A Collection of Early Italian Maiolica Property of a Gentleman of Title 1 FG131/4 PAIR OF FRENCH OR ITALIAN TIN GLAZED APOTHECARY JARS PROBABLY FROM THE SAME SERIES POSSIBLY CASTEL DURANTE OR FRANCE, 2ND HALF 16TH CENTURY each with an ovoid body tapering to a flared foot and short flaring rim, painted in dark and light blue, yellow, ochre, green and black; one, with a profile portrait of a man in contemporary costume wearing a plumed hat, ruff and doublet with the inscription behind ‘ALFO (N?)SO’ above an inscription ‘ VO:STOMATICO’ on a label below; the other jar with an unidentified coat of arms with curled framing ribbons and an indistinct landscape in the background and an inscription on a label ‘DIA. LACCA’ all within a fruit wreath (2) 13.5cm diam, 16cm high Provenance: In the collection of the family of the present owners since the late 19th / early 20th century. Entries in the family archives suggest that maiolica was acquired between 1894 and 1916 from three different sources: from G. Donaldson in 1894 (with two items bought from the Spitzer Collection) in 1896 and in 1897; from H.A. Peto in 1899 and from S.M. Crossley in 1908 and in November 1916. If these jars were thought to be Italian at the date they were acquired they would most probably be from this group. Note: See R.E.A. Drey , Apothecary Jars, London, 1978, p.233,236 and 209 for references to contents.

See G.C.Bojani, C.Ravanelli Guidotti, and A. Fanfani, la Donazione Galeazzo Cora - ceramiche dal medioevo al X!X secolo, Fabbri Editori 1985, cat.31, p.130, for a syrup jar with some of the stylistic features of this piece such as the spreading foot and its decoration, ribbons, and loose sketchy landscape behind the coat of arms.

£2,000-3,000

2 FG131/3A ITALIAN MAIOLICA APOTHECARY PILL POT AND MATCHING COVER PESARO OR CASTEL DURANTE, CIRCA 1579 the squat bulbous body with a domed cover and pointed knop, painted in blue, yellow, brown, black, and green in the centre within a panel an oval panel of the female figure of Fortune standing on a sea monster holding a billowing sail aloft, all on a dark blue ground of musical and armorial trophies; bearing the inscription below ‘.P.D.BDELIO.’

Provenance: In the collection of the family of the present owners since the late 19th / early 20th century.

Note: For two identical pill pots dated 1580 and covers (but with broken finials) most probably made for the same series see G.C.Bojani, ed. Gaetano Ballardini e la ceramica a Roma: Le maioliche del Museo Artistico Industriale, Florence, Centro Di, 2000, cats 38-9, see also lots 7-8 of this catalogue. See W. Watson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics - The Howard I. and Janet H. Stein Collection and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2001, p.209, cats 80 A and B for an overall discussion of this series decorated with the female figure of Fortune and its attribution. Rackham, Victoria and Albert Museum, Catalogue of Italian Maiolica, 1940. Several other jars from this series are known including one dated 1574 and another dated 1575. ( Elisa P. Several other jars from this series are known including one dated 1574 and another dated 1575. ( Elisa P. Sani, Italian Renaissance Maiolica, V&A Publishing, 2012, cat.195, p.165.)

18 FG131/10 ITALIAN MAIOLICA “TURKISH HORSEMAN” LUSTRE DISH DERUTA, CIRCA 1520 having a sloping rim and a flanged edge, the foot rim pierced with two holes for suspension, the front tin-glazed and painted in dark blue, and yellow lustre, in the centre a mounted bearded turbaned horseman, galloping to the left, barefoot, wearing a long flowing outer garment with an extended collar and carrying a standard with ribbons fluttering behind, the border in sections of scale pattern, palmettes and radial stems with buds 42cm diam, 8.4cm high Provenance: In the collection of the family of the present owners since the late 19th / early 20th century. Entries in the family archives suggest that maiolica was acquired between 1894 and 1916 from three different sources: from G. Donaldson in 1894 (with two items bought from the Spitzer Collection) in 1896 and in 1897; from H.A .Peto in 1899 and from S.M. Crossley in 1908 and in November 1916. The majority of the entries with a few exceptions are however unidentifiable Note: Wilson & Sani, Poole and Watson and others have noted that Deruta lustred dishes decorated with Turkish horsemen are less common than polychrome versions. (T. Wilson and E.P.Sani, Le maioliche rinascimentali nelle collezioni della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia, cat.17, p.56, vol 1,Perugia, 2006; J. Poole, Italian Maiolica and incised slipware in the Fitzwilliam Museum, cat. 273, p.200 and colour plate 19, Cambridge,1995; W. Watson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics. The Howard I. and Janet H. Stein Collection and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, cat.69, p.204, Philadelphia, 2000). The border is found on Deruta lustred maiolica from 1510, see D. Thornton and T. Wilson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics: A catalogue of the British Museum collection, cat. 280, note 15, p.472, London , 2009. A polychrome version of this Turkish horseman is attributed to the Mancini worshop 1535-55 and is in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge (See Poole above). However, stylistic differences indicate that the decorator of this lustred dish may have been simply copying from the same printed source and at a little earlier date.

19 FG131/9 DUTCH DELFTWARE POLYCHROME JAR CIRCA 1670 the bulbous ovoid body tapering to faceted broad foot, pale blue tin-glaze, short cylindrical mounted neck and rim edge, painted in yellow, blue and sage green, with Chinese long tailed exotic birds, vegetation and peonies on the body, a band of flower heads and leaves on the upper body and a band of flattened elongated palmettes on the foot, and a small band of geometric flower heads on the neck partially obscured by the mount 37cm diam, 46.5cm high Note: A smaller but similarly shaped baluster vase dated 1678 is in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. See D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Delft : Niederlandische fayence, Klinkhardt & Biermann, 1984,cat. 171. 20 FE627/2 ITALIAN MAIOLICA APOTHECARY BOTTLE FAENZA OR MONTELUPO, MID 16TH CENTURY the slender neck over a globular body decorated alla porcellana in dark and light blue glaze with tendrils, flower heads and leaves with a scroll label ‘de consolida’ for Comfrey 22cm high Note: The decoration on this bottle was inspired by the blue painting on rarely obtained white Chinese translucent hard paste porcelains. According to Drey, the label indicates the bottle was used for storing Comfrey as does, interestingly, the example in the

V&A. (Rackham Plate 34 ,Cat 204 spelling slightly different ). At first glance the decoration here looks quite similar to the V&A Faenza bottle. However, there is also a possibility that the bottle was made at Montelupo in Tuscany. At Montelupo and slightly later in the16th century potters copied patterns such as these scrolling rosettes normally associated with maiolica from Faenza. In particular the manner in which the multiple thin simple scrolls are flanked or tied with leaves and outlined is similar to examples that previously were attributed to Faenza but now are considered to be from Montelupo. See Rudolf E. A. Drey, “Apothecary Jars”, London 1978, p 196 and cat 15A p.44 for an albarello with a traditional Faenza attribution.

The Revel Oddy Collection of Tin-glazed Ceramics Revel Oddy (1922-2011) completed his degree in Spanish and Italian at Cambridge before taking up a post with the Ceramics Department at the V&A. In 1955 he came to Edinburgh as Assistant Keeper in Art and Archeology at the Royal Scottish Museum (now the National Museum of Scotland) and stayed until his retirement as Keeper of Art and Archeology in 1988. Oddy gained an interest in stained glass, textiles and ceramics as a teenager and became interested in tin-glaze and its spread through Europe. As a collector he tended to buy things that interested him personally and assembled his own study collection that was in some way different to the Museum’s holdings, filling in the gaps with his own curatorial eye. He was also instrumental in guiding the Museum’s acquisition policy into studio-based, contemporary work. The Museum’s now extensive collection of studio work is his greatest legacy there, and almost all the contemporary studio items he collected personally are now part of the Museum’s permanent collection.

PRENAIT LE CAFE’ 34cm wide, 72cm high, 25.5cm deep Note: When Napoleon was exiled to the British controlled island of St. Helena in the south Atlantic in 1815, he was housed in Longwood House, a modest single story residence built specifically for this purpose. Simply furnished, it was a far cry from the lavish surroundings he had enjoyed as Emperor. The present lot, by repute used by Napoleon to take his coffee on the terrace of Longwood House, is similar to a side table visible in several paintings made of Napoleon on his deathbed, and a possibly matching table from the original quartet can be seen today in the sitting room at Longwood.

184 FB69/6 COLLECTION OF ENGRAVINGS AFTER WILLIAM ALEXANDER, R.A. DATED 1796 nineteen engravings from ‘An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China’ published by G. Nicol, London, 1796, various sizes, framed Provenance: Property from a Scottish Country House Note: George Leonard Staunton (1737–1801) arrived in China in 1792 as a member of a British delegation whose objective was to improve trade and establish better diplomatic relations with the Chinese, who, at the time, restricted economic activity with foreigners to the port of Canton (Guangzhou). Although the group managed to secure an audience with the Qianlong Emperor - to whom the British envoy Lord Macartney famously refused to kowtow - their mission failed. Staunton kept detailed notes throughout his time in China, and in 1797 published a two-volume account of the visit which was later translated into French and German.

Selected Contents from Lorton Park, Cumbria

Lorton is a village situated near the northern edge of the Lake District National Park, between the market towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, and the spectacular valley and mountains of Loweswater and Buttermere. In earlier days there were two principal residences in the village, Lorton Hall and Lorton Park, but the former is now broken up into separate units, while Lorton Park remains a single family home. The present house is an elegant Grade II listed Georgian building, with substantial grounds. It was owned through much of the Nineteenth Century by Richard Harbord, a Liverpool shipping magnate, whose daughter married the tutor to Prince Arthur, third and best-loved son of Queen Victoria. Prince Arthur, who later became Duke of Connaught, visited the house in 1863, shortly after the death of his father, en route to Balmoral. A massive tree still standing in the grounds was planted by the Prince and bears a plaque commemorating the visit. In recent years the house has been sympathetically restored to provide a suitable setting for many period features, and for a collection of superb furniture, much of which is now being offered for sale as the owner is moving to a smaller and older property.
