Welcome to
Welcome to our autumn Interiors sale! This month we bring you another range of private collections, spanning eclectic Scottish homes to an elegant French chateau. Opening on page 8 we begin with a collection of fine Australian art amassed by the well-known scholar and academic Professor Doeker-Mach, and his late wife, Alice Tay. Previously housed in their chateau in the South of France, the collection of contemporary pieces features several of the most significant names in Australian art of the last fifty years, including William Rose, Stanislaus Rapotec and Andrew Sibley. Our collections then move slightly closer to home, as we feature pieces from the Edinburgh-based dealer, the late Anna Fersch (page 51), as well as a range of furniture, pictures and works of art from Blacket Place in Edinburgh, belonging to one of Britain’s leading jazz singers, Todd Gordon (page 18). We also delved into the world of upholstery and up-cycling this month, when we asked owner of The Original Chair Company, Kate MacKenzie all about her job and what it takes to rework original antique pieces. Turn to page 40 to find out more! We’re doing things a little differently this time around too, as we feature a two day Interiors sale. Dates for your diary are: the Paintings section of the sale Friday 4th October starting at 11am; and the Furniture, Rugs and Works of Art on Saturday 5th October starting at 10am. We look forward to seeing you then!

Highlights from the Sale A Private Collection of European & Australian Fine Art Our fourth Interiors sale features an impressive collection of paintings and sculpture from the scholar Professor Doeker-Mach and his late wife, Alice Tay. As academics in the fields of law and jurisprudence, both travelled extensively across the world, and in particular acquired fine art during their time in Australia. This month we are fortunate enough to be auctioning a range of their contemporary Australian pieces, as well as paintings and sculptures by the artists Gunther Christmann and Lothar Fischer.

The Collection of a Jazz Singer: Todd Gordon This month we’re privileged to be selling items from of one of Britain’s leading jazz singers, Todd Gordon. Todd’s eclectic collection, from his home in Blacket Place, Edinburgh, includes a range of antique furniture, paintings and works of art. Notable pieces include a 17th century oak trestle table, a Scottish longcase clock and a pair of Christopher Fratin candlesticks. See Part 1: Paintings in our sale on Friday 4th October from 11am, and Part II: Furniture and Works of Art being auctioned on Saturday 5th October from 10am.

The Collection of the late Anna Fersh Anna Fersch was a well-known antiques dealer from Edinburgh, who during her time in the trade built up an impressive collection of ceramics, furniture and works of art. In particular she purchased and sold wrought iron, which was arguably something in her blood, being the daughter and grand-daughter of blacksmiths. This October we are fortunate enough to benefit from her good eye and passion for the antique, as we sell a range of pieces from her home in Edinburgh.

Specialist’s Choice This month our Silver specialist, Colin Fraser, picks his favourite pieces from our Interiors sale.
Clocks It has often been said that the beating of a clock is the heart of the home. My first choice, therefore, is not one particular item in the sale, but a nod to the various clocks which we have for auction this month, ranging from impressive longcases to more diminutive mantel clocks. Although longcase clocks have become less popular and fashionable over recent years, they actually represent very good value for money. Examples range from around £300 to £3,000 in this sale, they offer the chance to own a true and classic antique item, which is both functional and decorative. If you haven't quite got the space for one though, then this can equally be said of a mantel or bracket clock too – so there really is something for every home here!

Oak trestle table Pieces of antique oak have always interested me, they have a lovely honest wear and patina that only 300 years of use can bring to furniture of this colour, and this table is no exception. It has an interesting yet simple design and construction, enhanced by the detail of the carved frieze and the turned block legs. The age of the trestle table is also something which fascinates me, when you consider the history and connection furniture like this has with its previous owners, and all the hundreds of years of conversation and celebration it has borne witness to!
Lot 9
St George and Queen Margaret of Denmark Although the sale has a varied collection of modern and traditional paintings, the obvious connection between history and art is perhaps best shown in this 19th century copy of a 15th century original. Queen Margaret was held to be a beautiful, gentle and intelligent royal, being the consort to King James III of Scotland. The image of 'St George and Queen Margaret of Denmark' also has wider Scottish significance too: the image had an important place within the Trinity chapel, and the original is on display in the Scottish National Gallery. The original features as one of several panels, which were commissioned by Edward Bonkil, Provost of the Collegiate Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Edinburgh. This is therefore a scarce opportunity to own a very interesting and attractive item, with a good story to tell!

A Private Collection of European & Australian Fine Art Professor Doeker-Mach is a well-known scholar and academic who has worked in several countries including Australia, India, the United States, Canada and throughout Europe. He is the author and editor and co-editor (with Alice Tay) of twenty books and the author of more than one hundred articles on comparative constitutional and international law (especially treaty law), legal systems and human rights. In addition he was a scholar on the subjects of regionalism and federalism, as well as legal systems in Asia Pacific and the rule of law in Asia. Alice Tay was the University of Sydney’s Challis Professor of Jurisprudence for twenty-six years and was committed to law as an instrument of justice and protector of democracy. Tay taught the first Australian university course on the subject and published widely on it. Justice and jurisprudence – the philosophy of law - was her intellectual passion. The following lots were collected by both Professor DoekerMach and Alice Tay over the last thirty years during their many posts and extensive travel throughout the world.
WILLIAM ROSE William Rose, a native Australian, was a member of the Victoria Street Group of Sydney abstract expressionists. Rose was more comfortable with the title ‘constructivist’, however, which better suited the geometric, detailed and tightly controlled formal approach which typified his work. Throughout the early 1960s, Rose’s work was represented in significant national exhibitions, including Antipodean Vision, Tate Gallery, London. William Rose’s work is widely represented across major Australian art galleries including National Gallery Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery, Museums and Art Galleries of the Northern Territory, Queen Victoria Art Gallery and Museum and Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

STANISLAV RAPOTEC
SIR SIDNEY NOLAN
Stanislav Rapotec is highly regarded among collectors and institutions alike in his adopted home of Australia. Brought up in the newly formed Yugoslavia, Rapotec led a politically active life; establishing links between the Resistance and the Royal Yugoslav government-in-exile in Jerusalem and Cairo upon the collapse of the Yugoslavian army. He discovered a love of Australia after a visit in 1955 and would later settle there and begin to paint. When asked about his work as an artist he once commented: "In order to create you must have had experience. You must have quite a few dramas; you must have suffered; when you have balanced on the razor's edge between life and death, only then are you capable of true creation. To become an artist you must have a life rich in experience, a strong desire to express yourself, a will strong enough to carry out this desire and on top of all that - talent." His work is featured in many important Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery of South Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia and Queensland Art Gallery.
Sidney Nolan is one of the best known and most significant artists Australia has produced. The Ned Kelly series of paintings and prints are among his most famous and distinctive works. As well as telling the story of Australia’s notorious outlaw, Nolan explores the universal themes of injustice, love and betrayal. His unique depiction of the Australian landscape is iconic. The Kelly saga of prints is held in several national and international collections including the Tate Gallery, London..

L&T’s Questions & Answers with Kate MacKenzie, founder of ‘The Original Chair Company’ The world of recycling and upcycling is ever increasing in a time when fashions look to the more organic and people have less money for expensive and brand new pieces for the home, so this month we spent some time talking with furniture maker and upholsterer, Kate MacKenzie, founder of ‘The Original Chair Company’ for a litte inspiration. Based in Perth in Scotland Kate works with mainly residential clients, around the UK providing custom made and antique chairs and sofas. As a business owner Kate is passionate about her work and enjoys working closely with clients offering a high level of personal service. What can you tell us about your business and how it works? My business started as a natural progression following my own love for antique chairs. I buy antique chairs and sofas and then have them fully restored and refurbished to bring them back to their former primed state. Thankfully there are many people out there who have the same love of antique chairs as I do and they know that if they come to The Original Chair Company they are assured of buying a genuine piece of history. Part of your business is about refurbishing and reupholstering antique pieces of furniture, what would you say were the benefits of doing this? We sell many Victorian, Edwardian and older period pieces and the wonderful expectation is that these pieces are traditionally made using skills honed by exceptionally well trained craftsmen. Once restored our customers are buying a chair/sofa that is equal or better than a high-end new build piece but with the added bonus that they have a unique item, and they have saved an antique from heading to landfill. Is buying at auction a way in which you source stock, and can clients bring their own pieces to you for a face-lift? We do source much of our stock from auction. This is often particularly helpful if we have a client who is looking for a specific period chair/sofa. We have developed a relationship with many auction houses over the years and 40

can usually track down an item which helps our clients find the perfect chair. We also source from other avenues and often our clients donate chairs that they are finished with. They no longer have need of the chair but nor do they want to throw it in the tip. We are always happy to rehome unwanted antiques... Clients do also bring in their own pieces for us to restore for them. We have a vast and varied fabric range to choose from and one of the most enjoyable parts of our job is helping clients pull their colours, patterns and textured fabrics together with trimmings etc. to transform their furniture. For those that haven’t explored this process before, is this a timely and costly method of furnishing your home? There are certainly many pieces of furniture to be bought for less money, but for anyone who wants a special piece of upholstered furniture with history, who recognises the benefits of upcycling and appreciates the value in period pieces, then this is a great way to obtain a unique item to add to their home. Time-wise, the process of buying an antique chair, choosing fabric and having the upholstery work done can take as little as 2-4 weeks or it may take a lot longer. Bear in mind when ordering new furniture these days lead times can be as much as 16 weeks! The most common reason for time delays when we reupholster is the wide fabric choice but we, at The Original Chair Company, love fabrics, we know the fabric

books well and are always happy to spend time helping our clients with their choices. Often customers know exactly what they want; it may be to match in with an existing colour scheme in their home. Other times the customers have no idea what they want and are delighted to take advice (and lots of fabric inspiring samples) home with them to mull over.
numerous trimmings the results were truly stunning / sumptuous!
The end result is always the same: exceeded expectations and a delighted client.
A home is an incredibly personal space and whilst I, and everyone else, loves to look at glossy magazines, make-over shows and film sets for ideas and inspiration, ultimately the choice of decor should be a very individual one.
You also design and make your own pieces, what inspires your work? I have seen so many wonderful, charming, beautiful and elegant pieces of antique furniture over the years. They are the reason that I love my job and they are also the inspiration behind my designs. It can often be the scale of a deep seated Victorian Armchair, the placement of buttons on the arm of Georgian bedroom chair or the curve along the back of a small Edwardian sofa that sets a piece apart and above the rest, and it is the detail combined with comfort that makes a successful design. Tell us about a favourite project that you have worked on in the past. We recently worked with a well-known London based international interiors company to put together a ‘Victoriania’ inspired brand of furniture. We collected many curvaceous, ornate, and heavily buttoned chairs, sofas and chaiselongues and then set to rebuild them; when they were then upholstered in floral fabrics with
What are your top tips for the home? There is a saying about only having things that are practical or things that you love in your home (this may work if we can add ‘on show’ in your home).
Saying that, I think the largest most expensive items in the home are generally not disposable and from an anti-landfill side point of view, these items could be in the family for generations. I also like at least one item in the room to have some ‘real presence’ about it e.g. a chair! A neutral colour scheme lends itself to being the most flexible over time. With a variety of textures used in soft furnishings, wall coverings and flooring, this alone can become an interesting place to be. If, like me, an entirely neutral room is just too calm and lacking expression then it is so simple to add pattern and colour and your own personality into a room with smaller items. For example, rugs, cushions, throws, lamps, pictures and smaller items of furniture such as footstools and occasional chairs. All these items are relatively inexpensive and simple to change. DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION (1) While we seek to describe lots accurately, it may be impractical for us to carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or
estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. We undertake that any such opinion shall be honestly and reasonably held and accept liability for opinions given negligently or fraudulently. Subject to the foregoing neither we the auctioneer or our employees or agents or the seller accept liability for the correctness of such opinions and all conditions and warranties, whether relating to description, condition or quality of lots, express, implied or statutory, are hereby excluded. This Condition is subject to the next following Condition concerning deliberate forgeries and applies save as provided for in paragraph 6 “information to buyers”. (2) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction for purposes of consumer legislation. 16. FORGERIES Notwithstanding the preceding Condition, any Lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery (as defined) may be returned to us by you within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought, and is accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the lot including any buyer’s premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition. The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale. GENERAL 17. (2). Such rights and exclusions shall extend to and be deemed to be for the benefit of employees and agents of the seller and/or the auctioneer who may themselves enforce them. 19. Any notice to any buyer, seller, bidder or viewer may be given by first class mail in which case it shall be deemed to have been received by the addressee 48 hours after posting. 20. Special terms may be used in catalogue descriptions of particular classes of items (Books, Jewellery, paintings, guns, firearms etc) in which case the descriptions must be interpreted in accordance with any glossary or guidance notes appearing in the catalogue. These notices and terms will also form part of our terms and conditions of sales. 21. Any indulgence extended to bidders buyers or sellers by us notwithstanding the strict terms of these Conditions or of the Terms of Consignment shall affect the position at the relevant time only and in respect of that particular concession only; in all other respects these Conditions shall be construed as having full force and effect. 22. Scottish law applies to the interpretation of these Conditions.
