suitable and the shipping company turned to jewellers for inspiration. The brooch shown here is typical of the quality of the craftsmanship involved in the making of the brooch that would reflect the craftsmanship of the ship concerned - of course different scales of manufacturing and skills required but with each craft ensuring the best result. The diamonds and rubies being very effective in displaying the colours of the Shipping Line pennant. Naess shipping was founded by Erling Dekke Naess, although he had experience in shipping prior to that, mainly with whaling and then moving to tankers and controlling various companies under different names, Naess Shipping came into being in 1957. He established Anglo American Shipping Co. in 1958 and being registered in Bermuda could fly the British Flag. There is debate in the family as to which ship was launched at the time of the presentation of this brooch; Naess Favorita or Naess Pride both launched 1961, the Favorita has been renamed several times and is now known as Xing Hai.

49 FD413/53 SUFFRAGETTE INTEREST - A gold and enamelled amethyst pendant The cushion cut amethyst multi-claw set, the outer frame of scrolling green and white enamel scrolls with small diamond highlights, with screw off brooch fitting and enamelled bale 40mm long Note: Jewellery is not just a finishing touch to an outfit but a powerful means of expression, enabling the wearer to make strong statements on their religious or political view without saying a word. The women campaigning for suffrage in Britain pre-WWI were masters in their use of jewellery as a tool for potent political expression The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst and took a more militant view on the campaign for women’s suffrage than other groups from the period. By 1906, the WSPU had become well-known for their extreme line - often resulting to arson, vandalism and hunger strikes to promote their cause - all covered extensively by the national press. In 1908 the government passed The Public Meeting Act, ‘to prevent disturbance of Public Meetings’ that effectively made the disruptive ‘Deeds not Words’ of the WSPU illegal. Support for the WSPU had swelled over the years, something that did not cease even after the threat of arrest and imprisonment. In the same year as The Public Meeting Act was passed, the group devised an innovative way for supporters to show their allegiance by developing ‘corporate’ colours purple (for dignity), white (for purity) and green (for hope). It did not take long for the colours to take hold and in June of 1908 30,000 women displayed their colours in a demonstration in London’s Hyde Park - thought to have been watched by up to half avmillion spectators - a dramatic scene in purple, white and green.

This demonstration marked the beginning of a remarkable and persistent campaign for women’s suffrage that continued until the outbreak of war in 1914, at which point the members of the WSPU vowed to concentrate on the war effort. In 1918 women over 30 were granted the vote, with the voting age dropping to 21 years old in 1928.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR BUYERS Historically many gemstones have been subjected to a variety of treatments to enhance their appearance. Certain enhancements, such as heating, are commonly used to improve colour or transparency in rubies and sapphires. Emeralds are also frequently treated, usually with oils or resin, for the same purpose. Other methods, including staining, dyeing, coating or irradiation, may have been used on other gemstones including Jade and associated hardstone that may have been bleached (usually in acid), polymer/resin filled or dyed, or a combination of any of these treatments. The international jewellery trade has generally accepted these methods. Heat enhancement of colour is usually permanent, however, in some cases; this may have an impact on the durability of the gemstone. Gemstones that have been oiled may require re-oiling after a number of years in order to retain their optimum appearance. It is, in suitable cases, Lyon & Turnbull’s policy to obtain gemmological reports from internationally recognised gemmological laboratories describing certain gemstones sold by Lyon & Turnbull. In the event that Lyon & Turnbull have been given, or have obtained, reports for any lot in the sale these reports will be mentioned in the catalogue description. However, it is not feasible for Lyon & Turnbull to obtain a gemmological report for each gemstone offered for sale by Lyon & Turnbull. If no report is published in the catalogue prospective buyers should assume that the gemstones may have been enhanced by some method. However, please note that there may not be consensus between different laboratories on the degrees or types of treatment for any particular gemstone. Prospective buyers should be aware that Lyon & Turnbull’s pre-sale estimates assume that gemstones may have been subjected to such treatments. ALL DIMENSIONS, WEIGHTS ARE APPROXIMATE. DIAMOND GRADING TERMS Where printed in the catalogue, estimated diamond grades for colour and clarity are intended as guides for prospective buyers. Lyon & Turnbull do not guarantee these estimated grades due to the limitations of mounts and settings. DIAMOND COLOUR

670 FE430/54 A Victorian beaker Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh 1882, of tapered cylindrical form with reeded girdles and engraved motto ‘Do Richt and Fear Nocht’, the lower section of the body with engraved acanthus leaves and presentation inscription, on a simple foot 18cm high, 9.4oz Note: The engraved inscription ‘do richt and fear nocht’ has two Scottish connections. The first is connected to the name Paton, the person who presented this goblet to Archibald N Skelton

was Sir Joseph Noel Paton. He was connected with the Skelton family in the 19th century in relation to Skelton’s work on Mary Stuart. The other unconnected but with strong Scottish connections is for the celebrations in Kelso during their civic week. At the installation ceremony the Provost sashes the Henchmen, entrusts them with the Kelso flag and tells the Kelso Laddie to ‘do richt and fear nocht’ Their job is to return the flag on the Saturday ‘unsullied and untarnished’ Sir Joseph may have been inspired by the thought and principals behind the event and the motto to feel it was a correct and fitting statement for the young man to grow up with and adhere to in future life

672 FE129/1 A pair of reproduction Scottish disc end spoons Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh 1931, with additional zig zag assay scrape, compressed finial above disc terminal engraved ‘BB’ with slightly later date ‘1578’ bellow, the compressed lower cartouche with semi spiralled decoration, above large foliate decoration to stem, the join of stem and bowl with long V shaped foliate detail with horizontal and vertical decoration below 18cm long, 62g each Note: These spoons were produced by the descendant of the original Boyd family who commissioned the Charles II examples in the mid-17th century. It is unknown how many copies were made but it is known they were given to various family members as christening gifts, some with engraved names and dates others - such as these - plain. The original owner, Bessy Boyd came from two important Glasgow families; Bessy was daughter of Archbishop James Boyd of Glasgow, who was one of three Protestant Archbishops appointed by King James VI to Glasgow Cathedral. A memorial stained glass window (by Ballantine & Allan) of Archbishop James Boyd can be found in the north wall of Lower Church. Archbishop Boyd was not the only important member of the clergy in the family, Bessy’s brother Robert Boyd had a distinguished career in Scotland and France and held many important positions including professor at Vertuile and Saumur, Principal of Glasgow University, professor of Divinity at Edinburgh University and minister of Paisley Abbey. Bessy was twice married - firstly to Patrick Maxwell, merchant in Glasgow, who was 3rd son of John Maxwell 4th of Auldhouse and related to the Maxwell’s of Pollock House. Patrick died in 1623 and Bessy later married her cousin, also a Boyd. The date of spoons and Patrick Maxwell’s death mean these spoons must relate to Bessy’s second marriage. The close ties between Bessy and the Maxwell family are also seen upon her death as she was buried in the Maxwell family plot within the Glasgow Cathedral graveyard, beside her first husband Patrick. The inscribed date to the terminal, interestingly obliterated on the Mount Stuart example, is obviously of a slightly later date but no obvious

date of importance in Bessy or the Boyd family can be found to which it is retrospectively meant to relate. With gracious thanks to the current owner for the information regarding this spoon which has opened many doors and answered many unknown queries relating to this and the other Boyd disc end.
