DHL named Official Logistics Partner of Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 DHL to deliver global logistics solutions for one of the world’s most demanding sporting events DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, has become the Official Logistics Partner to the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, one of the world’s most prestigious sailing events in the world. With exclusive rights secured for all international and domestic freight movements, DHL services for the event will amount to a complete logistics solution encompassing air, sea and land transportation of high value kit and equipment. “The Volvo Ocean Race is a world-class and truly global venture. We look forward to supporting one of the most demanding international sporting events with our know-how in transports and logistics. Once again, we can prove our ability to deliver against extremely tight timelines in challenging environments around the world and deal with the complex logistics of big sporting events,” said Thomas George, CEO, DHL Freight. “It’s a perfect fit. High-sea sailing requires core characteristics such as teamwork, passion, speed, technology and a can-do-spirit. These are the same values that drive performance at DHL,” added George. DHL will set up a detailed and full logistics plan for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race. In line with this plan, DHL will supply the race organizers, race teams and partners with the full range of freight forwarding and venue logistics services. Key services will include the port-to-port transportation of cargo and sailing equipment by air, sea and on land. As Official Logistics Partner to the Volvo Ocean Race, DHL will be responsible for the complete logistics management from pick-up of the teams’ cargo at any given venue to on-time delivery of the containers at the next race village. In addition to air, ocean and road transportation services, DHL will provide full tracking & tracing of the cargo in transit as well as customs clearance and warehousing services. DHL will also be responsible for ad-hoc Express shipments for the Volvo Ocean Race. “We are extremely happy to announce DHL as our Official Logistics Partner,” said Knut Frostad, CEO Volvo Ocean Race. “The race needs a reliable partner and we look forward to working with DHL on the unique sporting and logistical challenge that is the Volvo Ocean Race.” The next Volvo Ocean Race will start in the Spanish port of Alicante in the autumn of 2011 and finish in Galway, Ireland, in the summer of 2012. During the nine months of competition, the teams will sail over 39,000 nautical miles across the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya (China), Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajai (Brazil), Miami, Lisbon and Lorient (France). The first race of this kind took place in1973-74, and the 2011-12 race will be the 11th edition of the event.

No shortage of salt this winter The fiasco of councils not having enough salt to grit roads during last winter’s big freeze will not occur this time around, Local Councils will have adequate quantities of salt according to the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey. The Government came under a lot of pressure last year after it was revealed that councils hadn't near enough salt to put on the roads to combat the icy conditions that left many roads treacherous. However, the Transport Minister has revealed that over 80,000 tonnes of salt has been ordered in and that should take care of any extremities that may occur over the coming months. Motorways will bet the first to benefit if needed and the allocation of salt will then work its way down to regional and secondary roads.

Transport Minister forced to defend policies Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey clashed with the head of the one of the country’s leading construction firms as a war of words broke out at a road opening ceremony. SIAC Construction boss Finn Leyden accused the government of not doing enough to secure the future of the construction industry, which has been hit the hardest since the Noel Dempsey had to defend government current economic recession policies gripped the nation two years ago. Leyden stressed that the Metro North project should be scrapped and other projects should be pursued that would be more beneficial to the construction industry. However, speaking at the opening of the Crusheen to Gort motorway, Minister Dempsey stressed that enough had been spent on road projects over the last few years. "It is a little bit unrealistic to expect that we can spend another €13bn over the next 10 years providing roads that may not be needed." "There is an absolute necessity for a project like Metro North. "I don't see how construction jobs like Metro North -- with 4,000 jobs directly and 3,000 indirectly -- are any different to ones that will be provided by roads." IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Fragile Irish Transport Industry will break under new EU Trailer Height Legislation claim TPN Proposed new EU legislation aimed at standardising the height of all new semi-trailers to four metres in height throughout Europe will have dire consequences for an already fragile transport and freight industry in Ireland, as well as having environmental consequences as it would add 1,000 articulated trucks to Irish roads. Owen Cooke, Chairman, The Pallet Network (TPN) and Independent Express Cargo Ltd, two of Ireland’s leading freight, transport and logistics services providers, said, “If this 4-metre height limit is implemented, it will double the cost of transport of most dry freight products around Ireland, force local Irish transport companies out of business in favour of foreign owned multinationals and put an extra 1,000 articulated trucks on the road, which will in turn increase the amount of fossil fuel being used by 91 million litres. This proposed EU regulation is in effect turning the clock backwards, reversing recent industry wide developments on fuel and emission efficiencies and reduced transport and consumer costs.” Over the past ten years, the Irish transport industry has invested in approximately 1,000 articulated trucks with a trailer height between 4.65m and 4.9m. Double-deck trailers allow for two load decks instead of one, effectively putting two trailer-loads on a single unit. The new legislation, which aims to standardise the height of all new semi-trailers built under Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) to four metres in height, will require more trailers to move the same amount of goods. Recent research conducted by Prof Alan McKinnon, of the Logistics Research Centre at Heriot-Watt University from the UK, has shown that the proposed EU ban on double-deck trailers would increase the UK’s annual road haulage costs by around £305 million and that switching from double-deck to standard trailers would increase fuel consumption and carbon emissions by a mid-range estimate of 64%. In terms of its impact on emissions, it would be equivalent to adding 150,000 new cars to Britain’s roads. “The consequences for Ireland’s transport industry would be similar to those in the UK, though on a smaller scale,” said Cooke. “We estimate that it will increase the fuel import bill by €60 million, add 238,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere, add 8% to the cost of Irish exports to the UK and Europe, cost consumers an extra €125 million per year and add a whopping €30 million to the annual cost of imported trucks from Germany, Holland and Sweden.” The Pallet Network (TPN) and Independent Express Cargo Ltd are approaching the Departments of Transport, Finance and Environment, as well as Irish MEP’s (Members European Parliament), to lobby for rigourous opposition to the proposed new legislation. “The UK’s Transport Minister, Mike Penning, has promised to negotiate strongly to achieve the best outcome for the UK. I would like to see a similar response from the Irish Government and to this effect we are seeking to meet with the relevant Ministers and gain some reassurances that they will seek to stop this proposal,” concluded Cooke.

New Ford Dealership for Castlebar Ford Ireland has strengthened its network presence west of the Shannon with the announcement of a new Ford dealership for Castlebar in Co. Mayo. Long-standing Ford dealer J.J. Griffith Limited of Claremorris has announced that they will operate a new dealership in Castlebar from January 2011. Located on James Street in Claremorris and with a staff of 30 experienced motor industry professionals, J.J. Griffith has been serving the motorists of Mayo since 1945. “In these tough market conditions, this is a hugely positive development for the town of Castlebar and of course for Ford”, commented Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford Ireland. “The provision of a strong, accessible dealer network has long been part of the Ford promise to its customers, and this development enables us to live up to that promise in Castlebar and its environs.” “Ford has a long and proud history in Co. Mayo”, commented Jim Hughes, Managing Director of J.J. Griffith Limited, “and we are delighted to be reestablishing the Ford presence in Castlebar, an important and thriving town in Mayo.” The new dealership will initially be managed by Padraic Fahy who has built up more than 40 years of experience at the Claremorris dealership. In addition, it is expected the dealership will provide new positions for a minimum of 20 staff in its first year of operation. The location for the new dealership will be announced in the coming weeks.

Calls made for fuel rebate The Freight Transport Association, which now represents the logistics industry in Ireland has called for both the Irish and UK governments to introduce a rebate on fuel taxes. The haulage industry both here and in the UK have to pay more fuel taxes than the rest of Europe and the FTA want a rebate on the extra surcharge. A spokesperson for the FTA said: “With diesel duty in the UK by far the highest in Europe (57.19p per litre) – almost twice that of the EU average – a fuel duty rebate that means UK and Irish businesses are not out of pocket would certainly make sense. “Moreover, fuel duty could also be structured to give those more fuel-efficient companies a more significant rebate.”

Belfast roadworks on hold A £30 million upgrade of Belfast city centre roads is to be put on hold over the Christmas period to ensure that businesses don’t offer over this lucrative period. Since 2009, the Streets Ahead project has been ongoing as the city centre underwent a make over of introducing new and more street lighting as well as seating areas. Throughout all this time, the work has caused numerous problems for traders in the area including the fact that delivery drivers had difficulties in dropping off their cargo to the various shops. However, for the next few weeks, there will be little sign of any work being carried out as the Christmas trade takes over leaving traders and shoppers to go out their business without any hassle.

BPW’s Eco Disc - Lower Weight, Shorter Service time and long life

BPW - Eco Disc Brake

Even though it is relatively new to the market (November 2009), BPW’s ECO Disc has already proved its credentials as a successful model. More than 100,000 brake calipers have already been produced in BPW’s purpose-built, ultramodern production site in Germany where there are currently more than 1,000 ECO disc brake calipers rolling off the conveyor belt every day. The compact design of the ECO Disc is significant; the brake caliper is mounted directly to the axle beam and BPW design engineers have eliminated the need for a brake carrier. In addition to the new design being more service-friendly, it has also enabled weight savings of up to 39 kg in a tri-axle set fitted with ECO Disc series 4309 (ø disc 430 mm, for 9 t axle load). As with all axles produced by BPW, the ECO Hub is a standard fitment on the ECO Disc. The ECO Hub can be removed as an entire unit which in turn allows the disc to be changed without the need to remove the caliper (except TSB 4312 and TSB 3709 with zero off-set). On a three axle set this can save an hour of workshop time – an advantage in the workshop and also for the trailer operator. In order to ensure that the new trailer disc brake met BPW’s high quality standards it was subjected to demanding road testing. Neither icy Polar blasts nor the dust and burning heat of the Australian outback bothered the ECO Disc. One of the factors that make this possible is the innovative internal seals. These provide enhanced protection from thermal and mechanical damage, shielding the interior of the brake, in Replacement of the brake disc particular from dirt and damp penetration. Other measures include additional seals to protect the guide pins and the BPW’s ECO Disc brake is available in three sizes - TSB 3709 (ø disc 370 mm, for 9 t axle load), TSB 4309 (ø disc 430 mm, for 9 t axle load) and TSB 4312 (ø disc 430 mm, for 12 t axle load.) Six of the best for Nightline as carrier’s Republic depots receive security plaudits Ireland’s largest independent parcel and freight carrier has underlined its credentials after being named among the very best in Europe for its standards of security. All six facilities owned by Nightline across the Irish Republic have been granted full certification by the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA). The carrier’s main depot in Dublin has been awarded TAPA ‘A’ status, signifying that it meets the very highest standards set by the organisation. Its five remaining sites at Sligo, Galway, Waterford, Limerick and Cork have all been given TAPA ‘B’ accreditation. Nightline is now believed to be one of the highest concentrations of TAPA certified premises operated by a single carrier anywhere in Europe. The company’s CEO, John Tuohy, said the awards were recognition of the premium which Nightline placed on ensuring client shipments were handled safely. “We are delighted. To achieve certification for all of our sites in the Republic is no mean feat. It is tribute both to the processes which we have put in place and the individuals we employ who maintain them on a daily basis. “Nightline moves a significant volume of commercial and datasensitive materials on behalf of its clients. That an independent and industry-leading body has given us its seal of approval will be reassuring for them too.” Since being formed in 1992, Nightline has not only become the only truly nationwide Irish carrier but the firm of choice for internationally-renowned mobile ‘phone, tobacco, pharmaceutical, leisure and computer brands. It is now responsible for transporting one-fifth of all freight in Ireland. The highest security rating was given to Nightline’s Dublin hub because of the measures put in place for handling the company’s most sensitive traffic. TAPA brings together various leading manufacturers, logistics providers, freight carriers and law enforcement agencies with the goal of improving security of traffic. The body has developed a freight security standard, recognised through the world, to determine acceptable security requirements and the methods to be used in meeting those criteria. Mr Tuohy said provisions had been put in place to ensure that Nightline’s Belfast facility would be its seventh Irish TAPA-ranked depot. Earlier this year, the firm also opened a UK office at Altham, in Lancashire, which has since been instrumental in landing a string of major clients.

Insurance premiums to rise

IWMA accusses Dublin City Council of spin on Poolbeg project

Almost every motor insurance company in the country is expected to increase their rates in 2011, according to a survey carried out recently. In total 89% of the insurance companies that took part in the survey carried out by Deloitte's annual Motor Insurance survey stressed that there was a need to increase the premiums next year. The news will be a massive blow to the haulage industry, who have already stated that the insurance rates are crippling the sector, and this latest news is just another setback for hauliers. “The challenge for motor insurance companies is to balance the market forces that are currently at work,” said Dick Tulloch of Deloitte. “On one hand an increasingly price sensitive and savvy consumer is leading to fluctuations in companies’ market share. On the other hand, decreases in the number of premiums, and the level of cover in these premiums, are impacting significantly on profitability. “What’s clear is that companies operating in the industry will need to align premium rates with the increases in claims and expense costs while also providing appropriate policies for recessionary pressed customers.”

Reported comments from Dublin City Council that the local authority expected the Poolbeg incinerator to be operational by the start of 2011 – and that this is the reason why waste is to be treated outside Dublin – are nothing more than disingenuous spin claim the Irish Waste Management Association. "Construction of the Poolbeg project began in December 2009. Even if it has proceeded IWMA refute Dublin City at full speed from this date, a Council claims project of this size would never have been operational only 12 months later. Dublin City Council understands this perfectly well but has been unable to let this opportunity for some easy – but disingenuous – spin to pass it by," claims the IWMA. "Furthermore, reported comments that the City Council may send waste as far as Galway, and a host of other counties, for treatment is a blatant attempt to scaremonger in local communities outside Dublin." Commenting this morning, Brendan Keane stated: “Not for the first time Dublin City Council stands accused of massaging the facts in a most extraordinary manner. Dublin City Council began construction of this project almost 12 months ago and could never have been operational by January 1st, 2011. “Dublin City Council is also engaged in a blatant attempt to scaremonger on a national scale. By holding out the prospect of large-scale exporting of waste from the Dublin Region, the local authority is banking on local dissent to drive their project forward. “Their position takes no account of the facts: what’s proposed for Poolbeg is simply too large – an incinerator with approximately half the capacity is what the Dublin Region needs. An oversized incinerator will lead to job losses, will drive down recycling, and will cost the taxpayer and ratepayer millions of euro in penalties.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Tougher laws on UK alcohol imports

Hauliers to pay to drive on UK roads

Anyone trying to bring drink home for Christmas from the UK will find it more difficult after the British Government gave the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) more power to tackle alcohol fraud. Any person caught in possession of alcohol when leaving the UK can be assessed on whether they will have to pay duty on the products. Thousands of Irish people head up north every year to stock up for the Christmas, but now they may find it more difficult to do so. However, the UK Warehouse Association (UKWA) revealed that this could be the death knell for a lot of businesses, who would be fined if found guilty of such an offence. “If you are holding goods suspected of being duty unpaid, HMRC can detain and seize the goods and refuse to restore them, meaning the overall cost of those goods becomes a loss, in addition to losing the physical stock. "What is more, HMRC can also make an assessment for any and all stock put through a business that it believes to be duty unpaid,” explained Alan Powell, of Alan Powell Associates, the UKWA’s advisor on excise duty. “In essence, if you touch ‘suspect’ goods in the course of your business, you will be deemed to be ‘contaminated’ and liable to penalties and the full duty.”

Hauliers travelling throughout the UK will be paying for the privilege of driving on the roads by 2014, a move that has been welcomed by the FTA. Most European countries already have road user charging schemes and Britain is expected to follow suit with a number of contingency plans already being mooted. Simon Chapman, Chief Economist at the FTA said: “It is essential that the Department for Transport (DfT) does not let the grass grow underneath the manifesto commitment to introduce lorry road user charging. “This early indication of the development and implementation timeline is welcome. Industry will need to be fully engaged in the development of the charging scheme and associated tax compensation mechanism for UK carriers. “However, the plan must not be allowed to slip, and as a result leave the scheme vulnerable to political priorities in the immediate run-up to the next general election.”

Drivers to have speed checked at least six times a year The introduction of 15 new speed cameras at 760 locations across the country will mean that every vehicle user in Ireland can expect to have their speed checked at least six times a year. From midnight on Monday 15th November, the mobile speed vans came into operation and such was the interest as to where the speed cameras would be located that the garda website, which has a list of the places designated, crashed. Donegal has the largest number of sites at 63 and it is followed by Cork (62 sites), Meath (52), Wexford (44) Tipperary (40), Waterford (38), Louth (36), Cavan and Limerick (both 35), Kilkenny (28), Kildare and Roscommon (27), Laois (26), Clare (25), Galway (24), Kerry and Westmeath (22), Carlow and Wicklow (20), and Dublin, Longford and Offaly (19). Counties with the least sites are Sligo (6), Leitrim (8), Mayo (16 ) and Monaghan (17). Motorists can update their sat-nav software to include the locations around the country, but if they are caught speeding they will receive two penalty points and when they reach 12, an automatic suspension will be incurred. The vans, clearly marked with speed check signs, will operate day and night, 24 hours a day in all types of weather. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Logistic firm calls for change One of the world’s leading logistics’ firms DHL believes that if certain areas of DHL are calling for change in international certain areas of international trade trade were changed, it would save money and decrease transit times. The administrative burden on companies is slowing the whole industry down, while also adding unnecessary expense to businesses, according to DHL Global Forwarding CEO Hermann Ude. “As a result, paperwork can be the single most time-consuming element in the life of a shipment, with vital days lost and costs increasing, as products spend more time in warehouses than on the move.” He said it currently took 60 days to move an ocean freight shipment from India to Mexico – but, typically, only more than half of the time from order to delivery was wasted in arranging export and import documentation and customs clearance,” said Ude. “BRIC countries carry out 10 times more physical cargo inspections than best-in-class countries. In Singapore, for example, 95% of shipments are cleared automatically, using ecustoms systems, compared with just 5% in China and none in Russia, Brazil and India. “The way forward is through improved intelligence, not sole reliance on physical security measures. Information sharing, facilitated by stronger collaboration between businesses, industries and public authorities, needs to take place to make our world safer,” said Ude. “A 30% improvement is a big ambition, but one that governments, shippers and service providers such as DHL can jointly achieve, and must work towards achieving if countries are to enjoy continued economic success and rising standards of living. “If regulators decrease bureaucracy and become more processorientated, logistics companies work consistently to reduce costs and improve lead times and shippers form deeper partnerships with logistics providers, emerging market growth will stay on track.”

More expense for hauliers The four-year National Recovery plan will see carbon tax doubled from its current price of €15 per tonne to €30 per tonne leading to extra expense on the already struggling haulier. The carbon tax was introduced in the last budget, but over the next four years it will double and government officials believe that it will save €330 million to its overall savings. The Government has outlined that the increase will come by the way of a €10 increase in 2012 and a further €5 in 2014 bringing it up to the level that they want. The haulage industry have suffered a number of setbacks already this year and while the carbon tax is a blow, so to is the increase in VAT, which will make consumers buy elsewhere.

New road opens in West One of the last road projects of the year was officially opened as the Crusheen to Gort motorway will take half an hour off travelling times between Galway city and Shannon Airport. This latest motorway will be a huge boost to exporters sending cargo from Shannon Airport, while it is also expected to remove up to 10,000 cars from Gort on a daily basis. The new road built by SIAC/ Wills Bros joint venture will remove 8,000 to 10,000 cars from Gort daily and is expected to reduce travel time between Galway and Limerick by 20 minutes during peak hours. Transport Minster Noel Dempsey said the new road scheme "is a very, very good example of the positives in the country that we don't hear half enough about on a day-to-day basis".

New deal boost for Irish exports Enterprise Minister Batt O’Keeffe has revealed that a new deal to lift trade barriers could benefit Irish exports by as much as Eur16 billion. The Irish government is currently in the process of signing of regulations that will give effect to the services directive here in Ireland, which will make it easier for businesses and consumers to buy services in the single market. Last year alone, Central Statistic Office figures state that Irish exports were Eur67 billion and through the new law this could rise by Eur13-16 billion a year. The Enterprise Minister Batt O’Keeffe objective of the directive is to release the untapped growth potential of services markets in Europe by removing legal and administrative barriers to trade in the services sector. The simplification measures in the regulations will facilitate trade between businesses and for consumers in the single market by removing administrative and legal barriers.

Quarry firm goes into liquidation A provisional liquidator has been approved and appointed by the High Court to a quarry firm in Co Roscommon. The current economic climate is still playing havoc within the construction industry and other sectors connected to it including quarries and this is certainly not the first to go down this route, while unfortunately it probably won’t be the last. Hanly Brothers Ltd operated a quarry in Elphin, Co Roscommon where 45 people were employed, but following their failure to keep up with their repayments, the High Court Judge Ms Justice Mary Laffoy appointed Mr Tom Kavanagh of Kavanagh Farrell as provisional liquidator. The company with a registered address at Laragan, Drummullin Elphin Co Roscommon has carried out quarrying at the site since 1972. It provided materials mainly to local authorities and contractors in counties Roscommon, Longford, Leitrim. At is peak in 2007 it employed some 125 people and had a turnover of more than Eur17m.

NI firm wins shipping contract A company based in Co Antrim has announced that it has signed a deal with a shipping firm believed to be worth in the region of £6.5 million. Mivan specialises in construction work and it also have a cruise ship division where it concentrates on fitting out and upgrading the vessels. The company's director of business development, Stephen Mills, said: "We also have some repeat business with Princess Cruises, involving a major refurbishment on the Grand Princess, also in the Bahamas. It's a very demanding schedule, with a lot of work to be carried out in a two to three week period."

TPN to create new jobs with launch of Logistics Division TPN (The Pallet Network), Ireland’s leading freight and transport service provider, has announced that it will create more than a dozen new jobs over the next 18 months at its new logistics division in Blanchardstown. TPN is the first pallet network in Ireland to expand into logistics services and the company has invested over €100,000 in new technology and infrastructure for its new logistics service offering, called TPN Hub Site Logistics. Owen Cooke, Chairman, The Pallet Network (TPN), said, “The new logistics division will create five jobs immediately and at least seven additional jobs within 18 months. 2009 was one of the most difficult years for the transport sector in Ireland as prices for moving cargo tumbled and volumes dropped with the reduced economic activity, but TPN focused on becoming as lean as possible and this has allowed us to invest in our logistics division, which will offer new and existing customers the opportunity to have a variable cost for warehousing and distribution, which is the only way to operate in these challenging times.” The new Hub Site Logistics division will be located adjacent to TPN’s transport hub in Blanchardstown and will have a capacity for 5,000 pallets. It is expected to have a turnover of €500k within its first year, with this figure rising to €1 million in its third year. TPN and Independent Express Cargo Ltd, part of the Independent Express Group, reported a combined turnover of €17 million for 2009. The transport group has further reported a 15% increase in activity for 2010. Independent Express Group employs 50 people at its €10 million 100,000 sq ft hub in Blanchardstown. TPN have already secured a number of clients for the logistics division as well as entering into a new joint venture with UK company, Atlantic Pacific Global Logistics, to provide a logistics service for its customers wishing to serve the Irish market. “TPN is always developing the services we offer our clients and we now have the complete supply chain solution for our customers. The logistics division will have import containers come direct to our site from the port, we strip them down, store the pallets and cartons and then pick orders as required for distribution throughout Ireland,” says Cooke. “A €50,000 investment in a new custom designed warehouse management system will eradicate manual checking, by scanning all movements in and out of the warehouse. In addition, it can give our clients 100% visibility and access to their product movements via a web based virtual warehouse application.” TPN Hub Site Logistics will be targeting Irish based distributors, manufacturers, retailers and internet based businesses that need their goods shipped from source, stored, picked and delivered. Owen Cooke added, “We are now able to receive orders as late as 17:00 for picking that night and distribute the next day through the national TPN network of 23 regional members. This will be key for those at home and abroad that need a reliable, efficient and value for money logistics service.”

SDC Trailers offers customers certified body structure SDC Trailers has successfully completed full structural testing on a curtainsider and boxvan trailer to comply with the EN12642XL standard. From today, SDC can offer their customers the option of strengthened body structure certified to EN12642XL which confirms the quality and build strength of their trailers (up to an internal height of 3200mm). The testing was carried out by TUV-NORD over a three day period at SDC’s site in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Every SDC trailer built with the EN12642XL standard will have a TUV-NORD decal on the front and rear bulkhead. The customer will also be issued with a TUV-NORD certificate showing the approval number and the trailer chassis number. Due to the increased material added to strengthen the body of the trailer, there will be an additional cost to add this function but it will save customer’s time and money in the long run. When driving a vehicle throughout Europe, the police regularly stop and check loaded vehicles, however, if the vehicle has an EN12642XL decal on front and rear – they are less likely to be stopped as they are shown to be compliant with the minimal structural body strength standard. Although there are no current plans for EN12642XL to become legislation in the UK or in Europe, more and more customers (such as the chemical and paper industries) are specifying that trailers carrying their goods must be to this specific standard. SDC have seen a noticeable increase in the number of customers specifying for this to be added to their trailers. TUV-NORD carry out the tests by applying loads to the body structure using a series of steel frames attached to the trailer floor. These frames have air bags attached to them that are linked together. Air pressure is then applied to the bags which is equivalent to the maximum load that can be applied to the side wall/curtains, front and rear walls for each test. The load is applied for 5 minutes and measurements taken whilst the load is applied. The pressure is then released and measurements are taken to see if any permanent deformation has taken place. As the tests were completed in the UK, SDC were able to test trailers to a higher internal height than they would have been able to on the continent (3200mm). Both types of SDC Trailers passed the TUV-NORD tests well within the limits set out in the EN12642XL standard.

Container volumes weaken September figures show a decrease in container volumes

P&O not interested in SeaFrance P&O are not bidding for SeaFrance

The volume of European container traffic for September weakened, although the overall third quarter figures are higher than the same period last year. Figures released from Container Trade Statistics (CTS) reveal that imports from Asia have dropped by 10% from August to September, but imports to Europe remain slightly higher than last year. Exports have shown a slight improvement also in Europe, but have dropped in Asia by 0.5% and the reports suggest that the overall outlook is optimistic. “We should note, however, that third-quarter exports of 1.34 million teu were 1.4% up on the figure for the period in 2008. The monthly rate of growth in third quarter imports from Asia continued to decline year-on-year, but third quarter 2010 as a whole was a significant 14.5% up on 3Q 2009,” says the report.

Despite reports to the contrary, P&O has confirmed that it will not be making a bid for troubled cross-channel operator SeaFrance. However, a spokesman for P&O did reveal that the shipping firm had being initially interesting in purchasing SeaFrance that interest has now evaporated. “It isn’t so much [that we are] pulling out of the running, as confirming we’re not in the running, as the deadline for bids approaches,” said the spokesman. “We can’t see how it would enhance our business. We’ve got our own purpose-built new ships on the way, so have no need for SeaFrance capacity. It would be a considerable challenge, and risk, to try to integrate SeaFrance into this organisation.” There are now believed to be four companies still interesting in buying SeaFrance and they are thought to be Brittany Ferries, Véolia, LD Lines and Eurotunnel with bids being announced later this month.

Recovery rebate to be offered by Rotterdam port Customers paying sea and inland harbour dues at the Port of Rotterdam will now be able to avail of a recovery rebate in order to help companies through the current economic crisis. A three per cent rebate will be offered to customers and it will be greatly appreciated by companies that have been struggling in recent times. Most companies are represented by Deltalings, an association that represents the concerns of logistic companies using the port and they are they only ones that can avail of the rebate. Wim van Sluis, Chairman of Deltalings, said: “The port authority shows an open eye to the fact that companies are still recovering from the enormous crisis, and that the revenues are not yet at the old level.” Association Chairman Piet Hoogerwaard added: “This general recovery rebate offers our customers the possibility to retain improved results or to limit losses. It also contributes to the consolidation of the improved market share of the port of Rotterdam.” Any vessel that docks at the port of Rotterdam must pay harbour dues, but now they can reclaim some of that expense through this new incentive.

Ferries group in the black

Fleet change following companies’ merger The announcement that Greencore and Northern Foods are to merge and become Essenta Foods will see an overhaul of both companies fleets. Both companies have a number of refrigerated trucks on the road and following the merger, the design and paintwork will have to be changed at great expense. The merger will save about €40 million per annum, while Greencore’s CEO Patrick Coveney admitted that the new company made much more sense in the long run. “It creates a substantial chilled prepared food company in fast growing categories in the UK, which is enhanced by strong branded positions in biscuits and frozen food. The investment case is underpinned by tangible cost synergies and the platform for further growth in the UK, Ireland and the US,” he said. “The time is right for both companies to build a real 'better than both' business and I look forward to bringing together the teams from Greencore and Northern Foods to deliver on this opportunity.

According to NCB Stockbrokers, the nine percent rise in earnings by the Irish Continental Group is ‘a solid statement in a challenging market.’ In the ferries division, the growth trends in the first half continued in Q3 with higher passenger numbers that rose by 5.9% that also resulted in better yields. NCB’s John Sheehan said: "This is a solid statement in a challenging market. Cash generation remains consistently high, with projected free cash flow of €37.6m in 2010 representing a yield of 10%. Capital expenditure needs remain minimal and this level of profitability and balance sheet underpins the 6.7% yield. The stock trades on 12.8 x 2010 EPS and we maintain our buy stance."

Dempsey hints at toll increase

Increased toll charges may provide road funding

In what seems to be a daily occurrence, the haulage industry could be set for another blow as Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey indicated that roads funding may be raised through an increase in toll charges. The National Roads Authority have put forward a new tolling system for national roads, which is currently being considered by Government officials. Once the current budget is spent their will be little or no funding for any road projects, but Dempsey admitted that an increase in toll charges was a distinct possibility. "We do not and will not have the same funding available for maintenance or repair of roads as we had over the past decade,” he said. “That is why this is being considered," he said. "At this point, however, no decisions have been made."

Large firms criticised over late haulage payments The late payment to haulage operators that is rife in the industry is now unacceptable, according to a leading hauliers’ association. The UK Road Haulage Association (RHA) has revealed that it is currently discussing the matter with the Departments of Business and Transport and it is hoped that something can come from the talks. Late payment to hauliers is now considered unacceptable as overheads must be met and credit limits are now almost a thing of the past. RHA Director of Policy Jack Semple said: “Hauliers are reporting what appears to be flagrant abuse by large customer companies of what is an unequal commercial relationship. We have seen companies take payment holidays at the expense of suppliers before, in order to strengthen their year-end balance sheet. “This appears to be rife in the construction sector at present, and we are asking the government to make it crystal clear to the companies involved that such behaviour is unacceptable – particularly if they wish to continue involvement in public sector projects.”

Container shipping rates continue to fall For the 18th consecutive week, global container shipping rates have continued to fall, raising further concern within the industry. Rates on services to the US west coast also slid $43, to reach $2,159 per teu, and services to the east coast were down $98 to $3,459 per teu. Analysts at the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) said: “The demand in European services didn’t show any signs of recovery this week, and the capacity available on the market was still in over-abundance. “Yet despite the excessive capacity, carriers didn’t seem to lower the price; while some of them were poised to cut capacity in order to regain market equilibrium. The SSE added: “It seems North America was also impacted by a similar predicament in Europe and the Mediterranean, as surplus capacity remains. “In addition, the fourth quarter has always been a slack season for the box shipping industry, so the freight rate was expected to maintain the slump trend.”

Insurance company to create 40 jobs Galway based RSA Insurance Ireland Limited is set to expand it employee base at its premises in Ballybrit following the creation of 40 new jobs. The jobs will be aimed at supporting the servicing of RSA’s Personal Insurance customers across the country and it is hoped that all the vacancies will be filled by June, 2011. Business development and customer care activities are the main areas that the company is keen to strengthen and they are looking with experienced people. RSA Insurance Ireland Limited has 150 people already working in its Galway facility, while they have 750 in total employed throughout the country. RSA Insurance Ireland chief executive, Philip Smith, said: "Regionally, Galway is an important operational and customer service hub for RSA and directly supports the achievement of our business objective.”

New container vessels on the rise The demand for new build container vessels has risen for the first time in two years giving belief that the economic recession is loosening its grip. The order book for containership rose significantly in October according to analyst AXS Alphaliner following a total of 27 months in decline. An increase in new orders and more container work is the main reason for the rise in container manufacturing, although Alphaliner stressed in a statement that it will take the industry some time to return to normal. “Even lower delivery figures are expected throughout the fourth quarter, coinciding with the slower winter period. “Further containership orders are expected before the end of the year. There is significant latent demand for new ships, as owners rush to place orders after having shied away from the yards for almost two years.” It added: “Since the order book peaked at 6.89 million teu in August 2008, it has been in continuous decline due to a combination of poor market sentiment and a lack of access to funding. “This situation only started to change in June, prompted by the recovery in the freight market.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Dublin waste disposal to cost Eu40 million

Calls for scrappage scheme extension

The cost of sending waste from two of Dublin’s local authorities to Cavan and Kildare will be a massive Eur40 million, although this figure would be much less if the Poolbeg incinerator was up Huge cost incurred for transporting Dublin’s waste and running. Council chiefs have revealed that the disposal of waste would cost each local authority Eur20 million as Dublin City Council and South Dublin Co Council awarded contracts to Oxygen and Bord na Mona to dispose of their waste. Both councils had planned for Poolbeg to be opened by now, but its future is still up in the air after the company that are behind the project threatened to pull out unless they got more government backing. Dublin City Council's statement said that Oxygen will treat up to 25,000 tonnes of the waste between January and June 2011 and use 30% as landfill cover, with the remaining 70% going to a landfill in Corranure, Co Cavan. Bord na Móna has been awarded a similar six-month contract and will dispose of up to 120,000 tonnes of waste at Drehid landfill in Co Kildare.

The motor industry has called on the government to extend the scrappage scheme by a further six months following a huge rise in the sale of new vehicles this year. Car and light commercial dealers have suffered hugely due to the economic downturn over the past two years, but the introduction of the scrappage scheme has been a massive boost to the industry. A report reveals that over 3,000 jobs have been created in the car industry due to the scheme and the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) released a statement urging the government to continue with the scheme "A continuation of scrappage for a very limited period through the key selling season of January to June would copperfasten the recovery of businesses and employment in the sector," SIMI said in their pre-Budget submission published yesterday. Over 83,000 cars have already been sold this year and sales are expected to top 87,000 by the end of December, compared with just 57,118 in 2009

Dublin traffic emissions exceed EU limit

EU limit exceeded by Dublin traffic

A report by the Environmental Protection Agency has revealed that toxic emissions from traffic in Dublin city centre at peak times exceeded the EU limit. The Air Quality in Ireland 2009 report found that while air quality across the Republic was “generally good” and complied with EU standards, there remained a “concern” about the level of vehicle-generated emissions in Dublin and Cork. The report said nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels, which are strongly associated with traffic pollution, were high in Dublin and Cork city centres and exceeded the recommended EU limit of 40 microgrammes per cubic metre at one monitoring station at Winetavern Street, Dublin. Agency programme manager Dr Micheál Lehane warned the increased levels of NO2 observed in Dublin and Cork showed the need to reduce the environmental impact of traffic. “Vehicle emissions technology has undoubtedly decreased the impact of individual vehicles, but any benefits have been

offset by an increase in the number of vehicles,” he said. Despite a sharp downturn in car sales and a fall-off in employment last year, there was more traffic on the city’s roads, according to Dublin City Council. A spokesman said the annual cordon count, counting vehicles crossing the canal ring into the city centre, was to get under way this month. It was unclear whether traffic volumes would be down for 2010.

Laundered diesel found in North A raid by customs officials and police has uncovered thousands of litres of laundered diesel at two fuel plants located in County Armagh. The operations were carried out on the Moy Road and in the Culloville area and combined they had the capacity of producing 13 million litres of diesel a year. Revenue and Customs’ Mike Connolly said: “Fuel laundering is unregulated and dangerous. The by-products from the laundering process can cause severe damage to the environment with taxpayers and local ratepayers having to pay for the clean-up and disposal costs. “This contaminated fuel could have been transported anywhere across Northern Ireland, endangering other road users. We continue to work closely with our colleagues in the Organised Crime Task Force (OCTF), including the PSNI to stop the damage this criminal activity causes, both to our communities, to local businesses and the environment.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Truckfest provides relief The Northwest Truckfest show was held over the course of the August Bank Holiday weekend and such was the success of the event that plans for next year's show are already underway.

T

o say it has been a tough time for the haulage industry would be a massive understatement as many would state that they have never experienced rougher times in the sector. Cuts in rates, and rises in fuel and insurance have contributed to make it a recession to remember for all the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, the current economic climate has claimed many victims in the industry and it is a time when there is little to cheer about. Rogue operators have also been a hindrance to the industry as prices are being cut to the bone leaving some hauliers bewildered by how competitors can actually work for so little. The market has shrunk considerably and it is a time when any wrong decision could prove very costly indeed as caution is the best approach to take. However, on the August Bank Holiday weekend, truckers were afforded the opportunity to forget their troubles for a few days at least and unwind as the Northwest Truckfest took place. Truck Shows in Ireland have been few and far between over the years, certainly ones of the qualities that Northwest Truckfest produced earlier this year. A lot of intricate planning went into the event and it certainly paid dividends, if the feedback is anything to go by. Event organisers admitted that the show was deemed a massive success by all who attended and before truckers left Milford where the show was held, they were asking was their going to be an event next year and the answer to that question is a resounding yes! As well as all the trucks on display, which travelled from all over the Northwest and as far a field as Co Wexford and the UK, there was live music, a fun fair and displays the event. A full judging event took place and there was a bar and beer garden for patrons to unwind, while musical IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

entertainment was provided over the course of the weekend. A fully equipped restaurant catered for all the hungry patrons, while there were numerous children's attractions, trade stands and many giveaways to make it a fun filled weekend. Truckers love showing off their pride and joy and the care and attention that is given to some lorries is astonishing to say the least, so why shouldn't they be afforded the luxury of picking up a prize for having such eye-catching vehicles. Without question, 2010 was a tough year for the haulage industry with many businesses struggling to survive during the economic downturn, but the aim of Northwest Truckfest is to look ahead to 2011 with optimism and a renewed spirit. The spirit of competition that manifests itself at these shows can be as intense as any sporting contest. The fevered brow of competitors just before the trucks are looked at and the inevitable post mortems that take place later are all part and parcel of these events. The banter that accompanies these events is an essential ingredient. So too is the praise and admiration that is heaped on the various winners. And where there are winners, there must be losers and the promise to come back next year with a winning entry. Each year, the event raises money for various charities and this years proved no different as everyone contributed generously to the worth causes. Every trucker at the event takes great pride in their trucks and that was evident with the standard of truck that attended the show, all of which were in pristine condition. Great care and attention to detail are put in to each truck and it is a huge credit to the drivers that they place such an emphasis on ensuring that the truck looks the part. There is already talk of next year's show and the hundreds of truckers that attended this year went off in the knowledge that they will be back for the fifth annual Northwest Truckfest in 2011.

over the years, it's a testament to the hard work and efficient service that they have provided. We speak to Ian about how they have sustained the firm and he tells us about the way the company has been able to diversify into other areas of haulage, depending on the work out there. The current economic climate has put many businesses under pressure, some of which, unfortunately have been forced to close down. However, Ian Hayes Haulage are one of the lucky ones as they have a reliable repeat customer base that has been built up through years of hard work and efficient service. Specialising in the transport of bulk cement, Ian and his team of employees operate out of the Quinn Cement plant in Derrylin and draw dry powder cement to his biggest customer, Creagh Concrete, Toome Bridge. They also carry out a lot of curtainsider work as well as hauling salt for Salt Sales, Carrickfergus, to various council depots, North and

South. To provide all these services, Ian Hayes Haulage has a wide range of trucks on the road, which are all kept in pristine condition and well maintained. Ian admits that business has slowly being creeping back to the level it was a number of years back, but he has been around long enough to know how to get through these tough times that have affected everyone in the country. “Things are not too bad at the moment and we're pleased enough with the amount of work that he have ongoing at the moment. I suppose it's the same for most companies, who hopefully have seen the back of the recession. It is hard to know when the economy will pick up again, but I think it will be the same for the rest of the year. We just have to tighten our belts and get on with it. We're fortunate to have a loyal customer base that has supported us down through the years, explained Ian. “This business is hard enough to compete in without extra problems. The price of diesel has risen considerably, while the rates have gone down if anything and this has IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

certainly not helped the industry. It is a continuous struggle to keep our heads above water and it is imperative that something is done about this in the very near future.” Ian admits that his job is made that bit easier by the fact that he has a hard working staff on the books, some of who have been with him for many years. He can also call on the support of his wife Florence and son Lloyd, both of whom are involved in the day to day running of the business for many years. “There are eight drivers employed here and I must say that they are all very good at their jobs. A few of them have been with me for many years and it helps everything to run a lot smoother when you have such experienced drivers on the road. “They have built up a good rapport with the customers and I generally keep the same drivers working with the same customers as they have come to trust them.” Having built the fleet up to 15 trucks, due to the recession the fleet has been reduced to 10. Maintenance is a key part of the business and to this end, Ian revealed that his own mechanics look after all repair work. “We keep the trucks well maintained as the last thing you want is for a lorry to break down on the side of the road. Downtime is something that we strive to avoid. Our customers want a prompt and efficient service and we aim to provide that.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Bulk transport is a speciality

With almost 30 years experience in the industry and having built up such a substantial customer base, Ian Hayes Haulage looks set to be around for some time to come through the good times and bad. “We still have the majority of the customer base that we have had for many years. We've placed a great emphasis on maintaining what we have and holding on to that.

“We have a very good working relationship with all our customers and as long as that continues then I can see no reason why anything would change. “Being involved with such reliable companies is a major help at this time. They have a good reputation and we'd like to think that we have a good one too. We're focusing more on the customers and their needs. Hopefully that will us through the current economic climate.”

On the one road Offaly-headquartered company Callington Limited specialises in road recycling and stabilising. This novel approach to road repairs provides a cheaper and faster solution that is environmentally-friendly, affording the client significant savings over traditional methods. Irish Trucker spoke to Callington’s operations manager Martin Conneally about the innovative technique.

R

oad recycling is an interesting concept that makes perfect sense, not just from a financial point of view but also in terms of saving time and protecting the environment. Callington Ltd. is an independent Irish company offering this service to local authorities and private contractors, ensuring that any surface in ill repair can be transformed into a new road with the minimum of expense. The process essentially entails ripping the existing road and crushing the exposed materials before compacting and re-tarring the new surface, which is now as good a new road. Because the existing road is being re-used, there is literally zero

waste. The work can be carried out on any existing road that needs to be upgraded and – as tarmacadam contractors – Callington limited can see the project through from start to finish, providing a complete solution. Based at Ballykilmurray, Tullamore, County Offaly, Callington Ltd. was established by John Drea over 20 years ago. John still oversees the business today, ensuring that Irish roads can be overhauled without any

road and put a crusher through it, reshape it and re-tar it. This leads to substantial savings in terms of materials and you can do it without removing any of the existing road. We also do tarmacadam for roads, driveways, house fronts, car parks, games areas and industrial estates.” When did the owner of Callington decide to branch into this particular line of work? “We started about seven or eight years ago and we were the first Callington Ltd offers a nationwide service which is ideal for upgrading company in Ireland to do and repairing secondary routes it. tractors, four Bitelli planers, four road pavers, three Phoenix gritters, two tar sprayers and one combination unit. As we speak, they also have an exciting new piece of revolutionary machinery being designed on their behalf by local precision engineering company Arden Precision. This innovation model will be ready for launch soon and Martin confirms: “The machine that’s being designed at the moment has been under construction for 18 months and will completely revolutionise our business. It’s an allin-one unit that looks after the entire process after the road has been ripped. We have a big input into the design process and invest a great deal of money in this side of the business.” At present, between its various operations, Callington Ltd. directly provides gainful employment to 18 personnel as well as providing work indirectly to staff working in quarries etc. This is of huge value to the local economy as we all try to come to terms with the enormity of the ongoing economic downturn. When you also consider the savings being made on all Callington’s road recycling projects, the company’s value to the economy is magnified even further. As well as training its staff to the highest possible levels of professionalism, Callington Ltd. also places a keen emphasis on health and safety, as well as being an extremely environment-conscious operation. Regarding the future, Martin Conneally concludes: “The new machine will play a big part as we will be even better positioned to stabilise roads and add extra strength. The finish will be as strong as tarmacadam but at substantially less cost. We’re expecting this machine to be well received because there is already huge interest from engineers all around the country.

Callington’s road recycling process is growing increasingly popular

Best Wishes To Callington Ltd From

“The bottom line is that we offer county councils a much cheaper way of upgrading roads than the traditional methods and we’ll continue to offer this efficient and dependable service. Our clients save money, so we expect the demand for our service to remain constant.”

TIP Trailer Services has long been recognised as the market leader in trailer rental and leasing

A company traditionally specialising in trailer rental and leasing, TIP Trailer Services has expanded its services to include fleet advice, maintenance, telematics, insurance and other value-added solutions in recent times. Dublin branch general manager Michael Murphy explains more.

While rental and leasing still accounts for a large part of our business, we are now more of a services company. As already stated, the company’s four main services come under the following headings: Fleet Options, Fleet Care, Fleet Intelligence and Fleet Protect. Red hot Coldcut

Despite being in existence as a single entity for just over a year, Dublinbased Coldcut Logistics has quickly become one of the most sought-after hauliers in the specialist refrigerated freight sector. Directors Jim McGovern and Derek McGreal and Financial Controller James McGowan spoke to Irish Trucker.

W

hen the opportunity arose for Jim McGovern and Derek McGreal to formalise their partnership and bid for a major new transport contract with Glanbia in 2009, the pair quickly came to a decision that it made sense for their collective operations. Respectively an owner-operator and small company owner who had been working loosely in tandem for a couple of years, McGovern and McGreal had been conducting an amount of work for the international dairy organisation for some time, and when they were successful in the tendering process for the new contract, they opted to solidify

their alliance into the newlyincorporated Coldcut Logistics. That Glanbia contract saw Coldcut, as it was now, double its fleet size virtually overnight in 2009, to approximately 50 units including trucks, tractor units, refrigerated units, vans and trailers. Such growth represents a significant achievement given that the general trend in both the haulage industry and the wider business community pointed towards downsizing and consolidation. Speaking to Irish Trucker recently, the men behind the success of Coldcut Logistics outlined the sequence of events which brought

about the establishment of the company, a major new presence in the field of refrigerated haulage in Ireland. “We had been trading as McGovern & McGreal for a few years,” says Derek McGreal, “but to unify everything under one banner, and to get away from the perception that may have been out there that we were just a two-person operation, we decided to come up with a name for it and eventually settled on Coldcut Logistics. That sums up what we’re about, because we specialise in all refrigerated transport.” Jim McGovern adds: “Glanbia is our main client, and we operate out of IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Coldcut Logistics has become an easily recognisable presence on the roads of Dublin and north Leinster since coming into being last year

their warehousing bases in Drogheda and Ballytore on the Carlow road, carrying goods into warehouses in Dublin from where they’re distributed. If you’re in Dublin and you get a litre of milk at the hall-door, the chances are that Coldcut Logistics have been involved in distributing it.” With a staff of approximately 40 and an impressive headquarters at Slaney Close Industrial Estate in Glasnevin, things have clearly gone quite well for all involved with Coldcut Logistics during a difficult period for the economy at large. And while they insist it hasn’t all been plain sailing, the partners are pleased with the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

progress of the past 18 months, and they believe that the importance of projecting a professional image and presentation has played a key role in that growth. “Anyone that would say it isn’t tough would be telling a lie,” says McGovern. “It’s very tough out there, from the price of fuel to maintenance and everything else. It’s just a very difficult time to be involved in transport, and it’s not any different for us.” “Nevertheless,” McGreal continues, “we’ve still grown over the last year or so and things have gone fairly well for us. One of the things we decided to do early on was to get specialist livery on the lorry, which was won us awards and has in turn led to us getting a number of new clients on board. When you’re seen on the roads and in the market-place, it pays to have the image as good as you can make it, and the livery has helped us greatly in that regard. There has been a bit of interest in us, we’ve taken some phone calls enquiring about our services and we’ve picked up some business through it.” To that end, a trip to the National Ploughing Championships in September 2009 – the same month that Coldcut Logistics formally came into being – succeeded in adding another blue-chip name to the company’s client list. “Our van was down in Athy, where we were doing work for Glanbia,” says McGovern. “Jakult’s marketing manager was there, saw it and got in contact with us, and we ended up agreeing a contract with them for 2010. We made a lot of effort at the Ploughing Championships to bring the trucks and vans out every evening,

washing them down and having them spick and span again for the following morning. It pays to do things right. The image is all-important. Indeed Coldcut Logistics won the Livery of the Year at the Fleet Transport awards.” While Glanbia remains Coldcut’s major client, accounting for approximately two-thirds of the company’s business, McGreal and McGovern are constantly looking at ways to widen its reach and securing its future. With that in mind, plans are afoot to diversify into warehousing so that the company can offer the full transport and logistics package to its customers. “At the moment, we operate out of Glanbia’s warehousing for all our work for them, and for the other jobs, if we require warehousing, that’s something that we’d currently outsource,” says McGreal. “The aim, though, is to bring all that in-house over the next two years. We want to

The Coldcut operation is based at Slaney Close Industrial Estate in Glasnevin

Glanbia has been one of Coldcut’s principal clients since the company was incorporated in mid-2009

be able to offer clients the complete supply chain, so that we can go out and offer Glanbia or other companies the full package, where we’d pick up their product, store it ourselves and then deliver it to the market-place. We’ve done a good bit of homework on it, so we know what we have to do.” Talk of the future naturally brings us to the company’s technological infrastructure, and Coldcut is committed to maintaining state-of-theart computer systems. Company accountant James McGowan takes up the story: “Competitive edge is at the forefront of

everything and one of our key policies here is to develop our computer systems. The transport business is extremely competitive and the only way to compete is to try to keep up with the bigger companies in terms of computer systems. “We are very competitive from a cost point of view and we want to keep costs low while at the same time maintaining the highest standards. It’s a young, new company but we’ve built the infrastructure around us to develop our systems and the bottom line is to give the best possible price and the best quality of service.” McGovern continues: “With so many

movements every day, and lorries out in the middle of the night, we have to able to pinpoint all products at all times. For the purposes of customer satisfaction, if a lorry is delayed in any way, the latest information and estimated time of arrival is easily available at the click of a button or by giving the customer access to the website.” State-of-the-art technology, transparent procedures, exceptionally high standards and affordable prices have seen Coldcut Logistics forge to the front of the queue. And that’s just where they intend to stay.

Tony Boylan Transport: a reliable service Reliability is a key word within the haulage industry and all companies involved in the sector strive to provide a reliable service in order to survive in what is a very fickle business.

D

uring these current recessionary times, it is difficult for all businesses to stay going, but the haulage industry has been affected more than most. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile a company that has withstood the demands of the current economic climate and is facing into

42

adversity head on. Co Meath based Tony Boylan Transport Ltd was established in 2001 by the man in question and we speak to his son David about the business and how they have adapted to the trials and tribulations of everyday life in modern day Ireland. First we take a look at the history of

the company and how it came to be formed as David explains that his father was offered a deal that he couldn't turn down. “My father was involved with Pat Walsh Transport for many years and worked for them. When they decided to close the business, they asked my Dad was he interested in taking it over IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

and he was, so basically it originated from there,” said David. “We have had the same customer base since the start and probably one of the things that has kept us going is that we never got too big. We have five trucks and eleven trailers here and overheads are kept to a minimum and that has certainly helped us a lot.” Tony Boylan Transport Ltd operates from a premise at Primatestown, Ashbourne, just on the Dublin/Meath border and minutes from the M1 motorway and Dublin Port, meaning they have the ideal location to provide their services. “We specialise in bulk transport and generally haul oil and food grade for the likes of Largo Foods, Lakeland Dairies, Glanbia and Abbotts. We would have ongoing contracts with them since we started and we have a good working relationship with all of them. “Basically, we would draw oil from Dublin Port and we would sometimes bring it back here where we have steaming facilities that ensures the oil does not get too thick. We would transport different types

of oil, but all The company has been would be used established nine years for foodstuffs.” Tony Boylan Transport Ltd have all the proper legislation to carry out their daily routine and this includes Hazchem licences for all their drivers. “There is plenty of legislation to be followed in this industry, especially when you're hauling liquids like oil. So it is important to make sure everything is in order as all loads are monitored.” David is the general manager of the business, while Tony is the managing director and his wife Terry is a Secretary and director of the company, but it is not just confined to a father and son role as another brother Robert is a full time driver, while another brother Ciaran, and sister

Caoimhe all work part time to make it a very much family run business. Asides from the bulk tanker work, Tony Boylan Transport Ltd also provide container work for some companies and David admitted that providing a reliable service was the key to success in any business. “That is something that we always

look to improve. If we weren't reliable and were breaking down all the time and late with deliveries then our customers would just go elsewhere, it's the nature of the business that we're in. “It is up to us to ensure that the customer is satisfied with the service that we provide. The trucks and trailers are maintained by the main dealers that we buy them off and they are kept in good condition. We would have a fairly modern fleet consisting of four Scanias and one Volvo and we are looking to expand that next year. We have recently bought two new trailers, which are bigger that the ones we currently have and will allow us to transport larger loads, which will be more cost effective for us and our customers. David pointed out that moving with

those companies that are built on a the times was essential to the future of solid foundation and what you see is the business and it was something what you get with this Meath based that they are willing to do. firm. “You just have to keep freshening For further information contact David things up; otherwise you will be left @ 01-8354048. behind. The tyre equipment specialists

Techplus is Ireland’s leading supplier of tyre and garage equipment

Techplus Ltd is Ireland’s leading supplier of tyre and garage equipment. Managing director Brian O’Neill, who is due to take up the presidency of the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) in January, explains more.

S

ince its establishment in 1993, Techplus Ltd has become known as Ireland’s foremost supplier of tyre and garage equipment, having built its reputation on its range of quality products, expertise and customer support. Based in South City Business Park, Tallaght, Dublin 24, the company has grown each year and stocks top brands of equipment for industry leaders such as Tech International, Snap-on Equipment (including John Bean and Hofmann), Rotary, Werther International, Haweka, Teseo, Italmatic, Abco, Future and Pasquin. Techplus’ product range includes alignment systems, lifts, jacks and axle stands, compressed air systems, compressors, brake testers and test lanes, exhaust extraction systems, tyre changers, tyre equipment, tyre repair materials and wheel balancers. The company also provides a training centre where you can receive training on wheel alignment, tyre changers, wheel balancers and beam setters IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

with the training sessions being carried out by qualified engineers. Workshop layout and design is another service offered by Techplus. “We’re recognised throughout the industry as the leading suppliers of tyre and garage equipment,” Techplus managing director Brian O’Neill proudly states. “We stock only the best brands and have customers all over Ireland. Indeed, we have sales representatives servicing the 26 counties. We do a complete package for automotive workshops. Anything to do with the wheel, whether it’s for a motor cycle or earth mover, we have the equipment for it.” A native of Dublin, Brian heads up Techplus along with sales director Hugh Brady, who hails from Oldcastle, Co. Meath but now lives in Virginia, Co. Cavan. Between them, they have 60 years’ experience in the industry with Brian having been in the business since 1969. The company employs 12 staff and has a fleet of six vans which

are divided between sales and servicing. Having spent many years at Motor City on the Kylemore Road, Techplus relocated to a 5,000 sq ft state-of-theart premises in Tallaght four years ago. Comprising two units, including a spacious showroom, the premises is situated close to the M50 and is therefore easily accessible to all parts of Ireland. The company’s experienced sales team is supported by factory-trained service engineers for after sales service. Techplus offers a full after sales service to include calibration, equipment, servicing, workshop and layout design through its team of sales and service engineers. Techplus handles the full range of top brands for Tech International among others. Headquartered in Johnstown, Ohio and founded in 1939, Tech International is the world’s leading producer of tyre and tube repairs and wheel service solutions. The company sells more than 5,000

45

products in 110 countries throughout the world and is recognised as one of the top exporters in the US. During its 70 years in operation, Tech International has remained in the ownership of the Chambers family. Techplus are also distributors for Snap-on Equipment who market an extensive range of equipment for car and commercial vehicle service and collision damage repair. Products under the Hofmann and John Bean brands include brake and suspension testers, tyre changers, wheel balancers and wheel aligners, emission analysers and headlight testing equipment. Like most companies, Techplus hasn’t been immune from the recession, but if there has been upside, it’s the fact that more and more customers are switching back to the established brands stocked by the Dublin-based company. “During the boom years, a lot of cheaper products came into this country, but people soon realised that they were of a poor quality and have been coming back to us for our brands. They want to be sure they are getting the best value and the best product, and that’s where we can help,” Brian explains. “Of course, the temptation was there for us to stock cheap imports, but we decided not to go down that route, especially in heavier

equipment for health and safety reasons. It’s a good sign that people who tried the cheaper products are coming back to us now. What is also standing to us is our after sales service which has a reputation that’s second to none. “Over the years, we have established a tradition of value-for-money and total dedication to customer service.” In January 2011, Brian will hopefully assume the position of president of the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA). Currently vice-president, he will succeed Dave Naughton in the role. The ITIA’s aim is to improve communication between its 180-strong membership. By raising consumer awareness of tyre safety and highlighting the pitfalls of not using reputable tyre outlets, the Association aims to raise the profile of its members nationwide. The ITIA also makes representation to Government and relevant organisations on behalf of its members on key issues. They have a comprehensive set of member benefits, which can save your company money and help to keep costs down. The ITIA works as a voluntary executive council committee, which is representative of a cross section of the industry. The Association also has a number of sub-committees to deal in detail with areas of

ver the years, a large customer base has been added to the company's portfolio and this is not just confined to the shores of the Emerald Isle as it now includes different continents! Company director Mark McNally spoke to Irish Trucker for this month's edition of the magazine and he gave us an insight into the business, which is based in Dromintee, County Armagh. Housing a range of trucks from 3.5 tonne commercials to 80 tonne tractor units, M&M Trucks ensure to have plenty of choice for their customers

and in the eventuality that they might not, through their large source of contacts; they can guarantee to find that vehicle very quickly. Not only can M&M source any truck or trailer, but they also cater for some plant machinery, which has seen their customer base grow even greater over the years. Located between Newry and Dundalk, the M1 motorway is just minutes from the premises meaning that there is easy access for customers no matter what direction they are coming from. The number of trucks and plant

equipment sitting idle in yards around the country at the moment is frightening with some people being in the precarious position of still paying for the machinery. However, M&M Trucks Ltd export vehicles to far away places as Africa and Japan and Mark revealed that this is a major part of their business. “We specialise in the sourcing of vehicles, trailers and plant machinery from a number of contacts that we have throughout Ireland and the U.K. We deal mainly with Scania, MAN, Volvo, Mercedes and DAF trucks and can source them brand new, said IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

M&M Trucks Ltd was established in 1996 when Mark and his business partner Garry McArdle spotted an opportunity to set up on their own and they have never looked back since. “It was difficult enough when we first started, but once we built up a contact list for sourcing the vehicles, the business really began to take off and through word of mouth, we grew from there. As no one is buying new equipment the demand for second-hand goods has increased ten-fold. We are pleased with the way that the business is progressing as we are moving forward and hopefully we can continue to do so. “We source all trucks, plants and machinery ourselves, which means that we could be anywhere in Ireland

Mike was always keen to give the personal touch and over the next fifteen years, he and his family built up a large customer base, many of whom offered repeat business. At the time they also carried out puncture repairs and sold tyres on a small scale. Mike's youngest son Darren took a keen interest in the business. In 2005 the family sold the petrol station. Straight away, Darren set up an operation 'Gormanston Tyre

Centre' on the Mosney Road, which specialises in tyre sales. The business leveraged off the existing clientele and soon built up a reputation for friendly service, value for money and efficiency. They sourced a good network of suppliers and are renowned stockists of a wide range of the leading brands and sizes, all of which are competitively priced. This means that on the spot they can cater for any customer whether it be for a car, motorcycle, tractor or heavy goods vehicle. The business expanded its product

range to include a wide selection of alloys, brakes and exhausts in stock. In addition, they increased their services to include valeting, autoelectrical work and all major servicing. This includes clutches, timing belts, engine rebuilds pre-NCTs and preDOEs. However, Darren was keen to stress that regardless if a customer has 100 trucks or just wants one tyre on a car, everyone is treated the same when they bring their custom to Gormanston Tyre Centre. As well as catering for customers on the spot, Darren invested in an

'GT recovery' was established. That business purchased a seven and a half tonne Mercedes Atego 815 Tilt & Slide with spec lift, capable of transporting two vehicles. Later, GT Recovery purchased a seven and a half tonne MAN 8163 chassis cab, and this time fitted a tilt and slide body with a spec lift themselves. GT Recovery also has at its disposal an ISUZU DMax 4x4 crew-cab with a winching facility. This is especially useful as they are regularly called Gormanstown Tyre Centre employee out to the local beaches Simas Jokubaitis at work to rescue vehicles and aid stranded motorists. Darren and his team maintain the fleet themselves ensuring that all safety aspects are adhered to in the finest detail. Darren admitted that their location is key to their success. “Being based on the old N1 means that the M1 is highly accessible. If someone breaks down, Brian Teeling works on a Directory Enquiries give vehicle at the centre out our number for Meath, Louth and North Dublin. We can get to a customer in no time. For instance, yesterday I was called to Dundalk in the morning and could be there within half an hour. Later that day it was Ashbourne and that evening I did a recovery on the M50”. In May 2009 Darren established GT Crash Repair Centre. The business secured a unit in Keenogue Business Park, Julianstown which is close to the existing tyre centre. They set up a state-of-the art facility complete with a low-bake oven, computerised colour matching/paint mixing system and chassis alignment. All of these provide faster more efficient repair times as well as a top quality finish. “With any business, the tools can only do so much. I realised I couldn't oversee 100% of the work so I needed to have a reliable professional team. I secured an excellent bodyshop manager who was highly regarded in the locality.” In addition, Darren built a modern shop at the front of the unit which sells parts and accessories such as lubricants, car stereo systems, xenon headlight conversions, alarms, parking sensors and batteries. The shop also includes a sit-down waiting area and coffee/tea making facilities. GT Crash Repair Centre aims to take the hassle out of collisions. “We offer a professional service designed to look after the customers' needs with the minimum of fuss. We'll collect your vehicle, prepare an estimate, deal directly with the insurance companies and their assessors as well as providing a courtesy car. We will even give you a cup of coffee or tea to calm the nerves”. Gormanston Tyre Centre, GT Recovery and GT Crash Repair Centre between them employ seven full-time staff, each of whom is highly trained in their areas of expertise. Darren feels that the growth and success of the businesses are largely down to the huge contribution they make.

A-OK Longevity is one of the key to a successful business, especially during a time when Ireland has been left reeling from yet another recession that has gripped the nation and unfortunately sent many companies out of business.

T

he haulage industry in particular has taken the brunt of the current economic crisis and along with the construction sector; it has been decimated in the last two years. Higher fuel and insurance prices aligned with lower rates have combined to make it a tough industry to survive. However, for some companies like 'A' Transport, they have seen it all before. When Leslie Anderson first began transporting products for Bord na Mona in 1948, little did he realise that 62 years later, the company would be going as strong as ever. Since 1973, Leslie's son Roger took over the running of the business, while Leslie still to this day keeps a keen interest in the Athy based operation. The company has a lot of things going for it - offering a personal touch, excellent service, fully-trained staff and benefiting from an incredible degree of customer loyalty. These days, 'A' Transport works with a number of businesses that they have long term contracts with and indeed one of those is Bord na Mona, who they started out with all those years ago.

Based in Athy, the company operate a nationwide business

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

“My father, who I suppose you could say is a silent partner in the business these days started out working with Born na Mona and we still do work for them to this day,” revealed Roger. “We specialise in general haulage and we also have a Waste Collection Permit for Kildare and Dublin, which allows us to transport waste materials in these regions. We also have a long running association with Boortmalt formally Minch Malt also dating back to 1950's when we would have collected barley from local growers and delivered to the Maltings in Athy during harvest time. Since the early eighties we have been delivering Malt from Athy to the Guinness Brewery in Dublin'. Along with this 'A' Transport also deliver Smyth Toys products to their various outlets around the country as well as carrying out a large volume of work for ESC Containers, and others. With nine trucks on the road, eight DAFs and one Scania, maintenance is a key area and all of this is done by their own mechanic. “We do all our own maintenance work and ensure that the fleet is kept well maintained. This is an essential part of the business. The trucks and

trailers are serviced regularly in order to avoid any un-necessary breakdowns. “The advantage of running modern equipment is that you don't have breakdowns. Downtime in this business is crucial. Many of our trucks would be working in tandem with each other. You just could not afford to have trucks idle for a lengthy duration." 'A' Transport prides itself on having a relatively low turnover of staff. “A lot of the staff have been with us for many years, while many more would be with us for at least five years. We feel our staff are one of our biggest assets,” Roger explained. Throughout the company from administration to lorry operators to general operatives, they have an experienced, well trained and customer friendly staff intent on delivering high levels of customer service. “All our staff are equally important to us. They are all part of the same chain leading to a successful company and they have important roles to play with in the company,” he added. 'A' Transport has been able to expand into numerous areas that can all be pulled in under the loose

heading of general haulage. Of equal importance is the fact that this expansion has been achieved while complying with all relevant legislation governing the various sectors the company has entered. The Company has recently gone into refrigerated haulage to and from the UK and Europe and hopes to expand this side of the business as opportunities arise. “There is a core customer base that we work for and we're pleased with the way things are going at the moment. We have been with most of these companies for many years and as long as we can continue to provide the level of service that we have been providing, there is no reason why anything should change. “It's a very tough time for the industry and to be honest I've never seen it as bad. Renault’s southern force For the past 26 years, Waterford based H & H Motors have been supplying the Renault brand to a large customer base that covers the south east and further afield.

D

uring the current economic climate, the sales industry has struggled to cope with the downturn in the economy and unfortunately for some the strain became too much as a number of car dealers were forced to close down. For those that have survived, they have had to work hard to ensure that they provide the same level of customer satisfaction and H & H Motors have adapted accordingly, while through their experienced sales staff, they continue the trend of supplying quality vehicles to their large customer base. In this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile H & H Motors and take a look at their exclusive light commercial range that sees some new

models hitting the market this year. General Manager of H & H is Noel Doherty, who has many years experience in the industry, while Sales Manager Ken Rochford and Sales Executive Fred Deevy add to the knowledge that the company has of the industry. Fleet Manager Barry Teehan and Fred Deevy are experts on the light commercial side of the business, while the rest of the staff all play their part in the success of the business. Since being established in 1986, the business has gone from strength to strength and a sign of a well-run company is that amount of repeat custom that they have and on this level, H & H Motors are rivalled by very few.

Some of their customers have traded with them since the start such is the quality of service provided and from their location on the Butlerstown roundabout in Waterford, all customers are greeted with a friendly atmosphere. The modern purpose built premises exude an ambiance that instantly makes the customer feel at home and more importantly at ease in the knowledge that they will be well looked after. Customers can be guaranteed to be met with a friendly staff that will endeavour to deal with any enquiries and the highly trained employees will ensure that any concerns raised are alleviated. And this level of service doesn't stop

when the customer drives away in their new vehicle as their after sales team looks makes sure that they client is pleased with their purchase. The full range of Renault cars and light commercials are available, while their comprehensively stocked parts department means that vehicles will not be off the road for any longer than necessary. The service department specialises in the maintenance and repair of Renault vehicles. Other makes and models are also serviced in full accordance with particular manufacturers' recommendations. They provide a replacement vehicle facility and can assist you with insurance transfers while your vehicle is temporarily off the road. On completion of each service the vehicle will be cleaned and road tested. Three of the new models coming out in the light commercial range include the Kangoo, Master and Trafic vans, all of which have been earning rave reviews. The new Kangoo Van offers a range of engines adapted to the needs of all business uses. On the agenda: economics, security, robustness, reliability and environmental friendliness. The total cost of ownership of New Kangoo Van is the best on the market. Available in three different lengths and heights, the Master Van and High Volume versions provide usable volume of between 8 and 14 m3. Useful load can reach 1,600 kg.

Based on a single or crew cab (3- to 7- seater) chassis, the Master can adapt to specific loading requirements with a tipper and drop side version. The Master provides practically infinite possibilities for modification. The flooring and cab chassis provide the ideal base for creating a vehicle specifically adapted to your profession. The Trafic has been designed to meet the customers' everyday professional needs. Its new design is protective and elegant and comes with a range of powerful yet silent turbo diesel engines. Its technical equipment and its high level of comfort and safety are worthy of an MPV. Trafic also offers a wide range of made-to-measure commercial solutions with Panel Van, Crew Van, and Minibus versions to suit everyone's requirements. Asides from supplying top of the range new vehicles, H & H's second hand trade is very strong at the moment, despite the dwindling number of vehicles available on the market, due to the increasing interest. H & H has been at the forefront of its field of expertise for some time now and the aim of the company is to ensure they keep providing the same high standards. Even in the highly competitive light commercial industry, they are leading the way.

Corr strength Cross-border shopping is not limited to Sainsburys or Asda. Transport companies in the Republic of Ireland are flocking north of the border in their thousands to avail of the savings. Chris Corr, of Armagh tachograph and mechanical firm Corr Brothers, spoke to Irish Trucker.

T

he border retail phenomenon, which has seen thousands of southern shoppers cross the border for bargains in recent years, has been well documented. What is less well known is that cross-border value is not limited to Newry or Enniskillen or Derry. It is evident on all other aspects of business, and the Corr Brothers tachograph, mechanical, sales and servicing operation in south Armagh is one such success story. Founded in the mid-1970s by

brothers Gerard and Brendan Corr, whose day-to-day involvement remains undimmed more than three decades down the road, the company is now under the joint-ownership of Gerard’s sons Chris and Mick. While the company still offers a wide range of servicing, sales and second hand parts to its many and varied list of customers – “we try to keep our finger in as many pies as possible,” laughs Chris – the brothers take great pride in their tachograph operation,

which has grown from modest beginnings in the late ‘90s to become the country’s foremost manufacturer and retailer. Buying tachographs in bulk, as well as manufacturing, servicing and reconditioning the hardware on site, has given Corr Brothers the status of number one supplier of tachographs in the 32 counties. Contributing to that has been their ability to offer fantastic savings, with price reductions of more than €1000 in some cases compared

with competitors in some parts of the Republic. “The downturn affected us like it affected everybody,” says Chris, “but the tachograph thing has picked up a lot over the last while, and it’s really flying at the minute. We have an awful lot of customers in the Republic of Ireland, who are coming to us for tachographs because of the value we can offer. We buy them in huge quantities and we manufacture them ourselves, so we can beat nearly anybody on price. “It’s a big part of the business for us. We started into the tachograph end of things in 1996 or so, but we’ve really concentrated on it over the last five or six years. We invested quite heavily in stocking ourselves with huge quantities, so we can buy them for a lot less than our competitors can. We can supply to the trade too, to other tachograph providers who want to buy from us. There are a couple of yards now who’ve started to buy tachographs off us at trade prices, so it’s going well. It’s a very big thing for us at the minute.” With customers travelling the length and breadth of Ireland to attend to business at Corr Brothers, Chris acknowledges that the so-called “Newry effect” has also been noticeable in the mechanical and tachograph sectors. “We’ve seen a substantial increase in the number of customers we’re getting from across the border,” he says. “People mightn’t have travelled a big distance for tachographs and the like before but they’re doing it now – we’re getting people coming from as far away as Cork to fit tachographs in their trucks or buses. We’re beating some competitors’ prices by more than €1000 in some cases. The price of tachographs in certain parts of the country is unbelievable. We could be getting around 70 per cent of our custom at the moment from the south of Ireland. We’re only a couple of miles from the border, and there’s a big amount of hauliers around Monaghan and Castleblayney, and we find that a lot of those are coming to us. “The road network is probably a big factor

in getting people from a lot further away as well. They can tip up the road in a couple of hours now, whereas a couple of years back they couldn’t do that. There are a lot of hauliers travelling between Belfast and Dublin and we’re very accessible for them, and they’re getting a huge saving on price across the board – not just on tachographs but we also keep our labour costs to a minimum – so it’s worth their while to come. We don’t cut any corners, and never have.” Is there any possibility that the tachograph side of the business would swallow up the remainder of the Corr Brothers operation? “I don’t think that’ll happen,” says Chris. “We still focus very strongly on the mechanical end of things too. Our garage is busy, full six days a week. With the downturn, we’ve found that the customers we have are willing to spend a bit more on maintaining and servicing their vehicles because they can’t justify the spending required to upgrade their fleets. That’s something we’ve definitely seen – people are holding on to their older trucks a bit longer.” The Corr Brothers operation has received a facelift of sorts in recent years, with major investment in the company’s headquarters at Ballyards Road near Milford. “We’d been working in the old garage for 30 years but it’s been completely refurbished,” says Chris. “It used to be an old block building with a tin roof, whereas now we have insulated roof, insulated doors, a new concrete floor. It was a very cold place to work in the past but we have a very modern, up-to-date place now. It’s a big change for us. “We might have built it at a bad time because it was sort of at the height of the boom. But in a way we built it at a good time too – we had the money to do it at the time so we went ahead and did it. It was in the pipeline and we were looking to do it for years so we’re glad that we have it built. If we hadn’t done it when we did, I’m not sure we’d have done it now.” With all that investment in its premises, the new workshop, offices and waiting areas on show

68

at the Corr Brothers HQ is a much more enjoyable experience for all visitors. “People are coming in and seeing a more professional approach to the job now,” admits Chris. “There’s a new drivers’ waiting area, new offices, a dismantling area and second hand parts area as well, all the things you need to keep up with all the most

modern garages. “We also have a completely redesigned drive-in, drive-out system now. You get your tachograph or your repairs done, and you drive out the back doors and on you go. It works a lot better – there isn’t nearly as much waiting around for the customers. All in all, it’s an impressive building and it’s something we’re proud of and delighted to have.” The Corr Brothers’ investment has not been limited to the bricks and mortar variety, either, with a heavy spend on the equipment required to keep the garage operation – the company employs four full-time mechanics – ultra-competitive for potential customers. “We do a lot of servicing, general repairs, gear-box repairs, a bit of everything. We have invested a fair bit in all the diagnostics software required as well. There’s a big Scania company up here and most of the local hauliers are all Scania, so we invested heavily in our Scania diagnostic equipment so that we can cover all Scanias, from the 3-series right up to the R-series. The tachographs might be an area that we’re concentrating a lot of our efforts on, but the mechanical end of things is still a very important part of the business.” To find out more about the products and services provided by Corr Brothers, visit www.corrbrothers.co.uk or call (+44) 28 3752 5245.

Many strings to M&A’s bow If necessity is the mother of invention, then diversity is another close relative. Mikey McKeon, the proprietor of Longford-based M & A Couriers, tells Irish Trucker of the various strands to the business which have helped keep the head above water during these troubled times.

e’ve heard often enough how difficult it is for businesses these days. How falling rates and rising energy prices have tightened margins almost to breaking points. All over the country, companies large and small have gone under, contributing to unemployment figures which stretch to 13 per cent, up from a constant of around 4 per cent during the so-called Celtic Tiger years. Gone are the days when both credit and customers were freely available. To survive in this climate, then, companies need to adapt, to diversify their business. M & A Couriers, a transport company based in Brianstown, Co Longford, has recognised the need to add a few strings to the bow. Originally established by Michael Snr and Anna, the couple’s son Mikey has since taking over the running of the business, and Mikey is not afraid to spread his wings into other areas in a bid to ensure the company’s viability into the future. So it is that M & A Couriers, which had made its name as a courier operation serving the midlands to Dublin and back on a daily basis, now offers to provide pallets as well. “It was my father who set up the pallet business originally,” says Mikey. “Between the two of us we’re doing a bit of that now – we buy in new or second-hand pallets and sell them on to our customers. Pharmaceutical companies don’t accept second-hand ones so we need a steady supply of new pallets too. It’s all part of the package we offer.” What has the response been like? “It’s been good enough,” he says. “We always dealt in second hand pallets anyway, gathering them up every day and taking them off the hands of customers who had no use for them. We’ve only started it since the summer and have 10 or 12 clients for pallets at the moment, and we’ll be working on building that up. We’re buying pallets at the moment but the aim is to manufacture them ourselves in the future. Hopefully in a year or two’s

70

time we’ll do that. That’d be the way I’d see it going.” For Mikey, branching out into pallets was a logical step for the company. “It didn’t take a massive investment from ourselves,” he insists. “We already had a lot of what we needed in place. We have a 6,000 sq. ft warehouse, we have the fleet of vehicles, so it makes sense for us to get involved in the pallet end of things so that we can provide the complete service.” Is there any possibility that he would decide to specialise in the pallet business and let the haulage and courier side of things wind down? “Not at all,” says Mikey. “We’d never give up the haulage but things haven’t been easy so we decided there was nothing to lose by offering something else to our customers.” As for the core business, perhaps buoyed by the added boost of offering the complete solution for palletised freight, M & A Couriers is keeping the collective head above water. As a member of the Mullingar-based PalletXpress operation, M & A Couriers offers a complete 32-county next-day service, as well as serving its specialist area of Longford, Roscommon, Leitrim, Westmeath, Sligo and Galway from its own depot in Brianstown, a javelin throw from the Strokestown Road outside Longford town. Staying afloat over the last couple of years hasn’t been straightforward, though, as Mikey explains: “For a few years there we never went to Dublin with an empty truck. Now, a lot of smaller companies have closed in and around the Longford area, so it means that there have been very few loads to Dublin. As often as not we go up empty and come home full. And we mightn’t even be full, it might just be a half load, but you have to take what you can get.” Nevertheless, the company appears to be on solid foundations, having assembled a loyal collection of customers since its establishment in the 1990s. Encouraged by his parents to take a central role at a young age,

Mikey has been close to the forefront of M & A Couriers since his late teens. Spurred on by the confidence of youth, he rebuffed negative responses from banks and found ways of ploughing some money into the business. “I went to the credit union,” he says. “Borrowed three grand for a lorry and took a chance at it. I was three or four months going up and down to Dublin before I made any money out of it. It was a costly time. I wasn’t getting any wages and I still had to be putting diesel into the lorry.” Things started “banging along” then, he recalls, with the word-of-mouth recommendations of a neighbour helping him on his way. “A man I know, Ray McCormack, works in a hardware store in Roscommon,” he says. “Ray knew a lot of the reps and he asked a few of them to ‘give this man a go’. I was lucky enough with that. It’s done a lot for me. As I did a bit of work for the reps they recommended me to others and things started picking up from there.” Things picked up so well that at one stage M & A Couriers had 12 trucks on the road. The rigours of the downturn have meant a slight downscaling, but the fleet still comprises eight vehicles – “Scanias, Volvos and one DAF,” he says – and with the addition of a connected pallet operation you wouldn’t bet against M & A Couriers surviving and prospering beyond the recession. Nevertheless, Mikey reveals that he has also had to take additional steps to ensure the company’s profitability, such as hiring his own mechanic to look after the vast bulk of servicing inhouse. “The accountant recommended that I do that,” he says, “and it’s worked out well. When you bring a lorry to the garage you’ll pay €55 an hour for a mechanic. I have a mechanic in-house now who’s also a driver, and it’s saved us a fair bit of money over the last while.” For more information on the products and services offered by M & A Couriers, call 043-3359852. stablished in 1982 Fingal Insurance Brokers Ltd. is a leading independently owned Irish insurance brokerage. With a staff of 25 the Company is structured to ensure the best possible service is provided in the niche areas of: -

Haulage Oil / Petrol Distribution Construction Waste Management Leisure & Manufacturing

With Fingal Insurance Brokers you will not be disappointed with the premiums, service and expertise www.fingalinsurance.ie The haulage industry has suffered greatly in recent times and the rise in the price of diesel and insurance along with the drop in rates has hit hauliers very hard. For this reason, hauliers have become more prudent in their search for the right insurance package and this is where Fingal Insurance Brokers come to the fore. The Fingal Insurance Haulage Department is headed by Andy Martin, Director, and Joe Kenny, Account Director, and supported by six additional backroom staff. Andy speaks to us for this month's edition of Irish Trucker and he explains the various packages available to hauliers, while he also stresses that

Working as a team means that Fingal Insurance can achieve their goals

the cheapest package may not invariably be the best suited to the customers' needs. “Hauliers are more cautious these days as to what packages they go for. There are three main areas that they need to cover, all of which are essential to running a business,” said Andy. They are: - Motor - Employers / Public Liability - Carriers Liability “With our experience and through the contacts that we have established over the years, we feel best placed to cater for the haulage industry and that's what we have been doing for almost 30 years now. “The cheapest package may not always be the best option for the customers and we would advise our clients of that. There are a number of intricacies that make up a package and it is our aim to provide the best possible service.” Like all businesses, they pride themselves in customer satisfaction and it would be the exception that a customer would leave Fingal Insurance Brokers. “We have a lot of repeat custom and many of these will have been with us years. With the experience we have, we feel that we have the knowledge to provide the quality of service our customers deserve.” The company is regulated by the Irish Financial Regulator, which means they are recognised as leading providers of independent expert advice on insurance products and related services. "We provide a highly professional service to our commercial clients not only in the area of securing the best covers, in terms of price and security, but can offer a comprehensive risk and claims management service in conjunction with dedicated specialists, with whom we have developed close partnerships,” said Andy.

After 25 years in business Fingal Insurance Brokers have an in-depth knowledge of the haulage industry. They have access to specialist haulage markets with packages tailored to individual needs Phone 01 8404012 IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 73

Fingal Insurance Brokers has set up exclusive markets with European, Lloyds and UK insurers (an obvious move as much of the general haulage and motor fleet business is underwritten outside the country) with a view towards securing more competitive premiums. “With our wealth of experience and specialization we guarantee the following:- Competitive price - Widest possible cover - Highest level of service to our clients “Through the schemes, we can offer our customer a wider range of options to choose from and this has proven to be mutually successful ourselves and our insurers. Another area of specialization is in the provision of Freight Forwarding Insurance. In respect of Freight Forwarders the worldwide aspect has to be catered for and Fingal Insurance has established niche relationships with European insurers to cater for their requirements. Each client must have peace of mind that their insurance has been arranged in a proper manner. Fingal Insurance

Experience is something that Fingal Insurance can offer in abundance

will guarantee peace of mind and in addition provide a service that reflects our customers needs. “Everyone is looking to cut down on costs. Diesel is diesel, so if you get it cheaper, fair enough, you'll save money. Insurance is a little different, which is why we feel advice is so important. If a guy has a problem and it's sorted out quickly, that's something you just can't pay for. “We will continue to go out there and make the contacts. We are determined to keep making new contacts and stay on top, to sustain our existing client base and attract new clients. If we don't continue to progressively

expand, then we're of no use to anyone.” Based at Unit B5 Airside Enterprise Centre, Swords, Co. Dublin the company has added another service to its portfolio as Fingal Financial Services offer advice and products on Mortgages, Pension Planning, Investments, Life and Serious Illness Cover, Mortgage Protection, Income Protection and Business Protection.
