NRA calls for lower toll charges The National Roads Authority recently announced that it feels motorists and hauliers are being over charged at a number of toll plazas around the country. The call from the NRA will put more pressure on the toll operators to reduce their prices at certain plazas, and if it goes ahead, it will be a huge relief to hauliers around the country, who are paying exorbitant amounts on the tolls every week. NRA spokesman Sean O’Neill stated that according to by-laws in place that if the consumer price index falls for a 12-month period that the operators of the toll plazas are also obliged to reduce their prices. However, this has not happened yet even though the NRA has asked five toll operators to reduce their prices and only one has complied so far
NRA feels some toll prices need to fall

Ocean freight evens out The levels of Ocean freight being transported since the New Year is levelling out, according to analysts after the four major trade lanes started to stabilise. Container derivatives broker FIS said demand after Chinese New Year, as well as possible service reductions, would govern rates. It said: “Many in the market will be waiting to see the levels of demand on the east-west trades once the lunar New Year holidays come to an end in China. Coupled with the level of service reductions in this period, this will set the rate levels and, possibly, the future trend. “A bearish sentiment is prevailing in the market, with many predicting that at best rates on the Europetrade will be flat, but it is more likely that the downward trend seen on the SCFI since the beginning of Q2 2010 will continue into Q2 2011. “With the word from carriers that utilisation is currently all-important and with several new vessel additions and large service changes planned by carriers, it is most likely that the downward pressure on rates will continue.”
Bord Bia hail export increase The increase in export of food and drink is being applauded by Bord Bia as the economy bids to find its feet once again. Over the course of the last couple of years, Ireland has suffered greatly due to the current economic recession, but exports last year hit record levels to give the country some hope. This also helped the haulage industry as there was more work on offer for the many hauliers who have struggled to survive over the past couple of years. The chairman of Bord Bia, Dan Browne, said all the major sectors recorded increases - with dairy exports jumping by more than €300m, or 17%. Meat and livestock exports were almost €200m higher, while beverage and prepared food exports were also up significantly. Bord Bia welcomed increased sales on continental Europe.
Taxpayer may have to pay €350m Poolbeg clause The development of the controversial Poolbeg incinerator has suffered another set back following the news that the taxpayer may have to pay out €350 million in financial penalties. A new report compiled for former Environment Minister John Gormley has revealed that a 'put or pay' clause in the council's contract with American waste management company, Covanta could cost as much as €14m per year. Waste volumes would have to increase again at Celtic Tiger rates for the next 25 years to avoid the financial penalties. In a letter to his successor, Minister Eamon O'Cuiv, the leader of the Greens John Gormley called for the findings of the report to be published in full immediately. The Irish Waste Management Association (IWMA) has also said that the Hennessey Report into the proposed Poolbeg incinerator should be released in full without any further delay. Brendan Keane, IWMA Spokesperson, commented: “For a significant period of time the IWMA has been warning Dublin City Council that the agreement it has made with Covanta and Dong Energy to build and operate a 600,000 tonne incinerator at Poolbeg is a disaster for taxpayers and ratepayers. We have shown – through independent research – that the waste does not exist to fuel this incinerator at the size proposed, and that building a facility so oversized in the Dublin Region will have a deeply negative impact on the taxpayer, on recycling, on jobs and on the entire waste sector. “The Hennessy Report bears out many of our concerns, and highlights the huge financial risk that this project poses to taxpayers. The complete report should be made public immediately so that all parties in this sorry saga can assess it in full. “A 600,000 tonne incinerator is the wrong size for the Dublin Region. In the Dublin Region the recycling rate is now almost 40%, employing thousands of people, and the rate is projected to grow to 60%. Waste rates are falling – sharply – and the days of Celtic Tiger growth are gone. And, of the four Dublin local authorities who originally came together to develop this incinerator, one has exited the municipal waste market and another is preparing to do likewise. “In addition, according to a High Court ruling in 2009, private operators own the waste that they collect, meaning that Dublin City Council cannot force operators to use Poolbeg who choose to treat waste higher up the waste hierarchy, such as through recycling processes. “The Poolbeg incinerator is a relic of the ‘Celtic Tiger’, and the potential waste of money associated with it now mirrors the types of losses more commonly associated with NAMA. “The IWMA is fully supportive of incineration as part of a balanced approach to waste management but it is essential that it is appropriately sized in the market. Not alone does the Poolbeg project represent a massive loss of money to the taxpayer, it poses a risk to recycling rates, to employment, and to our chances of developing a balanced approach to waste management.”

Shipping rates set to increase Shipping rates are set to rise
A consultancy firm is calling on all shipping firms to brace themselves for yet another increase in rates as companies focus on market share instead of profitability. The latest Container Forecaster report from industry consultant Drewry’s states that shipping lines have not learned their lesson from 2009 when rates plummeted as carries opted to gain market share. Neil Dekker, Editor of the Drewry Container Forecaster, said: “Unfortunately, the desire to maintain market share seems to be the primary driver in the east-west trades at the moment. “Carriers have resolutely refused to take out capacity from the marketplace, despite the fact that head-haul utilisation factors were in the low 80s [in mid-December] and spot rates were falling steadily week by week. “Although carriers released record, or near-record, financial results for 3Q, this is no time for complacency and concentrating on market share instead of profitability. “The trends being displayed are the same as were evident in recent times and are usually the precursor of a downward spiral in the market.”
Container volumes increase across Europe Container volumes across Europe between January and November last year were 15.4% higher than what they were in 2009. The Container Trade Statistics (CTS) has released its latest data and it shows that exports from Europe to Asia increased by 3.6% from the previous year. Rates on the trade continued to soften in November, for the fourth consecutive month. CTS’s Asia-Europe price index, which uses average rates in 2008 as a base figure of 100, was 102 in November. Poor roads contribute to deaths
Poor road conditions have caused fatal accidents
The National Roads Authority has admitted that many of the country’s busiest roads are sub-standard and unsafe, after it was claimed that as many as 12 fatal road accidents last year were down to poor road surfaces. The conditions of the country’s busiest roads lies in the hands of a number of groups and this is where the confusion as nobody really knows what they are looking after. The stark warning from NRA chief executive Fred Barry comes as the budget for road improvements continues to be cut in the wake of government spending cutbacks. "A lot of the older roads are not properly designed, particularly the secondary routes but also those on national secondary routes. The issue here is one of funds. We would like to be making more improvements,” said Barry. "Many of our national roads do not come close to meeting design and construction standards," he recently told the
Oireachtas Committee on Transport. Typical deficiencies included poor road-making material, inadequate roads alignment, poor visibility, bad drainage, inadequate crossing points and deficient pavements. Much of the unimproved national road network is not up to standard.”
PRL Group adds 52 Permanent & seasonal jobs PRL Group, distributors of ambient, chilled, frozen foods and healthcare products to the retail market nationwide, has added 52 jobs, (27 permanent and 25 seasonal) to its expanding business and is anticipating further significant growth in 2011. The €50m logistics and supply chain firm which operates from warehouses and distribution centres in Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork has won a long term contract with Unilever Ireland for the distribution of Unilever’s range of ice cream products in Ireland. The contract, which will also expand PRL's sales operation, sees PRL bring its current workforce to over 300 permanent staff and the contract win firmly establishes PRL as the largest provider of frozen food supply chain solutions in Ireland. In November 2010 the PRL Group, headquartered in Rathcoole, Co. Dublin, also won a contract with Danone to take over the distribution of the Danone chill product range in the Irish market. Commenting on the expansion PRL Group’s co-founder and Executive Chairman, Michael Brannigan said; ”the recession has greatly influenced market dynamics in the food distribution and logistics business and as companies look at efficiencies and competitiveness, PRL is in the fortunate position to have strategically aligned its operations for the new environment. We look to 2011 with determined confidence and, with further contracts in prospect; we anticipate significant further growth in our business in the year ahead.”

Greencore expecting strong year Food group Greencore, which has hundreds of trucks on the roads is predicting a good year if the euro can maintain its current level of strength. It added that the first three months of its financial year have seen a good underlying performance at its convenience foods division, with continued business revenue of €208.7m, up 7.6% on the same time the previous year. Its two key categories - Food to Go and Prepared Meals - continued to see favourable trends and Greencore said their operating performance remaining strong. But ingredient and packaging inflation is more pronounced and the group said it is managing this through a combination of selling price increases and cost reductions. It added that its US business traded in line with expectations as it bought a new fresh sandwich business in December.

Port of Cork traffic increases in 2010 While all sectors at the Port of Cork experienced a challenging period during 2010, the end of year total trade traffic shows an increase. Total trade in 2010 through the Port of Cork amounted to 8.8 million tonnes, an increase of 8.6% compared to 2009. One area of increase which has a very positive effect on the local economy is the increase in exports from the Port. Total exports at the Port of Cork have remained strong increasing by 10% to date, in comparison to 2009. Exports are a key driver in the successful recovery of the Irish Economy and the Port of Cork is committed to continuous support in the growth of international trade for both current and future economic prospects. The container business at the Port of Cork has remained constant with over 150,000 TEU handled in 2010. Animal feed stuffs, fertiliser and other trades have shown a significant increase in 2010. Oil traffic has shown a slight increase of 3.5% as a consequence of lower levels of economic activity; however it continues to be a significant part of the Port of Cork business. Commenting on the end of year trade traffic results, Mr Dermot O’Mahoney Chairman of the Port of Cork said: “The Port of Cork is pleased to announce that total trade traffic in 2010 has shown an 8.6 % increase on 2009 traffic. With 98% of all goods imported or exported from Ireland moved by ship, the importance of ports to our economy is vital. The Port of Cork is a key link to the continued economic success of the entire Munster region and the challenges now for the Port of Cork, is to continue to develop. This requires that we be visionary and seize opportunities presented by emerging trends and logistic supply changes.” He continued: “While the next four to five years will be challenging for us all, we need to continue to promote the fact that Ireland is an excellent investment location and is well placed to capitalise on growing global markets.” 52 cruise liners visited the Port of Cork during 2010 bringing over 100,000 passengers and crew to the region. According to research carried out by UK consultants GP Wild, the average in-transit spend per passenger, while visiting an Irish port is €73. This is a significant contribution towards the local tourism economy. Ferry passenger numbers though the port also increased mainly due to the welcomed re-commencement of the ferry service linking Cork with Swansea. The weekly ferry service from Cork to Roscoff with Brittany Ferries also had a successful year. In 2010, the Port of Cork developed a recreational strategy to improve the marine leisure facilities around Cork Harbour. The first project carried out was the construction of a 100m marina on South Custom House Quay. This long term investment for the city of Cork has already proven to be very popular among local boats and visiting boats. The Port of Cork expects 2011 to be even busier.

Renault launch new programme Renault Truck Commercials are launching a new demonstration programme that will initially be shown around the U.K before being released in Ireland. The demonstration programme is designed to showcase the features of the Renault Premium Long Distance as one of the most productive, comfortable and fuel efficient tractors available on UK market today, as well as providing a strong image under which to promote the strengths of the Renault Truck Commercials dealer group. Christophe Blazere, managing director of Renault Truck Commercials UK Ltd, explains, “I joined Renault Trucks Commercials in the UKin June 2010 and quickly identified the need to bring the 11 sites closer together in terms of operating as a cohesive dealer group, rather than them promoting themselves as individual sites, which had been the situation in the past. “There is ‘strength in numbers’ and, as a group, we are able to offer class leading levels of customer service and product choice to UK truck and van operators.” More than 80 demonstrations have already been booked across the Renault Truck Commercials sites, so the vehicles will shortly become a very familiar sight on the UK roads. Irish Ferries voted Ireland’s best ferry company ... on the double It’s official! Irish Ferries is Ireland’s favourite ferry company...to be sure, to be sure. In the space of just one day, the ‘best ferry’ title was awarded to the company at two separate prize giving ceremonies held in Dublin recently – both won against competition from all of the UK and Continental ferry companies operating into and out of Ireland. The first award - one that the company has won on a number of occasions in the past was presented by the influential travel industry magazine Irish Travel Trade News based on responses received from Irish travel industry staff. Later on the same day, at an inaugural awards ceremony hosted by the Irish Travel Agents Association, the company was again called to the podium to receive their Best Ferry Company award, also voted upon by staff in each travel agent’s office up and down the country. Delighted with their success, Irish Ferries Marketing Director Tony Kelly commented “our staff can be doubly proud of their achievement – the first time that any ferry company has taken two top awards on the same day.”
French port strikes help increase Eurotunnel traffic The amount of heavy goods vehicles travelling through the Channel Tunnel increased by 42% last year, according to a report released. Last year’s general strike caused mayhem in many of the French ports leaving hauliers from Ireland and the UK facing great difficulties in reaching their destinations. “The growth in Eurotunnel traffic should not hide the fact that there was an estimated 16% contraction in the [cross-Channel] market on 2007, and just 3% growth on 2009,” said the report. “This situation – largely the result of the economic crisis – has brought visibility to the different strategies employed by the different crossChannel operators. The ferries appear to be chasing short-term volumes, while Eurotunnel continues with a long-term commercial policy. “Overall, even though the economic crisis is not yet over and there is still substantial competition across the Channel, the return of Eurotunnel’s customers is clear. Truck traffic increased 35% in the fourth quarter.”

Fuel sales drop due to bad weather Petrol and diesel sales plummeted over the Christmas period as less people were travelling on Irish roads because of the adverse weather conditions. Hard frost and heavy snow left the roads treacherous for a number of weeks in the lead up to Christmas and after the festive season. This meant that less people opted to drive on the roads and so were using less fuel. David Blevings, of the Irish Petrol Retailers Association, said it was another blow for the industry already reeling from price hikes, carbon taxes and levy increases. “We are not surprised by these figures,” he said. “Our members have been reporting a downturn in sales generally.” Latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) also show an overall 3.6% dip last month in retail sales, when car sales – which were boosted through the scrappage scheme – were taken out of the equation. Petrol and diesel sales fell over the Christmas period
Transport firm to shed 50 jobs DFDS has ceased running its last two Irish Sea services
Danish transport company DFDS has ceased running its last two Irish Sea services at the end of January, leaving 50 people out of work at its Dublin depot. DFDS had tried to sell the routes, but failing to do that and making no profit, the decision was made to close the routes down. Sailings from Dublin to Birkenhead and Heysham ceased from the end of January and DFDS CEO Niels Smedegaard admitted that it was a difficult decision to make.“It is with deep regret, that we close these routes. Despite an impressive effort from employees and a very comprehensive analysis of the market and evaluation of turnaround scenarios, we have not succeeded in developing viable solutions for the routes.” said Smedegaard. “Market conditions in the area are quite simply too difficult and, unfortunately, we do not envisage any improvement in the near future.”
IRHA defend hauliers The Irish Road Haulage Association is confident that the majority of hauliers comply with the legislation that governs vehicle safety, drivers’ hours and overloading amongst other areas. Haulage companies have come in for some criticism over the past year or so for failing to comply with the necessary legislations that are in place to make the transportation of goods on our roads safer.
Stena buy Irish Sea vessel Stena North Sea will begin operating the ro-pax Dublin Seaways ferry after the company purchased the vessel from DFDS Seaways for €24 million. DFDS ceased operating their Irish Seaservices earlier in the year after the routes from Dublinto Birkenhead and Heysham were not making a profit. The company had only entered the Irish market in 2009. Another vessel belonging to DFDS and operated on the same routes, Liverpool Seaways will now be deployed on the company’s network in the Baltic Sea. The third, a smaller ro-ro ship, will be deployed elsewhere on DFDS routes or be chartered-out.

Trucker cleared of transporting money
Mercedes-Benz tops HGV market again
A Wexford based haulier has ended a five-month nightmare after he was found not guilty of knowingly possessing €420,000 in his truck in an English court. Peter Angelo Doyle has endured a torrid time since his truck was searched at Fishguard on July 25th, 2010 and customs found a bag containing €420,000 in the back of the lorry. The 46-year-old was brought in for questioning and was subsequently placed in a Swansea prison for two weeks, despite claiming his innocence. His sister Tilly, who is based in London posted bail under the terms that Doyle would surrender his passport and driving licence to Police, while he also had to sign on at a local police station twice daily, meaning that he could not work. However, his ordeal was finally over when he was handed back his licence and passport after being found not guilty at a court hearing in late January much to his relief. “I could have had work, I had different options, but they refused to consider changing my bail conditions twice,” said Doyle. “I was sitting in my sister’s flat for the past five months doing nothing. The killing part was that I had work to go to if I wanted.”
Mercedes-Benz has once again proven to be the choice of HGV among Irish hauliers as for the second year running it is the most popular truck on the road. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry released figures showing that Mercedes-Benz truck sales equalled 15.8 per cent of the market share, which was the largest proportion. The German truck manufacturer was ahead of DAF (14.4%) and Volvo (11.6%) in the list as the Actros, Axor and Atego sold well for Mercedes. The amount of heavy commercials sold in Irelandlast year was 1,020 units, which was down 11.4% from the previous year.
North’s road scheme backed by FTA The Freight Transport Association is pleased to hear that the DRD and Northern Ireland Executive are to address the problems within the country’s vital trade routes. The Department for Regional Development (DRD) recently published a consultation stating that funds will be made available for road improvements. FTA members have been urging the government to carry out much needed upgrading work on the A8 Belfast to Larne Port that carries many trucks on a daily basis. Tom Wilson, FTA's Head of Policy for Northern Ireland said: "DRD and the Northern Ireland Executive must give priority to those schemes that will encourage inward investment and improve traffic flows."
Hauliers wanted in Canada Anyone flirting with the idea of emigration and has a HGV licence should consider moving to Canada as a company in the country is currently recruiting truck drivers. Clarke Road Transport INC is based in Nova Scotia eastern Canada and is seeking qualified professional drivers for employment and the haulage firm is willing to sponsor successful candidates. Drivers would need to have experience in chaining and covering loads as most of the work would involve flatbeds and the company already employs a number of European drivers that started a new life in the area. If anyone is interested they should contact Commonwealth Immigration, which is a U.K based immigration consultancy firm and has a Canadian government-authorised immigration partner in Canada. Mercedes Benz are the choice of HGV among Irish hauliers
Hauliers concerned over DFDS withdrawal Hauliers are voicing their concerns over escalating prices that may be brought in following DFDS’ sale of its Irish Searoutes to Stena Line, which is being investigated by the Irish Competition Authority (ICA). DFDS have sold their routes from Dublin to Birkenhead and Heysham to Stena Line and many hauliers have admitted that they are concerned to see Stena have such a monopoly in the market. One industry observer said: “Stena Line, which is already dominant in shipping passengers, will increase market share instantly. A spokesman for Stena Line said there would still be enough operators on the Irish Sea to ensure that prices would still be governed by market forces.
NRA head for courts The National Roads Authority is bringing the company that operates the toll road on the M1 motorway to court over claims of over charging. Celtic Roads Group (Dundalk) is alleged to be over charging motorists on the M1 to the tune of €1.39m per annum according to the NRA, a claim that the group strenuously deny. The court was told there was no mechanism to repay motorists who had been overcharged. And it was told that this case has implications for toll roads all over the country. The NRA says tolls on the M1 motorway ought to have been reduced on 1 January this year from €1.90 for a car to €1.80 but it says the company has not done this. Mr Justice Peter Kelly admitted the case to the Commercial Courtlist and said he would hear the action on February 22. He said it should be determined as quickly as possible as if motorists are paying an unlawful amount, they can never be reimbursed. The NRA said earlier this month that four other tolling operators were also required to lower their tolls - the companies operating the M4 toll road, the M6 toll road, the M8 toll road and the N25 toll road.

Container rates drop
Irish exporters display confidence in 2011 A report by Grant Thornton International Business has revealed that Irish exporters are among the most optimistic in the world when it comes to this year’s prospects. Thirty countries across the world were surveyed and Ireland were up there with the most optimistic for 2010, while they also expected a further decrease in unemployment this year. In addition, it finds that three quarters of all Irish companies expect to increase or maintain profitability this year. Partner in Grant Thornton, Pat Burke said that, while this level of optimism is well placed, Irish businesses are less hopeful about the nation's prospects overall.
Hauliers urged to negotiate
Container rates may fall for the rest of the year
Speculation is growing that container rates may ease for the remainder of the year; despite shipping lines declaring that 2011 may be a good period for the industry. The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index revealed that rates on services from Shanghaito Europeslipped by US$39 to reach $1,342 per teu on 14 January, compared with 7 January, while rates to the Mediterraneanfell by $21 to $1,212 per teu. Broker Freight Investor Services said: “Uncertainty over how firm rates will be in the short term, with carrier rate increases failing on both Europe and US routes and doubt over their ability to resist chasing marketshare later in the year as new tonnage comes on stream, is fuelling speculation that rates will be soft for most of the year. “All depends on the ability of carriers to manage their capacity to ensure that the market remains stable. “There is the possibility, however, that an under- then over-correction of supply [the number of vessels in active operation] by carriers – all waiting to be the last one to blink in a market with a delicate supply demand balance – may drive greater volatility.”
The Irish Road Haulage Association has urged its members to discuss introducing a diesel surcharge with its customers amid fears of spiralling fuel costs. The escalating cost of fuel has left many hauliers struggling to survive and IRHA president Vincent Caulfield believes that its members should discuss the matter with their customers. “We are hopeful that consignors can be brought to understand the financial pressures that existing arrangements are placing upon licensed hauliers and the necessity to introduce a diesel surcharge to maintain existing levels of service,” IRHA president Vincent Caulfield said. “These continued increases in fuel costs are unsustainable for our industry. Our members have had enough and they are clear on the only solutions available to them to protect their businesses and the service that they provide to customers.”
Learner drivers overcharged The Road Safety Authority is set to refund thousands of learner drivers that were overcharged for their driving test. The mistake came to prominence after the RSA charged learner drivers an increased fee of €85 a number of days early. The driver theory test was also put up €5 ahead of schedule and now the RSA must pay out €29,000 to people over the coming days. The mistake was blamed on an administrative error. A spokesman said: "As a result the RSA will, with immediate effect, refund the increased fee portion of the driving test to all driving test candidates who booked a test between January 25 and January 31.
Company insolvency almost reaches 100-mark for January Figures from InsolvencyJournal.ie show that 96 companies went closed down during the month of January, which in fact is a 13% drop from the same period last year. Once again, the construction industry leads the way as numerous companies were forced to close down and this has had a knock on effect in the haulage industry, many of who relied heavily on the building trade to make a living. Of the 96 companies gone out of business, a quarter of them were construction related and this was closely followed by the manufacturing industry, although there are a fewer companies in this sector gone compared to the same month in 2010. Higher costs are believed to be one of the main reasons for so many companies going out of business, as a rise in oil prices and other commodities have forced retailers to put their prices up.

RSA warns political parties over poster use on roadways With a General Election underway, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising political parties and their campaign workers of the need to take care when positioning campaign posters. Specifically, the RSA has advised that election posters should not be placed in a way which obscures road signs, particularly those that relate to the Rules of the Road and road user safety. These would include speed limit, traffic lights junction, warning and road works signs as well as those giving directions. “The signage on our roads, whether put there by the National Roads Authority, Local Authorities, the Gardaí or construction and road repair teams, are there to ensure the safety of motorists and all road users,” explained Noel Brett, Chief Executive, RSA. “So it is vital that no action is taken that either obscures signage / traffic lights, or distracts road users. Particular care should be taken to ensure that all posters are securely fastened so as to avoid hitting cyclists, pedestrians or vehicles.” It is an offence to erect any sign or notice that makes a traffic sign less visible to road users (Road Traffic Act 1961, Section 95, Subsection 14) (14) A person shall not provide any such sign, device, notice or light as is not a traffic sign if, on provision thereof, it is visible from a public road and— (a) it is capable of being confused with a traffic sign, (b) it makes a traffic sign provided in accordance with this section less visible to road users, or (c) it obstructs the view of public road users so as to render the road dangerous to them. Local Authorities are also advised that under the ‘Traffic Signs Manual’ issued by the Department of Transport that action should be taken to deal with obstructions that impede the clear visibility of traffic signs. Any member of the public who is concerned about dangerous or inappropriately positioned election posters should contact their Local Authority directly. Concluding Mr. Brett also asked election candidates to ensure that “all campaign workers are made aware of the dangers of working at the road side and not to place themselves or others at risk when erecting posters. It would certainly be very helpful if such workers took the practical step of wearing high-visibility jackets when doing so.
Funds allocated to regional and local roads Minister for Transport Pat Carey recently announced details of the €375 million investment programme for the regional and local roads network for 2011. Most of the funding will go on repair work to the local roads that were badly damaged during the bad weather and Carey revealed that the Restoration Improvement Programme plan would be re-introduced. “This year’s allocation of €375 million will bring the total Exchequer investment since 1997 for the restoration and upgrading of regional and local roads by way of grants to almost €6.4 billion. This year I am reintroducing the Restoration Improvement Programme to refocus priority investment under this programme to areas that most need it. A total of €150 million is being provided to local authorities under this grant category. Local authorities will also be provided with flexibility to change their programmes if necessary given the recent period of severe weather. I have also introduced a Winter Maintenance Grant category which local authorities may use for treating roads during periods of cold weather. “The Minister added: “These grants, which supplement expenditure by local authorities from their own resources, represent a very significant investment at a time when public finances are under severe pressure. These roads serve an important economic role and have valuable social and community functions. 94% of all our roads are regional or local – they carry about 54% of all traffic. It is, therefore, imperative that we maintain and, where necessary, improve the network.” EU375 million investment programme for regional and local roads

Pollution tax edges closer Changes to the controversial Eurovignette directive were discussed by the European’s Transport and Tourism Committee as a pollution tax among hauliers’ edges closer to being a reality for eleven countries including Ireland. European hauliers are on the brink of paying additional road tolls for air and noise pollution, which would be just an added over headed for the already struggling haulage industry. European Parliament Rapporteur Said El Khadraoui said: “After two years of waiting, it is finally good news that member states have issued a common position, albeit with a narrow majority. Now we have four or five months to see whether we can achieve a Second Reading consensus and avoid conciliation.” Alexander Sakkers, of the International Road Transport Union (IRU), branded the proposal “unacceptable” and said ministers had ignored all the taxes, charges and duties already paid by the road freight industry. At least two years are expected to pass before the new Eurovignette is implemented. The amendments will initially only affect the 11 EU member states that apply tolls: Portugal, Spain, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Greece, with Poland and Hungary expected to join the scheme later.

An efficient service When businesses need a parcel or product delivered, they want the job done promptly and efficiently by a professional service partner that prides itself in having the coverage and flexibility to complete a task on time.
T
here are a number of courier and next day delivery services out there and the options are extensive, but if a customer wants peace of mind in knowing that their product will arrive safely and on time to its destination, then they need look no further than NPX (Nationwide Parcel Express). Based in the Ballymount Business Park, Dublin, this Irish owned courier and parcel delivery company has developed a reputation for providing the highest level of service possible in a market dominated by international distribution groups. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile NPX and speak to managing director Brian Murphy about the success of the company since its inception in 2005. Brian along with directors (Michael Brennan, Alan Murphy, Maura Solan, Pat Butler) and staff have worked
incredibly hard to get the business to the level of service that they are currently at and are even more determined to maintain these high standards. “We are committed to providing our customers with the highest level of courier and parcel delivery service. Our nationwide network is backed by the latest proven technology, allowing you to both track your parcels individually and to view the overall service level reporting for your
consignments. We are currently exceeding 99% on-time deliveries. said Brian. Using the most up-to-date technology to maximise their services full potential, NPX provide their large customer base with the necessary tools to ensure that they always know where their goods are. “Everything is recorded in our database from the moment it arrives here until it is delivered to the customer.

“This database is supported by a high speed VPN (virtual private network) that spans all of our branches. This network allows all users to operate as if they were in the same building on the same network. Through the use of portals this network can be expanded to anywhere internet is accessible. “All our drivers have hand held trackers and the parcels are tracked every step of the way. The parcels are scanned as soon as they are collected and then the customer can log on and see where their product is and it saves them the hassle of having to ring up and see where it is.” Starting off any business means a lot of hard work and basically selling the service that you are providing and Brian revealed that getting NPX up and running was no easy task. “In hindsight, we probably underestimated how big a job it would be to get the company started. We had to go out and build a brand and explain to the customers what we had to offer.” “We then had to build a level of trust amongst our customers and, to be honest, it probably took 18 months to
two years to get the business running the way we wanted it too.” These days the NPX vans can be seen anywhere on the roads in Ireland and with 30 employees on the books, and a further 90 owner drivers Brian feels that as a team they work well together. “There is a very low turnover of staff here and we also have a number of owner drivers on the books. Everyone is properly trained and all carry out their duties to the highest standard. It is important to have a loyal staff and fortunately for us that is something that we have. Brian admitted that 2010 had been an uneasy year, but stressed that they continued to provide the same level of service and he hopes that it's a case of onwards and upwards from here on. “Last year was tough, as it was for so many businesses around the country, but I believe we handled it well and the fact that we maintained the volumes that we had been handling the previous year suggests that we were doing the right things. “This is a very competitive business and there is always pressure, but we know that we are providing a top quality service that our customers are
happy with, and once we can continue to do so and improve on any area that we can, then there should be no major problems. “The main aim is to keep focusing on customer satisfaction and give each of our customers the attention needed. The majority of our customers have been with us for a number of years now and have stayed loyal and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank them for that.” Through their network of contacts the company can deliver parcels throughout Ireland, the U.K. and globally. Every year the business is expanding and so too is NPX's customer base. They have become a breath of fresh air in an industry where any wrong move can prove detrimental to a customer's good name. “We are very aware that we are the final link in our customers' sales process and we take that responsibility very seriously, both to protect our customer's reputation as well as our own,” commented Brian. They know what the customer wants and needs, so they continue to listen and adapt while striving to deliver on all fronts.

Some of these have been with the company for many years. Between both bases the company has built itself into the business it is today and it has been in no small way down to the driving-force that is Gerard Cogan. Despite these turbulent times, Western Casing Ltd. has been doing their utmost to buck the trend and keep their trade strong and thriving heading into 2011. It hasn’t been easy,
according to Gerard. “Business is tough at the moment,” he admitted, “as it is for every business, but I am confident we can continue to offer our customers a competitive and reliable service going forward.” That’s exactly what Western Casing Ltd. is doing at present; riding out the storm and ensuring that they’re ready for a bright horizon when it does eventually arrive. It’s not the first recession that the company have experienced, and it will hardly be the last given that Gerard and Mary now have three sons involved in what can
be described today as a family business. “We’re one of the oldest transport companies in the west of Ireland. We’re on the go now for 30 years. When I started out in 1980 it was with just one lorry. It was an AEC which cost 4,000 pounds back when money was hard to come by. That was a tipper truck and a few years later we moved on to arctics. We spent ten years at that and then we diversified into the business that we’re currently in.”

his is a motto that has stood them well and the fact that they are still operating into their sixth decade proves that they have followed the right path. The longevity of the Dundalk based business speaks volumes of the type of service that this main Volkswagen dealer has been supplying to its large customer base. dealer for Skoda Situated in the Dundalk Retail Park just off the M1 means that Gerry Cumiskey Ltd is ideally located and their spacious showrooms offers a friendly atmosphere that helps the customer feel at ease, while the staff ensure that any query will be dealt with promptly and professionally. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile Gerry Cumiskey Ltd and speak to Aftersales manager Philip Hanlon about the success of this long running business. Ten years after being established,
Gerry Cumiskey Ltd became main dealers for Volkswagen and Mazda in the north east, although the latter has since being dropped and today the business is renowned for selling the Volkswagen brand to a large customer base. Behind the scenes from reception, to administration, to the Parts department and Service department, the company has assembled a strong, friendly and efficient staff right out of the very top drawer. Customer loyalty, though, has made things easier with many people remaining faithful to the company. The increase in sales staff also suggests the company's growth. These days Gerry's son Brendan runs the business as Dealer Principal and there is a staff of 25 all of who are highly trained in their own field of expertise. Philip has been with the company for the past year and a half and he revealed that his role entails looking after the many customers on their books. “Gerry Cumiskey Ltd prides itself on having a strong Aftersales service and it is up to me to ensure that the customers are satisfied with their vehicles. Retention is the key and on that front we do very well as many of our customers would be with us many years,” said Philip. “We strive to meet the customers' demands and we contact them when their vehicle is due a service and do things like that which are appreciated by the customers. As well as being main dealers for Volkswagen, we have the sole franchise for Audi and Skoda parts in the north east and this means that we supply all the dealers in the surrounding counties with their parts.” Volkswagen's legendary reliability, the depth of the range, whole life costs and strong residual value are just a few of the marque's strongest selling points, according to Philip. quality service at a competitive price. “We’ve been in business since 1994 and in that time we’ve earned a reputation for being one of the leading transport companies around,” McCabe Transport director Christopher McCabe proudly states. “We’ve grown year-on-year and now have a fleet of 14 trucks and 25 trailers. We are constantly adapting to the many changes in the industry and this has enabled us to attract new customers, as well as retaining our existing ones. The fact that we get a lot of repeat business would suggest that we must be doing something right!” Christopher runs McCabe Transport along with his nephew Thomas, whose late father Danny was involved in the business in its formative years. The company services the 32 counties of Ireland, the UK and Europe from Dublin Port where it has always been located. McCabe Transport runs up to five trucks a week to the UK and services Belgium, France, Germany,
Holland, Italy, Switzerland and Poland on a weekly basis. It also transports to Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, Romania and Spain. “Our location in Dublin Port is one of our big selling points. We are ideally situated to service Ireland and Europe cost effectively. It gives us a vital edge over many of our competitors,” Christopher says. “At the moment, Germany and Poland are our busiest routes outside Ireland and the UK. We have a few trucks servicing both of those countries on a frequent basis.” Throughput at Dublin Port has doubled over the past 10 years, making it one of the fasting growing ports in the world. This growth has been delivered across the board in both Lift-on/Lift-off (Lo-Lo) and Rollon/Roll-off (Ro-Ro). There has also been significant growth in the number of passengers passing through the port with last Christmas being one of the busiest on record due partly to the

disruption caused to flights by the severe weather. Having started out with a single rigid truck specialising in groupage, Christopher now oversees a 14-strong fleet of articulated trucks specialising in container, low-loader and continental work. He explains: “During the construction boom, container work accounted for about 85 per cent of our business, but that figure has since dropped back to about 50 per cent. UK and European work now accounts for about 40 per cent of our business with odd jobs accounting for the remaining 10 per cent.” McCabe Transport employs 15 staff, many of who are experienced drivers. The company’s modern fleet consists of Volvo, Scania and DAF, while the majority of its trailers are Dennison. All vehicles are fitted with a high tech

across Ireland, the UK and Europe. So deliveries can be traced with the touch of a button,” the affable Dubliner explains. Christopher has never seen anything like the recession the industry is currently experiencing and has called for greater unity between members of the Irish Road Haulage Association. “We need to pull together and stop undercutting each other. It’s become so cutthroat out there that you could lose a job for the sake of EUR10. We’re two-and-a-half years into this
recession and I would say the last six months have been the most difficult. The biggest problem is cash flow or lack of it. “I don’t think things can get much worse than they are now so the only way is up. We have to think positive. There is light at the end of the tunnel when you consider that exports are up in this country. That has been very noticeable in our line of business. Up until a few years ago, we were mainly dealing with imports, but now it’s the opposite to that.”
Christopher concludes by paying tribute to his drivers: “They have played a big part in the growth of our company over the past 17 years. Our drivers know the roads of Ireland and Europe inside out and can always be relied upon to do a good job.” For more information about McCabe Transport, telephone 01 855 9330, email info@mccabetransport.com or why not drop into Christopher, Thomas or any of the team at 83 North William Street, North Strand, Dublin 1.

aurence Cunningham Haulage is a family business established in 1995 and based in Newcastle, Co Down. It specialises in road haulage across Ireland and commercial vehicle repairs in Belfast. A keen emphasis is placed on providing a first-class service to all customers and Laurence Cunningham Haulage boasts contracts with some of the largest names in delivery and retail. They are equipped to carry frozen, chilled and ambient goods – full or part loads - and are also experienced in transporting and escorting abnormal loads (including large aircraft components). Any kind of trailer can be provided, even at short notice. Over the years, Laurence Cunningham Haulage has built up a reputation as a bitumen specialist and holds contracts with the major suppliers in Ireland, including Tennants Bitumen , Atlantic Bitumen and ICB emulsions. Furthermore, if you operate your own fleet of commercial vehicles in Belfast or the surrounding County Down / Antrim catchment area, Laurence Cunningham Haulage can handle your servicing and repair needs, specialising in HGVs and trailers. In brief, Laurence Cunningham Haulage offers the following services: road haulage; curtainside trailers; refrigerated vehicles; abnormal load haulage; escort vehicles for large loads; driver hire; commercial vehicle repairs; fleet maintenance. Essentially, it’s a one-stop shop for all your haulage and servicing requirements. Haulage is provided to or from anywhere in Ireland. Many customers have been with the company for over ten years and references can be provided upon request. Having built an enviable reputation in road haulage, it made perfect sense to start a commercial vehicle repairs division. At the modern Laurence Cunningham garage in Ballyclare,
IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
County Antrim, a team of fully-trained mechanics can service and repair any commercial vehicles and / or trailers. They also carry out PSVs and are pleased to offer maintenance contracts for trailers and tankers. All these services are provided at competitive rates. Gordon Walker has been general manager of Laurence Cunningham Haulage for the past four years. He notes: “Laurence established the business 16 years ago, he still keeps a keen eye on what is going on while leaving the day to day running of the business to myself and transport manager Danny Caldwell who has served over 35 years in this industry. The company started off in 1995 drawing raw bitumen from the Tennants terminal in Belfast, which is all tanker work. We basically take the bitumen to the quarries, where it is used to make tarmac. Drawing bitumen around the north of Ireland is still a big part of our work, but we have diversified into a number of other areas as well. “One of our major contracts is that we, working with MF Logistics, supply vehicles and drivers to Bombardier Aerospace in Belfast, handling all of their transport needs. We have 19 drivers tied up in that and 16 vehicles, looking after Bombardier’s internal transport solutions.” All told, Gordon and Danny oversee a fleet of 40 commercial vehicles and up to 80 trailers / tankers. They tend to lean towards Volvo, as the general manager confirms: “We have tried the others but our experience is that Volvo is best. We have a very good working relationship with Dennison Commercials in Ballyclare and the service we get from them is excellent. Our fleet is made up predominantly of Volvo and we find them very reliable and economical and they also have a good re-sale value, which is important.”
39
Regarding the commercial repairs, Gordon continues: “We’ve had the workshop set up in Ballyclare for a few years now and we have two full-time mechanics there doing repairs, servicing and testing. We set it up originally to look after our own needs, as we couldn’t find anyone to do the work at a reasonable rate and needed to reduce our maintenance bill. It has worked out well and we were soon able to take on quite a bit of outside work. We’ve upsized the garage and we have a number of contracts, including work with many people in the bitumen business.” Overall, business is going reasonably well: “We are going through the same problems and difficulties as every other haulier in the country. Rising fuel prices would be our biggest gripe. Fuel has continually risen over the past six-eight months and it’s putting the entire industry under huge pressure. “However, we have some very good contracts and on some of those the customers actually supply on their own fuel. At the moment, we’re getting good rates, mainly because we provide an exceptional service.” The fleet looks fantastic As for the future, the general manager concludes: “It’s difficult to say. The bitumen sector has slowed down slightly over the last year but we are hoping for an upturn later in the year mainly due to the conditions of the roads after the last 2 severe winters. We have been successful in picking up new contracts in foodstuffs and refrigerated work. We’re diversifying and broadening our service to keep things ticking over.” Laurence Cunningham Haulage Telephone: 028 4344 3532 (9am - 5pm Monday to Friday) Fax: 028 43725288 Email: info@ laurencecunninghamhaulage.co.uk http://laurencecunningham-haulage.co.uk

By combining outstanding equipment and excellent staff, Hall Transport guarantees customer satisfaction
Hall of fame For over 13 years, Hall Transport has carved out a stellar reputation as one of the premier haulage companies in the midlands. Irish Trucker traveled to the Longford headquarters and caught up with founding managing director Norman Hall to get an insight into this exceptional operation. 42

H
all Transport is one of those superb haulage companies that leaves absolutely nothing to chance. Proprietor Norman Hall oversees a strong fleet and dedicated staff, with the emphasis always on quality, safety and value. Every job is treated with the utmost respect and each customer is afforded a personal touch throughout the process. This results in satisfied customers every time and that’s why Hall Transport benefits from a large volume of repeat custom. By holding down a number of long-term contracts, Norman is in with a good fighting chance of riding the economic storm currently wreaking havoc with the transport industry in Ireland. Located at Cornadrung, Aughnacliffe, Co Longford, Hall Transport was established in 1997 by Norman and his dad Joseph. From there, Norman decided to expand the company with great success. Hall Transport specialises particularly in two distinct areas – timber haulage and milk – but possesses the ability and Proprietor Norman Hall operates an impressive fleet

wherewithal to carry out any kind of haulage if and when the need arises. The Hall Transport fleet comprises 18 trucks and 17 timber trailers. In terms of tractor units, Norman finds Volvo to be the most reliable and as such Volvo makes up the majority of his fleet. Two DAFs and one Scania complete his hand. He employs a team of 18, which is vital in a rural community amid the most frightening economic downturn in living memory. By creating local employment, haulage firms provide their localities with a real boost, one worthy of support from the Government. What a shame the powers-that-be seem intent on punishing the sector with endless fuel price increases rather than doing something to protect and sustain it! Hall Transport provides a nationwide service, available to every nook and cranny of the country from Galway to Wicklow and Waterford to Donegal. The timber work basically entails hauling logs from the forests to furniture manufacturing companies. Two of Hall’s biggest clients are Galway-based: Murray’s Timber Products in Ballygar and ECC in Connemara. Work is steady, but transport is vulnerable to bad weather and Norman – like many – endured a difficult Christmas period. As if things weren’t demanding enough, the bitter winter and hazardous driving conditions that prevailed for almost six weeks conspired to leave many routes unsafe. The founder notes: “Business in general is fairly good, thank God, but the weather disrupted us big time. In this line of work,
43

health and safety is paramount and the bottom line is that you can’t take a load out onto the road if conditions are treacherous. But that’s behind us now and we’re looking forward.” What does the future hold? The Irish transport industry is under pressure like never before – how does Hall Transport plan to meet the challenges that lie ahead? “We’ll roll up our sleeves and continue to provide a topquality service, but it’s very hard to know at the moment what the future holds. These are very uncertain times, so I really don’t know. You can’t take anything for granted anymore. Every day is a bonus. Before the bad weather hit, we had our fleet out on the road every day, and that’s what we’ll be aiming for again in 2011.” On a day-to-day basis, Norman handles most of his own maintenance work. He has his own mechanic to look after the general work but, when it comes to the bigger jobs like engines or gears, he has the work carried out at one of the main dealerships, usually McDonnell Commercials in Monaghan. Their floor manager Leslie Wylley is always there to help Norman and his business out at any time. Hall Transport is very much a family business, though the buck stops with
44
Norman, who is always on hand to deal with all queries and to keep customers informed on all developments. His wife Michelle is a physiotherapist but she helps Norman out a great deal. His sister Irene works in the office, while brother Robert and Dad Joseph helps out with repairs etc. However, it was Norman’s parents Joe and Mary who played the biggest part in the genesis of Hall
Transport. Joe was previously active in haulage and that was how Norman got involved, as he recalls: “My father had a milk lorry with Lakeland Dairies. He started off with milk cans back in 1968. When I came home from travelling in 1997 we started to expand the company from there. My father has taken a bit of a backseat since then. “Now, We have three or four lorries

ruck and light commercial sales have suffered greatly over the past 18 months or so and unfortunately some businesses have been forced to close their doors. In a time of recession money is tight, particularly when the banks are refusing to release funding to anyone, let alone a haulage company interested in upgrading its fleet. However, some dealerships are fighting back against the recession and one such business is the J&F Group, and sister company J&F Trucks which has been supplying a loyal and efficient service to a large IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Based on the main road in Mallusk, Co Antrim, the J&F Group is a family run business that is now synonymous with car, light commercial and trucks sales for almost 40 years. or everyone involved in the motor industry, and notwithstanding the introduction of the Government scrappage scheme a little over 12 months ago, the effects of the downturn have been keenly felt. However, nothing good comes without positive thinking, and the team at Mullingar Nissan – part of the Gilmore Group, headquartered in Kingscourt, Co Cavan and the owner of five outlets around the country – are riding the storm to good effect. Located in the state-of-the-art Lough IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
Sheever Corporate Park just outside Mullingar, the company’s ability to withstand the economic slowdown and flourish into the future was significantly bolstered by the addition of the Opel franchise in November 2010. Speaking to Irish Trucker recently, Dealer Principal Frank Hughes outlined the benefits to customers in the midlands of the addition of one of Ireland’s top-selling brands to the portfolio. “Slater Opel in Mullingar closed its doors in July so the franchise became
available at that stage, negotiations ensued and Opel Ireland awarded us a franchise,” he says. “It’s a huge feather in the cap. Opel is a very strong brand, with almost eight per cent market share, and it’s a strong addition to the franchise here along with Nissan. It’s good for the company but it’s good for the customers too – we’re the only Opel dealer in the midlands now. For a while customers might not have been sure about where to go for service, parts, warranty, but we answer all those needs now.
53
“There’s no Opel dealer in Longford, Roscommon, Laois, Offaly, Meath, so we’re servicing the whole of the midlands as a result. And we’ve hit the ground running – since the first day we opened as an Opel dealer it’s been very busy. We sold over 20 Opels for the New Year within a couple of weeks and the workshop has been busy with warranty, servicing and parts, so it’s been very positive.” With the Nissan and Opel combination making up approximately 14 per cent of the Irish market, and the Chevrolet and Ssanyong ranges also on offer at the company’s showrooms in Lough Sheever, Mullingar Nissan and Mullingar Opel is sure to have something to suit everyone’s tastes. “We offer the full passenger and commercial range in both Opel and Nissan and we’re looking forward to 2011,” says Frank. “As far as Opel are concerned, the new Meriva, with stateof-the-art design including gulf wing doors, has been a big success for them. The new Insignia is one of the top selling cars in its class, and the new generation Astra completes a beautiful range of cars with low emissions and low road tax as a result.” In the Nissan range, Frank admits that the mould-breaking Juke has been the subject of plenty of interest, both in the showroom and the pages of the auto press. “It’s an award-winning car – the Continental Irish Car of the Year 2011,” he says. “It has low emissions in both petrol and diesel, so it’s very competitive from a road tax point of
54
view, but apart from that it’s different from the norm, it’s funky, with a radical design. “Sometimes a lot of cars appear very similar and unless you look at the badge you don’t know what make they are. You can’t mistake the Nissan Juke for anything else. In the same way the Nissan Qashqai has been such a success, the Juke stands out on its own. Vibes and sales have been very positive so far for the Juke, so we’re looking forward to that one over the next while.” Given that Mullingar Nissan made the sizeable investment as recently as 2005 to move from its former base – it was previously based on the Dublin road trading as Atlas Cars – the company was always destined to feel the rigours of the credit crunch as much as anyone. Frank Hughes, however, is anxious to avoid any negative reflections. With
Frank Hughes, the Dealer Principal of Mullingar Nissan and Mullingar Opel, which also offers the Chevrolet and SsangYong ranges
a stunning portfolio of vehicles and a 1.6 acre base in Lough Sheever Corporate Park, one of the only motorparks in the country outside of the major cities, the company has a solid foundation from which to plot its course into the future. “It has been tough since 2005,” he says, “because whenever you invest a lot of money, whether it’s at good or bad times, it’s going to take time into the future before that can be recouped. “But you have to think positive. The scrappage has made a difference. With the Green Party in Government helping the motor industry might not have been seen as a number one priority but fortunately the Government introduced the scheme last year and they’ve continued that into 2011. The motor industry has been a major employer in Ireland over the years and remains an important part both of the fabric of local communities and the wider economy, and that needs to Mullingar Nissan and Mullingar continue. here are no frills about Crowley Transport. It’s just a straight-up, honest and hardworking haulage business. What you see is what you get. Practicality and integrity are core values that permeate every facet of the operation, overseen for the past two years by Alan Crowley, son of founder Gerry Crowley. Crowley Transport doesn’t pretend to be something its not. Instead, the emphasis is placed on getting the job done … on time … every time. From small humble beginnings, the company has grown in popularity down through the years, forging an unrivalled reputation for delivering optimal results. Crowley Transport is now regarded as one of the premier operators servicing the key corridor between Cork and Dublin. They also cover the greater Munster area and have some additional contracts in the midlands. Headquartered at Kildinan,
Rathcormack, County Cork, the company was established as Gerry Crowley Transport by the eponymous Gerry, who has been involved in transport for over 40 years. Alan Crowley assumed control of the family business in 2008 and the transition was seamless. Today, Crowley’s trademark dedication to excellence is as apparent as it’s ever been. It’s worth mentioning that a crew of some days are better than others.” By running a tight ship and providing ten drivers is employed by Crowley an excellent, punctual service to his Transport – a vital contribution to the clients, Alan is confident of weathering economy but one that is ignored by the storm. the powers that be when it comes to drawing up incentives or tax breaks. Crowley Transport has the sector are nothing short of scandalous, forcing more and more hauliers to the wall. The recent increase in fuel costs in the budget have placed the likes of Crowley Transport under increased pressure and the proprietor admits that the present state of the economy causes many sleepless nights: “Things are not easy, especially after the budget. We seem to get hammered over and over again. The The Crawley Transport fleet redy for action increase in fuel prices is going to cost us a massive amount of money per annum and that’s the kind of hike that is driving more and more lads out of business. We can’t increase our rates so it’s leaving us with very little room to manoeuvre. Since the start of the year, diesel has gone up by 18c per litre. The fleet is kept in top condition and all the drivers are fully trained and operate in accordance with all national and international legislation. Looking to the future, Alan admits that a period of consolidation is on the cards. Companies that get through the lean period should come out the other end stronger than every before and there’s every chance that Crowley Transport – as a well-known and established operator - will be one such firm: “We’d like to keep it going. It’s very difficult to know what’s around the corner in the current climate because things seem to change on a daily basis, but we have always provided a top-class service and we will continue to do so. Of course, you’d like to expand and take on new contracts, but we’ll probably have to settle for rolling up the sleeves and consolidating first. We’ll just do what we do best – we’ll continue to provide a quality service to our existing customers and we’ll keep our eyes open for new opportunities.”

them is less than that of the other trucks we have.” In his 37 years in the business, Gerry has never seen anything like the recession the industry is currently experiencing. The huge hike in fuel costs has also forced him to introduce a fuel surcharge. “The industry is really struggling at the moment – I have never seen it so bad. The recession is hitting everyone in business hard, including hauliers. I think it will take at least five years for Ireland to get out of this downturn. The one encouraging sign is that exports are doing well. It provides some hope for the future.” He continues: “With fuel costs at a record high, we’re having to operate a fuel surcharge. The price of diesel has left margins very tight so we have had no option but to introduce this. Our surcharge rates are running at around five or six per cent at the moment. It’s something we are constantly reviewing.” Gerry concludes by paying tribute to his drivers: “They have played a huge part in the growth and success of our company over the years. range of services including car, van, 4x4 and truck hire through Newbridge Car & Van Rental Limited, which was set up by Ray in 1986. This company has for over three decades been supplying vehicles on short and long term contracts (from one day up to five years!) to businesses, the general public, semi-state bodies and local authorities, with great success due to much appreciated repeat business. Auto Fleet Service Centre has also enjoyed tremendous success since its genesis, carrying out professional maintenance and repair of vehicles. This company performs mechanical and electrical maintenance for some of the largest fleet companies in Ireland. AFSC. also holds a service contract with Leaseplan Fleet Management and is the only authorized AAapproved repair workshop facility in County Kildare. Auto Fleet’s stateof-the-art workshop offers a customerfriendly and efficient service. equipment to ensure that vehicles are maintained to manufacturer’s recommendations. Services on offer include: maintenance and repair of all makes, models and age of vehicles; Saturday servicing; free Vehicle Health Check (VHC); free collection and delivery of cars booked in for service work; free crash estimates; and damaged vehicle recovery. Credit terms are available. AFSC’s fully-equipped Accident Repair Centre is amongst the most advanced in the country, featuring the latest computerised realignment jig system as well as a low-bake oven. A team of highly-trained technicians and panel beaters specialises in all aspects of body repair, which is conducted in line with manufacturer recommendations. Founder Ray takes the story up: “There are 175 vehicles in the fleet at Newbridge Car & Van Rental Ltd. and we are extremely versatile in the services we provide. We have found that people can no longer afford to buy replacement vans – 82% of what we’ve submitted for finance recently has been declined – so we’ve started

up a Rent To Buy system, where customers can rent for a period of time with a view to buying. A concession is taken off the cost price, considering the prior expenditure on rental. This is a special, unique arrangement and it’s proving very popular. “There is still a great spirit to work out there, even though the recession has hit a lot of people hard. We find that there are a lot of sole traders and small-to-medium-sized operators who are doing their level best to provide a good service and we are here to support them. We are getting better value than ever before from our suppliers and we are passing that on to the customer.” The Group received a huge boost when Auto Fleet Service Centre was successful in acquiring the An Garda Siochana contract for recovery and management of all vehicles in County Kildare. On the back of this, six employees – including a Transport Manager - have been taken on in the past three months. Under the terms of the contract, AFSC is on hand 24 hours a day to collect vehicles and store them in the Garda compound until they are due for release. Rigorous regulation is required and only the most reputable companies will even be considered for such a prestigious partnership. A haulage licence has been acquired and the latest IT system is deployed for the recovery/storage/release phases, as well as a state-of-the-art forensics facility. Thus, by totally reinventing itself, the Ray O’Brien Group has managed to not just weather the economic storm but to move forward in difficult times. Peter Kennedy, who boasts over 30 years’ experience, has come on board as service director / business development and the twelve-ramp workshop is busy at all times. Late last year, AFSC received AA authorisation to carry our 101-point checks on vehicles. It is the only company in
70
Kildare to hold this authorisation. A new tenant has been secured, specialising in body repairs for all the major insurers. CCI are also on site, importing cars. Ray O’Brien has been in business since 1965 and his son Colin is current General Manager. Other key personnel on hand to facilitate the hard-working drivers of Kildare and beyond include the aforementioned Peter Kennedy, Gerry Quirke (who
spearheads van rentals), Ann-Marie Norton (administration), recovery administrator Sean O’Connor, fullycertified Transport Manager Donal Callaghan and workshop foreman Bob Taggart. Frustrated that the Government continues to treat motor vehicles as a luxury, and thereby taxes prospective buyers and sellers out of the market, Ray is happy with his new niche in rentals and maintenance. He still offers some vehicles from his fleet for sale but is adamant that sales, for the time being at least, are not the way forward. As for the future, he concludes: “It’s going to be tight. The banks still haven’t opened their doors and people will continue to struggle. We have reduced prices for short-term and long-term rentals and we won’t be closing our door to anybody. We’re here to provide a service and we believe the Rent To Buy On call for aroundthe-clock recovery scheme will remain very popular. The entire fleet is kept in “We also have a truck immaculate condition stop in the pipeline and we’re also hoping to put up a wind turbine and we also intend to soon offer some electric vehicles for sale, which we will charge off our own turbine. I’m really into electric vehicles – they are cheaper, clearer, safer and more efficient – I believe that’s where the future of motoring lies.”

Chilled and frozen goods are distribution by the company
Morgan McLernon continue to impress The success of any business can be gauged by the length of time that it has been operating and to that end Armagh based haulage firm Morgan McLernon are one of the leaders in its field of expertise. 72

organ McLernon are now entering its 45th year in business, which is an amazing statistic, given the current climate that we are currently experiencing and more importantly the fact that the haulage industry has been at the brunt of a number of setbacks over the past couple of years. Many haulage firms have unfortunately been forced to switch off their engines as the recession has become too much for them, but the phrase the 'strongest survive' could be attributed to Morgan McLernon, whose experience has seen them through this difficult period for the industry. For any company to enter its fifth decade in business is a monumental achievement for all involved and one that deserves to be recognised on a national level. There have been many changes in the haulage industry over the years and Morgan McLernon's ability to move with the times has

ensured that this company has continued to be successful. Transport manager and family member Claire Morgan speaks to Irish Trucker about the success of the business, while she points to the policies they follow to ensure customer satisfaction. Claire's grandfather Michael Morgan established the business many years ago. The business was continued by his family. Claire's father John retains the role of director along with his nephews Michael McLernon and Darryl Morgan. Claire attended University of Ulster, Jordanstown where she obtained her degree in Accountancy. It has been her ambition to work in the family firm and so after joining the business a few years back she now helps look after the day to day running of the company along with her brother James. Specialising in the transportation of refrigerated goods to and from Ireland all over Europe and with over 40 years experience behind them, they have built up a massive customer base. From their base in Kilmore, Co Armagh, Morgan McLernon have an extensive fleet of 94 trucks and 150 trailers, which allows them to perform multiple jobs at any given time. Transporting ambient, fresh or frozen foods means that the trailers are specially equipped to carry such goods with many being dual temperature. “Currently all our trucks are Scania as that is the preferred choice and we have a good business relationship with Road Trucks Ltd in Larne, Granco Trucks Newry. We also have contacted hire vehicles from Centurion Truck Rental to keep up with the demand for business,” said Claire. While all our refrigerated trailers come from Montracon and Gray & Adams. “We also have a selection of curtain side trailers, some of which are fixed roof but all are built to euro-liner specification and can be used to transport goods.” Of course maintaining the fleet is imperative and to this end, Claire revealed that no stone is left unturned in the quest to ensure that everything runs properly. “All the vehicles and trailers are serviced regularly and the fleet is

kept relatively new, generally under three years old and this helps to avoid any unnecessary downtime, which as everyone knows is something that all hauliers strive to avoid. There are over 220 people employed by Morgan McLernon, all of who are highly trained, while many have been with the firm for many years now. “There is a low turnover of staff here and a lot would be with the company
for many years. All are more than capable of performing their daily duties, which makes our job that bit more easier.” Like all businesses, Morgan McLernon place a huge emphasis on customer satisfaction and the fact their client list includes some of the biggest retail giants in Ireland and the UK. “We have a large customer base that includes all the major supermarkets.
We would also be also involved in the transportation of mushrooms and work for the main producers in the northern/southern counties. The main base is in Kilmore, County Armagh as well as a base in the UK Midlands; our dedication to improving service has been made easier with the addition of this depot. Through their network of software and technology as well as the latest GPS hardware installed in all trucks and trailers to follow their goods at all times. “Customer satisfaction is key to the success of the business and we are on hand 24/7 to deal with any enquiries that the customer may have. Our aim is to make deliveries on time and ensure the products are in pristine condition. Through our many years of experience, we have learned the best way of doing this and it is our aim to continue providing a top level service.” Morgan McLernon can offer next day delivery ensuring that regardless of the load, the customer can be assured their orders will be delivered on time.

The quarry at Ballintobeenig has been ran by three generations of the O’Mahoney family
Digging for success The O'Mahoney family in Tralee, Co Kerry has quarrying in their blood and the fourth generation of the clan is now continuing a service that was first started in the early 1900's.

J O'Mahoney's great grandparents began operating a quarry at Ballintobeenig, Tralee over 100 years ago and the business has continued to operate throughout the generations with PJ now overseeing the day to day running of the business alongside his wife Caroline and his father John. During that period of time the company has developed a customer base that turns the competition green with envy. Government departments, well known building firms, civil engineering contractors and a host of valued customers in the agricultural and private sectors have all seen the benefit of the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

O'Mahoney's treatment. Specialising in the supply of sandstone, shale, pencil shale and Leith building stone and various other types of crushed stone the Kerry based firm has a customer base that covers a wide area. Quarrying is a very complex industry in that there are a wide variety of services that can be provided, but PJ revealed that these days; they concentrate mainly on the one area. “We would supply building stone all over the country. A lot of it is going to Wicklow at the moment and we sub that work out to Brennan Hauliers, while we do most of the work around here ourselves,” said PJ. The company's success has been built on producing high quality products at competitive prices. The company also 'delivers' extremely high levels of customer service to complete an all encompassing package. Like all other businesses, the quarry industry has many overheads and PJ revealed that diesel was one of their biggest expenditures during the course of the year. “Diesel is definitely one of the biggest bills of the year. Health and Safety is a major concern in the quarry industry and it is very important to meet the proper standards. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
“Insurance too have also risen dramatically over the past year and this has had an effect as well.” The success of the business was largely due to providing a reliable and efficient service to a large customer base. The company's success has been built on producing high quality products at competitive prices. O'Mahoney's also deliver extremely high levels of customer service to complete an all encompassing package. “I think things will even out, but not for another year or so. There has been a huge amount of building done over the past 15 years and I can't see it going back to the way it used to be.” Deploying the finest equipment available and a state-of-the-art, modern fleet in all aspects of its operation, the company got to where it
is today by placing a keen emphasis on quality at all times. This will continue as PJ and his staff strive to sustain their position at the front of the marketplace. “We have a large customer base and many of these would be repeat clients, who are happy with the service that we provide and if we can continue to do that, the company will continue to grow.” PJ admitted that there are many rules and regulations to be followed in the industry, which means plenty of paperwork to be properly completed. “Legislation is a very big area in this industry and all the necessary paperwork has to be completed properly. Health and Safety is a key issue also and in this respect, everything has to be in perfect working order.”

Looking forward A company's ability to move with the times is essential in the art of survival and especially in the vehicle retail trade, where any hesitancy could leave a business in their rivals' shadows.
T
Conway Motors are Citroen and Kia main dealers
o say it has been a topsy turvy few years for the motor trade would be an understatement, two years ago when the current economic recession kicked in, the industry took a fair battering and unfortunately some dealers were forced to close their doors for good. Sales is one of the toughest games to be in and even more so when money is not as plentiful as it was during the Celtic Tiger, but many of the longer established businesses survived and last year they experienced an upturn in fortunes. One such business is Edward Conway Motors which has been providing a top quality service to a large customer base since the early 1980's. The late Edward Conway established the business along with his late wife Threasa and initially they focused on supplying quality used parts to their customers, but soon a garage and second hand car sales were in operation also as the business began to grow. Over the years, the customer base grew as Edward's ethos of providing top quality vehicles at a reasonable price and providing a friendly service became well known not just at its base in Castlebar, but throughout Mayo and the surrounding counties. These days, Edward Conway Motors are main dealers for both Citroen and Kia and that high standard of service first introduced by Edward and Threasa is
continued to this day. Their son Padraic is the current Dealer Principal and he is ably assisted by Sales Manager Pat Neary, who is more than 20 years with the company. Pat speaks to Irish Trucker about the business and he tells us about the eventful few years that they are after having. In 2008, Edward Conway Motors moved premises for a third time and they currently reside in the Breaffy Road Retail Park, where they are located in a state of the art premises.
“The Citroen Berlingo is one of the most popular small vans” However, around the same time, business went quiet and Pat admits that it was worrying times for all involved. “Obviously, the decision to move had been taken long before the recession really kicked in,” said Pat. “It really was worrying times and we all had to pull together to make sure we got through it. Looking back I feel it was a great learning curve for many people here and we just had to get back to basics and work hard. “It was virtually impossible to get credit for people and basically the trade was dying on its feet. However, the introduction of the government's scrappage scheme last year really saw an upturn in
81
fortunes for us.” Pat admits that a turnaround of its kind has been unseen in the industry before, but he certainly is not complaining about their change in luck. “It was a timely boost and I have to say that 2010 was a great year for us and we are looking to continue that improvement well into 2011. There are a number of new vehicles coming out and we are looking to push them as much as possible. “It has been an incredible couple of years to say the least and I'm delighted that we have turned things around in such a short space of time.” The Citroen Berlingo is one of the most popular small vans and Pat admits that both it and the Kia model are popular brands amongst their customers. “We have been main dealers for Citroen for many years now and they have produced some very reliable vehicles, the Berlingo being one of them. In December 2009, we were appointed the main Kia dealer for Mayo and Sligo and we are delighted with how that has been going ever since.” Edward Conway Motors is not just a dealership as it also offers many other services such as after sales, parts and a workshop meaning it is a one-stop shop for its customers. “Our workshop would be very busy as we service quite a number of vehicles and we have a contract with An Post where we maintain up to 150 vans for them. “After sales are equally as important to us as sales and we ensure to follow up the customer and make sure they are happy with their purchase.” Of course customer satisfaction is Edward Conway Motors main focus and Pat feels that they are providing the right level of service given the large customer base they have.
“The introduction of the government's scrappage scheme last year really saw an upturn in fortunes for us.” “We have a very experienced staff here many of whom have been with us for years. They are all highly trained in their own areas and deal with any enquiries from customers in a friendly

ne such company is Decon Refrigerated Transport and for this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the Galway based firm and speak to managing director Derek Connolly about the success of the business since its inception in 2003. Derek has been involved in the haulage industry for many years and the business has evolved from his father working in the distribution of fruit for many years. However, eight years ago this year, Derek decided to establish his own business and has never looked back since, expanding the fleet and customer base on an annual basis. Decon Transport offered a specialised service to their customers and Derek admits that the success of the business is mainly down to the quality of service that they provide. “At Decon Transport, we specialise in overnight palletised temperature controlled distribution to the retail and food service trade from our distribution centre in Claregalway Corporate Park,” said Derek. “We can tailor our services to meet the customers' total distribution needs, direct from the end of their production line or port of entry to final delivery at their customers premises.” Some of the produce transported by the company includes fresh fruit and vegetables, pork and beef, delicatessen and dairy products as well as fresh flowers and ambient foods. “We have a large customer base that
