COINS, MEDALS AND MEDALLIONS 150 A Celtic Glasgow charity cup gold medallion the 9ct gold oval fob with blue enamel border ‘1915 - 16 Glasgow Charity Cup’ Glasgow coat of arms, the reverse inscribed ‘Celtic Football Club’ around red enamelled shield with lion rampant named Charles Shaw below, with simple ring suspension 17.9g Note: Charles Shaw was signed from Queen’s Park Rangers, for whom he played 223 games, in May 1913 for £250. He made his debut for Celtic in a 2-1 Glasgow Charity Cup win at Third Lanark on May 6th, 1913. With the fragile looking Shaw (five foot six inches) in goal, Celtic’s defensive record improved dramatically. As a measure of his ability, in the 1913/14 season remarkably he conceded only 14 goals in 38 games with 26 clean sheets along the away - a record for Celtic to this day. He became Celtic captain in September 1916 following “Sunny” Jim Young’s retirement and his commanding voice was heard throughout games. After a time on loan at Clyde, Shaw was released in the summer of 1925. He played 436 games for Celtic, amassing 240 clean sheets and winning six league titles (1914-1917, 1919 and 1922) and two Scottish Cup finals (1914 and 1923).
