP 400 4x2s for 30 months, with each truck having covered 550,000 kilometres in that time. It is one of the first UK operators to cover more than half a million kilometres in individual gas trucks and the experience has been positive, encouraging the replacement of the 400hp CNG-fuelled 8.7-litre CURSOR 9 models with the higher output 12.9-litre CURSOR 13. The CURSOR 13 NP, engineered by FPT Industrial, is the most powerful pure gas engine on the market, producing 460-horsepower and 2,000Nm of torque between 1,100 and 1,600rpm and it features the longest oil change intervals in the industry, at 90,000km. The new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered Stralis trucks will continue where the old ones left off by servicing the four daily trips between a Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in Chorley, Lancashire and a client’s production plant in Barrow-in Furness transporting toilet roll. The trucks work 24-hours a day on a multi-driver shift pattern pulling a total payload of 8-tonnes on 15.6 metre curtain sided Longer Semi Trailers (LSTs). The combination of Stralis NPs and LSTs have worked well with the trailers offering the added flexibility of being able to accommodate a maximum of 60 pallets when required. Drivers refuel at the CNG Fuels’ Leyland gas station half a mile from the Chorley RDC, thus reducing the need to refuel during the 160-mile round trip. This has ensured each truck has been 100% powered by renewable bio-methane during its 30-month life which has further reduced its environmental impact and contributed towards the circular economy. HPH was an early adopter of gas power within its 95-truck fleet in 2018 and has been well looked after by supplying dealer Walton Summit Truck Centre in Preston. “We have been very well supported by both IVECO and Walton Summit during the last 30 months. Our gas trial has been a true partner approach and Walton Summit’s gas knowledge, advice, support and service around the clock has been invaluable. Being one of the first operators to adopt gas power has proven a positive experience and we are confident our Stralis NPs have had a neutral impact on the environment,” explained Steve Sugden, Director of HPH. “TCO costs have also been very favourable. The cost of gas versus diesel has been significantly lower during the past 30 months and it will be interesting to see how the higher power Stralis NP 460s perform on the Chorley Barrow-in-Furness route,” he added. The Stralis NP gas replacement programme has coincided with HPH taking delivery of four diesel Stralis AS440S46TX/P 460hp steering mid-lift 6x2s. These are the first non-gas IVECO trucks to enter service on the HPH fleet and will be used on the same contract as the gas trucks. Gareth Lumsdaine, IVECO UK’s Business Line Director (Truck) commented: “We are delighted that HPH is replacing its Stralis NP 400s with NP 460s, it shows confidence in gas power and the service and support provided by the IVECO brand. HPH was an early pioneer of gas and has demonstrated how CNG is a viable option for truck operators, particularly when running the high mileages covered by the Stralis NPs over the past 30 months.” IVECO Natural Power trucks are quiet running, producing less than 71dB on the PIEK Quiet Truck Test and when fuelled by 100% bio-methane emit 95% less CO2 than their EURO 6 diesel counterparts and do so without the need for particulate filter regeneration and AdBlue.

they will be retreaded at the Michelin Remix plant in Stoke, just 40 miles away – a process which saves natural resources, doubles the Michelin casing lifespan and supports UK manufacturing. Farrall’s Group has specified tyres from Michelin’s X Multi range, with Quinton Tyres replacing existing fitments across the fleet as wear dictates. All new trucks and trailers will also be specified on Michelin rubber as original equipment. An essential part of the new policy will be Michelin’s versatile X Multi D drive tyres – packed with patented Michelin technologies, including Powercoil – a robust steel casing cable which helps to make each tyre lighter yet more robust, leading to better endurance and reduced rolling resistance. Michelin move makes perfect sense for Farrall’s Group Farrall’s Group is moving its entire fleet of 65 trucks and 100 trailers onto a Michelin tyre policy. The decision follows a trial organised by local Michelin advocate dealer Quinton Tyres, which demonstrated the sustainability advantages of the Michelin product. The company used to run a mix of competitor brands but will now switch to Michelin as part of its strategy to ensure its drivers always have the “best tools to do the job”. Matthew Farrall, Managing Director at Farrall’s Group, says: “Quinton Tyres put the Michelin solution forward when we went to market for a new tyre partner and we were really intrigued to see the difference a professionally managed Michelin policy could make. The quality of service we have seen so far from Quinton Tyres has been excellent – the level of detail and technology they used to complete a full audit inspection of the fleet was very impressive. “We compared the product against data for rival brands, but it was the Michelin tyres which stood out in terms of fuel efficiency, pence per mile and longevity, particularly when we factored in regrooving and retreading. “The move to Michelin means we are now saving fuel and improving the sustainability of our operation. We take a lot of pride in our fleet and are focused on making sure the team has the best tools to do the job. It all supports the goal of delivering a reliable and consistent service to our customers.” All tyres will follow a multi-life policy with skilled technicians from Quinton Tyres regrooving worn tyres on site once the tread depth reaches 3-4mm, helping to extend each tyre’s life in its most fuel efficient state. benefit from Regenion technology within the tread that progressively reveals hidden grooves in order to maintain grip throughout the life of the tyre. “We are really impressed with the traction and allround performance of the X Multi tyres. They give us the confidence our fleet will be safe on the road all year round,” adds Farrall. “Moving to Michelin is a definite upgrade across our fleet, and it’s better for the environment too.” Established in 1956, family-owned Farrall’s Group offers logistics, nationwide deliveries, warehouse, storage and parcel services to a wide spectrum of customers around the UK from its head office in Chester.

We see this award as confirmation of our forward-looking technology and many years of industry expertise,” says Roland Klement, Board Member for Research & Development at Schmitz Cargobull. With this vehicle, Schmitz Cargobull has developed an equipment concept that will make a significant contribution to reducing pollutant emissions. The purely electrically-powered S.CUe cooling unit with integrated power electronics omits a combustion engine, and is designed to cool and heat without generating any emissions. Instead of a diesel tank, batteries are now installed on the landing gear. In addition, the system is equipped with an electrified Schmitz Cargobull trailer axle, which recuperates energy during braking, for example, reducing the time required to recharge the battery via mains power. Schmitz Cargobull was also able to take top placings in further categories. For example, the TrailerConnect® door locking system took an excellent second place in the “Safety” category. This ensures that the goods are protected against unauthorised access. Via the TrailerConnect® portal, users can define loading and unloading locations where the door locking system automatically unlocks the trailer on arrival or locks it when leaving. In the “Components” category, the new air distribution system in the S.KO COOL SMART box body semi-trailer took third place. Preventing “heat nests” and simplifying handling to improve efficiency in everyday transport were the primary goals. Schmitz Cargobull won a further third place in the “Concept” category with its EcoDuo transport concept, which has already won multiple awards. The EcoDuo system consists of two standard curtainsider semi-trailers connected via a dolly trailer and coupled to a tractor unit. With this vehicle combination, Schmitz Cargobull is advocating for the Europe-wide introduction of a transport concept that reduces the demands on existing infrastructure, reduces CO2 emissions and takes into account current transport industry standards. “We are very proud of all of the placings as they show that we are the leading trailer manufacturer when it comes to reliable transport solutions and innovations and that we are working on the right mobility concepts and innovative vehicle solutions to extensively support and continue advancing future transport and logistics activities for our customers with our products and services,” says Andreas Schmitz, CEO of Schmitz Cargobull.

DAF XF crowned ‘Fleet Truck of the Year 2020’

For the second year in succession, the DAF XF has been crowned Fleet Truck of the Year at the prestigious Motor Transport Awards. The title is the third win in five years for the XF series and represents DAF’s 19th Fleet Truck of the Year award since the first Motor Transport Awards were introduced back in 1986. With the Fleet Truck of the Year judging panel comprising influential fleet operators, the recognition is often acknowledged as one of the most important titles in the UK’s transport sector. The DAF XF was praised for its “excellent value-for-money, best back-up and good driver appeal”. In addition, the excellent fuel performance, good parts availability and low maintenance costs were named. The award provides further evidence that with its market leading fuel economy and uptime, the XF is the preferred long and heavy haulage truck for many leading fleet operators. Drivers praise the unrivaled comfort of the cab, including the best-in-class bed, excellent driver position and the unmatched interior space. “The title underlines what we already know: our XF is the best answer for any transport operator who is looking for the best long haul or heavy transport truck on the market”, stated Richard Zink, Director Marketing & Sales and member of the Board of Management of DAF Trucks. “Our flagship ticks all boxes for each and every business – reliability, efficiency, driver appeal – supported by the truck industry’s largest and best dealer network and aftersales services program.”

TIPPERARY’S TRANSPORT SPECIALISTS Tom Dineen Jnr Transport Ltd is a family-run haulage company based in Co Tipperary, currently operating with six trucks on the road. Irish Trucker touched based with Managing Director Tom Dineen Jnr recently to learn all about the ins and outs of the company and the state of business at the minute.

Tom Dineen Jnr with his daughters Leah and Ella

T

hese are busy times at Tom Dineen Jnr Transport Ltd and the plan for the Dineen clan down in Bohercrow is to keep things that way right through 2021. The company has a proud reputation for quality work down through the years, dating back to when Tom Dineen Snr ran his own venture up on 30 years ago. Since that time, the Dineen name has become synonymous with reliable and expert haulage around the Tipperary area and indeed all over Munster. Irish Trucker learned more from Tom Dineen Jnr when the man himself took time from a busy schedule to fill us in on the details. “We’re based along the Limerick Road in Bohercrow, Co Tipperary and I would have taken over the company from my father seven years ago,” explained Tom Jnr. “He had the company for 29 years and still remains involved to this day and I have a sister, Hazel, that also works here with us and I am also hugely grateful for the support of my mother Theresa, so I guess you could say it’s a family business.” Right now, Tom Dineen Jnr Transport

Ltd is operating with seven trucks in its fleet, six of which are currently on the road week in, week out. The company is busy and “getting busier”, according to Tom Jnr, with work on-going for construction and steel businesses throughout the Munster region. “We’re busy at the moment and it looks like getting busier,” he said. “During the lockdown we were still tipping away with a few things and now, thankfully, we’re back in full swing. “BRC McMahon Reinforcements is a crowd that we’ve done a lot of work over the years and we continue to have a good working relationship with them. “It’s mostly construction companies that we’re working for, with an emphasis on steel work in particular. We’d be big time into steel transport when it comes to the companies we do work for.” Transporting steel requires the right equipment and when it comes to using trucks for the job, Tom Dineen Jnr Transport Ltd never stray away from the trusted DAF brand. The company’s fleet is entirely made up of DAF trucks, which come from Interparts Drumalee Ltd in Co Cavan while the company’s trailers are

purchased in Dennison Trailers Ltd in Naas, Co Kildare. DAF have been the truck of choice at Tom Dineen Jnr Transport Ltd for some time now. “My father would have started off with Scania back 30 years ago and over the years he switched his trucks to Volvo,” said Tom Jnr. “I’ve continued on with DAF here because I’ve always found them to be a good, reliable truck. The drivers here are happy with them and their comfort, so we’ve stuck with them.” Reliability is everything in the transport game and it’s also one of the reasons why clients like BRC McMahon Reinforcements and Shannonside Galvanising continue to choose Tom

The trucks are always immaculately turned out

Dineen Jnr Transport Ltd first ahead of other competitors out there. Tom Jnr and his team down in Bohercrow are known for quality work and its part of the reason why they have been able to branch their operation out over to the United Kingdom in recent times. “They (clients) know that we are a reliable transport company that offers a quality service,” the MD put in plainly. “We’ve a bit of work ahead of us here now and have started going back and forth to the UK about six weeks ago. “It’s really starting to pick up for us now and if it continues to get busier, maybe we will be looking at adding one or two more trucks to the fleet.” The expansion is a bold one by the Dineens, especially when you take into account the current situation with Brexit. However, the early signs are promising, according to Tom Jnr, who is keen to grow the business while times are good. His father certainly took the same approach when he was in charge and is no doubt on hand to offer words of advice whenever needed, given his years of experience and active role in the company. Looking towards the coming months, as well as 2021 as whole, Tom Jnr is keen for more of the same when it comes to the current state of business. “Hopefully, we can just keep the head down, continue doing what we’re doing at the moment and keep the show on the road,” he concluded. Hear, hear.

Specialising in the transportation of food products

EXPANSION CONTINUES AT QUINLAN TRANSPORT Quinlan Transport in Thurles, Co Tipperary is a family-run business which specialises in the transportation of food products. Irish Trucker touched base with Office Manager Roisin Quinlan to learn all about what the company has been up to as of late.

B

usiness is strong right now at Quinlan Transport down in Cabragh Business Park in Thurles, Co Tipperary, and the Quinlan clan intend to keep it that way as they edge closer towards 30 years in existence. Set-up by Managing Director Michael Quinlan, the company currently operates with just over 30 Renault trucks in its fleet from its premises in Cabragh. Michael’s has three children involved in the company, Mark, Daragh and Roisin, with all three following their father into a business which has been

20

thriving as of late. Roisin Quinlan was good enough to take some time out from a hectic schedule recently to fill Irish Trucker in on all the details of Quinlan Transport. “Business is good right now,” said Roisin. “We bought the old sugar factor here in Thurles three years ago in an expansion move and thankfully it has paid off so far. “The new premises is 20 acres with 94,000 square feet of warehousing complete with loading bays.” She added: “Right now, we have a fleet of just over 30 Renaults, with 42 staff and a depo in Greenogue in

Dublin.” It’s all a far cry from where Michael Quinlan first started out with his transport venture nearly three decades ago. Back then, Michael was on the road with just one van and from there he grew his business to where it is today – operating with more than 30 trucks, between arctics and rigids, that are busy on the country’s roads all year round in order to meet customer demand. It seems growth has been the name of the game since ‘Day One’ for Quinlan Transport and the intention is

Quinlan Transport is a family-run Tipperary based business to grow further again in 2021. “We are expanding the whole time,” outlined Roisin. “Moving to our new premises was a massive gamble at the time but it’s one that has really worked in our favour.” Today, Quinlan Transport’s vehicles are delivering to bakeries all throughout Ireland, with Greenfield Foods, Country Kitchens, Irwin’s Bakery, Foods of Athenry and Twomeys Bakery. 2011 saw Quinlan Transport agreeing a deal to distribute goods for Armagh’s Irwin’s Bakery to help increase the company’s revenue considerably. The influx of extra business also helped the Thurles-based firm to navigate through the economic downturn successfully and now, almost a decade later, business is booming. So, what has been the secret to success over the years? For Roisin, she herself credits the company’s staff for its continued excellent work year in, year out. “Our reputation is our success,” she said. “We deliver on time, provide a quality service and our trucks are always tidy. “All of our staff here are second to none and the company itself has grown a great reputation down through the years.” While Roisin’s father heads up the company, her brothers Mark and

Roisin herself works in the company office and is currently in Year 2 of a supply chain and logistics course with the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT) in Ireland. All three have followed in their father’s footsteps and now make up the second generation of Quinlan Transport. With more trucks on the road than ever, business is booming at the

present time and the demand from clients continues to increase as well. For that reason alone, new trucks have been added to the fleeting and,

“We deliver on time, provide a quality service and our trucks are always tidy” sticking to his guns, Michael doesn’t stray away from the Renault brand. Down through the years, the Tipperary native has chosen Renault when it comes to the trucks in his fleet as it’s a product that he finds reliable and efficient. Clients could certainly say the same about Quinlan Transport as well. Greenfield Foods has been a trusted client for many years now and continues to have a strong working relationship with Quinlan Transport going forward. Looking towards the coming months in what has been a strange year to say the least with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Quinlan Transport is confident of further growth going forward. “In these uncertain times, every business move has to be carefully examined but we remain optimistic for the future.” It seems the company knows nothing but growth, particularly in these past few years and the bold move that brought about purchasing a 94,000 square foot premises. It won’t be long until Quinlan Transport are marking 30 years in business and who’d bet against them adding a few more trucks to the fleet and a few more customers to the list of clients along the way? The company is going strong at the present time and continues to expand and be open to new opportunities, so watch this space. Best Wishes and Continued Success to QUINLAN TRANSPORT

BCL Commercials are now a main dealer for Benalu Trailers

BCL COMMERCIALS - DRIVING YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD BCL Commercials Ltd may only be established four years, but during that time, the Co Wexford based company has gone from strength to strength as its customer base increases annually.

O

wner Derwin Hayes took time out of his busy schedule to speak to Irish Trucker about what the business has to offer its ever-increasing customer base. Having spent six years in Australia, Derwin returned to Ireland in 2010 and

in 2016 started to bring in second hand small, medium and HGV commercial vehicles. “My father drove lorries and I grew up around them as I come from a farming background which I was involved in before I went to Australia. I would have been familiar with using trucks and trailers for transport, and was driving heavy goods vehicles and trailers, so there was always and interest there,” stated Derwin as to his reason for getting into this line of work. “I started off small and to be honest I was learning as I was going on. There were a lot of trials and tribulations to address along the way, but I think I’ve learned more because of that. I bought

ten trucks and from there we built the business.” Through a network of contacts that has been built up in the last few years, if BCL don’t have the truck you are looking for, they can generally source it in little or no time at all. These days, from their base in New Ross and second location just off junction 4 on the M9 in Knocknagee, Co. Kildare (eircode R93 PD78), BCL Commercials offer a wide range of services and they are now a main dealer for Benalu Trailers. The Kildare location is Deovils yard where parts are available and warranty work is carried out, offering customer nationwide an easily accessible full back

Benalu was created in 1967

“Quality is the key word when it comes to sales” up for trailers for parts and warranty cover. Benalu was created in 1967 by Hubert Pora and Dominique Bonduelle in order to produce aluminium tippers, a concept that they invented and developed. Nowadays, a subsidiary of the holding Arcole Industries (www.arcole-industries.com), with a turnover of more than 140M€, the BENALU group (companies Benalu, Bennes Marrel, Maisonneuve and Mega) is a European leader in design and manufacture of industrial vehicles for bulk transport. “I was on holidays in France where I first came across Benalu trailers. They have an aluminium chassis which I was intrigued by and I did some research on

26

them and found that they were a very practical and durable trailer. “From there I looked into the dealership and looked at this as a way of moving the business forward. The low weight of the trailer due to the aluminium chassis is a major selling point. “We now stock a full range of Benalu trailers and they are proving very popular amongst our customers as our first orders have come in and we are hoping to push it more throughout the remainder of the year.” BCL Commercials also offer steel chassis trailers as they carry a range of MEGA trailers, a brand that is also part of the Benalu Group. That means all customers have a choice of aluminium

or steel chassis trailers. BCL Commercials still trades in LGV and HGV vehicles, but the main focus is now on trailers and Derwin has the

dealership for both north and south of the border. “We are the only main dealer for Benalu trailers on the Island of Island and we are excited to bring this new product to the Irish market, even though the company has been in existence for many years. “The feedback that we have had has been very good and once you have a good product that is half the battle. I can really see these trailers taking off over here.” BCL Commercials as main agents in the UK and Ireland for the Benalu group are also dealers in the UK and as such can take orders from overseas and they are accustomed to shipping vehicles abroad on occasion. “We have many years of experience in shipping vehicles throughout the world. Whatever your requirements we will be happy to provide you with a shipping quotation to your required port anywhere in the world. All documentation can be prepared and arranged including all shipping and delivery notes.” BCL Commercials are also now agents for the RTB trailer weighing system. Investment is key to the success of any business and Derwin revealed that they are continuously investing to ensure that the business keeps going in the direction that they want it to go. “It is essential to re-invest into the business and that is what I have been doing. I like to keep things tight in that we are a small operation, but that is not to say that we want to grow. We do, and will do at our own pace.” The Benalu brand practically sells itself as the product is renowned for reli-

Aluminium tippers ability, strength and durability as Derwin revealed that the technology of the products was advancing all the time. “There is a massive interest in our products, especially this time of year as hauliers upgrade before the season really begins.” Derwin stressed that it is not just about the sales at BCL Commercials Ltd

The Benalu brand is renowned for reliability, strength and durability

as he knows the importance of customer satisfaction. “Quality is the key word when it comes to sales, but we place as much of an emphasis on our aftersales as we do sales. There is a big repeat customer base here and it is our job to ensure that they are satisfied with the service we provide both before and after a sale.”

I identified that as an opportunity to do a little bit of consultancy and it was also mainly to do with having some extra time to spend with my young son at that time. I wanted to be flexible for him because I live rural and I have to say that it has worked out really well to date. “I set up MBR Waste from nothing and have grown it to now having a bank of about 50 clients. Some of my clients come and go, use my services and I might not hear from some of them for another five years when they want to use my services again to review their permits. Then I have bigger clients

where I look after their facilities permits and all the waste administration for them.” Maggie continued: “My main specialities would be waste collection permit collation and submission. Obviously, I would remain the agent until the permit has been issued for the client. The same applies for waste facility permits and then I would be their environmental consultant, managing the conditions of the permits. I also do waste characterisation studies for large companies and apartments, annual environmental returns, and environmental operational procedures. I can provide a planning consultant as well.” Advanced Waste Recycling Ltd is included in MBR Consultancy Ltd.’s list of satisfied clients and here is what it had to say about its experience of dealing with Maggie: “Advanced Waste Recycling Limited have been working with Maggie Renwick of MBR Waste Consultancy Ltd for over 10 years now. I have recommended MBR Waste Consultancy Ltd., to others and would have no hesitation in making a recommendation again”. Gotvista Ltd (T/A Orange Skip Hire) is another high-profile operation that would have no hesitation in endorsing MBR Waste Consultancy to prospective clients: “MBR Consultancy Ltd has been our waste partner for over 15 years. In

this time MBR Consultancy Ltd have helped us develop a waste management plan which has both reduced the volumes of waste we produce and has significantly cut back on our waste bills. “We find MBR very responsive and would totally recommend their services based on our experience in the waste industry”. When asked to outline what clients such as Advanced Waste Recycling Ltd and Orange Skip Hire continue to pick up the phone to her, Maggie answered: “The fact that I am a one person consultancy works in my favour as it allows me to build up trust with clients, plus I do not charge excessively high fees. I suppose it is just long-established relationships to be honest with you. I’m not just Dublin based, I deal with people nationally, and there aren’t too many challenges that we aren’t able to get around in conjunction with the client. I always guide them through every step of the process including the paperwork that’s required.” The high esteem in which MBR Waste Consultancy is held within its chosen field of expertise has surpassed Maggie’s expectations and she is grateful for the support she has

received throughout the journey. Jim Kells previous Chairman of IWMA ( Irish Waste management Association) played a key role in the initial setup of my business. Jim introduced lots of clients to my services, I will be forever grateful to him for this scenario. It helped my business to grow rapidly. He is also very well respected within our industry – so that really helped too. “At the start, I went to a Fingal Enterprise - Women in Business meeting with a friend of mine (Linda Minto) who wanted to set up her business and I ended up qualifying for a grant. I was assigned a mentor, Michael Bradley from the Fingal Enterprise Board, who gave me great guidance initially and had great faith in me. “The Fingal Women in Business and its CEO Oisin Geoghegan provided me with great tools along the way, while I get great support and help from my son Cameron, as well as my accountant Brian Gormley who has been one of my best friends along the way. I also greatly appreciate the support of my loyal clients. They have been very good to me, very decent, and I look forward to continue working with them for many years to come.”

The family-run enterprise has developed an enviable reputation as one of the leading breakdown recovery companies in Northern Ireland.

In tandem with its increasing workload, A1 Recovery Specialists has taken major steps to enable it to satisfy the growing demand for its services. “We’ve got a lot bigger,” Darin Savage revealed. “We have just opened a new state-of-the-art premises in Church Street, Dromore and it has made life a lot easier for us. “We still have another yard but this yard is the main yard now and at any

An impressive fleet of recovery vehicles given time now we are holding 200 vehicles. We also have a workshop for the lorries, a secure bay for vehicle inspections, which holds 30 vehicles, and another workshop (30ft x 18ft) for holding specialised cars. “It also has office space, a bathroom and a kitchen while it’s a secure compound. Every foot of it is secured by CCTV.” He added: “Business has actually doubled for us in recent times so we took on more work and put more lorries on the road and we are growing year on year.” Darin and the A1 Recovery Specialist team understand that if you have a motor vehicle accident that this can be a very stressful time and they provide a professional and courteous service at all times They have a large fleet of recovery vehicles which includes vehicles with cranes which for up to 9 tonnes and up to 20 tonnes. “We rebranded our vehicles as well recently, changed the logo and the company colours on our lorries to a white livery with black and red graphics. “We decided it was time for a change, we wanted to freshen things up – you get sick of the same colour after a while!” he quipped. “We have updated our fleet as well with the purchases of a Land Rover 90 and a Merlo telescopic lift for off road work.” A1 Recovery Specialists Ltd prides itself on its quick response times while they are cost effective when it comes to recovery and fuel drain. A motorcycle recovery service is also available. They operate a 24/7 service and no job is too big or too small. “At the minute we cover most of

Ireland,” Darin outlined. “We work closely with other companies such as Dons Recovery (Belfast), SGK Recovery (Dungannon) and Swift Recovery (Dublin) so we have the ability to reach all parts of Ireland very quickly to recover vehicles. “We are proud of our speed and professionalism and we have all the vehicles and equipment that is necessary to get the job done.” Two years ago, Darin added another string to his bow with the opening up of MD Trauma Clean, along with fellow director Marie Fagan, which is based in Glasgow. MD Trauma Clean offer a professional ‘specialist‘ cleaning services to domestic and commercial customers throughout Scotland. These include extreme (classed as challenging cleaning jobs that require specialist equipment and trained personnel), trauma (removal, cleaning or disposal of items that have been contaminated with body fluids/ blood or tissue matter) and biohazard (recover properties that have been rendered uninhabitable or unsafe as a consequence of contamination with biological hazards). “MD Trauma Clean is also really growing at the minute,” he stated. “And if, for example, we bring a car in with blood or anything else inside the vehicle

here to our yard, they would come over and clean the vehicle in our yard. They are specialists in crime scene cleaning. “Overall, we are very happy with how things are going,” Darin commented as the conversation switched back to A1 Recovery Specialists. “Even since the Coronavirus, we haven’t had a day off. We’ve been going 24/7. We see it all here and, unfortunately, sad times come a long with the job as well, but we have to just get on with things.” If you require breakdown recovery then contact A1 Recovery Specialists for a free, no obligation quote. he Dublin based company focuses on the transportation of refrigerated pharmaceutical goods and they can count all the leading pharmaceutical companies in Ireland as their customers. For this month’s edition of Irish Trucker, we profile this family run business and speak to director Keith Jones about the

service that they provide. Using a modern and efficient fleet of Scania trucks enables the company to guarantee their customers a high level of service which sees them transport goods to cities all across the U.K and Europe. Satellite tracking systems ensure that the company can monitor closely where a load is at any time, thus giving the customer the peace of mind that their goods are in safe hands. Indeed, not only are the trucks fitted with GPS, but so too are the trailers. All their refrigerated trailers are fitted TK tracking systems. GPS and GPRS technology are used and linked with the refrigeration unit’s microprocessor controller. This enables real-time information about the trailer to be available regarding current location and

current temperature status. It also allows them produce a thermograph in graph format or tabular format for each customer as required at collection or delivery point. Their refrigeration units are set up with unit alarms, which report immediately showing the code, description of the Contact Details: Jones International Transport Ballyboughal, Co Dublin Tel: (01) 843 7178 e-mail: keith@ Jonesinternational.ie www.jonesinternational.ie

Jones International Transport is a GDP certified company that specialise in the handling of complete refrigerated transport jobs which sees them carry a range of pharmaceutical and medical products. Last year, the company moved into a new two-acre site in Ballyboughal, Co Dublin and Keith revealed that they are happy with the direction the business is taking. “Business is challenging at the

moment,” said Keith. “We were very fortunate to be working during the lockdown and we were seen to be providing an essential service delivering pharmaceutical and medical products all over the country as well as the U.K and Europe. “It is a specialised service that we provide, and we have been doing that for the past ten years now, before that we had been doing general haulage and air freight from the mid-nineties when the business was first established. “Then the recession hit, and a lot of the smaller factories were forced to close,

while the bigger factories diversified. We had to do the same and we invested heavily in a new fleet of refrigerated trailers, which was a big risk to take, but one thankfully that has worked out for us.” As stated the fleet comprises mostly of Scania trucks, but Volvo are used also, while for the trailers, Chereau and Schmitz are the preferred choice. “The trucks and trailers are changed every five year and our preferred dealer is McElvaney Motors who we find provide an excellent service. It is essential to keep both the trucks and trailers in

The drivers are very experienced and are highly trained in all aspects of transport regarding our work. They are the ones that are at the forefront of the company. They all take great care of their trucks and get the job done efficiently and effectively as possible.” Keith has three brothers and a sister involved in the business as Paul, Adrian, Nicholas and Helen have all been a huge part of the success of the business also. One of Ireland’s premier vehicle breakdown, diagnostic and repair experts

S

pecialising in all aspects of commercial, agricultural and plant machinery, Loughlin Plant & Truck Repairs has over the past 13 years and counting earned a stellar reputation as one of Ireland’s premier vehicle breakdown, diagnostic and repair experts. With two mobile units on the road, the Mayo-headquartered company provides a comprehensive range of solutions to vehicle, plant and machinery owners nationwide, including everything from breakdown and recovery to diagnostics, servicing and preventative maintenance, covering engines, transmissions, hydraulics, wiring, electrics and welding. Founder / proprietor Enda Loughlin is

a vastly-experienced and highly-skilled fitter who works extensively for the quarrying, civil engineering and haulage industries, repairing and servicing crushers, diggers, tar machines, road planers, dump trucks, tippers, trucks, trailers, agri machinery, etc. In keeping with the nature of the work – with customers invariably unable to bring their trucks or plant to him – mobile, on-site diagnostics and breakdown repairs account for the majority of services provided. Indeed, as the Loughlin Plant & Truck Repairs workshop in Kilmaine was destroyed in a fire earlier this year, all work is currently carried out on site. Going forward, Enda’s plan is to construct an even bigger workshop, which will enable

him to provide his customers with the best-possible services on offer, be it mobile or in his own garage. “I’ve been in business since 2007,” notes the Mayo man, reflecting on the genesis of Loughlin Plant & Truck Repairs. “Although we’re based here in Kilmaine in Mayo, we work all over Ireland. No two days are the same and you never know where you’re going to be called to. “I was in Galway earlier on today and was in Limerick earlier in the week. Recently, we’ve been called out to Naas, Dublin, Enniscorthy, Drogheda, Cavan, Monaghan, Sligo … literally, it could be anywhere in the country. We’re always on call and make it our priority to get out to our customers as quickly as

possible and to get their machinery back up and running, professionally and with the minimum of downtime.” Constantly upskilling and keeping himself up to speed with the latest technology in all types of plant and machinery, Enda and his team have the wherewithal to diagnose and repair faults or damage in the full range of quarry, construction, civil engineering / roadworks, agri and haulage machinery and /or vehicles. “We work mostly for civil engineering companies nationwide,” Enda continues. “We do a lot of contract

Providing unrivalled diagnostic and repair services to operators all over Ireland work repairing machinery involved in roadworks projects, where we go out on site and diagnose and repair crushers, eight-wheel tippers, tar machines and road planers, diggers, hammers, dump trucks – anything from the motor to the injectors, hydraulics; whatever the issue is, we’ll get to the bottom of it. “On the breakdown front, we also do some oversupply from the local main dealers if their own vans are busy.” In keeping with the decidedly dismal nature the year that’s in it, with the coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc, Enda suffered a major setback when his workshop was burned down. Instead of dwelling on the negative aspects of this unexpected curveball, however, he’s going to use it as an opportunity: “It set us back but nobody was hurt and we can build a new workshop. That’s the plan now. We were doing a lot of work on the road anyway, so we’ve been able to adapt and I’m going to build a larger workshop which can facilitate bigger machinery. We’ll keep going.” Such positivity and a can-do attitude have been instrumental in the

48

growth and enduring sustainability of Loughlin Plant & Truck Repairs as a viable commercial concern. From a young age, Enda has possessed a keen passion and enthusiasm for machinery, inherited from his father, Eamon

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Enda Loughlin is one of the best in the business

Loughlin, who was also a well-known local mechanic / technician: “I’ve been working at this all my life,” he confirms. “My father was a fitter and I served my time working with him. He went more into cars and vans while I moved more towards the heavy vehicle and construction side. Together, we built the new workshop in 2000 and I started to do light commercial work, etc., before diversifying to work for civil engineering companies.”

Looking to the future, Enda is optimistic that there is scope for further growth of the business: “I have a lot of plant diagnostics and my plan is definitely to grow the business. We have the tools, equipment and experience to provide a great service and our customers are happy with that. I’m in a bit of a hole for the next year or so due to the fire but I’ll build the new workshop and then look at taking on some new lads. “Fortunately, with a lot of the crushers

and diggers and tar machines, we would go out to them anyway, so that service hasn’t been affected at all,” the affable Mayo man concludes. “I have invested a lot in diagnostics and in training and I’m hopeful that will pay off in the long run. You are never too old to learn and you need to keep on top of things.”

manufacture and distribute a wide range of equipment for the concrete, materials handling and soil remediation applications. These products are sold directly to customer / end user in Ireland

HMF are one of the world’s leading crane manufacturers and the UK but for other export markets such as Scandinavia, USA, and Canada local dealers are appointed to market the products and provide after sales support. Tim O Riordan outlines: “I set up my first business in 1985 when I think unemployment was at an all-time high close to 20%, that recessionary period I think continued to the early nineties and emigration was rampant. “The main reasons for the success of the company in a sector which has been particularly volatile to economic activity is the continued investment in R & D to improve existing products and

the development of new products in response to customers’ demands. “In this regard Enterprise Ireland has been instrumental over the years to help fund such activity and provide specialist expertise. Also continually striving to achieve high quality and provide accessible after sales service and support to customers has been cornerstone to the longevity of the business.” Tim’s son Conan O’Riordan who is an engineering graduate heads up the Purchasing & Spare Parts departments of the business. 52

Irish Trucker caught up with Tim O’Riordan recently to learn more about this diverse venture down south and the state of business at the moment. “Business is doing ok right now,” Tim

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

explained. “Covid upset our plans early in the year and we were partially closed from the end of March until late May. “2020 is not going to be our greatest year but we have to get on with it and just wait and see how things turn out.” Indeed 2020 has been a challenge for most businesses throughout Ireland and, like any other, Value Tech Ltd will look to grind it out in these unprecedented times. As it stands, the company is the sole Irish distributor for LIEBHERR Truck Mixers and Conveyors and HMF Truck Mounted Cranes. Both Liebherr and HMF are north European equipment manufacturers based in Germany and Denmark respectively and are renowned worldwide for high quality, cutting edge technology. To help sell these products in Irish market which tend to be the more expensive than the competition, Value Tech develop and manufacture a range of complimentary products to provide more complete niche solutions for its customers. Such solutions include the innovative Value Tech VTM 110T radio controlled low level truck mixer mounted telescopic concrete conveyor developed in 2005 from an idea incepted by Tim O’Riordan. This conveyor design had many advantages over other types primarily in the areas of safety, operator friendliness, and labour saving and proved to be an instant favourite for on-site placement of readymix concrete. The concept has since being configured to mount on front discharge mixers in USA. Other solutions include Value Tech VTC 90T Truck Mixer Telescopic Drop Chute also optional with radio control, Value Tech Swop Body System which provides customers maximum utilisation of expensive HGV chassis / driver by allowing them change from mixer / conveyor / tipper / crane body quickly, safely and with minimum weight penalty, and semi-trailer mixer with PTO or auxiliary engine drive system. All of the equipment is constructed from top quality high tensile steels giving maximum strength, and increased payload to yield maximum return on investment for the customer. Both the Value Tech truck mixer telescopic conveyor system and truck mixer telescopic drop chutes provides ready mix concrete companies or their subcontractors with a convenient and cost-effective solution to concrete delivery and site placement requirements.

Truck mixer turnaround time can often be reduced while increased revenue can be achieved by accurately placing the concrete for the customer. The concrete can be poured up to 16.5 meters from the truck, to a height of up to 8 meters and a depth of 2 metres. Linear telescopic movement allows for a 20-meter length of wall pour without moving the truck while the conveyor also rotates through a 270-degree envelope about the rear centre line of truck mixer to ensure accessibility to large area for concrete placement. The Value Tech Truck Mixer Conveyor System provides maximum benefits for operators engaged in the readymix concrete business both in terms of revenue return on investment in equipment and the potential for generation of new business with the increased service provided. “We would have first taken over the truck mixers in Ireland for LIEBHERR around 1997/98.” Becoming the sole Irish distributors for LIEBHERR Concrete Technology is a far cry from where Tim O’Riordan and Value Tech Ltd first started out back in 1995.

Things were slow getting off the ground back then but it seems they managed to find their feet in the space of couple of years, having earned the LIEBHERR dealership. Prior to ’95, Tim operated another business venture before founding Value Tech Ltd. “I was a production manager for an engineering company in Cork in a previous life,” he revealed. “I started my own operation in 1985 and ran it for 10 years until I saw a niche in the market for the kind of products we currently promote.” The rest, as they say, is history. Today, Value Tech Ltd has a team of 14 staff although this was to be increased in 2020 as the company engages in further R & D investment programme. This was temporarily delayed due to COVID 19 but is now up and running again. In concrete alone, the company manufactures and distributes truck mixers, articulated mixers, tractor drawn mixers, truck mixer conveyors, truck mixer telescopic-chute, tele-belt trucks, concrete batching plants, concrete recycling plants, pan mixers for wheel loaders and agricultural tractors or skid

mounted versions. Things have come a long way in 25 years and today Value Tech Ltd has a glowing reputation all over Munster (and beyond) for its impeccable service. Asked what the secret to success over the past quarter of a century has been, Tim responded: “I think it’s down to quality and service. We’re still getting the repeat business here because we take exceptional care of our customers. “We provide a one stop shop where we manufacture, install, paint and commission in-house and offer our customers a full after sales service.” Looking towards the months ahead, the Managing Director is optimistic and says the company has a couple of ideas in the pipeline that he hopes will come to fruition in early 2021. “We have a few ideas for process and equipment next year,” said Tim. “We are hoping to produce more products here in the early part of 2021. We’ll just have to see how things go between now and then.”

Maghera. With almost 50 years’ experience between them working in the engineering industry, Barry and Desi McErlean possess a wealth of knowledge which enables them to provide their customers with a service of the highest quality. “It’s been a case of so far, so good,” Barry says. “We took a chance by deciding to go out on our own and thankfully haven’t looked back since. We’ve earned an enviable reputation in a short space of time and have been gradually building up our list of clients through word of mouth and recommendations from satisfied customers. We’ve got tremendous support from hauliers, construction companies and farmers in the area. “Both of us worked in SDC Trailers where I was the chassis shop manager and Desi was on the road carrying out repairs to piping, wiring and brakes, and also fixing ABS faults. SDC was a great place for us to learn our trade. The experience we got there has stood us in good stead.” Images on its Facebook page of immaculately refurbished low loaders, beavertail trailers, scrap metal trailers, dump trailers, flatbed trailers, tipper trailers, refrigerated units, onsite containers, loaders and even JCBs highlight the quality of Revolve Ireland LTD’s work. The company’s experienced engineers can carry out both minor and major trailer repairs, and can fully refurbish your vehicle to include manufacturing and modifications, shot blasting and painting. Revolve’s dedicated team can also make over your vehicle to specific customer requirements. In addition, the heavy vehicle specialist can carry out routine Safety Inspections in line with your company’s transport requirements along with preparing vehicles for PSV. “All our work is carried out in-house. No job is too big or too small,” Barry continues. “While we mainly do trailer repairs and truck refurbishments, we’ve also branched into cab and chassis rebuilds. We’re now a one stop shop for all your heavy vehicle needs. There aren’t too many jobs that we can’t do. We can do everything from bodybuilding to wiring repair. Repairing and refurbishing Manitou loaders has become something of a speciality for us.” The painting is carried out by Oliver McErlean, who is a brother of Barry and Desi’s. When it comes to respraying,

Quality workmanship, customer satisfaction and value-for-money are the cornerstones of the Co. Derrybased company as Barry explains: “We do a really good job and we’re price competitive. We take great pride in our work and can repair or refurbish any size of trailer or truck. We’re starting to get a lot of repeat business which is always a good sign.

over Ireland to us here in Monaghan. “He knows Scania inside out and we would have one customer who brings his trucks all the way up from Kilkenny to us, while we have another in Mayo. “The guy in Kilkenny had an issue with a truck which he brought to a few places, but they couldn’t solve the problem, but Darren did, and he has been bringing his trucks here ever since.” Ninety percent of DGC Motor Ltd’s work would be with Scania, but they would cater for other makes as well as Adam revealed that they were kept busy. “We would be very busy all the time, the customer base is growing all the time. The majority of our customers would be around Monaghan, but like I said earlier, we would have customers all over the country.” The family run business has not been afraid to invest as recent times have seen the workshop being extended as well as new equipment being brought in. “The lads are always investing in the business and I think they realise that they need to in order to keep up with the demand for their services. We have a van on the road and do emergency call outs for the customers.” The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all our lives and businesses are no different as Adam revealed that they have put all the necessary procedures in place to ensure their own and their customers’ safety. “We were closed for a few weeks during the first lockdown, but the lads invested in ensuring the premises met the necessary regulations.” There is no doubt that DGC Motors Ltd is a company with a bright future, they know what they are about as do their customers who show great trust in them to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible without reducing the high standards that they have earned a reputation for producing.

“Darren is just 31 years of age and already he has a great reputation when it comes to maintaining Scania trucks. I think the aim is to expand the business further down the line. The customer base is growing all the time and the aim is to ensure they are all satisfied with the services that we provide here.” Nothing beats experience when it comes to business and providing a service to customers. The longer a company are operating the more experience they gain and when a customer knows that they are dealing with someone that has many years’ behind them in their field of expertise, they feel that bit more at ease than they would if it was someone that has not been in business as long. To this end, you will not get a better service than that at DGC Motors Ltd, especially when it comes to Scania issues, there are few than can solve problems quicker than Darren and his team.

Fleet managers, take the uncertainty out of fuel prices.

Best Wishes and Continued Success to KC Commercials

Talk to Emo today about our fixed price fuel options.

Unexpected global events and general volatility in the oil market can suddenly impact on oil prices.

Fixed Pricing is a method of hedging your exposure to fluctuating fuel prices, bringing predictability to your business costs and protecting budgets for the period of the contract.

So, if fuel is a key component of your business costs, it’s time to consider our Fixed Price Contract offering.

Oil prices are currently at a level that may make fixing your fuel price for a set period of time an attractive option. The benefits of fixing your price address many of the issues around taking the market price each time you place an order.

Why choose Fixed Pricing? Issues with taking the Market Price

Benefits of Fixing Your Price

Fuel prices constantly fluctuate, making costs unpredictable

The variability is removed, you now know the price you are paying for fuel

Your business is heavily reliant on fuel in its operations

This significant element of your costs is now known based on the volume you anticipate using

Fuel price volatility negatively impacts your budgeting activity

Budgets can be more accurately set and more closely adhered to as a large unknown is gone

Large increases in fuel prices may occur

Insures against potential crippling increases in fuel prices which are outside your control

“A lot of the people here would have many years’ service and the aim is always to encourage them to stay. A lot of training goes into each employee and it is great for the company to benefit from that. Without the staff we have, the company wouldn’t be where it is today, simple as that and they are greatly appreciated for all the efforts they have put in.” KC commercials refurbish equipment on vehicles and to avoid any downtime to their customers, they offer courtesy vehicles for the duration that their vehicle is in the garage. Jimmy revealed that the feedback from their customers has been very encouraging to say the least as it has nothing but positive. “Our customers are very happy with

KC Commercials provide an unrivalled service & fabrication. With accreditation from the IPIA (Irish Petroleum Industry Association), KC Commercials carry out both safe load pass and tank testing at their state of the art facilities in Kinsealy. Also located at the five-acre site is a fully equipped workshop with four bays, while they also have a CVRT test lane the exact same as test centres, which is used for the pre-CVRT test. “There has been massive investment in the business over the years, particularly in the last few where a ‘Centre of Excellence’ has been developed which includes and ADR bay, and state of the art fall arrest system for working at height and diagnostic technology which replicates that of a port facility loading gantry,” said Jimmy. When it comes to diagnostics, what the team at KC Commercials don’t know is not worth knowing. They do everything in regards to ADR and they are the only company on this island that has accreditation both north and south of the border. “We can carry out work throughout the 32 counties and we are the only company in the country that can do so.” There is no doubt that this is a forward thinking company and Jimmy praises owners Brendan Kealy and Robert Cray (now deceased) for their foresight to drive the business forward.” “There has always been a massive emphasis on training and they have gone above and beyond in that regard as some of the staff are the most qualified in their areas in the country. The training would cover all areas of the business from management right down

to the skilled workers and office staff, everyone is encouraged to grow within the company. “Our Welders are coded to standard BS EN 9606 for stainless, aluminium and mild steel with additional PED approvals. “The compliance side of a business is sometimes neglected, but that is not the case here and it is managed very well. We have a software management system in place which assists the transport manager and others to make sure the business runs as smoothly as possible.” With such a focus on the employees, it is no surprise to learn that KC Commercials have a small turnover of staff, something that the company strive to achieve.

the service that we provide, but that is not to say we can rest on our laurels and we are always looking at ways of improving the business.” As stated, KC opened a new depot in Dublin Port which is managed by Brendan’s son Simon. “The facility in the Port made sense as the majority of our customers like Reynolds Logistics and Stobart are based in there, so we can look after all of them as quickly as possible. As approved operators for pressure testing tanks, KC also provide leakproof testing and thorough examinations on vehicles. “An intermediate test should be carried out every three years after the tanker is put into service. All testing in this facility is carried out to standard EN 12972 by highly trained and qualified technicians.Uniquely , the test facility at KC Commercials(trading as Tank Safe Solutions) monitors all pressure test values remotely with data logging equipment and records same to cloud based systems. As part of our ever improving philosophy, we are currently testing digital CCTV systems for internal monitoring of the tankers thus reducing

O

perating with 14 trucks on the road, MGM Logistics Ltd specialises in general haulage and refrigerated transport “at all levels” and right now, business is flourishing up in Newry, Co Down. The company has been established since 2015 and currently employs 15 full-time staff from its base at Unit 1A, Sandy Road. Recent times have seen MGM Logistics Ltd adding two new Scania R450s to its impressive fleet. “We do general haulage at all levels from refrigerated trucks to flat trailers,” MGM Logistics Ltd Unit 1a, Sandy Rd, Newry, Co Down BT34 2LB Phone: 075 574 42544 MGM operate with 14 trucks and an array of flat trailers and extenders to go with them

explained Marty McEvoy. “The majority of our work is flat steel trailers. We’d have over 30 flat trailers here and the majority are extenders.” The company has grown year on year since 2015 to the point where it now operates with double figures on the road. That’s a far cry from when the company first started out. “My father drove trucks all of his life and I suppose that’s how I got into it,” he outlined. The company started with one truck and grew from there. One became two trucks and then into three, now MGM Logistics have 14 altogether on the road. MGM Logistics Ltd’s fleet is made up of 12 arctic trucks and two rigids, with an array of flat trailers and extenders to go with them. In recent times, the company has added two brand new Scania R450s to the fleet, which have been running superbly on the roads ever since. Known for its excellent service and quality of work, MGM Logistics Ltd invests in top class machinery to ensure the delivery of top class work. Scania has always been the firstchoice brand when it comes to trucks and will continue to be going forward. “We go with Scania because I suppose I’ve always driven them down through the years and find them a great truck,” said Marty. “We buy them off A & M Commercials and over the last five years we’ve never had any trouble with them as a truck. They’re one of the best trucks you can buy and we find them efficient and very reliable.” Customers could very well say the same about MGM Logistics Ltd as a general haulage business. The Newry-based company has had a quick rise in the space of five short years even though it was tough getting off the ground at the very start. The success of the venture is down to the effort of all the team involved, with ten drivers involved now all playing a crucial role in the business. It’s fair to say that business is booming at the present time though and it looks like staying that way heading into 2021, despite some of the challenges out there for businesses at the moment. “We’re extremely busy right now and are back and forth to the UK a lot. “We cover all over Ireland and all aspects of the UK. Thankfully, lockdown didn’t affect us too badly and hopefully things will continue to stay busy for us

here going forward.” Should the busy trend continue than MGM Logistics are likely to take on more drivers in the coming months. It has indeed been a rapid rise for the company over these past five years, so what has been the secret to success? Having versatile drivers in his staff team have played a key part to the growth and success of the business to date. “We would get a lot of repeat business from customers here,” said Marty. “I would say they choose us first because all of our drivers here are very versatile when it comes to flat trailers. “From moving fridges to anything else really, we’re very versatile here and we always try and adhere to the customers’ requirements. “If we are dealing with a customer during a job, we’re doing that job with that customer’s hat on and always looking at it from their point of view.” Looking towards the coming months, all at MGM Logistics are keen for business to keep going the way it has been as of late. MGM Logistics Ltd’s trucks have been ‘flat out’ on the roads these past couple of months and now there are two more to add to the fleet. While he is mindful of the challenges Brexit, and even Covid-19, might bring his company, Marty remains optimistic as ever about the future. “We’re just going to keep going,” he said. “We’ll just have to see how Brexit goes for us and everyone else. Yesterday things changed again with it and I’d rather deal in the facts than try and guess what’s going to happen with it. “We can only try and hope for the best.” For all your needs in general haulage, don’t hesitate to contact MGM Logistics Ltd in Newry today.

DDL Express is an exceptional family-run company

DDL: DELIVERING THE GOODS FOR 20 YEARS Providing unrivalled courier / delivery services throughout the greater Dublin area, DDL Express is an exceptional family-run company that has gone from strength to strength since its inception at the start of the millennium. We sat down with founder / managing director John Daly to find out more about the full range of high-quality services provided by this outstanding, industry-leading operation.

R

enowned for consistently delivering prompt and professional solutions, DDL Express has forged a stellar reputation as one of the capital’s premier transportation companies. With a fleet of 19 immaculately-maintained and -presented vehicles on the road, from small vans up to flatbeds, curtainsiders and trucks ranging from 7.5 to 18 tonnes, all fitted with GPS tracking, DDL is West Dublin’s fastest-growing courier company, providing a flexible and all-compassing range of delivery services throughout Dublin and surrounding counties. The quality and dependability of the services consistently provided – including same-day, express, specialised, nationwide and out-ofhours deliveries; part-load or full-load – has enabled DDL to develop lasting, long-term relationships with up to 55 regular customers, including prestigious partners like Newbridge Silverware, Irish Pipeline, DID Electrical, Fitzpatrick

& Henry and Lyreco, to mention just a select handful. The family business – fronted by MD John Daly, whose brother Charlie is sales manager – has grown exponentially down through the years, nay decades, and was enjoying a phase of sustained expansion before the Irish economy was knocked sideways by the novel coronavirus outbreak and resulting lockdown and restrictions. “We’re expanding all the time,” John notes. “Naturally, we were down a bit with the Covid, but we’re gradually taking the lads back on and getting back closer to where we were at the start of the year. Demand fell for some of the products we were delivering – such as the Nespresso coffee range, which we deliver all over Dublin for Lyreco – and we’re still down about 30% at the moment, but it has been a difficult time for everyone and we’re gradually building it back up again.” The Daly family are synonymous with the transportation sector. Following

in the footsteps of his father Charlie, John has been involved in trucks all his life, going right back to when he was a teenager… “My Dad was a trucker – he worked for almost 3o years in Arnotts and then worked for McArthur Steel - and all my brothers are involved in trucking, too,” he confirms. “I left school at 15 and went straight into work – I’m 48 now and have been involved in transport and logistics all my life. Myself and my brothers used to argue over who’d go with my father in the back of the truck during the summer holidays when he

went on trips down the country. There were no Sat Nav or mobile phones back then. I can remember him stopping at phone boxes at the side of the road to make phone calls … things have changed a lot since then. There have been big advancements and we’ve all had to educate ourselves accordingly and move with the times to offer the best service possible.” John is 100% focussed on ensuring that every drop is completed promptly and professionally, to customers’ exact specification. To guarantee absolute customer satisfaction, the staff wear uniforms, are courteous and polite, and the vehicles are liveried and tracked. “These are all important considerations if you want to show that you are professional in what you’re doing. At the end of the day, we do it right. Branding is very important and we took the step of putting our name on all the trucks and vans two years ago. The uniforms create a good impression and tracking of the vehicles provides customers with peace of mind. With the touch of a button and a quick glance at the screen, we know where every vehicle is in real time. “In this game, you really are only as good as your last delivery and this is something that you have to keep in the forefront of your mind at all times. You simply cannot let your standards drop, even for a second. I have a superb team alongside me. I have all local lads

A team of experienced and qualified drivers are part of the company working for me and they have all been with me long-term. You have to look after them and in turn they will look after you and stay with you, which is important for providing a consistent service. They know the routes like the back of their hands at this stage. “My wife, Niamh, helps out in the office, looking after emails and phone calls and getting in the money. and I genuinely wouldn’t be here without her. “I’ve been with Lyreco for over 15 years and that would be typical of the relationships I’ve build up with other companies. They have stayed with me. You’ll have the odd exception where somebody will leave over price but generally they will learn and come back again as there’s no substitute for a quality service, on time with no damage

Charlie Daly is Sales Manager

DDL is West Dublin’s fastest-growing courier company

The Daly family are synonymous with the transportation sector and no delays. We pride ourselves on giving a quality service at a fair price. All the lads know what they are doing and we divide out the drops to make sure everything is manageable and that nobody is overworked. The maximum anyone would have to do in a day is ten or twelve drops at most and I never ask anybody to do something I wouldn’t do myself. We must be doing something right because we have a large base of loyal customers and we’re picking

up new work all the time, without ever having had to advertise.” Nothing could have prepared John for the disruption that the Covid-19 pandemic caused. From mid-March, the viability of many Irish companies was severely tested… “I was down 55% at one point and was on my own for four weeks, which was terrible,” he reflects. “Slowly but surely we are getting back. This is a tough game and profit margins are tight so you need to be close to full

capacity. “You have lads depending on you, and I do my best for all of them. I have good lads working here. The brother, Charlie, is great and Noel and Wayne are two others I’m very close to. Noel is exarmy and is the transport manager. He had brought discipline to the company and has the lads checking the trucks and vans, keeping them clean, wearing uniforms and ID badges … that has all gone a long way towards creating a professional impression, which we then back up with our services. “Charlie has a great personality and all of our customers love to deal with him. He is always there ready to step in to my shoes and take over when I need him to and I always include him when decisions have to be made as I value his input. Honestly, without Charlie’s help, DDL Express would not be where it is today. “To be honest, I take a wage out of it every week and nothing else – the rest is invested back into the business. And I’d be very hands-on … I could be up at 4am and then into the yard to see all the lads off before heading out on deliveries myself. You have to keep on top of it because there are so many overheads with diesel, insurance, parts, etc. that the margins are very tight. “All the vehicles are owned and paid for and that certainly stood to us when the going got tough. Of course, you have to maintain the fleet as well. You have to do it right, there’s no two ways about it – the last thing you want is a truck breaking down.” Going forward, John hopes to get a franchise going and to expand into warehousing and distribution. “That’s the plan,” he concludes. “We were in the second year of a five-year plan, building towards that, when the Covid hit, but we’re back on track now and I’m hoping to get to that within the next two years.”

Tony Boylan Transport is celebrating its 20th anniversary

STILL GOING STRONG

This January, Tony Boylan Transport celebrates its 20th anniversary and for any business in the haulage industry to reach such a milestone is a great achievement.

T

here is no doubt that the haulage industry is one of the toughest sectors to survive in, the overheads are huge, the time constraints are demanding, while rates can be volatile. However, for some, it is a way of life and that is the case for the Boylan family who have been immersed in trucks all their lives. In 20 years of business, Tony Boylan has seen it all, adding a pandemic to the list of tribulations to beset the country during that period. Tony has passed the reins of the day to day running of the business to his son David, but the founder of the company is still heavily involved in the industry as he is now passing his experience on to fellow truck drivers. “My father is qualified as a CPC

trainer. Before, he set up the business in 2001, he was working on the continent for many years, so he has a vast amount of experience, which he is now passing on to other drivers,” said David. Tony Boylan Transport has a core base of customers that have been with them for many years and focusing on the transportation of food stuffs and liquid sees them work for many of the country’s top producers and manufacturers. David admitted to Irish Trucker that 2020 has been a strange year to say the least due to the pandemic, but stressed that they were continuing to supply the level of service that their customers have become accustomed too. “We slowed down a bit during May. There was so much uncertainty there at the time. Since then though, we have been very busy. We adhere to strict rules especially when hauling food stuffs and liquids. The trucks need to be sanitised after every delivery and we invested in a sanitising machine for that. “Our customers are all very busy, so that means we are busy also. The work still has to be done, it’s just that we have had to adjust slightly with the new regulations in place, which have resulted in us investing more in this area to ensure the safety of our employees and customers.” One of the main reasons for Tony Boylan Transport’s success over the years has been the employees. David stressed that they are fortunate to have such reliable and experienced drivers. “Some of the drivers would be here years, there are 16 employed in total and everyone knows their role inside

Tony Boylan Transport work for many of the country’s top producers and manufacturers out. The drivers take great care of the trucks and they are on first name terms with the customers, without them, we wouldn’t have had the success we had.” David did reveal though, that there is a concern throughout the industry about the shortage of drivers entering the profession. “It is not easy to source experienced drivers these days. It is definitely an ageing profession as there are not many young people looking at driving lorries as a career. And those, who are interested are finding in impossible to get insurance. It is certainly something that needs to be looked at in the near future or we could be faced with a driver

The company run a fleet of 10 trucks and 28 trailers

“The fleet is kept fresh and we would upgrade on a regular basis, our oldest working truck is 141, while the majority of the ten trucks we have are either 171, 181 or 191. It is essential to avoid as much downtime as possible and keeping the fleet this new means we can also cut down on unnecessary breakdowns.” The Ashbourne, Co Meath based company run a fleet of 28 trailers, 26 of which have come from Dennison Trailers and David admits they are delighted with the service they get. “We’ve been dealing with Dennison’s for our trailers and Delaney Commercials in Naas for our trucks for many years now and the service that both give are second to none, whenever there is an issue, which is seldom, they

Total care is taken of the pristine fleet both are willing to help.” David stated that the aim was to expand the business when the time was right and hopefully grow as their customer grows even in these uncertain times. “Definitely going forward, we would like the grow the business more and we feel that the work is there to do so. At the moment, we are looking at adding a new truck to the fleet, but we have to approach every decision with an air of caution due to Covid-19. Hopefully, we don’t go into another full lockdown, I don’t think we will, but there could be further restrictions put in place, which could affect us, we just have to wait and see. “However, the main focus will be to ensure that our customers continue to be happy with the service. We are always looking at ways to improve it and going forward we are confident that we can.”

The family-run business specialise in transporting waste and recycled goods across Ireland

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS… WITH TWO NEW FLEET ADDITIONS

Celebrating 30 years in business, Ed Murphy Plant Hire & Haulage Ltd in Killarney, Co. Kerry recently took delivery of two stunning new trucks which have been put to work transporting waste and recycled goods across Ireland.

he new additions to the nine-strong fleet are a Scania 650 6x2/2 and a Volvo FH13 540. Purchased from AOC Commercials, the Scania comes with the very popular and efficient 650hp engine and an S-Cab High. It also comes with some nice exterior features such as Colour Coder Front Grille, Colour Coded Kelsa Light Bars, Dura-Bright Alloys and some

We also bought two new DAF 530s and another Volvo 540 last year.” The Murphy trailer fleet includes walking floors, tippers and packers. The walking floors are a mix of Legras and BMI, while the tippers are Fruehauf. Legras is recognised worldwide for its innovative moving floor trailers. It’s all haulage now.” Ed Murphy Plant Hire & Haulage Ltd would like to take this opportunity to thank its customers and suppliers for their continued support. The company would like to say a big thank you to John Liston for organising loads and keeping everything running smoothly. Here’s to the next 30 years of this successful Kerry operation!

THE ONE-STOP SHOP FOR ALL SPARE PARTS

Stocking a comprehensive range of spare parts for all makes and models of trucks, trailers, coaches, cars, tractors and agri machinery, Carrolls Truck Parts provide an unrivalled service to vehicle owners nationwide. We dropped into their premises at Funshog, just outside Ardee in County Louth, to discuss the ongoing success of this exceptional family-run business with father-and-son team Jim and Jamie Carroll.

ly service at competitive prices. to customers nationwide as quickly as possible,” notes Jamie Carroll, who runs the family business alongside his father, Jim. The genesis of Carrolls Truck Parts goes back almost half a century to 1972, when Jim started out initially as an agricultural machinery dealer. Spotting a niche in the market, he began sourcing and stocking quality truck parts in 2012 and has never looked back. “We’ve been in business as Carrolls Truck Parts for eight years,” Jim confirms. “Before that, I did agri

equipment – sales and service – but we now concentrate on stocking and supplying a full range of parts for trucks, buses, trailers, tractors and agri machinery as well as car parts. I sold tractors and agri machinery for 35 years, but it’s parts only now.” Serving garages, fleet owners and private motorists alike, Carrolls Truck Parts stock literally thousands of spares in their spacious warehouse, conveniently located at Funshog, off the N2 south of Ardee. Typically, orders are taken over the phone and will go out for delivery within 24 hours. One of the challenges facing any commercial spare parts specialist is to try to offer discerning vehicle owners - who are themselves intent on keeping both downtime and overheads to a minimum - the optimal balance between high quality and affordable prices. “You definitely have to strike the right balance and we try to be as competitive on everything as we possibly can be,” Jim confirms. “The bottom line is that if you aren’t competitive, you won’t do any business.” Boasting a wealth of experience gained over decades of looking after customers and their vehicles, Carrolls Truck Parts import an exhaustive range of brand-new, OEM-quality parts for all makes of trucks – Scania, Volvo, Iveco, Renault, MAN, Isuzu, DAF, etc. “We have a vast stock here on site and, once a customer orders something, will have the components out on the road early the following morning,” says Jim. “Say for example an order comes in at 12 noon, then we will have it packed up by 5pm and our courier will get it out for the next morning. So it’s a very good, speedy service and nobody, from truck drivers to farmers, wants any downtime, which is why we go out of our way to provide as efficient a service as we can.” Jamie adds: “We have two vans on the road ourselves as well a small Isuzu truck, for local deliveries, within a 30-40km radius, which we can get out very quickly. The warehouse is 130ft x 100ft, covering two storeys and, with new parts coming in all the time, we will generally have whatever the customer needs. “There are orders of parts arriving in every day and large pallets come in twice a week. There are always new items coming in as well as replacements or restocks, so the range is growing all the time and we have more and more on the shelves with each passing week. Even though it’s a fairly large warehouse, we are slowly running out of space and we might have to extend inside the next five years if the current rate of growth continues.” In the best tradition of a typical family business, Carrolls Truck Parts provide outstanding service levels with a personal and transparent touch. “Jamie manages the business, while my grandson Glenn is also involved and Brigid Carroll looks after the accounts. Sean Samson is also an important member of the team,” says Jim. Carrolls Truck Parts,
