Run by brothers Derry, Eoin and Colm O’Brien, Wiser Recycling employs 70 staff and has outlets in Midleton, Cobh and Cork City. The company’s growth has been facilitated by its purchase of Blarney Wheelie Bins in 2005 and Advanced Skip Hire in 2009. Wiser customers can avail of a special discount on skip hire from Advanced Skip Hire, which unlike Blarney Wheelie Bins, continues to operate as a separate company. “The company has come a long way since it started out in Midleton 19 years ago and here’s hoping the next 19 years will be just as successful,” Eoin O’Brien says. “One of the key driving forces behind our growth has been our commitment to offering the best possible service at the most competitive price. We offer

the cheapest domestic wheelie bin collection in Co. Cork and intend to keep it that way.” Wiser Recycling is a fully integrated waste management company that strives to achieve the highest recycling levels possible. of the costs of disposing of this waste is the creation of landfill sites where domestic waste and commercial waste is buried and can take many years to degrade. By recycling your domestic waste, you are reducing the volume of waste going into landfill sites. In addition, recycling and composting your domestic waste also has the knock-on effect of helping you to cut your weekly waste collection charges. Wiser’s fleet of over 40 bin and skip trucks are a familiar sight on the roads Cork and east Waterford. While the fleet is dominated by Daf the company operates a variety of truck types and took delivery of new Mercedes late in 2010 and a new Renault in 2011. “We chose Renault as our favoured option as they offered a bumper-to-bumper five-year warranty and the fuel economy it delivers,” Eoin explains. allinan Coaches was founded in 1995 by Tommy Callinan and during the past 17 years, Tommy has ensured that the company has gone from strength to strength by providing Luxury Coach Service to a wide client base. With bases in both Dublin and Galway, Callinan Coaches operate a modern fleet of 32 coaches ranging from 35 – 49 – 53 – 59 – 84 seaters. Callinan Coaches have been awarded five-star ratings approved by CTTC to Failte Ireland Standards. They also have Failte Ireland approved driver guides available upon request and are a fully licensed operator nationally and internationally. “We’re based here in Clare-Galway and we also have a yard base in Dublin. We’ve been in business since 1995 and would employ 103 people in total,” said Tommy. “Mainly what we would do is contract work. Our biggest contract would be with City Link, where we would have 16 non-stop runs to Dublin Airport each-way and we would also have six runs to Cork and five runs to Clifden. We also do CIE tours Euro Lines London, Paris and Amsterdam.”

It’s safe to say that there are fewer lines of business more demanding than Luxury Coach Service, but somehow Callinan Coaches have continued to make it work through three different decades. The first coach I bought was a Volvo B10 and it got me through the first year very well, but there came a time when I just had to add to my fleet and staff because of the amount of business that we were getting. “I started out with one coach back then and now have 32 coaches, so it just shows how things have grown since then.” It could be argued that Callinan Coaches got off the ground at the perfect time from a business perspective, with the economy booming strong. Between then and now contracts with numerous different companies across the country have been secured and thankfully for Tommy and co, their company isn’t suffering as much as others in these tough times. “It is though at the moment,” admitted Tommy. “Every business is struggling but we’re lucky that we’re not fighting for business because of our contracts. similar to ours are working below cost on survival mode. “We know exactly what’s required everyday, but the toughest things at the moment are the cost of fuel and complying with legislation. The way legislation is coming down at the moment it is increasing costs significantly and no one wants to pay for interests in these costs. “Eventually all these costs will have to be past on for companies to survive,” he added. One of the longstanding contracts which Callinan Coaches have is with Eurolines – a network which connects over 500 destinations, covering the whole of the continent of

Eurolines allows travelling from Sicily to Helsinki and from Casablanca to Moscow and groups 32 independent coach companies operating together as Europe's largest regular coach network. “We’ve been doing work for Eurolines for a few years now and we are expected annually by them to make sure we comply with all the rules and regulations,” said Tommy. The success of any business can be gauged by the length of time that they are operating. In the haulage industry, it is harder than most to survive and experience is an essential ingredient in order to achieve this.

ver the last few years, hauliers have had to endure a torrid time as rising fuel costs and falling rates have pushed many to the brink and unfortunately for some, they have failed to come through these testing times. However, there are a number of companies that have been able to adapt and more importantly diversify

into other areas, which has eased the burden on them. One such company is Oliver Transport Services Ltd, which this year celebrates 26 years in the industry, and was the winner of the 2010 Export and Freight Irish Haulier of the Year. To reach such land mark in modern times is almost unheard of as the current recession that has gripped
most of Europe takes its toll, but Oliver Transport Services Ltd has worked hard to ensure that they continue to provide the same level of service that their large customer base has become accustomed too. Irish Trucker, we speak to transport manager Andy Oliver about the success of the company. First, let's take a brief look at the origins of the business and for that we must go back to 1985 when Willie Oliver set out with one truck, but with hard work and dedication, the company grew considerably. always had a passion for the haulage industry and indeed, he's worked hard to get the hauliers concerns listened too, being a past National Chairman of the Road Haulage Association. Over the last 10 years with the RHA, he has also acted as Northern Ireland Chairman, and Scotland and Northern Ireland Regional Chairman 2009. And,
of course, he won Transport Personality of the Year at the recent 2009 Export & Freight All Ireland Transport & Logistics Awards, so there's no one who knows more about the industry than Willie Oliver. Over the years, the fleet and the business has expanded with over 30 trucks now servicing Ireland, the UK

“We felt the need to diversify over the last few years and we opened the new premises in 2009 to cater for maintaining our own fleet and for the outside work that we already carried out for other customers,” revealed Andy. “A lot of our machinery would meet MoT specifications like the inspection pit and the Maha braking testing unit and this gives customers the peace of mind in knowing that their vehicles will be properly maintained and repaired.” Even in the haulage end of the business, Andy revealed that there have been changes made as they have gone from being mainly a curtainsiders operator to transporting all types of haulage and with 70 different trailers to choose from, they are capable of meeting anyone's demands. “We would have 30 trucks and around 70 trailers that include curtainsiders, flats, extendable flats, tankers, euroliners and low loaders, and we specialise in a number of diverse areas, including the movement of timber, steel, palletised goods, concrete products, hazardous goods

and light/heavy machinery.” The company prides itself on adhering to strict industry standards. All of its 25 drivers are fully trained using the latest CPC updates, and some drivers are also ADR approved to carry hazardous goods and there's an in-house Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor. The company also analyses all its own tachographs to ensure it continues to run a 100% legal fleet. This is one area which the company's director feels passionate about and are firmly convinced that if all operators ran to the same standards all would be better off. Certainly Willie Oliver is adamant that all rogue operators should be taken out of the industry and has no difficulty with the latest position where drivers are being put in prison for severe noncompliance. “We would have a very small turnover of staff and some lads would be with us since the start and they are highly trained in their field of expertise. We realize that without them the company would not be where it is today and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all the
work they have put in.” Not only is this family run business involved in the haulage industry, but they also run a very successful kitchen manufacturing business known as Exorna Kitchens from its headquarters on the Ballycastle Road, which is managed by Andy's brother Richard. Another string to the Oliver bow is Coastal Self Drive Ltd which offers a range of commercial and passenger carrying vehicles and is managed by Andy.

Irish Trucker visited the resplendent company premises at Fairgreen, Athboy and caught up with Leslie McCormack to get a rundown on the history and future plans of Meath’s longest-serving commercial vehicle test centre.

aking us back to the origins and genesis of Dessie McCormack Ltd., the founder’s son Leslie notes: “Having served his time in Smithfield Motors in Dublin, Dad [Dessie] set up in business in 1972 at Fairgreen in Athboy and operated as a sole trader up until 1980. “In 1980, he moved into the current premises here on the Dunderry Road. It was all repair work up until the mid-

1980s, when he started doing testing as well, taking over from Tara Motors. We are now the longest-serving commercial vehicle test centre in the county.” Providing a premium service throughout every facet of the operation, Dessie McCormack Ltd. specialises in servicing and general repairs of light and heavy commercial vehicles, psv vehicles and trailers. Leslie is pleased
to report that, despite the obvious downturn in the economy, business is going reasonably well at the 5,000 sq ft Athboy workshop: “Obviously, you have good and bad weeks, but the last two or three years have actually been busy enough overall. The testing is busy but business in general is up and down. You just have to get on with it and continue to provide a good service, hopefully the economy will get back on IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS
track soon. “Testing is a large part of the business and the servicing end of it has gone quiet in comparison. A lot of the work in the garage is a knock-on from testing; where a vehicle fails the test and the owner asks for a price to get the necessary work carried out. We can offer both services at a reasonable rate under one roof and people appreciate the convenience of this.” Thus, Dessie McCormack Ltd. can be described as a one-stop shop for all your mechanical and electrical maintenance and testing needs. With convenient access and a quick turnaround it is spacious facility, the company provides an efficient service at an affordable rate, ensuring optimal customer care at all times. As well as servicing, repairs and VTN-approved testing of HGVs, LGVs, PSVs and trailers, Dessie McCormack Ltd. is also a fully-approved NSAI tachograph (Siemans VDO taghographs, digital and analogue) and speed limiter centre (using Groeneveld speed limiters electronic and mechanical), boasting the latest in LGV & HGV diagnostic equipment and a team of highlyskilled technicians to complete every task with the minimum of fuss and maximum client satisfaction. A 24-hour recovery service is also provided, as well as brake tests and wheel alignment.
The directors have always made sure the company operates at its optimum capacity, resisting the urge to seek growth for growth’s sake, as Leslie confirms: “We never got too big. Instead, we like to keep things tight so as to offer customers the best service at the best possible price. We have a staff of seven here at the moment and we’re running a tight ship, with no unnecessary overheads.” In terms of workmanship, Dessie McCormack Ltd. is a versatile and dependable concern, able to provide the discerning haulier / owner-driver with a full range of services. “We can basically carry out whatever repairs are required. There’s no job we can’t tackle and nothing is too big or too small. If anyone is having trouble with a commercial vehicle – light or heavy – or even just wants it checked over, then we can help them out. “We also do a lot of trailer work. Trailers are a very big part of the business. We find when we are testing them that ABS is one of the most common problems with trailers. We carry out all aspects of trailer services from brake overhauls to ABS retro fitment and fault finding.” As for its catchment area, Dessie McCormack Ltd is in a central location to take in the nearby County Meath urban

areas of Navan, Kells and Trim, all of which are within a tenmile radius of Athboy. Business also goes into neighbouring Westmeath. Regarding the ongoing difficulties posed by the economic downturn, Leslie says: “It has been tough for every business and we’re no different. Numbers have been down, but we’re still getting work in and we haven’t had to let any staff go, which is very important. In fact, we’ve increased our staff numbers since the start of the recession, so we’ve been managing okay. “If we could keep going the way we are, we’d be happy enough. There’s no point getting too ambitious in the current climate. To be honest, only for the VTN testing – and the light commercial end in particular – the whole thing would be dead in the water. That’s where the volume comes from.” Founder Dessie is still very much involved in the day-to-day running of the business, while Michael Garry – who has been with the company for 35 years – also plays a big role in keeping the show on the road. Leslie joined the family business in 2005, having traveled extensively before that. He served his time as a HGV mechanic with Harris, main Hino agent on the Naas Road.

Plans are in place to expand the Dublin operation over the next few years to employ 10 persons operating a fleet of 10 vehicles by 2014.” Not only are their driving instructors approved by the Road Safety Authority, but they have also obtained the RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction and are members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). “Our Instructors have participated in IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Road Safety Authority as a provider of Driver CPC training in 18 centres throughout Ireland. Instructors have been busy delivering the Driver CPC training since it was introduced in April 2009. The Swilly Group is one of the very few training providers involved in delivery of the Driver CPC Initial Qualification and Periodic Training to new and existing drivers respectively.” Damian also pointed out that The Swilly Group is unique as one of the few companies in a position to deliver all modules of the RSA Driver CPC periodic training syllabus, “A lot of companies don't realize that the providers they are using may only be able to legitimately offer them 2 or 3 of the prescribed modules.” “The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) of Ireland has also approved The Swilly Group as the

sole provider of the Certificate in Professional Competence (CPC) in Freight and Passenger Transport Management in Donegal.” The Swilly Group is also a leading provider of Advanced and Occupational Driver Training. here are many different strands to the haulage industry and one of those is waste management, which is arguably the most contentious of them all, given the legislation and regulations that are involved in the day to day operations. In the past decade or so, waste management has taken on a whole new meaning as the consciousness about the environment and the damage that is being done by us is being highlighted and scrutinized a lot more and recycling is now a

priority for everyone from homeowners to multi-national companies. That is why in this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile an experienced waste management company that have been supplying a top quality service to a large customer base for the past 27 years. Foyle Skip Hire was initially established in 1984 by Robert Hamilton and William Hague. One year after that Robert took over full control of the business and over the
years built up the customer base to what it is today. Having started with just one lorry and six skips, the fleet as well as every other aspect of the business has grown considerably and now there are up to 70 skips up for hire. These days, Robert and his son Stephen ensure that the everyday running of the business goes as smoothly as possible from their base in Londonderry. “We trade for local councils, IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

companies and multinationals and also hire mini skips for DIY and household use. In addition to skip hire 'Foyle' provide other waste disposal services and have just recently ventured into road haulage,” said Robert. “As every business has individual needs your best waste management solutions and contracts can be discussed directly with our proprietor.” The company is fully licensed to transport hazardous waste materials by Derry County Council and their skips range from mini to large and are priced at competitive rates that many of their competitors can't match while they also offer a domestic bin service to a large customer base. “All materials that we collect are brought to our waste transfer station at Newbuildings Industrial Estate for sorting and then any recyclable materials are sent to the proper facilities, while the rest of the waste is sent to landfill.” The main produced recycled by the company is glass which is the only material that is 100% recyclable. As part of the service they collect glass bottles from pubs, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs. They can supply containers and empty them accordingly for a small charge. “Glass has always been our main focus of attention, but that has changed over the years and we recycle most types of waste now. Cardboard is a big area and we can house up to 40 tonnes of it at the warehouse. We have recently upgraded our baler, which will help speed up the process of baling the cardboard and this will enable us to recycle a lot more.” Robert revealed that the amount of legislation involved in waste management can be frightening at times. “There is an awful amount of paperwork involved in the industry and IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

every piece of waste that we handle must be monitored from when we pick it up until it reaches the recycling facility. “All products are monitored thoroughly, while we would be audited every three months by the Department of Environment. This entails an inspector coming to the yard and ensuring that everything is in line with EU regulations.” Apart from waste management, Foyle Skip Hire now offer a general haulage service to its customers and Robert admitted that this is an area that they are working hard on to develop and they are pleased with the direction the service is heading. “Our most recent development and natural progression from the transport of waste has been in the transport of goods. We can distribute within the UK & Ireland and can cater for most load types. Like many professional road hauliers we are registered members of the Road Haulage Association (RHA). We are only starting off in this area so the fleet only consists of a 128 cubic yard walking floor trailer, Bulk tipper (50 cubic metres) and a Bulk waste ejector trailer (110 cubic yards), but the aim is to expand on that in the coming years. “We operate throughout the 32 counties, for example, we deliver to garden centres in Co Waterford, while we do carry a lot of cardboard across to England as well.” With such an extensive fleet at their disposal, maintenance is a key issue in the business and although they carry out some of the smaller jobs themselves, most is done by contractors as Stephen revealed. “We would do a small bit ourselves, but the bulk of the maintenance would be carried out by TBF Thompson, while any COMPANY D ETAILS electrical would be done by Manvik.
