W

exford based Whitty Transport has been established ten years now and for this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the company and speak to managing director James Whitty about the success of the company. Whitty Transport specialises in bulk dry food transportation, within industries such as flour mills and bakeries. Established in 2001, the company has a loyal customer base maintained by offering competitive pricing, customer service and a commitment to the highest standards. Specialising in bulk transport means that the company mainly workers with tankers, and around 90% of their work involves hauling flour and bread for Irish Pride bakeries. James explains that he had a good knowledge of the industry before he started working for himself. “I was working for another haulier drawing for Irish Pride, when he decided to pull out of the business and I bought it off him. Having worked in this area, I had a good understanding of the work involved, so that was a good start,” said James. “We specialise in bulk transport and the majority of our work would involve drawing flour for Irish Pride, which usually comes in from the UK. We would have 20 tankers on the road

and the fact that we are so close to Rosslare Port means that we are ideally located. We provide an entire range of transportation services to one of the largest food manufacturers in Ireland. We operate routes across Ireland and throughout the UK. We are strategically based in Taghmon, Co. Wexford close to Rosslare Europort and European routes E01 and E30. We have also recently opened our first UK depot outside Leeds which means collections and deliveries can be made promptly all over Ireland and the UK.” Timing is key to everything in the haulage industry, but when you are dealing in the type of work that Whitty Transport excel in, then there is nothing more important than on time delivery. “You cannot afford to be an hour late in this job. Everybody knows that bread has a very short life expectancy and bakeries need to make their deliveries early in the morning, otherwise they will lose their customers. That is why we place a great emphasis on ensuring that the flour is delivered on time and efficiently.” Maintenance is key to ensuring that all deliveries are on schedule as any unnecessary breakdowns need to be avoided and for this to happen, James' brothers Denis and Nicholas over the

maintaining of all the fleet. “Our constantly expanding fleet consists of over 20 trucks and various trailer types, including a diesel tanker and a vacuum tanker. We have our own purpose built maintenance facility at our Wexford site. The workshop staff are responsible for the service and repair of all our vehicles. Reliability is assured through a continuous preventative planned maintenance schedule.” James knows the importance of a reliable work force and with 28 on the books, it can be tough to find the right mix, although he admits that is very fortunate to have such loyal and reliable workers on the books. “I couldn't say a bad word about any of the employees. They are hard workers and each and everyone of them are very competent in their own areas, which is very important, given the time constraints we are working against. Most of them would be with us since the very start and I'm delighted to have them here.” Having a good working relationship with your employer is also a big help and on this front, James admits that Irish Pride are very good to work for. “They would be very fair and if they say something they will follow through on it. There is never any problem with payment and once we are providing

the level of service that they require, then there is no reason that anything should change.” Scania is the preferred choice of truck and James revealed that some of the fleet is generally upgraded every year in order to keep the trucks fresh and avoid downtime. “We generally change a few of the trucks every year as we would get rid of the older ones and bring in new ones. We didn't do that this year though, as we bought a few more tankers in England, which is where we would generally buy them because they are hard got in Ireland. “All our trucks are fitted with a web based GPS vehicle tracking system, allowing us to monitor time spent at a job; increase route efficiencies with live tracking and mapping; improve response time with nearest vehicle locator. Our drivers use satellite navigation systems which are installed in all our trucks to plan their routes in the most efficient way possible.” As members of the Irish Road Haulage Association, James is well aware of the trials and tribulations that the haulage industry is having to endure at the moment and there are a number of issues that he feels need to be

addressed for the sake of the whole industry. “The price of diesel is without doubt the biggest problem in the haulage industry at the moment and it is a situation that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. The price of fuel is now at a critical stage and hauliers cannot afford to pay the current prices. “Work is not as plentiful as it was and another issue I have is that some operators are coming in and doing jobs for next to nothing which I can't understand as it can't be paying them, but it is certainly not a level playing field with the way things are.” ETAILS Whitty Transport is COMPANY D hoping to expand in ort Whitty Transp the near future as , on m gh Ta James and his team Co. Crawford Cars has been going strong for over two decades

Quality cars and vans at an affordable price For high-quality cars and commercial vehicles at an affordable price, look no further than Crawford Cars located close to Lisburn, County Antrim. Crawfords is a family-run business that has been providing an excellent sales and service facility to motorists from both sides of the border for over 20 years. Irish Trucker visited the company’s Headquarters at Maze and took a closer look at the impressive selection of pre-owned vehicles on site. While there, we had a few words with director Trevor Crawford.

I

n these harsh economic times, motorists need bargains more than ever before. The fact of the matter is: most people can no longer afford to buy brand-new vehicles, so – bearing in mind that transport is a necessity rather than a luxury – the search for quality, affordable second-hand vehicles has never been more intense. Luckily, Crawford Cars is here to provide hard-pressed motorists with a solution. Specialising in top-quality, second-hand passenger cars

66

(and, to a lesser extent, commercial vans), Crawford Cars offers its customers a service that simply cannot be beaten. They sell only vehicles that are in superb condition, all of which are fully-serviced and leave the showroom in practically good-as-new condition. They also have their own workshop, so a wonderful backup service is also available as part of the deal. Al in all, the service provided by Crawford Cars is of the very highest calibre and that’s why the family business has

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

been going strong for more than two decades, attracting a steady flow of business from north and south of the border. While the recession has knocked the proverbial stuffing out of many companies, Crawford Cars has continued to do what it does best – providing customers with value for money – and that’s why their future remains bright. Reflecting on the genesis of the business, director Trevor Crawford notes: “My father William and I set the business up about 20 years ago and Directors William and Trevor Crawford we’re based at Maze, Lisburn. Second-hand cars is the main part of the business. We sell new and used cars but these days most people are looking for a good deal on secondhand vehicles.” Traditionally, Crawford Cars attracts customers from both sides of the border but Trevor admits that enquiries from the Republic of Ireland aren’t quite as frequent as they once were. While people in the South are strapped for money, the counter argument to this is that everybody needs a car to get around and you won’t find a better deal than the ones available at Crawfords. “We’re only 20 minutes from Newry and just an hour from Enniskillen, so we’re convenient to anybody travelling from South of the border,” Trevor notes. “We’re totally independent so we can get them the best deal out there. We specialise in diesel cars, which are very economical to run and also hold a good re-sale value. We have a website – www.crawfordcars.com – where people can look at all the cars and commercial vehicles in stock

and we’re always available to deal with enquiries over the phone or of course if people want to call in for a chat or to take a car for a test drive. If somebody from the Republic wants to buy a vehicle from us, we can help them out with all the paperwork for importing it, so they can literally just pick up the keys and drive the car home.” Crawford Cars also boasts full workshop facilities with the very latest diagnostic equipment and provides a keen car valeting service on-site. The age of vehicles in stock ranges from 2011 to 2004 and warranties of three, six and twelve months are offered, depending on the value of the car being purchased. “All the vehicles are in immaculate condition and perfect running order,” Trevor continues. “We have up to 100 vehicles to choose from here at any given time and they are all in top nick. All the cars and vans are sourced from England. I go over myself twice a month and buy them and we only bring back the very best. We’re doing well enough.

For a great deal in cars or commercial vehicles, look no further

Business is good and we’ve had a decent year so far.” Going forward, Crawford Cars is on very solid ground financially, which will enable them to continue to provide customers with unbelievable value for money in the long term. “We have no debt and no major overheads,” Trevor continues. “We own the site here so our overheads are very low and we are able to pass these savings on to the customer.” Readers of this magazine will no doubt be interested to hear that the site where the business is located was once the depot of a successful haulage business operated by the Crawford family. William Crawford used to oversee a large fleet of lowloaders and tippers when Crawfords Haulage was one of the leading transport companies in Northern Ireland for over 30 years. With a background in haulage, William has a vast knowledge of the transport

past 15 years. It’s a separate business, based here on the same site, providing a professional valeting service, which is also very popular.” Looking to the future, Trevor believes Crawford Cars can continue to go from strength to strength: “I’m confident. I think we are in a good position. We provide a quality service and as long as you continue to look after customers and don’t get too greedy, then they will come back. We have a lot of repeat business and we also accept trade-ins. We still have a good bit of business from the South. There’s still money about if you’re providing people with value.”

GreatGas scoops ‘Best Oil Company Initiative’ for its fully unmanned self-service filling station concept at Ireland’s Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards 2011 GreatGas actively seeking forecourt owners to facilitate roll out of more unmanned outlets across Ireland over next 12 months Great Gas Petroleum (Ireland) Ltd, the nationwide fuel supplier which operates Ireland’s only fully unmanned self-service station, has scooped the award for ‘Best Oil Company Initiative’, at Ireland’s Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards 2011, for its fully unmanned self-service filling station concept. The Irish Forecourt and Convenience Retailer Awards are designed to reward professionalism and entrepreneurial spirit in retailing, reward innovation and commitment while, at the same time, helping to raise industry standards. GreatGas’ revolutionary 24/7 ‘pay-at-the-pump’ forecourt opened in Santry, in Dublin, two years ago and has been a huge success ever since. Until recently, only diesel was available at GreatGas 24/7 on the Old Airport Road in Santry, Dublin 9 as dispensing petrol on an unmanned forecourt was prohibited by Irish law. This legislation has now changed and petrol is now on offer at the outlet. The addition of petrol to the forecourt has provided extra convenience for customers, particularly those on early and late flights to and from Dublin airport and tourists who need to fill up before returning their rental cars. Ray O’ Sullivan, Managing Director of GreatGas, says they are delighted with the award win. “We are thrilled to have received this award in recognition for our efforts in being the first to market with this unmanned concept in Ireland and we are also delighted that we can now sell petrol as well as diesel at our unmanned forecourts. Our philosophy is quite clear – reduced fuelling times, reduced overheads, reduced fuel prices and more happy customers. Safety and security is paramount at all times on the site. We have 24 hour monitoring via CCTV and a security firm, as well as the latest environmental management systems. In addition, customers can’t drive-off without paying for the fuel, as payment is first authorised by the bank on their debit or credit card.” “We are now well advanced with plans to roll out three more outlets around the country in the coming year and we are also open to approaches from other existing forecourt owners who are interested in partnering with us on this new business model. GreatGas 24/7 ‘pay-at-the-pump’ forecourts provide customers with quick and hassle free petrol and diesel, twenty four hours a day all year round. The facility could not be easier to use! You simply drive onto the forecourt, insert your credit, debit or fuel card at the pump and select the amount of petrol or diesel you require. You are then asked to enter your card’s security pin number and this will unlock the pump and you can begin pumping the fuel. After dispensing the requested amount of fuel, you will be provided with a receipt. GreatGas worked with Tokheim, the international fuel retailing solutions provider, to bring the concept to Ireland. Tokheim has already implemented the service across Europe, with an estimated 20,000 ‘pay@pump’ terminals now in place across the continent. We sell all over the North and South of Ireland as well as exporting vehicles to other countries both in Europe and externally. There was a steady demand for rigid trucks throughout last year and we can only hope it continues in these uncertain times. “We offer exceptional value and our second-hand trade were never as cheap as they were last year. Anger at Slane bypass deferral The Bypass Slane Committee has blasted the Government for its decision to withdraw its plans to construct an alternative route around the Co Meath town. The Government announced last week that any plans to construct new roadworks would be shelved as part of their cutback plans and this includes the Slane bypass. "There is a very real threat to the lives of every user of the N2 through our village and, as we have been assured that the government understands this threat, they have a moral responsibility to act," said spokesperson Michelle Power. However, Deputy Shane McEntee claimed there was no change in the status of the bypass and that he had been assured the project will continue to be brought through the land purchase stage, bringing it to 'shovel-ready' status. Cllr Wayne Harding said the news was a huge blow to the many people who had spent years campaigning for the bypass on safety grounds. "The last government provided funding to get the project to a planning stage and had even included it in their four-year plan. It has disappeared from this plan despite promises right up until July that it would form part of the top five projects. At every protest in Slane village, the people of Slane have always warned that more lives will be lost," he said.

SeaFrance look to DFDS for support The President and CEO of DFDS, Niels Smedegaard, has warned that only the Danish group can save the ailing cross-Channel ferry operator. Speaking to French regional newspaper, La Voix du Nord, he dismissed the offer on the table for SeaFrance from the company’s workers’ co-operative, as a "mirage." A Paris commercial court will convene tomorrow to deliver its judgment on the two bids. The DFDS bid, which has France’s LD Lines as a minority partner, focuses on creating a new company which would operate several cross-Channel routes: Calais-Dover (currently, SeaFrance), DunkirkDover (DFDS) and Le Havre-Portsmouth and Dieppe-Newhaven (LD Lines) . Three of SeaFrance’s fleet of four vessels would be retained, with the Nord Pas de Calais freighter being switched to ply a DunkirkDover route instead of Calais. Out of SeaFrance’s permanent workforce of over 800, DFDS-LD Lines would retain 460 workers. "The co-op’s bid does not have any financing and also makes provision to retain four vessels and all of the workforce. In the current crisis situation, with the competition and over-capacity which exists on the cross-Channel market today, the co-op’s project just isn’t viable,” Smedegaard claimed. He added: “Certain people still believe that the French state will intervene financially but the EU has made it clear that this is no longer possible. Is France going to go against the EU? The reality is, apart from DFDS, no one is interested in SeaFrance." IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Avis announce partnership with Windsor Galway Avis Ireland today announced a new partnership with Windsor Galway. The partnership sees the introduction of a new Avis downtown office ideally located on Monivea Road, Ballybrit Galway adding to Avis’s evergrowing list of downtown locations in Ireland. Existing downtown locations have already proven a hit with customers who do not own their own car but wish to have the freedom which using a car brings. The new office in Galway offers travellers a convenient, hasslefree transport option on their own doorstep. The new Avis downtown location is intended to serve the needs of guests staying at hotels and hostels in the Galway City area. Avis are also seeing an increase in Galway to Dublin rentals on account of the reduced journey times afforded by the new M/N6 motorway. Recent online research carried out for Avis by Sponge It, amongst the Irish public, found that after price, convenience of location for pick up and drop off is the most important element when it comes to people deciding to rent a car. Avis downtown locations with easy to access offices are designed to tick this box for potential renters. Mandy Young, Marketing and Direct Sales Manager of Avis Ireland, said: “We are always listening to the changing needs and wants of our customers. These convenient and easily accessible downtown locations are just one example of Avis putting our customers need first. We are delighted to be able to partner with Windsor Galway and bring this new service to the people of Galway and its visitors.” The new Avis Galway location brings the total number of Avis downtown locations in Ireland to five, with two in Dublin, two in Cork and the new Windsor Galway office. These easy-toaccess locations provide people in both town and city centres with greater mobility and flexibility. Avis and Windsor are a perfect partnership, with similar work ethics and values. “We at Windsor pride ourselves on our strong customer service to all who walk through our doors. Avis are a great match as they also embrace this way of working, as seen through their message of ‘We Try Harder’,” said Michael Butler, Dealer Principal at Windsor Galway Avis Windsor Galway office will be open six days a week: Monday to Friday 9am-5pm Saturday 9am-1pm For more information, see www.avis.ie or call 1890 405 060.
