Woodside Group acquires leading International Freight Forwarder One of Northern Ireland’s most successful international freight forwarding companies has been acquired by leading haulage firm The Woodside Group. AllRoute Shipping Ltd, based in Belfast’s harbour estate, employs 20 people and will now be wholly owned by the Ballynure transport company. Mark Woodside, director of the Woodside Group, says the acquisition means the family business can now offer a broader portfolio of transport services and solutions to its growing customer base. “The Woodside Group embarked on a strategic development plan in 2008 and moving into international freight forwarding was an Mark Woodside integral part of that,” says Mr Woodside. “We are delighted that we were able to strike an attractive deal with AllRoute Shipping. It means the Woodside Group can expand its transport and logistics services to more sectors and throughout the world.” The Woodside Group says AllRoute Shipping, which has a current turnover of £6m, will continue to operate under its own management with existing managing director Carson McMullan but with input from the new owners. All jobs will be preserved. Woodside says plans to develop this branch of transport and distribution activity are well under way and they expect to see this turnover double in the next three to five years. “Our customers have welcomed this development as it means we can offer them a one-stop-shop for all their transport and logistics needs,” says Mr Woodside. Woodside Group, established in 1967, has a combined turnover of over £45 and employs 350 people. The group is involved in various logistics activities across Ireland, UK and Europe. This includes the transportation of dry freight from single pallets to full loads, warehousing and distribution. The fleet is also designed to provide specialist transportation services to the food, motor, bulk and tanker sectors.

Scrap trailer height proposals says FTA

Delivery van drivers are trusted to get their cargo from one destination to another, but in Pakistan they take trust to a new level. For it has been reported that the country’s nuclear weapons, which are capable of destroying cities are being transported by delivery vans. Not only is there a greater chance that the missiles could fall into the wrong hands, but the danger of one of them exploding is also increased. Instead of moving their deadly arsenal in welldefended armored convoys, Pakistan’s Special Plans Division (SPD) prefers to move it around in civilian-style vehicles virtually without security. Reports by US magazines, The Atlantic and The National Journal, warn this makes the deadly weapons of mass destruction more vulnerable to theft by Islamist militants.

The Freight Transport Association has called on the EU to abandon plans to limit the height of future European semi-trailers to just four metres. The FTA feels that if the plans were dropped, it would end uncertainty in the sector and the trade body has wrote a strongly worded letter to the EU. The Association said: “This proposal started life as one of those Brussels ideas that everybody assured us would go nowhere, but nine months later and there is still a piece of paper with ‘four meters’ written on it. “We have supplied countless briefings to the (UK) Department for Transport, supported academic research into the impacts and FTA’s Brussels office has been working overtime making MEPs and Commission officials aware of the efficiencies and carbon savings achieved in the UK through the use of ‘high-cube’ and double deck trailers. “Whilst we think double-deck trailers are safe we are now focused on getting the four meter limit for single decks removed. The best way we can see to do that is to kill the proposal.”

Ashgrove Transport trucks are a familiar sight on Irish roads

The trucker of Mooncoin Ashgrove Transport, which operates out of Mooncoin in Co. Kilkenny, has come a long way in its six years in business as its youthful managing director Peter Brennan explains. 26

t just 27 years of age, Peter Brennan is the driving force behind the successful Co. Kilkenny-based Ashgrove Transport (also known as Ashgrove International Transport), which offers a complete transport service. Founded six years ago by Peter in the village which lends its name to the famous song “The Rose of Mooncoin”, Ashgrove Transport specialises in everything from truck crane and low loader hire to 10-45 feet container transport, abnormal loads, international transport and general haulage. Peter clearly has an old head on his young shoulders and a strong business acumen to boot. The young entrepreneur’s willingness to succeed and sheer hard work has ensured that his fledgling company has gone from strength to strength in the face of one of the worst recessions on record. “I don’t think we would still be here if we hadn’t branched out from what we were originally doing,” says Peter. “The construction boom was probably at its height in 2005 and it was a good time to get into that line of work. But when the bubble burst, I had to look at other ways to generate business and decided to offer a complete service. You can’t rely on one type of work in the current climate. We like to think of ourselves as a one-stop shop for all your transport needs. No job is

too big or too small.” While Brennan comes from a farming background (his father was an agricultural contractor), the transition to life as a trucker has been a smooth one for him. “I always had an interest in machinery so driving trucks suited me down to the ground. After serving my time as a HGV mechanic with Rolor Commercials in Waterford, which is a main DAF dealer, I bought a Renault Magnum and haven’t looked back since,” he remembers. Peter now operates four trucks (two Volvo, one Mercedes and one Iveco) and employs five staff (three full-time and two part-time). He also has a fleet of 13 trailers, which range from curtain-siders and refrigerated to extendable and low trailers. He is grateful for the support he has and continues to receive from his partner Lynne, who is involved in the day-to-day running of the business. “We’re the only company in the South East to specialise in extendable loads, low loader hire and truck crane hire,” he proudly states. Despite the property crash, Ashgrove Transport continues to attract a lot of work from construction companies. One of the company’s best customers is BAM Contractors (formerly known as Ascon Contractors), which is one of Ireland’s leading civil engineering and building firms and was responsible for building many of the country’s new motorways. Ashgrove Transport has a longstanding contract with South Eastern Tyre Recycling in Waterford city with a daily waste tyre collection around the southwest, while the company also does a regular run to Europe for the Dawn Meats Group. “We have built up a good customer-base over the years and appreciate all the business we get, whether it’s big or small. We will price any job.” In its relatively short history, Ashgrove Transport has established a tradition of value-formoney, reliability and total dedication to customer service. Each of Peter’s drivers are highly skilled, competent, experienced and fully aware of the importance of customer service. The company

The real deal Wayne Doherty is a little bit different than most of the hauliers. He’s more sincere, more genuine, more authentic. The driving force behind Doherty Haulage Ltd. in Kilcullen, County Kildare boasts a true love of trucks and trucking – the kind of enthusiasm you can’t imitate. This is his passion and he can’t imagine ever doing anything else. It’s always a real pleasure to meet a man who eats, sleeps and breathes trucking.

or some, trucking is a way of making a living. For others, trucking is a way of life. There’s a big difference. Wayne Doherty falls into the latter category. A real, bona fide trucker with a deep love of trucks, he has immersed himself in the industry for the past decade, providing a magnificent service to his customers and also putting some stunning, immaculately-maintained vehicles on the road. The immeasurable pride he takes in his work can be seen in a cursory glance at one of his trucks. To Wayne Doherty,

this is much more than just a way of earning a few quid … it’s almost a vocation. And he has answered the call emphatically, nurturing one of the finest fleets in Leinster and a highly-regarded groupage service to boot! The business grew from the smallest beginnings. Wayne started off ten years ago with just one vehicle – a Transit van – and worked his way up from there. As demand for his services increased, he expanded the company accordingly. He now operates a fleet of eight rigids and one artic. Up until the start of 2009, the business was growing

on an annual basis but this has tailed off since the economic downturn, though Doherty Haulage is still holding its own. “It has become much more difficult to make a living out of haulage, with the recession and the rise in the cost of fuel. So we’re just consolidating things now and making sure everybody has a job and is getting a wage out of it. At the moment, I’m employing six full-time drivers and five more lads on a three-day week, so we’re doing okay.” Most of the fleet operates out of Greenogue Industrial Park in Rathcoole, providing a full range of delivery services across the 26 counties. Full and part loads are catered for but the majority of the work is groupage.. When it comes to choosing trucks, Wayne has a clear favourite… “I’ve always stuck to Scanias,” he says. “I have one 07 Isuzu at the moment but the rest of them are all Scania. My first wagon was a Scania and I just think there’s a great heart in them. She’s a tough old bird and she can take a bit of hard work. I find them very reliable and once you look after them and keep them in good condition, they will continue to perform as good as new. My first truck was a 393 250 and I went back to the 3 Series last year and bought a new 143 450. I recently bought another new one. They really are an incredible lorry if you know anything about them.” To say that Wayne Doherty takes great pride in his Scanias would be an exercise in understatement. “When I update them, they are like new lorries. Sounds like torture, though, trying to keep everything in proper running order in the current climate? “No, not really. Once you start as you mean to go on, you won’t have any problems. This has always been how I work. I’ve always put the fleet first; it’s an absolute priority. You keep your standards high and you don’t leave any room for error. All the lads who work for me know what I expect and they look after the trucks properly. They’re good lads and they know what to do. Personally, I really enjoy trucking and putting time into the fleet and

keeping the lorries right. “Which is probably just as well because for what you get out of it financially these days, if you didn’t enjoy it then you probably wouldn’t stay in it. It’s not exactly lucrative. If I didn’t love lorries, I would get rid of eight of them and keep one. But I love them and I’m up to nine now and I enjoy running them. Really, you have to have a love for what you are doing in this game. If you didn’t love trucks and the industry, then your heart would be broke. “With fuel costs it is a struggle to survive but I just put my head down do the best I can and hope things turn.” The term ‘hands-on owner’ could easily have been conceived to describe Wayne, who believes in rolling up his sleeves, getting his hands dirty and leading by example. Regarding the day-to-day maintenance of the trucks, he adds: “I’ve had the same mechanic with me for the past ten years and he’s a Scania man. He left McElvaneys and I was lucky enough to get him – Paddy Monaghan. I used to work six days a week myself but Paddy takes some of the pressure off me now and he’s a big help.” Moran Freight is Wayne’s main client and he enjoys a long-running partnership with the company. Would he take on another contract if it presented itself? Yes I would . If I have five or six customers on my books and they all give me a call on a fairly regular basis, then I’d be happy enough with that until we come out of this recession.” Looking to the future, Wayne states: “Going forward, we

The specialists There are many different services provided within the haulage industry and many companies try to provide as many of these as possible, but there are a few that concentrate on a specific areas of transport.

ildare based Kane International is a leader in the field of low loader work and such is the experience gained by the company since its inception that their expertise is used all over the world. The transportation of heavy machinery is certainly a specialised area that many hauliers try and avoid given the awkward nature of the work, but it is an area that Kane International managing director Brian Kane thrives in. Brian has an extensively knowledge in the haulage industry and has developed a reputation for providing a reliable and efficient service to a large customer base, which extends across Europe and further afield. Operating from a number of ports throughout Europe means that paperwork is a top priority in order to make sure a delivery is made on time.

“There is a huge amount of legislation to be sorted for any journey and everything has to be in order or the cargo could be held up for weeks and if that happens the customer will not be too happy. Thankfully we have the experience to make sure that everything is correct,” revealed Brian. “We would operate mainly from ports in Holland, Belgium, Germany and England, depending on where the load was being shipped to or from. We have shipped machinery to the likes of Australia and this would go through Southampton port where it all would be vetted.” Brian admitted that there are a lot more hauliers operating in this area since the Celtic Tiger signalled its last roar a few years back as work is scarce. “We would be kept going, but we are certainly not as

busy as we use to be as is the case for everyone I suppose at the moment. There are a lot of hauliers doing low loader work now, and they are trying to undercut everyone else, which is not helping anyone.” Kane International take great pride in the work that they do and every piece of machinery that passes through their hands is treated with the utmost of care. “A customer wants a machine delivered in the condition that they bought it in. All machinery that we carry would be washed and vetted before it is shipped to the customer. We have been involved in some massive jobs over the years and you learn from every job you do and try to improve on that area.” Despite the recession that has gripped the nation tighter than a vice forcing a number of banks and collection agencies to repossess machinery, Brian stated that it was an area that they were never interested in getting involved. “We never went into repossession work at all. We stayed busy in other areas, so decided to stay clear of it. We have carried machinery to auctions for banks, but have not been directly involved in repossession work.” Signs that the country could be finding its feet once again are seen in the fact that Kane International are actually importing more machinery than it is exporting at present. “We have found a swing in business and there are a good few imports into the country now, which is a good sign. We actually brought in a 20-tonne machine recently and that was the first we brought in for five years.” Brian did try his hand at refrigeration work a few years back, but he admitted that the rates meant that it was virtually impossible to keep going. “I got into some refrigeration work around 2001, but pulled the pin on that fairly quickly. The rates were terrible, so I decided to just concentrate on the low loader work. There are plenty of overheads to contend with in this industry, fuel and rates are the main two now.” Last year, Brian added another truck to the fleet, which means that he has four trucks on the road now as well as eight low loader trailers, which are kept in excellent condition. “We would ensure that the fleet is well maintained and serviced regularly. I would also try to upgrade the fleet every few years in order to avoid downtime.” Through his many years of experience, Brian has the knowledge to design the type of lowloader that suits his needs and he has recently developed such a trailer. “The problem with us going abroad is that it is very hard to get backloads to bring back. So we came up with an idea for a trailer that is essentially a low loader, but can be converted into a euroliner and this allows us to transport any type of goods back to Ireland or other parts of Europe.” Running the company from the office in Castledermot means that Brian has little opportunity to get out on the open road, a situation that he would love to rectify. “Anytime I set up a run for myself, something comes up and I can't go. I would give anything to get out on a run, but it must be 12 months since I did and that was just to England,” he concluded.

has moved on dramatically – it is more sophisticated and is one of our main strengths. We have had an exceptional year. We’ve been very busy and have managed to increase business by at least 20%. We were profitable last year and it looks like we will be again this year. “Seatruck Power” ... ahead on the Irish Sea Ro-Ro freight operator Seatruck is set to continue its success story on the Irish Sea routes, following the launch and naming of the second in a series of four new vessels building in Germany. “Seatruck Power” was launched at FSG Flensburg Yard, Germany, on Friday October 28. The new ferry was named by Niamh McManus, wife of Surefreight’s Brian McManus. Surefreight is a long-established supporter of Seatruck’s cost-effective unaccompanied freight service – a clear winner in the Irish Sea market. Meanwhile, preparations are progressing for the entry into service of the first of the four newbuildings. “Seatruck Progress” was launched in August and will enter service on the LiverpoolDublin route in December (to be joined in mid-February by “Seatruck Power”). The remaining new vessels are scheduled for delivery during the first half of 2012. They are likely to be deployed on Seatruck’s key Irish routes. Seatruck’s progress on the Irish Seamarket is a remarkable business success story. The company now offers 80 sailings per week on four routes linking strategically placed ports: Heysham-Dublin, Heysham-Warrenpoint and Heysham-Larne. Freight volumes doubled in the past two years. Seatruck now has 20 per cent of the Irish Sea market (as against 3.7 per cent in 2004). COMMITMENT TO THE IRISH SEA Alistair Eagles, Seatruck’s Managing Director, Irish Sea, has no doubt about how this success was achieved: “We are the only Irish Sea operator dedicated solely to the carriage of unaccompanied freight. This is what the operators want in a tough economic climate. Cost control is vital, but with no compromise on service. We provide operators with real economies, as the unaccompanied trailer is the most cost-effective way to move goods. Driver-accompanied movements are much more expensive. Our solution also reduces road mileage. Heysham and Liverpool – our primary UK ports – are much closer to the origin and destination of goods, when compared to traditional routings through Scotland and Wales. “As a result of this winning formula, our volumes have risen by 425 per cent in the 2004-2011 period, despite the fact that overall volumes have declined. The message is clear and we have taken it in. We intend to meet continued growth in demand for unaccompanied movements by deploying new ships which reduce crossing time, thanks to a service speed of 21 knots, and offer more trailer capacity. With Seatruck Progress and Seatruck Power in operation over the next few months, capacity will rise by 70 trailers daily in each direction. In 2011 Seatruck volumes have risen very steeply.” THE NEW SHIPS The four new ro-ro ships have a length of 142m, breadth of 25m and a deadweight of 5,300 tonnes. They will each have a capacity of 150 units, 35 Alaistair Eagles more than Seatruck’s current P Series vessels. The four-deck newbuildings (offering freight capacity of 2,166 lane metres) will be the biggest ships operating out of Heysham port. This year Seatruck will ship 300,000 units on the four Irish Sea routes. With fleet expansion, this total will grow substantially in 2012. Seatruck’s business model is based on operating some ships in own service and some with external charterers. Seatruck continues to explore new opportunities, where the freight-only model can be rolled out to new destinations. The company is well-positioned in the charter market, operating a very young fleet of smaller-sized freight only Ro-Ros. There is a declining global fleet of this vessel type - with an average age nearing 30 years. Alistair Eagles adds: “The backing of Clipper, our parent group, has galvanised our continued expansion. We blend the resources of a big group with an unusually close relationship with our customers in the haulage industry.”

FedEx to create 52 jobs in Northern Ireland The world’s largest courier service, Fed Ex is to establish a base in Northern Ireland creating 52 jobs. Fed Ex is the world's largest courier company, employing almost 300,000 people globally and delivering to 220 countries and territories. The new base is to be located at Kilroot Business Park; Carrickfergus as the courier company operate a domestic and international delivery service from Belfast International Airport. David Binks from Fed Ex said the new hub will help local businesses. "There are a lot of businesses who are disappointed that they are not growing quicker and, therefore, are looking for new opportunities in perhaps non-traditional areas to take advantage of some of the rapid growth we have seen in places like China, India, South Africa, Turkey and other parts of the world," he said. "By opening up our services now I think we are doing a great job to help service the Northern Ireland business community. "This investment by Fed Ex, will not only result in new jobs at a purpose-built facility in Carrickfergus, but it will also provide support for existing businesses across Northern Ireland by reducing the delivery time between here and customers overseas. In a statement issued to the German stock exchange, MAN confirmed: “This clears the way for close cooperation between MAN, Volkswagen, and Scania, aimed at sustaining the growth path pursued by the Munich-based vehicle and engineering VW now owns 55% of MAN specialist and promoting ongoing expansion of its position as one of the world´s leading transport-related engineering enterprises. Together, the companies will create one of the world´s leading suppliers of commercial vehicles.” Georg Pachta-Reyhofen, chief executive officer of MAN, adds: “We are opening up a new chapter in the 253-year history of the company, which is set to continue. At the same time, we shall retain our special MAN identity marked by innovation, the art of engineering and international positioning. “The success achieved by MAN, Volkswagen and Scania is based on identical values. We are therefore all convinced of the industrial logic behind close co-operation and are taking an open and committed approach to the new partnership.” The three manufacturers expect to achieve synergy savings of at least €200m per annum, predominantly through procurement. Wincanton chief exec happy despite £75.5m pre-tax loss Wincanton chief executive Eric Born is “very pleased” even though the company has posted a pre-tax loss of £75.5m. The substantial loss follows the sale of Wincanton’s European operations over the summer. The company – which announced in June that it was shedding its European operations to focus entirely on the UK and Ireland market - also revealed plans to dispose of its loss-making foodservice division. Wincanton saw revenue fall 5.6% to £1.04bn in its first half according to interim results for the six months to September 30th (compared to £1.1bn a year ago). Pre-tax profit of £11.7m in the first half of 2010 fell to a pre-tax loss of £75.5m – incorporating a £64.4m loss on exceptional items owing to the sale of its European operations. Allowing for the losses made in its discontinued business lines, its continuing business still made a pre-tax loss of £13.6m in the period, compared to a pre-tax profit of £17.8m a year ago. UK and Ireland revenue fell to £625.4m, from £680m a year ago, with operating profit down to £22.3m compared to £25.1m. Clients of Ireland’s leading delivery company look set to benefit from a new six-figure investment in its IT infrastructure. Nightline has announced that it is spending €200,000 on hardware to further improve its ability to handle a growing volume of business. Most of the expenditure will be taken up by new and more powerful servers at the company’s Dublin headquarters and sophisticated hand-held terminals for drivers. Oil removed from New Zealand vessel

All the remaining oil has been successfully removed from a stricken vessel in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty. Salvage crews have removed the oil from a cargo ship that ran aground on a New Zealand reef, avoiding an even worse environmental disaster. The vessel Rena grounded on the Astrolabe reef near Tauranga on October 5th and authorities feared the worst as about 385 tonnes of oil initially spilled into the ocean, defacling local beaches. Salvage crews began pumping oil in the days after the grounding while bad weather threatened to tear the ship apart. Almost six weeks later, the saga has come to an end. On Monday 14th November , Maritime New Zealand announced it had finished pumping 1,454 tonnes of oil from the ship and was sending a sea crane to the vessel to begin removing some of the 1,280 containers that remain on board.

Hauliers warned over driver training A recent survey by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) found that almost half of their members surveyed claim that meeting their EU driver training requirements was a ‘major concern’, second only to rising fuel costs. Both English and Irish drivers were advised to study their options on the subject. It is envisaged that, should this reluctance continue, there may well be a shortage of training opportunities by the time the deadline is reached. The principal reason for delaying in the cases looked at is the reluctance to invest in staff at a time when workloads are fluctuating and drivers may well be laid of or choose to leave after the training has been completed. As the DCPC is transferrable those drivers who hold the full qualification will find it much easier to move on to pastures new if and when the opportunity arises. Larger companies seem to account for most of the training take up so far whilst smaller operators are less able and less inclined to pay for training and to release staff at a time when they are already under financial pressure with no guarantee of a return if the driver leaves within three of four years. Current estimates vary but the FTA are quoting a figure of only 54% of eligible drivers being fully trained by the deadline whilst training agency 24/7 Training mention 64% should current trends continue, this despite a stronger uptake this year.

Trailer used to vent wife’s anger A 40ft trailer parked in a field just off the N2 near Ashbourne, Co Meath has revealed an irate wife’s true feelings. Draped across the trailer was a banner saying “Golf is a passport for a dirty weekend away with the lads. Wake up girls . . . A naive wife.” How the trailer ended up there or who put it there remains a mystery. The trailer had originally been owned by haulage firm Howarth Bros, but a spokeswoman for the firm stated that they had sold the trailer about six years ago. Some media sites suggested that it was an advertising stunt, but what in fact was been advertised remains a mystery also.

HGV and Class VI mirrors The Road Safety Authority is today, Friday 4th November announcing that all HGV’s with a DGVW (Design Gross Vehicle Weight) exceeding 7500kg, regardless of age must be fitted with Cyclops mirrors as of the 1st October 2012. The decision comes following a public consultation process and approval from the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport. The fitment of a class VI front mirror, often called a Cyclops mirror, has the potential to reduce fatalities and serious injuries from collisions between HGVs, cyclists and pedestrians. In Ireland the number of such incidents is disproportionately high and in particular incidents involving older people.. In the twelve year period between 1996 and 2008, 21 deaths and 14 serious injuries can be attributed to the inability of a HGV driver to see the pedestrian / cyclist as they passed in front of the vehicle’s blind zone. At present only HGV’s registered after 2007 are obliged to have these safety enhancing mirrors, however many older HGV’s may already have a mirror fitted. We are also reminding all cyclists to understand the dangers that exist when sharing the road with HGVs and to avoid placing themselves in the danger zone around HGVs. Pedestrians are reminded to use pedestrian crossings and to never cross in front of HGVs in stationary traffic. It will not apply to lighter HGV’s as they have lower profile cabs and generally have a clearer view of the area immediately in front. Mirrors on a HGV must comply with the requirements of Directive 2003/97/EC and must provide a clear view of the ground immediately in front of the vehicle. The global transportation industry must brace itself for a difficult 2012 with many businesses sustaining losses, a senior industry figure has warned. James E. Thompson, chairman of the Crown Worldwide Group, one of Hong Kong’s best-known logistics and transport service companies, told reporters that falling rates for US -bound containers from Asia suggest tough times for shipping companies in particular. The rate to ship a 40-foot container from Hong Kong to Los Angeles in August, for instance, was $1,857, down 30% from a year earlier, according to figures published in the latest issue of Shippers Today magazine, a publication of the Hong Kong Shipping Council. Speaking during a rare interview, Thompson, who is the founder, chairman and chief executive of Crown Worldwide Group, said: “In the shipping industry, you’ll see a lot of losses. They are in for a rough period.” He added: “I don’t see much happening in an election year that will lead to a dramatic reversal of the US economic outlook.” Rates have been falling in part because of slow economic growth in the US, still a key Asian market. Rates are also down because shippers are stuck with orders for vessels placed on expectations of better growth. “Once those ships are ordered, there is no way out,” Thompson said. Shares in Orient Overseas, the big Hong Kong shipper owned by the billionaire family of Tung Chee Chen, have dropped by more than a third in the past year. Operations at air freight companies have been relatively resilient, with Fedex, UPS and DHL expanding their business in China recently. Crown Worldwide, which operates in 60 countries, expects record sales of $800 million this year, compared with $675 million in 2010. Revenue has been gaining because of growth in its core relocations business, owing to an increase in the assignment of executives into and out of Asia.

Researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have developed the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck. The new truck could make freight transport by road clean, green and silent. The small-scale truck model is operated by remote control and simulates the performance of a long-haul diesel truck, typically used between Melbourne and Sydney. It is an exact replica of the Scania Highline series - often described as the Porsche of the truck world. Professor Aleksandar Subic, Head of the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, said given the carbon tax, emissions trading and rising diesel costs, new sustainable technologies offered industry a way of stabilising costs: “For residents worried about fumes and noise, the prospect of a silent, zero-emission truck is exciting. This latest innovation stems from our comprehensive research into sustainable mobility involving hydrogen technologies. We are also researching production of hydrogen using photovoltaic arrays and electrolysers, and solid state hydrogen storage.” The hydrogen-powered electrical system could also supply power for truck air-conditioning and radio, along with a trailer refrigeration unit. Hydrogen refilling stations are powered through solar PV panels.

Monaghan to Derry motorway shelved Plans to construct a cross border motorway between Monaghan and Derry have been halted after the Irish Government stated that it would not be paying its share of the cost. The last Government had pledged £400 million for the project, but since then a new Cabinet has been elected and due to our current economic status, a decision has been made not to proceed with the motorway. A number of infrastructure projects are set to be shelved as harsh cutbacks take place as reports suggest that in the region of €740 million will be cut from the capital budget next year. The news that the motorway will not be constructed will come as a big blow to Donegal where it was hoped that the project would bring further investment to the county. “If these reports are true, this is a major blow for Donegal and the North West and would amount to a complete abandonment of firm election commitments from both Fine Gael and the Labour Party,” said Deputy McConalogue. “The previous Government was fully committed to this project and had set aside funding in the four-year National Recovery Plan to have it completed by 2015. Fine Gael and Labour promised voters in the North West that they would deliver the A5 project if elected to Government. However Northern Ireland’s Finance Minister Sammy Wilson says a major upgrading project on the A5 will still go ahead. The North’s Assembly remains committed to the proposed project. The Irish government had originally agreed to contribute £400m towards a 55-mile upgrade on the Politicians in the North are outraged by the u-turn, and are also upset that the smaller amount promised from the South won’t be available for five or six years. Mr Wilson said: “We have had a promise of £40m. We had a promise of £400m as well, so I think we've got to bear in mind that it was being reneged on in the past. It might be reneged on in the present. Until the money is actually there we can't be certain what's going to happen. “All we can say is the executive made the commitment after the recent executive meeting that we believe that there needs to be an improvement in the roads infrastructure in the west of the province. “When the money becomes available then it will be done. The executive has given a commitment that when the money becomes available we will do those parts of the road we can afford to do. “We will prioritise those parts |of the road which most need |redone but we know that the money is not going to become available from the south until 2016/17. It is an international project and it must be joint funded.” But not everybody is upset that the Irish government withdrew its pledged funds to complete the new A5 motorway. The lobby group which led opposition to the £850m Aughnacloy-Derry motorway proposals has expressed relief that the scheme will no longer be able to proceed as planned. The Alternative A5 Alliance (AA5A) says the Irish government’s announcement that it was not prepared to fork out its £400m contribution should be taken as a cue to scale back the proposals. Malcolm Lake from the AA5A group says: “The Government should seek the co-operation of the stakeholders, with a fresh, unbiased look at ideas for the transport infrastructure of the north west of Ireland”.

Minister Varadkar confirms deferral of major road and rail projects Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has confirmed that investment in transport infrastructure will be scaled back significantly over the next five years. In order to allow the Government to meet its commitments in health and education, restore our economic sovereignty, and keep taxes down, the cutbacks are to be introduced. The Minister confirmed that the main construction work will start on Luas BXD in 2015, while there will be ongoing investment in smarter travel projects, and two rounds of sports capital funding. There will also be investment in tourism capital including support for a diaspora centre or museum as an iconic tourist attraction. “The Government is making these cutbacks in order to honour our commitments to the people and to the troika to bring the budget deficit to 3% of the GDP Major capital projects by 2015 so that Ireland’s economic sovereignty can be are being scaled back restored. It will also assist us to honour our commitments to keep income taxes down and maintain basic social welfare rates. “Overall spending on transport capital will fall by almost 50% from €1.5 billion in 2011 to €0.8 billion in 2016. More than 85% of transport capital will be required to restore and maintain existing roads and railways, and to purchase replacement buses and trains. The priority is therefore to make the best use, and to get maximum value, from existing infrastructure. That is why we are focusing on projects like Luas BXD, smarter travel initiatives, fleet renewal, and safety and maintenance. “Given that we already have a large number of ‘shovel-ready’ projects which have been suspended until after 2016, there is little point in spending more money on planning new projects.” “Resources will be focused on areas which have previously not benefited to the same extent. One bypass at Ballaghadereen will proceed to construction next year, but no other bypasses will be affordable during the programme. The vast majority of road funding will be focused on maintaining and restoring the existing road network. “In terms of road projects funded through a Public Private Partnership, we aim to finalise funding arrangements for the N11 Rathnew/Newlands Cross bundle in the coming year. Other roads PPPs will be pursued where feasible during the course of the plan. Given the significant land acquisition costs involved with the proposed M20, the NRA will be asked to withdraw the project from An Bord Pleanála at this stage and it can be re-activated in the future."

Elektromotive wins Eu1.2 million Irish contract Mass roll-out of EV charging stations will add to rapidly expanding network Elektromotive has won a contract from the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) to supply a network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the Republic of Ireland. Beginning this December and continuing into early 2012, the roll-out forms part of an ambitious plan to make EVs a major part of the Republic of Ireland’s green transport strategy. The UK-based EV recharging point manufacturer will supply 200 highly advanced ‘twin-head’ Elektrobay charging stations as part of the €1.2 million deal, with the installations carried out by the company’s partner, Carra Ireland. Each Elektrobay is capable of charging two EVs simultaneously and will add to the burgeoning network of chargers that Elektromotive has supplied to the Republic of Ireland over the past two years. “Winning this significant order from the ESB is something of a personal achievement for me,” asserts Calvey Taylor-Haw, Managing Director at Elektromotive. “I have spent over four years working with Carra Ireland to ensure that our advanced Elektrobay chargers are the best for the ‘ecars’ project, and I consider the team at the ESB to be some of the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic people in the EV industry today. It is great that the organisation has recognised that Elektromotive can deliver the right product for its network”. The Elektrobays will operate on the ESB ‘ecars’ charging station network, with plans to expand the network to around 1,500 public charging sockets. Since launching its first Elektrobay charging station, Elektromotive has developed a full range of recharging products for all types of plug-in EVs, including its Home Charger, Fast Charger (rated at 400 Volts AC) and a DC-DC 50KV Rapid Charger, which is capable of charging compatible EVs to 80 per cent of their charge in just 20 minutes.
