The Rochdale Family of Lingholm, Cumbria

The West Front, Lingholm.

Occupying a position high on the banks of Derwentwater in Cumbria, Lingholm was designed in the 1870s by Sir Alfred Waterhouse (1830-1905), one of the most acclaimed architects of the 19th century. The property was originally built for Colonel J. F. Greenall of the Greenall brewing family, however during the 1890s it was unoccupied or let furnished in the summer months, and in the early 1900s it was purchased by Colonel George Kemp. Kemp was born in Rochdale, Lancashire in 1866 and was educated at Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford. He transferred to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1884, where he graduated in the ‘Classical Tripos’ in 1888. As a businessman, Kemp entered the textile industry, eventually becoming Chairman of Kelsall & Kemp, flannel manufacturers in Rochdale. From 1885 to 1892 he played first-class cricket with Lancashire, scoring three centuries in his career, and also representing Cambridge University. He was elected Member of Parliament for Heywood as a Liberal Unionist in 1895 and, in 1900, he served in the Boer War, during which service he was mentioned in despatches. He commanded the 32nd Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry to the end of the war in 1902, and in 1909 he was knighted for his war services.

6

At the January 1910 General Election he was elected MP for Manchester North West, this time as a Liberal, but stepped down from the House of Commons in 1912, declaring that he “loathed politics”. A year later, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Rochdale of Rochdale. Called to war again a few years later, Lord Rochdale was Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 1st/6th Battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers, and was temporarily Brigadier of the 127th (Manchester) Brigade of the 42nd (East Lancashire) Division during the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915. Rochdale married Lady Beatrice Mary Egerton, third daughter of Francis Egerton, 3rd Earl of Ellesmere on 5 August 1896. Ellesmere had inherited the estates and famous collections at Worsley Hall in Lancaster and Bridgewater House in London, and these wonderful collections may have encouraged Rochdale to begin his own collections, which he did in earnest, in the tradition of other wealthy industrialists of his time, such as Sir William Burrell. As so often happens, his collecting was carried out in partnership with a scholarly dealer. Rochdale’s dealer and mentor was the famous authority on furniture and works of art, Percy Macquoid. Macquoid (1852–1925) was a theatrical designer, collector and connoisseur of English

furniture, and the author of articles, largely for Country Life. He produced four books on the history of English furniture, the first major survey of the subject, which have been reprinted and are still of use today: The Age of Oak, The Age of Walnut, The Age of Mahogany and The Age of Satinwood. He collaborated with Ralph Edwards on The Dictionary of English Furniture (three volumes, 1924–1927), and several pieces in the present collection are illustrated in this celebrated reference work. Lord Rochdale was eventually to own four houses. Apart from Lingholm, his other homes were Beechwood in Rochdale, Old Hall in Highgate, (Lord Arundel’s old house) and Gunnerside in Swaledale. Slowly these houses began to fill with early furniture and works of art, purchased from mainly London galleries and authorities of the day, including Harold Ainsworth Peto, Sir George Donaldson, Morant & Co, Mallett & Son and, of course, Macquoid himself. All these purchases were recorded in a marvellous inventory in the possession of the current Viscount, recording dates of purchase and from whom. The inventory records furniture and works of art from the 16th and 17th centuries; oak and walnut furniture from England, France and Italy; Flemish and Italian tapestries and textiles; the celebrated collection of maiolica, some sold in London in

the 1970’s, and at Lyon & Turnbull more recently, and the remainder in the present collection. There is also rare 17th century English silver and silver-gilt and a magnificent collection of engraved glassware. Where it has been possible to identify a piece in this inventory, the information is annotated next the appropriate lot. When Lingholm was purchased, panelling was introduced into the main rooms. The dining room was fitted with a particularly spectacular carved oak fire surround, salvaged from James I’s Hunting Lodge near Southampton. In the hall, Spanish gilt-leather walls created a sumptuous and rich effect, a fitting backdrop to the Renaissance period furniture and works of art. To the side of the building, the great Stone Hall was created to show off the tapestries, again bought under the guidance of Percy Macquoid and included in the sale. The panelled walls with local slate above the door level are centred on a magnificent Italian Renaissance fireplace, purchased in Florence from Giuseppe Pacini Florence on March 20th 1903. The bay window allowed spectacular views towards the lake, taking in part of the famously planted gardens with its collection of rhododendrons. This collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, many planted in the 1920s and 1930’ are one of Lingholm’s chief glories. On acquiring the estate, Lord Rochdale created terraces and commissioned Bertram SymonsJeune to lay out the water gardens. The woods around Lingholm were – and still are – the home of red squirrels and other woodland creatures. These creatures captured the imagination of one of Lingholm’s most famous visitors, the children’s writer and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. The house was the favourite summer retreat for Potter and her family and in 1901, whilst staying there, she sent a story and picture letter about a red squirrel colony in

LY O N & T U R N B U L L

The Lingholm Collection

Cumberland to Norah Moore, the daughter of her former governess, Annie Moore. “There are such numbers of squirrels in the woods here,” she wrote in the letter, “They are all very busy now gathering nuts which they hide away in little holes where they can find them again in winter.” Her correspondence was illustrated with sketches of squirrels, one of which she called ‘Nutkin’. She spent the summer sketching these squirrels, the landscape around the house, and St Herbert’s Island in the centre of the lake, which would eventually become Owl Island in Squirrel Nutkin. Potter sketched and photographed the island from both sides of the lake from the shores at Lingholm. The island and its surroundings can be accurately identified from Potter’s illustrations, one shown here from lot 151. Potter also drew inspiration here for The Tale of Peter Rabbit which uses Lingholm for scenes in the vegetable garden, with its distinctive wicket gate.

A plaque commemorating the use of the house as a hospital during World War I.

‘The squirrels set sail on their rafts for Owl Island.’

To the end of his life, Lord Rochdale kept collecting: a familiar figure between the wars in the sale rooms. The collection grew steadily, however eventually it all came to Lingholm after Beechwood was demolished; Gunnerside sold, and Highgate Old Hall was destroyed after the war. The house was used as a hospital for injured service personnel during World War One; however it continued to remain in the family. Lord Rochdale died in 1945 and was succeeded by his eldest son, John, who became the first Viscount Rochdale in 1960. He was succeeded by the current Viscount, St John Durival Kemp. Lord Rochdale and his wife, Lady Rochdale, hope that the excitement and pleasure that were engendered in collecting and acquiring these pieces will, in turn, be enjoyed by new collectors at this sale.

However the consensus is now that these objects were only used as torches (mash’al in Persian). This kind of cylindrical pillar shape clearly appeared in the second quarter of the sixteenth century and may come from northwestern India. The shaft of pillar-candlesticks may have changed from the smooth to the faceted type around the mid sixteenth century, probably in western Iran.

30 FB70/1 16TH CENTURY, AFTER DIERIC BOUTS CHRIST IN THE HOUSE OF SIMON oil on cradled panel, framed 64cm x 47cm Exhibited: Manchester City Art Gallery, 'Exhibition of Works of Art from Private Collections in the North West and North Wales', 21st September to 30th October, 1960; Cat. 27 Note: This painting, dating from the early 16th century, is a re-imagining of the Flemish artist Dieric Bouts' c.1460 painting of the same subject. The scene depicted illustrates Luke 7:36-50 in which Christ is dining in the house of Simon the Pharisee. A woman from the

village, traditionally identified as the Magdalen, enters. "As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them." Simon reacts in protest, explaining to Jesus that she is a sinner. Jesus explains that her actions prove her love and penitence and forgives her sins before the assembled guests. Though faithfully emulating many aspects of Bouts' painting, this scene has several notable differences. The figure on the far right in this version is a wine bearer, whose animated pose enhances a sense of the dramatic within the scene. In Bouts' original however, the figure on the far right is a stern-looking Dominican monk, kneeled in prayer.

Entries in the family archives suggest that maiolica was acquired between 1894 and 1916 from three different sources: from G. Donaldson in 1894 (with two items bought from the Spitzer Collection) in 1896 and in 1897; from H.A. Peto in 1899 and from S.M. Crossley in 1908 and in November 1916.

33 FG131/3 ITALIAN MAIOLICA APOTHECARY PILL POT AND MATCHING COVER URBINO DISTRICT, CIRCA 1574 the squat bulbous body with a domed cover with flattened knop, painted in blue, yellow, brown, black and white in the centre within a panel the emblem of an enthroned queen with crown and sceptre below a curtain and above a label with the inscription ‘’.P.ANTICO.’ on a ground of trophies of arms and musical instruments on a blue ground; one of the armorial helmets with the mark of an unknown monastic pharmacy consisting of a patriarchal cross flanked by the letters D O. 13cm diameter, 9.2cm high (without cover); 13.5cm high with cover Literature: For an identical pill pot and cover with the same finial probably made for the same series and attributed to Castel Durante see cat 1010 , plate 163, B. Rackham, Victoria and Albert Museum, Catalogue of Italian Maiolica, 1940. Several other jars from this series are known including one dated 1574 and another dated 1575. ( Elisa P. Several other jars from this series are known including one dated 1574 and another dated 1575. ( Elisa P. Sani, Italian Renaissance Maiolica, V&A Publishing, 2012, cat.195, p.165.)

40 ITALIAN MAIOLICA “TURKISH HORSEMAN” LUSTRE DISH DERUTA, CIRCA 1520 having a sloping rim and a flanged edge, the foot rim pierced with two holes for suspension, the front tin-glazed and painted in dark blue, and yellow lustre, in the centre a mounted bearded turbaned horseman, galloping to the left, barefoot, wearing a long flowing outer garment with an extended collar and carrying a standard with ribbons fluttering behind, the border in sections of scale pattern, palmettes and radial stems with buds 42cm diam, 8.4cm high Note: Wilson & Sani, Poole and Watson and others have noted that Deruta lustred dishes decorated with Turkish horsemen are less common than polychrome versions. (T. Wilson and E.P.Sani, Le maioliche rinascimentali nelle collezioni della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia, cat.17, p.56, vol 1,Perugia, 2006; J. Poole, Italian Maiolica and incised slipware in the Fitzwilliam Museum, cat. 273, p.200 and colour plate 19, Cambridge,1995; W. Watson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics. The Howard I. and Janet H. Stein Collection and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, cat.69, p.204, Philadelphia, 2000). The border is found on Deruta lustred maiolica from 1510, see D. Thornton and T. Wilson, Italian Renaissance Ceramics: A catalogue of the British Museum collection, cat. 280, note 15, p.472, London , 2009. A polychrome version of this Turkish horseman is attributed to the Mancini worshop 1535-55 and is in the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge (See Poole above). However, stylistic differences indicate that the decorator of this lustred dish may have been simply copying from the same printed source and at a little earlier date.

49 DUTCH PASTORAL GARDEN TAPESTRY PROBABLY DELFT, LATE 16TH CENTURY, AFTER KARL VAN DER MANDEL, PROBABLY WORKSHOP OF FRANCOIS SPIERING woven in wools and silk depicting a walled garden with parterres, arbours, temples, trellises and canopies against a mountainous landscape with hilltop towns in the distance, the border lacking 252cm long, 205cm high Literature: Campbell, Thomas P., ed., 'Tapestry in the Baroque: Threads of Splendor', The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2007 pp. 44-48. Note: Often viewed as an extension of the medieval millefleurs tradition, this type of garden tapestry, were being widely produced in the latter part of the 16th century. The present example with its unusual oblique perspective, shows stylistic similarities to a set of five at Warwick Castle, 'Garden Scenes with Mythological Fountains', woven by Francois Speiring in Delft in 1604, with designs attributed to Karel van Manden the Elder.

89 FLEMISH HISTORICAL TAPESTRY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND THE CAPTURE OF TYRE POSSIBLY TOURNAI, LATE 16TH CENTURY woven in wool and silk, Alexander stands in the left foreground accompanied by officers and the captured King of Tyre in a cart behind, before him are laid the shields and arms of the defeated Tyreans, in the distance a fleet of galleys rest in the bay; within a four side wide foliate border with putti and allegorical figures 519cm long, 315cm high Note: The Siege of Tyre in 332 BC was orchestrated by Alexander the Great during his campaign against the Persians. After the city of Tyre refused to surrender to the Macedonians, Alexander was forced to build a causeway to allow access to what was both a strategic coastal base and an island surrounded by impenetrable walls. It was said that Alexander was so enraged by both the Tyrians’ defence and the great loss of his men that he destroyed half the city and killed around 6,000-8,000 civilians, before taking a further 30,000 residents to be sold into slavery. Literature: Brosens, Koenraad; Mayer Thurman, Christa C. (general editor) 'European Tapestries in the Art Institute of Chicago', Yale University Press 2008, p. 229, fig. 4 for a similar example.

By the end of the 19th century he was actively designing for theatrical productions, and was a favoured designor of the noted actor and producer Herbert Beerbohm Tree. He was also a keen collector and scholar of antique furniture, contributing articles to 'Country Life', writing and compiling four highly influential books on the subject beginning in 1904 with 'The Age of Oak', then continuing with 'The Age of Walnut', the Age of Mahogany', and 'The Age of Satinwood'. He later collaborated with Ralph Edwards on 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', still regarded as the most comprehensive study of the British furniture and considered a standard reference for this subject. Macquoid was probably introduced to the 1st Lord Rochdale through the Colonel's cousin Harold Peto, whose name appears regularly in the household inventory as a supplier of furniture and furnishings to Lingholm. Macquoid served as an advisor to Lord Rochdale, making recommendations and suggestions for possible acquisitions. It was under his mentorship that the Stone Room at Lingholm was built to accommodate the series of tapestries.

Médaille d’honneur pour acte de courage et de dévouement (silver), together with the Grande Médaille de Vermeill from the French Geographical Society to Miss Kemp in 1922 for Chinese Mettle, with dress miniatures Note: Emily Georgiana Kemp was born in 1860 into a wealthy Baptist family who made their money during the industrial revolution, she was one of the first students at the Somerville College, one of the first women’s colleges in Oxford, later continuing her studies at the Slade School of Fine Art. Following her studies Kemp travelled through China, Korea, India, central Asia and the Amazon, she sketched, painted and wrote perceptive journals throughout her travels, turning her focus to the education and welfare of women in these countries, particularly their role in religion. In 1909 Kemp travelled to China and wrote what would be the first of six books, The Face of China. It would appear that she served as a nurse during the war, spending most of her time in France. However, at the end of the war she decided to continue her travels, and subsequently received the award from the French Geographical Society for writing Chinese Mettle, a travelogue of her time spent in China in 1921. A British woman abroad in Asia was unusual at the time, but during her six month journey through thirteen of China’s provinces, she recorded the meeting of the ancient and the modern in a nation scrambling to

catch up with the outside world. Her writing details a wide range of subjects from the legacy of the opium trade and the impact of Western religious missionaries on China’s mythic culture, to the astonishing efficiency of the new postal system and the ominous rumblings of nearby Japan’s threatening militarism. Her books serve as an invaluable glimpse at one of the world’s most populous and powerful nations at a precarious period in its history, the period between the Imperial and Communist eras. Kemp counted many prominent figures amongst her friends, including the theologian Marcus Dods, the explorer Francis Younghusband and Albert Schweitzer; all no doubt drawn to her adventurous nature. She donated the chapel at Somerville College as a ‘house for prayer for all people’ regardless of their religion, and also donated many of the silks she obtained on her travel to the college’s cause. Upon her death in 1939 she donated her diverse collection of art to the Ashmolean museum.
