PUBLIC BATHS
|CONNECTING PERTH’S WATERFRONT|
/INTRODUCTION The development of the public realm in cities could greatly improve existing infrastructures & quality of life for its’ residents. In the past, places such as markets and theatres, serves as meeting places. Hoewever, in the 21st century, cities are now experiencing declining densities and suburban sprawl. The rapid privatisation of home-life, work-life 19TH CENTURY THEATRES and service activities in the modern (AMBASSADOR’S THEATRE) world resulted in increased interest in public spaces and activities. This project aims to identify problems and opportunities in Perth city (Western Australia) in order to propose solutions for urban revitalization so as to encourage a bigger crowd to the city. Proposed desgin would improve the course of daily activities in the city and also revitalise declining or discontinuous spaces from an urban, social, or 21ST CENTURY PUBLIC PARKS economic perspective. / A B S T R A C T Perth city’s waterfront has layers of hidden history buried under its’ reclaimed land. It was a former city baths area dating back to the 1880s and was a place for crowd to gather for exhibitions and other recreational purposes. 1900s: ‘WHITE CITY’ AMUSEMENT PARK, SWAN RIVER
1880s: PUBLIC BATHS, CRAWLEY BATHS
12
This central communal area with a scenic view is presently not used to its full potential. One factor causing this may be due to the monofunctional activities in the city. Shopping, food and work/school are the main reasons people would go to the city for. Therefore, crowd is concentrated around Hay Street or Murray Street. Futhermore, the topography of the city, causing the city centre to be higher in elevation, cause the high skyscrapers to block the view to the waterfront.

This proposal derives from the concept of “Peeling back Layers of Perth”. Proposed project aims to incorporate our past with the future by including a variety of communal activities, mainly Public Baths spreading 81.5m in length along Riverside Drive. Design Principles are guides for the bath design to meet certain qualities which helps to improve public’s experience when using proposed design. These principles also help to create a human-scaled design to achieve a non-imposing structure in a city with mostly high-rise structures. Remains of historical items which were dug up at the construction of the newly erected Elizabeth Quay (bottom-left image) would also be incorporated in the design as decking materiality for environmental & historical reasons.

Located along Riverside Drive, Bath platform design is elongated in length but stays at a low height so as not to impose into the existing landscape of high-rise buildings at the background. It trancends lower towards water-level (of Swan River), further adapting to existing urban fabric and encourages users to interact with the waterfront. Indoor and outdoor baths allow a variety of acitivities to take place in different climates or situations. Waterfront activities creates new activities in a monofunctional city such as Perth, encouraging a bigger crowd to visit the city for purposes other than work or school. This chapter explains how the Baths would be built and before and after representations of the waterfront.

EXISTING URBAN FABRIC DISCOURAGES PUBLIC FROM E N G A G I N G THEMSELVES WITH THE SWAN RIVER. THIS IS CAUSED BY THE LACK OF ACTIVITIES OR PLATFORM ALLOWING PUBLIC TO INTERACT WITH THE RIVER. EXISTING ROADS & CYCLING/JOGGING TRACKS CREATES AN OPPORTUNITY TO ATTRACT A LARGER CROWD TO THIS AREA.
