the company’s initial core business of freight forwarding, general logistics and European road freight continued to develop, national distribution of palletised cargo became a priority through its association with pallet networks in the UK. This inevitably led to the setting up of TPN in Ireland in 2004 in conjunction with 13 other independent distributors dotted throughout the island. Following a €15m investment in hub facilities and a further €2m in development, TPN is now the dominant player in the pallet delivery market in Ireland. Independent Express enjoys the services of an Irish network of 24 depots and 95 UK depots, all tightly controlled and monitored to ensure the best delivery service in the market. Industry-leading technology offering full track and trace and imaged PODs direct to customers' computers also sets Independent Express Cargo and The Pallet Network apart from all others. Friendliness and reliablity is the motto for both companies. TPN was the first pallet network in Ireland or the UK to achieve ISO accreditation for every member. By combining into a single network, TPN members can offer the agility and personal service of smaller operators while offering the national and international reach of larger ones – giving customers the best of both worlds. In addition, because members cover shorter distances within a familiar territory, they offer a fast, flexible service, while at the same time reducing costs and carbon footprint as well as maintaining drivers’ hours safely within those specified by the Working Time Directive. TPN’s central IT system collates the shipment data from all its depots, sorting pallets into destination depot order and producing outbound load manifests. After the deliveries are completed, the local depots key in the delivery details and scan the POD image for electronic transfer and IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

archiving. The scanned image in available to clients electronically via the web. UK export freight is loaded on double-deck trailers, which depart the Irish hub at 3am for the UK Pallet Network hub in Minworth. The freight is unloaded there and routed for nextday delivery by the 95 UK depots. The same IT system is used in the UK and Ireland to prepare manifests, control the pallet movements and provide the POD for customers in Ireland and the UK. Pallet weights vary in weight and size. TPN can transport anything from a carton to

1,200 kgs, which covers a wide variety of products including building materials, retail goods, enginering and computer parts. In short, Independent Express Cargo/ TPN provides an unrivalled service in its field of expertise and is confident that it will come through this recession with flying colours.

The exterior of Duffy Commercials

A full range of services Operating out of Cootehill in County Cavan, Duffy Commercials offers a full range of services to the discerning commercial vehicle user – specialising in sales, servicing, testing and repairs. MD Barry Duffy prides himself on providing an extremely high-quality service and this is one of the main reasons why the Duffy name has been synonymous with haulage in the North East for over 30 years.

D

uffy Commercials is headquartered at Killycramp, on the Shercock Road, in Cootehill, County Cavan. A wholly independent dealer, they sell a full range of new and used commercial vehicles and are also renowned for light and heavy commercial servicing and repairs. And commercial vehicle testing is becoming an increasinglyimportant part of the business. As the recession bites in and the credit crunch means that fewer

26

hauliers than ever before are in a position to upgrade their fleet with new models, the workshop has assumed its place at the hub of the operation. Around the clock, it’s a hive of activity for light and heavy commercial vehicle testing, tachograph calibration, and all kinds of repair work, including contracts with Bus Eireann as well as work for private bus operators and a number of local commercial hauliers. “We still do some commercial sales but the testing and workshop are now

the main thrust of the business,” managing director Barry Duffy confirms. “We have a small workshop for light commercial work and then have the test centre and main workshop floor with two pits, an overhead gantry lane and all the latest test and diagnostic equipment. We’re in a very strong position because we can offer the full range of services under one roof: light and heavy commercial testing and repairs. “We also do a lot of bodywork, with IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

bodyshop facilities here for repairs on both cars and vans. We can handle any job on any vehicle, including work for insurance companies, repairs on lorries, re-sprays etc.” In terms of catchment area, Duffy Commercials boasts a large number of customers in Cavan and Monaghan but also works for haulage companies in Louth and even into South Donegal. The genesis of Duffy Commercials goes back over three decades. Arthur and Dympna Duffy established the family business in the ‘70s and their son Barry is now at the helm, spearheading a multifaceted operation offering a vast range of services with trademark professionalism, integrity and reliability. From pre-testing through to full repairs, they can efficiently handle every task assigned to them. This is always done in a friendly, transparent and affordable manner, which is why they attract so many regular customers from both near and far. As Barry points out, the secret of the company’s success is far from rocket science: “We pride ourselves on service. At the end of the day, it all comes down to quality of service; that’s the most important thing. “We try to keep our labour rates as keen as possible, operating at the IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

minimum possible level to keep costs down for the haulier. Everything is designed to accommodate the haulier and to make things as affordable and convenient as possible for them. “We also operate a local breakdown service and we do call-outs as well and we get a good deal of repeat business from that.” Duffy Commercials’ reputation precedes them at this stage. Over the years, they have provided the haulage community with sterling service, developing a company that’s known and respected near and far. By continuously providing a top-quality service, Duffy Commercials has become a byword for excellence is testing, servicing and repairs. “We have a solid reputation,” Barry acknowledges. “Our family has been established in the industry for a long time but we only started into the testing about six years ago and it has taken off. Nobody is escaping the effects of the recession and we’re no different to anyone else in this respect. Things are on a bit of a go-slow but at the same time testing is about the steadiest business in the motor trade at the minute, so we can be thankful of that. We got into it at the right time.” Independence is another major strength: “The fact that we don’t align ourselves to any franchise is a big plus as customers know they can get honest, independent advice, which will always result in them making the best purchase possible for their specific needs. We’re free to operate outside the confines of a dealership and we

aren’t overstocked with unwanted second-hand vehicles. We only sell the very best and our customers have always appreciated this.” Are sales virtually non-existent at present, though? “It’s not completely dead, but it is slow. We’re not trying to push it at the moment because the return is poor. However, if somebody comes to us looking for a new or used commercial vehicle, we will be more than happy to help them out.” Over the years, substantial investment has been made to ensure the best service possible. The workshop is stocked with the latest state-of-the-art equipment and investment is ongoing to ensure that all testing, diagnostic and tachograph equipment is kept up to date and working at the optimum level. At present, a team of 15 is employed at Duffy Commercials: ten technicians on the workshop floor; three in administration; with father and son Arthur and Barry running the show. Looking to the future, the latter says: “We would be hoping that we won’t be looking at too much more of the downturn and that things will level off. The key is to keep our labour costs down and to keep ourselves as competitive as possible because the reality is that hauliers are struggling to survive and every penny they can save makes a big difference; it could keep them in business and we want to play our part in it. “At the same time, we’re not going to let our standards slip. We’ll continue to use the best possible equipment and

Easytrip expands tolling payment scheme into UK market Easytrip, Ireland’s largest provider of electronic tolling payment services recently announced a new tag which can be used on the Dartford Crossing in London. The introduction of this new service will be of particular interest to commercial and haulage companies carrying out business in the UK and reinforces Easytrip’s position as market leader in the business electronic payment services sector. The Dartford - Thurrock River Crossing is one of Europe's most heavily used crossings and complex traffic management systems. Spanning the Thames between Dartford and Thurrock, the Crossing forms a vital link in the M25, Britain's most important orbital road. The introduction of Easytrip’s new Dart tag will further assist Irish hauliers doing business in the UK. Not only will it result in savings of up to 13.5 percent on Dartford tolls, versus paying these tolls in cash, it also provides greater convenience and efficiency with a single contact point for billing. Transactions are billed in Euros through the customer’s existing Easytrip account and an itemised monthly statement for easy monitoring will be supplied. “We hope the introduction of this new service will be of great assistance to our existing and potential Easytrip customers,” said Dermot MacEvilly, CEO of Easytrip Services Ireland. “This new tag will make life so much easier for commercial and haulage companies in particular, as they do not have to worry about sterling and euro exchanges, as this can all be taken care of in their monthly statement. This expansion of our services into the UK we see as a stepping stone which we hope to build on to extend our services across other locations in the UK and across Europe,” he concluded. To promote the launch of the new tag, Easytrip is offering its service to new and existing customers with no administration costs for the first three months.

Volkswagen support ploughing championships

New safety features to be fitted to all vehicles

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles supplyed vehicles to this year’s National Ploughing Championships. The German manufacturers’ Irish branch provided a fleet of brand new Amarok pick-ups to support all off road activities at this year’s championships. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sales and marketing manager, Niall Phillips stated: “We are delighted to have secured the sponsorship deal at this year’s National Ploughing Championships. “The robust Amarok pick-up with its innovative technology and excellent fuel economy has the perfect setting to demonstrate its capability to transport heavy loads as well as delivering passenger comfort.”

The European Commission has passed legislation that will see all vehicles being able to dial emergency services automatically in the event of a serious accident. The Commission wants the life-saving eCall system to be fitted to all new models of cars and light vehicles from 2015. The eCall system automatically dials Europe's single emergency number 112 in the event of a serious accident and communicates the vehicle's location to the emergency services. A Commission recommendation adopted September 8, urges member states to ensure that mobile phone network operators upgrade their infrastructure so that eCalls are efficiently passed on to emergency services. "Every minute is crucial to save lives and reduce the severity of injuries when emergency services are called to a road accident," said a European Commission statement. "Yet people injured in an accident do not always have the reflex or the physical ability to call emergency services immediately. "eCall devices address this problem by alerting emergency services immediately even if the driver or passenger is unconscious or otherwise unable to call. The technology speeds up the arrival of emergency teams by an estimated 40% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas. "Once widely deployed, eCall will save several hundred lives in Europe every year, and reduce the severity of injuries and trauma in tens of thousands of cases."

Renault train for the future With an increasing amount of technology now being installed on board modern trucks, Renault Trucks France Formation (RTFF - RTF Training) has been providing mechanics with expert training. These "Specialists in Diagnostics and Repairs" (SDRs) become their workshop's key technical resource, qualified to work on HGVs as well as LCVs, and the person who will be in contact with the manufacturer when necessary. In July, Renault Trucks France Formation presented diplomas to the 50th group of mechanics to complete the programme. This means there are now over 500 diagnostic and repair specialists who have been trained to carry out this function in Renault Trucks workshops. The growing amount of increasingly complex technological solutions that are incorporated into the design of today's trucks and those being developed for the future, has lead Renault Trucks to create jobs for specialists in diagnostics and repairs, or "SDRs". Recruited from workshop technicians after a selection process, they are able to carry out diagnostics and repair the most serious breakdowns on all Renault Trucks vehicles from LCVs right up to the biggest Heavy Duty models. The 50th group of mechanics to complete this training programme have just been presented with their diplomas, meaning that there are now some 500 "diagnostic and repair specialists" that have been trained to work in Renault Trucks network workshops. Before following the specific "SDR" training, candidates must pass an assessment test of their technical knowledge, and then follow a 15 day pre-selection course. Once this phase is over, some 10 candidates are selected for the sandwich training course which takes place over a period of 12 weeks. Once they have received their diplomas, SDRs are given an annual refresher course to make sure they are up to date with the latest technological innovations. These experts in diagnostics then become their workshop's key technical resource capable of providing immediate technical support for dealerships and service points and the person who contacts the manufacturer when this becomes necessary. For customers, they provide an assurance that repair solutions will be found efficiently and rapidly, even in the event of a complex malfunction on their vehicles.

Building sector continues to fall The haulage sector took another blow with news that the building sector fell for a 51st consecutive month. Activity in the beleaguered Irish construction sector fell even further in August, according to the latest construction purchasing managers index from Ulster Bank. The index stands at 43.5 in August, up from 42.1 in July, but any figure under 50 indicates contraction in the sector. It’s bad news for hauliers as the transport and construction sectors are closely linked. During the building boom, haulage also enjoyed magical times. But the two sectors have plummeted together as well. Ulster Bank states Building sector that the pace of contraction was the slowest in four months, continues to fall while the rate of decline was still sharp. Activity has now fallen each month since June 2007. “The construction sector continues to face a challenging outlook in the near term, as it is weighed down by the lack of new business. Given that activity levels are still extremely low, employment in the construction sector continued to decline, as it has done in every month since May 2007, although the pace of contraction has slowed for a sixth straight month,” explained an Ulster Bank spokesman.

Toyota downgraded one notch Ratings agency Fitch has downgraded Toyota’s longterm debt by one notch to ’A’. The Japanese vehicle manufacturer's exposure to a strong yen has hit the company hard. According to Fitch, "Toyota is the most exposed among the big three Japanese automakers to currency movements and its profitability improvement was slowest among its Japanese competitors post the recent economic crisis even after disregarding the impact of product recalls in the past two years. "Fitch estimates that Japan accounts for about 40% of Toyota's global production, and Toyota exports around 50% of its Japanese production, which is higher compared with its Japanese competitors."

Slowdown at Europe’s container ports There will be a major downturn in the volume of business at Northern Europe’s top container ports. The ports face weakening box volumes for the rest of the current year and into 2012, according to the latest Global Port Tracker report. Despite relatively strong growth so far at Le Havre, Antwerp, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven and Hamburg, the latest monthly trade outlook for North Europe is less encouraging. Hackett Associates and the Bremen Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics predict the decline will begin at the end of this month. Their report projects full-year 2011 growth of 12.7% for inbound traffic and an 8.7% rise in outbound. “But for 2012, we project this level of growth to be cut in half, with the weaker trade volumes becoming apparent this year,” says the report’s co-author, Ben Hackett. “The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the International Monetary Fund have produced their latest economic outlooks, both of which indicate a downgrading of gross domestic product at global and national levels, with the US and Europe being the weakest. “This does not bode well for container demand.”

Transport for London helping Olympic hauliers An Olympic Games postcode checker has been launched by Transport for London

Transport for London has launched an online Olympics Games postcode checker. The launch shows TfL’s commitment to helping freight firms plan and manage deliveries during next year’s Olympics in the English capital. It has also committed to providing a detailed timetable of what additional information will become available for the freight industry, as well as creating a dedicated freight web portal. All commitments were announced at the inaugural TfL 2012 Freight Forum working party meeting in London. The forum was attended by a range of freight organisations and operators, including the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the Road Haulage Association (RHA), DHL, UPS, Sainsbury’s, London Councils and representing the Traffic Commissioners, Sarah Bell, the Western Area TC. Leon Daniels, MD of Surface Transport at TfL, says: “Last week’s freight forum was an invaluable source of intelligence about what those involved in making and receiving deliveries will need to keep London running during the Games. It also confirmed that no one organisation or sector can achieve this alone – it will be a joint effort. The new postcode data we have released is an important part of the information we will be providing to London’s business community to allow them to plan for next year’s Games.” The postcode information, produced in conjunction with Royal Mail, is available at: www.tfl.gov.uk/developersdrivers. New Zealand oil spill hits beaches Oil from a container ship stranded off the New Zealand coast is washing up along beaches on the Bay of Plenty today. Salvage experts are trying to secure the 47,000-tonne ship, which ran aground on a reef off New Zealand last Wednesday.

Fist-sized clumps of oil have started to wash up along beaches of the popular holiday resort and Maritime New Zealand says the threat is increasing with weather conditions set to deteriorate significantly and a storm brewing. The ship is laden with 1,700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, which has been transferred to secure tanks at the rear of the vessel and is slowly being pumped into a barge. The spill has killed a number of sea birds, with seven penguins and two shags receiving treatment at wildlife rescue centres after being found covered in oil. And there are unconfirmed reports of oilcoated seals in the huge bay at the top of the North Island.

Oil demand forecast lowered The International Energy Agency has cut global oil demand forecasts for this year and next. Demand for oil is expected to weaken as the long-awaited economic recovery falters. The Paris-based adviser reduced its estimate for 2012 consumption by 400,000 barrels a day, and for 2011 by 200,000 a day. Worldwide demand will rise by 1.2 per cent to 89.3 million barrels a day this year and by 1.6 per cent to 90.7 million next year. A full resumption of exports from Libya’s going to be difficult, with global oil demand increasing only slightly amid growing concerns about the poor health of the global economy. Brent crude futures have dropped 11% from a 2011 peak of $127.02 a barrel reached in April, as Europe’s sovereign debt crisis spreads and global manufacturing slows. Brent traded at about $113 today. Worldwide gross domestic product will expand by 4.2% next year, less than the 4.4% previously anticipated, according to the IEA. Supplies from OPEC (responsible for 40% of global production) may be sufficient to meet demand over the next three-quarters without the need for more production increases.

Tight budgets slowing CPC uptake The Freight Transport Association says stretched budgets are behind a reluctance to invest in the compulsory training for drivers. Responsible for CPC training in Ireland and the UK, the FTA is worried by the slow response in training drivers ahead of the Driver CPC deadline of 2014. James Firth, FTA head of road freight and enforcement policy, says: “With the passenger deadline now only 24 months away, it is likely that the spike is largely due to the PSV sector picking up the pace. “Current intelligence suggests that a number of qualified HGV drivers will be well short of the 35 hours mark approaching the 2014 deadline. This will mean for those who haven’t yet begun the process a lack of choice when it comes to finding good value, quality training.”

Severe weather warning for winter Driving conditions in Ireland this winter could be every bit as dangerous as they were in 2009/10. A UK-based long-range weather forecaster has issued a severe winter weather warning for 2011-2012. Last winter was one of the coldest experienced in Ireland and Britain more than 45 years and it appears that there will be no respite, with Arctic conditions against predicted. James Madden from weather organisation Exacta Weather correctly predicted the harsh conditions experienced over the last two years, and is once again forecasting record-breaking snowfall and freezing temperatures during November, December and January. One of Madden’s primary methods of analysing long range weather conditions is his analysis of solar cycles: “Periods of low solar activity at present and what we have seen in recent years influence the Earth’s atmosphere by allowing the stratosphere to cool. This has a somewhat more profound effect over Northern Europe and the UK in terms of colder and snowier winters, due to jet stream patterns that block warm air from reaching us and create more moisture. “Although sunspot activity has increased somewhat this year and there has been an increase in solar flare activity, the activity is minuscule in comparison to what it should be like during a solar maximum and in terms of frequency. Periods of low solar activity such as this have future repercussions of low solar activity in future cycles and produce extra cloud cover that reflects sunlight with a cooling influence on Earth. “The lack of major sunspots and solar flares clearly indicate a slower conveyor belt within the sun. We are now in a very weak solar maximum and my observations indicate that the next solar cycle will also be weak. “It will be exceptionally cold and snowy with well below average temperatures. I fully expect to see records broken with the highlands of Scotland being once again particularly hard hit. It is therefore vital to start preparing now in terms of high energy bills and raising awareness amongst the most vulnerable and elderly people of society.” A severe winter weather warning has been issued

Toll considered for Jack Lynch Tunnel Commuters travelling through the Jack Lynch Tunnel in Cork may find themselves paying a toll along the route in the near future. Transport Minister Leo Varadkar admitted that to the Cork Business Association that the Government was looking at the possibility of installing a toll along the route. This could have a detrimental effect on Cork businesses as 68,000 commuters use the Motorists could face tolls on Jack tunnel on a daily basis, many of whom Lynch tunnel may boycott the route if the toll is implemented. Chamber chief executive Conor Healy said: "The minister agreed at that point to order an independent review of the impact a toll would have on the tunnel," Mr Healy said. "We have written to him this week reminding him of his commitment, and seeking an update on the progression of that independent review."

Fears for small shipping firms Citigroup have revealed that the introduction of Maersk Line’s daily service could force smaller container lines out of the Asia-Europe. “The combination of mega-sized vessels that offer significant economies of scale, frequent departures, fixed schedules, refunds for late delivery and no surcharge for reliability, may cause existing players with smaller ships or uncompetitive cost bases to exit the Asia to Europe trade,“ said the bank’s Hong Kong-based shipping analyst, Rigan Wong. Wong identified Taipei-listed Yang Ming as a prime candidate to quit the trade. “Yang Ming faces huge earnings downside risks from its Asia-Europe exposure, as it has no scale advantage with its fleet of smaller vessels, sank into heavy losses in Q2, has a weak balance sheet and currently trades at valuations that are richer than its peers.”

Ford Evos concept unveiled at Frankfurt Motorshow

J Mays, Group Vice President, Design and Chief Creative Officer unveiling the new Ford Evos concept at the Frankfurt Motorshow today

The Ford Evos Concept previews a new global design language for the next generation of Ford cars. The company’s first truly global design DNA was created as a key part of the One Ford product strategy, and signals a significant transformation of the Ford brand. Developed in a collaborative process by Ford’s global design team, it provides a framework to guide the creation of new products for Ford’s future model portfolio worldwide. “The momentum of Ford’s global product plan is building fast, and this new design DNA provides a clear direction for a whole new generation of models,” said J Mays.

Maersk aim to change face of shipping Maersk shipping line has announced plans Mearsk is to launch a new to launch a new improved service on its service on its Asia-North Europe route Asia-North Europe route. At a recent press conference, Maersk Line CEO Eivind Kolding said the new service meant that containerised cargo could now be delivered with unprecedented frequency and reliability. To back up its claims, Kolding said that the company would be offering customers’ compensation of US$100-300 per container if they are not delivered as promised. He said that until now, customers have had to adjust their production schedules and supply chains to accommodate shipping lines’ unreliability, as they had never been able to trust that their cargo would be on time. “Not anymore,” he said. “We set out to design a service that takes the stress out of our customers’ lives; to change shipping from the weakest to the strongest link in the supply chain. “After all, shipping is only around 2% of our customers’ total cost, and yet our unreliability has, until now, forced them to shape production plans and inventory around it.”

France to make billions from green tax A green tax levied on HGV’s in France will generate annual revenue of €1.24 billion according to the public agency for the funding of transport infrastructure, AFITF. A consortium lead by Italian group Autostrade per l’Italia is to collect the tax through a satellite based toll system and the tax will be levied on commercial vehicles, which weight more than 3.5 tonnes. A spokesman said: “While the legislation accompanying this tax makes provision for hauliers to pass on the cost to shippers and, ultimately, consumers, applying it is likely to be a complex and time-consuming exercise – in short, an additional administrative cost.” The Autostrade consortium would collect an annual fee of €240 million for running the scheme and local authorities, which have responsibility for the upkeep of public roads, would receive €160 million. The remainder of the €1.24 billion income will go towards financing new transport infrastructure projects.

Container stocks on the rise Shipping companies have added more containers to their fleets as the market share increases. John Maccarone, President and CEO of Textainer Group Holdings, said he expected shipping companies to add about 3.5 million containers to the world fleet this year compared with 2.4 million in 2010. Maccarone said: “Eventually, as these older containers begin to cost them a lot more in maintenance and repair, we will see a fleet renewal programme. “My personal feeling is that by the end of this year, or the beginning of next, many shipping lines will begin a significant programme of getting rid of their very old containers and leasing or buying – but most likely leasing.”

Volvo Trucks’ flagship celebrates with 750 hp The Volvo FH16 is now available with 750 hp and 3550 Nm to handle the heaviest and most demanding transport assignments. It will reach the market just in time to celebrate the 16-litre engine’s 25th anniversary. 1987 saw the introduction of the Volvo F16 with Volvo's first-ever 16-litre engine, producing 470 hp. Since then, market needs have driven the development towards increasingly powerful trucks. "With the Volvo FH16 750 we can offer our customers a truck with absolute top performance, good fuel efficiency and extremely low emissions. It's an uncompromising combination for the heaviest and most demanding of transport operations," says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo Trucks. Performance, fuel efficiency and environment The new engine is based on the same technology as Volvo Trucks' current 16-litre 700 hp diesel engine - an in-line six with overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder and unit injectors. It has been optimised for higher power and torque but fuel consumption is unchanged. The 750 engine is available in two versions, one for Euro 5 and the other for EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle), giving even lower particle emissions and less smoke. The Volvo I-Shift automated gearchanging system is fitted as standard and has been modified to handle the engine's high torque. The rear axle range encompasses axles for gross combination weights of up to 250 tonnes. For fast long-haul duties, the recently introduced RS1360 solo axle is a fuel-efficient alternative. Driveability and productivity The new 750 engine produces 2800 Nm of torque at 900 revs/minute, after which the torque curve rises sharply and reaches its peak level of 3550 Nm at 1050 revs/minute, then levels out to 1400 revs/minute. This makes it possible to maintain a high speed on even the toughest uphill climbs. "The more power you have at your disposal at low revs when starting to haul a heavy load, the less strain on the engine and the more fuel-efficient your progress. This in turn results in superb drivability," says Hayder Wokil, product manager at Volvo Trucks. The Volvo FH16 750 is intended both for truly heavy transport duties and for assignments that demand high average speed running on hilly or very hilly roads. "For most FH16 customers, the focus is on transporting as many tonnes as possible in the shortest possible time. However, many customers also need to quickly transport high-value goods and fresh products across long distances with varying topography and deliver just-in-time," explains Wokil. Volvo FH16 now available with 750hp

Heavier transport - more powerful trucks There has long been a trend towards increasingly heavy transport and thus also a greater need for more powerful trucks. Since the introduction of the Volvo F16 in 1987 and the first-generation 16-litre engine producing 470 hp, power levels have risen step by step in pace with market and customer needs. In 1993 power rose to 520 hp. Ten years later an allnew engine arrived, producing 610 hp. In 2009 Volvo was the first manufacturer to reach 700 hp, and now it is time for the next step - the Volvo FH16 750 hp. Production of the first Volvo FH16 trucks for the European market with the higher power output will get under way in the beginning of 2012. In addition to the 750 hp version, Volvo's 16-litre engine is available with power outputs of 540, 600 and 700 hp.

IRHA make plea to landowners The Irish Road Haulage Association has urged landowners to ensure that there roadside hedges and tress are properly dressed to help improve road safety. Flailing branches are a common problem on most national and regional roads and have caused IRHA wants roadside hedges and trees dressed damage to HGV’s as well as causing some accidents. to improve road safety IRHA president Eoin Gavin has stressed that Landowners need to take responsibility and play their part in road safety. “Overhanging branches are a serious hazard for HGVs and other large road vehicles. As branches and hedges impinge on the road space, especially when wet, motorists need to move closer to the centre of the road, which creates a road safety issue,” said Gavin. “Landowners need to take responsibility for maintaining their hedges or else a serious accident may result and large vehicles will continue to be damaged. Local authorities have the authorisation to remove any road hazards such as overhanging branches and subsequently recover the costs from the landowner. Both local authorities and landowners need to act now.”It is an offence under Irish legislation (Roads Act 1993, Section 70) to cut hedges from March to August and, therefore, many hedges are now overgrown and need to be trimmed. There is an obligation on local authorities to maintain verges and hedges up to one metre, after which it becomes the responsibility of the landowner.

Enniskillen road scheme gets go ahead Northern Ireland’s Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has announced plans for a £12.85 million road scheme in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. Work is due to commence on the A32 Cherrymount Link Road in the near future and is expected to be completed by April, 2013. The new development will ease traffic congestion in the town, while it will also provide a new strategic link to the east. "Construction of the new link road is also timely in that it will also improve access to and from the new South West Acute Hospital in the town, currently under construction," said Minister Kennedy. A £5.46m contract for construction of the new link road has been awarded to a joint venture between PT McWilliams and McLaughlin & Harvey. "The scheme comprises of two kilometres of proposed new trunk road, connecting the existing Cherrymount roundabout on the A32 on the north of the town, to the B80 Tempo Road, on the southeast of the town," he said. "The first 600 metres leading from Cherrymount roundabout utilises the existing carriageway, with local widening being carried out over this stretch. "The remaining 1400 metres provides a new link to the existing Tempo Road adjacent to Burrendale with new roundabouts at its junction with Lawnakilla Way and Lower Chanterhill/Coa Roads." Enniskillen is to get a new £12.85 million road scheme

Global freight volumes decline The International Transport Forum is concerned by the fall in global freight volumes. The latest figures released show that the volumes of freight have dropped considerably over the last few months and the ITF feel that this could be the trend for some time. The ITF said: “Further slow growth in inland freight transport volumes continues to contribute to the sense of weak recovery in domestic demand. The overall picture for global freight is one of growth slowing down. “Total external trade by sea declined through the second quarter in the US, while in the EU trade stagnated, according to preliminary estimates. “The air cargo recovery, noted in our previous brief, has faltered, and volumes are now only 9% above pre-crisis levels in the EU area, compared with 15% in February. “Recovery in the EU and the US has so far been led mainly by exports to Asia. However, the positive trend observed in our previous brief has reversed, and tonnes exported by sea to Asia declined in Q2. Trade with China and ASEAN countries in particular, shows evidence of an economic slowdown.” IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Nightline set to treble Belfast operation Nightline has announced Nightline is expanding its operations in Northern Ireland plans for a massive expansion of its operations in Northern Ireland. The multi-million pound move will treble the size of the current Belfast depot owned and operated by the firm, which is Ireland’s largest independent delivery company. The announcement follows the news of a €5.5 million redevelopment of its Dublin headquarters. The Belfast site is set to be among the most secure such facilities anywhere in Europe and, says Nightline CEO John Tuohy, reflects the need for the firm’s physical presence to grow in order to match the extra business it is generating. “The scale of the increase in size we need in Belfast is an immediate indication of the rise in volumes of parcel traffic which we are seeing pass through our existing Northern Ireland hub. It also illustrates the sort of growth that we’re seeing right across the company. “Our decision will not only result in a much bigger depot but the need for increased staff numbers in order to maintain the superb levels of service which we have built our reputation in Belfast and elsewhere upon.” Mr Tuohy said that Nightline’s initial investment to convert the 50,000 square feet unit warehouse and office unit into a complex capable of supporting its work with leading mobile telecommunications, games consoles, fashion, pharmaceuticals and food brands would amount to several million pounds alone. Preparations will involve ensuring that the site’s infrastructure meets the highest security standards set by the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA). All of Nightline’s facilities in the Irish Republic – at Dublin, Cork, Galway, Waterford, Limerick and Sligo – have such accreditation, giving it one of the highest concentrations of TAPA-certified premises operated by a single carrier anywhere in Europe. In April, Mr Tuohy revealed that his award-winning company had embarked on a redevelopment of its Dublin headquarters which would increase its capacity by 40 per cent. Nightline was formed in 1992. In addition to its seven wholly-owned Irish depots, it opened a UK regional office at Altham, Lancashire last July. The initiative was intended to capitalise on the firm’s growing share of parcel traffic shipped across the Irish Sea. It has already delivered contracts to deliver Ireland-bound freight traffic for retailers, such as Coast, Oasis and Warehouse chains, and Findel Education, the UK’s biggest educational supplies company. Nightline’s UK office has also been instrumental in processing considerable volumes of agricultural engineering exports and had succeeded in putting in place a deal to handle all Irish shipments on behalf of the UK Pallet network.

OMD Waste: a new beginning The company specialise in Skip Hire both commercial and domestic. Many companies have been forced to change their outlook with regards to their business, due to the economic climate that has gripped this nation tighter than any vice could. Unfortunately, some companies have been unable to survive the cull, while others are battling hard to survive. One of the key elements of survival is the ability to diversify into other areas and provide a service that customers want and need. One such company that has managed to do this is PF Dixon Plant Hire run by Paul Dixon, who has been in plant hire for many years and his office manager Joan Quinlan who spoke to us about these challenging times and gave us an insight to the newest string of their bow. “The construction industry has certainly been hit badly, but we never lost the run of ourselves during the boom. We have spent the last 12months getting all our plant serviced and updated so that we are ready to move when things improve. We have also updated our fleet with rail excavators and dumpers. We decided to hold out here and try to ride out the recession, rather than go abroad to look for work as so many others have done. We have also opened our Waste Recycling Facility under our sister company OMD Waste Recycling which is the fruition of 8 years of planning, which was established in March 2010. We have known for some years that recycling was the way forward and had been trying to get planning permission, unfortunately, it came at the end of the boom. We have invested a lot of money into starting the recycling business and with no grants available, we have had to do it all ourselves. It was a big chance to take, but it is slowly starting to pay off. Waste Management is a very contentious issue and the problem of disposing of unwanted material has caused major hassle for local authorities and the government. Nonetheless, it is an ongoing battle to clean up our environment and OMD Waste is one such company dedicated to the cause. The company specialise in Skip Hire both commercial and domestic, supplying skips from 2cy to 35cy roll on roll off skips to building contractors, businesses and the general public. Joan revealed that the company has invested heavily in meeting the required standards to be able to operate such a facility and its something that they have worked very hard on since this end of the business was established last year. The huge facility caters for all types of materials that pass through, which is hand picked and waste is segregated into categories for recycling, i.e. glass, timber, metal, plastics, etc. We have all the relevant permits from Waste Facility Permit to Collection permits and every skip can be traced from source to disposal, which is a necessity these days as customers are responsible for where waste is disposed of and want to make sure they are dealing with a reputable company. Each skip can be delivered and collected, with numerous skip lorries operating on a daily basis; no customer will have to wait too long for delivery or collection which is normally on the day requested. “This is a competitive business and it is essential to provide an efficient service at a reasonable rate that is affordable to the customers, otherwise they will just go elsewhere”. The Joint Waste Management Plan covering the period 2006 to 2011was adopted in June 2006 and reflects changes in population, waste arising and infrastructural requirements. The objective of the plan is to secure the best environmental management of waste generated in the region and OMD Waste Recycling Ltd is leading the charge to implement a number of these principles.

Onwards and Upwards Transpec Truck and Trailer Parts, one of the Country’s most successful all makes truck and trailer parts distributors have recently moved to a much larger, higher profile location on the Ballysimon Road in Limerick. Irish Trucker Magazine decided to take a look for themselves. Transpec initially opened their Limerick branch in April 2010 and since then have made significant progress in the midwest region. Transpec’s Managing Director Richard Sheehan commented “We opened up a small branch in Limerick last year consisting of a warehouse and a tradecounter. Over time, the tradecounter business has increased significantly and we have steadily been increasing our turnover month by month. Our decision to move premises was two-fold; firstly our existing warehouse was beginning to become a little small for our needs, and secondly the tradecounter was tiny with little or no retail space to display products on shelves. In August, a premises I had been eyeing up for a long time became available right out on the busy Ballysimon Road so we jumped at it. We’re still in Rosmadda Business Park, but now we’re right out on the main road. We’re very confident that having road frontage in this prominent location will ensure that we enjoy an increase in passing trade. The new building is almost 3 times the size of our old place and gives us a much larger and brighter trade counter area making it far more comfortable for our customers. There is also ample parking for trucks and cars. We officially moved into the new premises on 1st October.” Asked by Irish Trucker if now was actually a good time for expansion given our country’s precarious economic environment, Sheehan said. “The economic situation we all find ourselves is challenging right now, but we’ve actually grown our business in the past 12 months. It’s certainly not something we’re taking for granted but it is a trend we fully intend to continue. We are totally committed to the mid-west area and now is as good a time as any to make this move.” He further added “We now have 3 full time staff working in Limerick. Damien McKeogh, Brian Byrne and Pat O’Dwyer. Our main catchment area is Limerick, Tipperary, Kerry, Clare and Galway. What we offer our customers is really simple – we endeavour at all times to stock an unrivalled range of truck and trailer parts, to offer them at a very competitive price and to ensure that we provide an excellent service at all times. It’s not easy, or indeed possible, to always get the three elements right, but we do try!” “Our range of products has increased significantly over the past couple of years, continued Sheehan, “and the effect of this is that we needed more physical warehouse space in Limerick. Truck parts constitute a major part of our business and we are now distributors for the entire range of Diesel Technic Truck and Bus parts.” Diesel Technic is a world leading brand and is synonymous with quality and value for money. We are delighted to be associated with the brand and stock a large range of parts in both our Dublin and Limerick branches. Other brands that we have recently taken on include Frasle. Fras-le are a huge multi-national organisation with headquarters in Brazil. They manufacture high quality brake pads and are well known throughout the world. They are OE suppliers to companies such as Volvo, Mercedes and Arvin Meritor. A few months ago Transpec concluded a deal with gives us exclusivity to their range of products for the entire island of Ireland”. Elaborating on the deal further Sheehan says “We see great potential for this brand in Ireland. Fras-le are determined to become a major player in Europe and such are prepared to offer great support to us to ensure we succeed. The quality is excellent and the price makes it a very attractive proposition. We can offer great value to factors and indeed commercial garages who wish to take on this range of pads and clutch facings.” Another notable agency we’ve taken on is Dinex exhausts. We now carry the full range of Dinex exhausts, silencers, tail pipes and clamps in both Limerick and Dublin. We’ve also recently introduced the Trailerline® brand into Ireland. Trailerline® is a BPW owned brand that currently includes brake pads but will soon include Brake Discs, shocks and a number of other parts for trucks and trailers. All Trailerline® parts will be available only through Transpec in Dublin and Limerick. Transpec, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of BPW the market leading trailer axle and suspension manufacturer, has been operating in Ireland for the past 11 years and Limerick is their second branch. Asked why they chose Limerick as a location Sheehan responded, “Geographically Limerick is ideal for us. It’s fairly central and most of Munster is within easy striking distance. It’s also a major city with a high concentration of potential customers. From a purely personal point of view, Limerick is like a home from home for me. Both of my parents are from Limerick. My Father is from Garryowen and my Mother is originally from Foynes. Most of my relations and extended family still live in Limerick so I’m delighted to involved in the City. Finally, we asked Richard if there was any further expansion on the cards. “We have a clear vision as regards where we see ourselves in the future and definitely expansion is part of our plans. For the remainder of the year though we’re concentrating on Dublin and Limerick but watch this space in 2012…….” Transpec can be contacted in Limerick on 061-437932 or in Dublin on 014642002. Our Limerick branch is located in Rosmadda Business Park on the Ballysimon Road (Directly across from the entrance to Hegarty metals and Shannon Transport)The tradecounter is open Monday – Friday from 8:30am -5:30pm and on Saturdays from 9:00am – 1:00pm. Tyre failure common in NCT

Drivers urged to take healthy option

Motorists are not keeping an eye on their tyres Over 100,000 vehicles have failed the NCT due to problems with their tyres, it has been revealed. The Road Safety Authority revealed the statistic at the launch of a campaign to increase awareness of tyre safety. The Irish Tyres Industry Association has said a lack of knowledge and the economy means people are paying less attention to the condition of their tyres. Its members will be giving free tyre checks and tyre safety kits during Road Safety Week, which runs from 10-16 October.

Volvo Trucks are now including of Volvo Truck’s driver development programme diet and health as part of its driver development programme, emphasising that they affect both personal quality of life and the driver’s professional level of competence. "We give them tips and suggestions on how to live a healthier lifestyle," says Lucien van Zuilen, driver trainer at Volvo Trucks in Holland. "It isn't exactly rocket science; rather, it's all about making drivers aware of how they can eat and live more healthily. Eat breakfast, cycle to work instead of driving, and try to eat more vegetables. We also offer suggestions on what type of training can be done inside the truck cab. The solution lies in the small details." During the course, the participants also learn how different types of food affect not only their physique but also their mood and ability to concentrate. The average European long-haul driver has a BMI* of 28, which is just two small points away from the official classification for obesity. This was revealed in a survey conducted by Volvo Trucks of 2,300 drivers throughout Europe. So why is health amongst truck drivers so poor? In 2009, Inge Van Bogerijen from the Institute of Sports and Health at Utrecht University investigated the subject and reported her findings in a special study*. She came to the conclusion that truck drivers find themselves in a very specific and unique environment, both physically and socially. "The working environment out on the roads is an obstacle to a healthier lifestyle among drivers. In my study I saw that many are willing to live a better lifestyle but that they feel they have limited practical opportunities to do so," says Inge Van Bogerijen. The foremost reason for poor health seems to be the high-fat food served at truck stops, combined with the sedentary nature of the work itself and the chronic lack of time due to long working days. "There is healthier food available at roadside eateries, but the problem is that this is often much more expensive. Drivers are either not willing or in many cases simply not able to pay so much," says Inge Van Bogerijen. "What's more, truck-stops don't exactly invite training and exercise. There is often no gym on site and inside the cab there is obviously very little scope for physical exercise owing to the limited space." However, improving driver health is not only the responsibility of the driver, there is a lot employers can do to help too. Dutch haulage firm Nijhof-Wassink is among the growing number of companies to realise the importance of working preventively on health. The company allows its employees to take part in a programme that focuses on a healthier lifestyle and in return they get healthier drivers. "This is a win-win situation where the driver is healthier and more active. At the same time, we reduce costs," explains Jogé Nijhof, part owner of Nijhof-Wassink. "We gain since our employees take less time off sick. One day off for ill-health costs a lot of money, and you can get a whole lot of coaching for that money. If you have satisfied employees, everything works so much more smoothly. It's as simple as that." The bottom line is that haulage companies have a vested interested in their drivers' well-being. "Healthy employees are less tired, more keen to work and more concentrated," says Lucien. "Investing in one's employees is thus a long-term and profitable move, because just as one might invest in a safe truck, it's important to also invest in a safe driver." Health and First Aid is just one of the courses within the Volvo Trucks driver development program. So far, more than 35,000 drivers in Europe have participated in the various Volvo Trucks' driver development training programmes that are offered in cooperation with the dealers.

Circle Oil profits soar Profit at Circle Oil soared by 316 per cent, and turnover rose by 35 per cent in the first half of the year, fuelled by rising oil prices. Net profit after tax was $8.7 million, compared with $2.09 million in 2010. The company said turnover was $28.7 million in the first six months of the year. Gross profit was $9.94 million, compared to $6.84 million in the first half of 2010, and operating profit rose to $8.28 million in 2011, compared with $4.6 million a year earlier. The oil price achieved rose 40 per cent to $104.81 per barrel of oil, while gas prices increased by 27 per cent to $8.65 Mscf. Circle said three gas wells were successfully tested in Morocco during the period, and construction was underway on new pipeline infrastructure. Chief executive Professor Chris Green said this should result in a “healthy increase” in revenues in 2012. In Egypt, one oil producing and two water injector wells were successfully drilled during the period. Prof Green said the company had made “excellent progress” in the six-month period. “Our daily production levels in Egypt are anticipated to increase when the associated gas goes into production, augmenting the existing oil production. In Morocco, the second drilling campaign has added four new gas discoveries,” he said. “In Oman, results from our recent Block 52 marine survey have identified a number of significant prospects. These will support our stated objective of farming out part of this licence to a suitable partner.”

Ireland to host 2013 European Parking Congress Parking company representatives from all over the world will be in Dublin for the 16th biennial European Parking Congress to be held here in 2013. The Congress was won for Dublin by the Irish Parking Association (IPA), the representative trade association for the car parking sector in Ireland. The announcement that the European Congress is to be held in Ireland was welcomed last night by the Minister for Transport, Mr Leo Varadkar TD. Ireland was selected as the host country for this prestigious event by the European Parking Association (EPA) following a competitive bid process involving all EPA member associations. The Congress will be held in the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) on 12th-14th September 2013. The Congress will bring up to 500 high-spending delegates from over two dozen countries to Dublin. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Leo Varadkar TD, welcomed the announcement stating: “I’m delighted that the European Parking Association has chosen to hold the 16th European Parking Congress in Dublin. I would also like to congratulate the Irish Parking Association for making this possible. The decision to bring the Conference here is a recognition that, even in these difficult times, Dublin remains a European city of the first rank, with first rate facilities and the ability to attract major Europe-wide events”. In the current challenging economic climate, the importance of attracting large-scale international conferences to Dublin is of major significance and recent research by Tourism Ireland has estimated the average contribution of each conference delegate at €1,500 per visitor. The suitability of the Convention Centre was a major influence in the IPA winning the competition to host the EPA Congress. The 2013 EPA Congress, whose theme will be ‘Towards 2020- Intelligent Transport Management’ will include modules on economic, technological, environmental, and regulatory factors affecting the European parking industry and the urban mobility sector in general. The Congress will feature expert speakers from industry and academic backgrounds, from across Europe and beyond, who will gather to share their views and opinions to an audience of delegates from the parking sectors of all of the major European member associations.

Major rail investment being made Public Transport Minister, Alan Kelly, recently announced a €6 million investment programme for Irish Rail. The funding will go to line speed improvements, further rollout of WiFi on the train service and important fuel saving technology to reduce costs. The funding is coming from reallocated capital within the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport and is being spent on works that will be completed by year end. “It is vital that our limited funds are spent well and give value to the exchequer. If we want to offer people a proper level of public transport this will require investment. This funding will greatly enhance both the customer service Irish Rail offers as well as equipping them with the ability to reduce costs in the future. It’s a win-win,” stated Minister Kelly. Under the initiative, Investment an additional €1million will be funding received by Irish Rail spent on improving journey times between Portarlington and Dublin, €1million on ticket validating machines and €300K for the additional roll-out of WiFi on 63 rail cars and €600,000 for order point heaters to ensure depots are not unduly affected by a harsh winter. “It is vitally important that public transport remains a strong option for those who commute. This Government is committed to improving the public transport system and the consumer experience. It is vital that every penny is stretched to the maximum benefit of the users of public transport,” concluded Minister Kelly. IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Galway Council to pay for noncompletion of bypass The High Court has ruled that Galway County Council must pay back more than one million euro to a building company after a bypass was never completed. O’Malley Construction won a ruling that will see the firm being repaid €1.1 million, which was money paid as part of a condition of planning permission secured to develop a site at Barna. The company paid €1.1 million as a contribution towards construction of a 2.7km bypass of the village of Barna, but just 460 metres of the bypass have been constructed. The company claimed it was required to pay the money to the council as a condition of securing planning permission for 148 dwellings and five commercial units at “An Creggan” in Barna. The judge held that as the bypass had not been completed, the council was “not entitled to require the developer to make a contribution to works that ultimately did not benefit the company’s development”.

Insurance premiums to rise by 2% A two per cent levy is set to be introduced on motor insurance in a bid to pay for the millions that have been invested to meet Quinn Insurance losses. The Insurance (Amendment) Bill, which was recently passed by 97 votes to 42 in the Dail, puts €240 million of public money into an insurance compensation fund to allow the company to be sold to a joint venture of the Liberty Group and Anglo Irish Bank. Minister for Finance Michael Noonan said that the primary purpose of the Bill “is not to save jobs in Quinn Insurance. That was done as soon as the Liberty Group decided to put private sector money into Quinn Insurance and guarantee” that the jobs would be secured.

Nightline gets Royal lift for first year success Ireland’s biggest independent parcel carrier has revealed that a little lift from the Queen has helped its UK operation to an outstanding first year success. Nightline has claimed a string of major contract wins since opening a regional office in Lancashire last July. UK Managing Director Geremy Ruffin has described how the firm had handled “very significant volumes” of shipments across the Irish sea by British firms after launching the operation out of Altham, Lancashire. He said that trade was given an additional spur by the May visit to the Irish Republic by the Queen. “Our first year in Lancashire has exceeded our expectations. We obviously did a great amount of preparation before we started business to gauge the potential but even we have been surprised by the number of companies looking for an efficient, specialist alternative carrier to handle their Irish shipments. “Not only did we open at a time when firms, including some of the UK’s biggest retailers, were trying to expand Irish custom but we became very much busier after the Queen’s visit to Dublin in May.” Mr Ruffin said that in the three weeks which followed the historic trip by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, actual shipments had increased by 23 per cent while sales enquiries had gone up by 70 per cent over the same period. He said that the surge capped a remarkable year which had delivered contracts to deliver Ireland-bound freight traffic for retailers, such as the Aurora Group, which includes the Coast, Oasis and Warehouse chains, and Findel Education, the UK’s biggest educational supplies company. Mr Ruffin said Nightline had also processed considerable volumes of agricultural engineering exports and had succeeded in putting in place a deal to handle all Irish shipments on behalf of UK Pallets. “We are well on the way to achieving our target of moving 60,000 parcels a week to Ireland, something which we feel fully justifies our decision to set up the UK office. Combined with continued development in Ireland, Nightline really is going from strength to strength.” Nightline is responsible for moving one-in-four of all parcels on Irish roads through seven facilities in Dublin, Belfast, Sligo, Waterford, Cork, Limerick and Galway. In the last few months, it has announced a trebling in the size of its operation in Belfast and plans for a €5.5 million/£5 million (*) expansion at its Dublin headquarters because of an increase in parcel volumes which it is handling.

Haulbowline clean-up will cost €40m The Government is expected to approve a €40 million package to begin the clean-up of Haulbowline - one of Ireland’s largest toxic waste dumps. After years of surveys of the contaminated former Irish Steel / Irish Ispat plant in Cork Harbour, the Cabinet is poised to approve the setting aside of €20m in the 2012 budget and €20m in the 2013 budget to tackle the site on Haulbowline island, according to recent reports. The site contains slag heaps — byproducts of the steel-making process — including the deadly carcinogen chromium 6 and a number of heavy metals. Simon Coveney, Minister for Agriculture, Mariine & Foods stated "Despite the difficult economic conditions, we are planning to set aside €40m over the next two years to clean up this site. "This is a strong signal of intent — a strong statement that we are serious about tacking this issue."

Taking the strain out of abnormal loads M-tranz (UK and Ireland) is Ireland’s premier abnormal loads management specialist. Since its inception two years ago, M-tranz has become the name to trust when it comes to the organisation and safe movement of abnormal loads in the UK, Ireland and Europe. event support, marshalling, site organisation, vehicle movement and pedestrian control are all part of the service, while a vehicle and load CAD drawing service is also available, showing axle weights and load feasibility. M-tranz was established as recently as 2009. As a relatively-new company, it brought many fresh ideas to the table regarding how abnormal and oversized loads could and should be transported across the UK, Ireland and Europe. This innovative, dynamic approach enabled the company to quickly develop many of the UK’s, Ireland’s and Europe’s most-respected abnormal load hauliers as partners. The burgeoning list of satisfied customers includes Daytona Heavy Haulage, Fisher Engineering Ltd., Collett Transport, Ashleigh Contracts, Johnston Heath International, Plantspeed and a well-known Formula 1 team! Stephen Monaghan had worked with abnormal loads for many years but it was only in late 2008 / early 2009 that he spotted a niche in the market for supplying Irish hauliers with a reliable, local and friendly service to obtain abnormal load authorisations for the UK for the movement of heavy plant and machinery. He spent many months refining his system of notifying the relevant authorities and building up good working relationships with all councils, highways agencies and police force abnormal load contacts. Soon he was inundated with requests and the first pilot car / escort vehicle was acquired in September 2009. Mtranz has developed into supplying customers with wide load, high load, long load and heavy load permits for all European territories and has even supplied permits for countries such as Turkey, Russia, Iraq and Syria. Having forged excellent contacts, the company provides a premium, hassle-free, allencompassing service. Growth, of course, has necessitated considerable investment in equipment. M-tranz today operates two fullyequipped, legally-compliant pilot cars in Ireland and two more in the UK, meaning all UK and Irish ports are covered by its services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A friendly, positive approach to customer service has been instrumental in a 1000% growth in the customer base each year since the company was formed. By continuing to offer the most efficient and friendly service possible, and with ongoing investment in state-of-the-art equipment, M-tranz will no doubt IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Highway maintenance is a speciality of Swords Auto

Providing bespoke TM solutions The professionalism and expertise of Swords Auto was called upon recently to build a new state-of-the-art emergency ISU (Incident Support Unit) for the M50. Irish Trucker contacted company managing director Brian O’Neill to discuss the finer details of this bespoke vehicle and also to take a look at Swords Auto’s vast range of Traffic Management solutions.

S

words Auto is Ireland’s premiere supplier of traffic management tools and materials. The Dublin company offers for sale or hire a range of state-of-theart, specially-equipped, self-drive vehicles designed to cater for all aspects of Traffic Management. It also provides training services for the use of this equipment and general Traffic Management procedures. As qualified auto electricians, they

can supply and fit a variety of quality products to any vehicle in accordance with a client’s express specifications. Swords Auto boasts over 20 years’ auto electrical experience and was the obvious choice when M50 Concession Limited (the company charged with looking after the operation and maintenance of the M50 motorway) was seeking a partner to design and build a brand-new, purpose-build motorway Incident Support Unit.

The resultant Ford Transit – based on a 350 LWB 2.4 litre TDCi – is the sole ISU patrolling the M50 and will be on call 24 hours a day to provide emergency assistance to users of the country’s busiest motorway. “We are delighted to be providing this service in our home city,” said MD Brian O’Neill at the launch of the vehicle. “For any incident – be that a breakdown or an accident – the ISU will provide a first line of support IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

We need somewhere to store all the gear like fire extinguishers, wet gear, brushes, shovels etc, as well as an area for debris collection. We also had to take into consideration the mileage this vehicle will be covering. As this will be the only ISU on the M50, we designed it so that a new chassis can be placed under it. The vehicle will be re-chassised in 18 months. The whole concept has been carefully planned from the start. We started with the chassis and cab and then purpose built the body.” Swords Auto is the only crash cushion manufacturer in Ireland. The company started out in 1987 as Swords Auto Electric, specialising in commercial vehicle electrics. In 1992, sister company Swords Auto Truck & Van Hire was established, specialising in the supply of All types of vehicles can be fitted out to specification commercial vehicles, particularly municipal vehicles to local authorities. The company’s renowned expertise in electrics was crucial when it came to securing this contract. As Swords Auto specialises 50/50 between body building and electrics – and has a proven track record working on vehicles that carry big loads and are heavy on power – they were an automatic choice. Swords Auto was recommended to M50 Concessions by Transroute, for whom they worked on the port tunnel. Baird Brothers - for all your transport needs Co. Down-based Baird Brothers Transport continues to go from strength to strength after over 40 years in the transport industry.

B

aird Brothers Transport is a family-run business which has been operating throughout Ireland and beyond since 1969. Boasting an extensive knowledge and over four decades of experience in all aspects of the trucking industry, the Banbridge, Co. Down-based company has established a tradition of value-for-money, reliability and total dedication to customer service. While Baird Brothers offer a complete haulage service, they specialise in bulk transport and operate a large fleet of liquid tankers and container carriers. “We originally specialised in flat trailer work, but then branched into bulk tanker work and that accounts for a large percentage of our business IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

now,” explains company director Colin Baird. “We have 60 tankers which are used for transporting everything from animal feedstuff to chemicals. But we still consider ourselves as general hauliers because we also operate flat and tipper trailers.” Baird Brothers Transport has come a long way since the late William Baird started out with a single Albion truck 42 years ago. Following William’s passing in 1983, his wife Irene and children Colin, Kyle, Mark and Caroline took over the running of the business. Since the mid-1990s, the company fleet has grown from six trucks to 21. The Baird fleet, which is dominated by top-of-the-range Volvo, DAF and Scania models, are not only

a familiar sight on Irish roads, but on the roads of Britain and Europe as well. “We have customers north and south of the border as well as in the UK and Europe. We do frequent runs to places like Belgium, Holland, France and Germany. No job is too big or too small,” says Colin. Asked why Volvo, DAF and Scania are the preferred choice with Baird Brothers, Colin replied: “It all comes down to how reliable and economical a truck is and from our experience, they are best trucks that are out there. Also, because we carry out our maintenance work in-house, it helps to have trucks our mechanics are familiar with and they are well familiar with Volvo, DAF and Scania at this stage.”

The Baird Brothers fleet is an impressive sight

All of Baird Brothers’ drivers are highly skilled, competent, experienced and fully aware of the importance of customer service. They also take great pride in the trucks they drive. within easy reach of Ireland’s two largest cities, and is also close to the shipping ports of Belfast, Dublin, Warrenpoint and Larne. “We are ideally located for the type of work we do. We are less than an hour away from Belfast and less than two hours away from Dublin. And we are close to all the major ports which is a big thing when you’re running loads to the UK and the Continent,” Colin continues.

Like every other transport company, Baird Brothers hasn’t been immune from the recession with Colin admitting that ever-increasing fuel costs have put a considerable strain on the familyrun operation. “The price of diesel is putting a lot of companies to the wall and it’s all about trying to keep your head above water for the haulage industry as a whole right now. “It’s a huge issue for every haulier.

We fill up about 90 per cent of the time south of the border because it works out cheaper. But diesel is still very expensive. The rising fuel costs has led to a huge amount of undercutting in the industry. It’s a dog eat dog world out there. But hopefully we’ll continue to stay going and come through this recession fairly okay.” Recession or no recession, the Baird family are committed to maintaining the highest possible standards. They have no intention of resting on their laurels and are focused on continuing to grow their company. “We’ve a lot of customers who have stuck with us through thick and thin. That’s very encouraging and gives us hope going forward. We’ve grown our fleet and expanded our services over the past 15 years or so and, if at all possible, we’d like to grow it even more,” he concludes.
