Buying at Auction This sale is subject to our standard Terms and Conditions of Sale. If you have not bought at auction before we will be delighted to advise you. Estimates Estimates are printed below each lot and do not include the buyer’s premium. The sale will be conducted in pounds sterling. Dimensions Dimensions are for guidance only; it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that they are correct. Buyer’s Premium The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon. 25% up to £25,000 / 20% thereafter. VAT will be charged on the premium at the rate imposed by law. (see our Terms and Conditions of Sale). VAT The symbol † by a lot number indicates that VAT is payable by the purchaser at the standard rate on the hammer price. The symbol * by a lot number indicates that the lot has been temporarily imported from outside the EU and that VAT is payable by the purchaser at the rate of 5% on the hammer price. No VAT is payable on the hammer price or premium for books bought at auction. Droit de Suite This symbol § indicates works which may be subject to the Droit de Suite or Artist’s Resale Right, which took effect in the United Kingdom on 14th February 2006. We are required to collect a royalty payment for all qualifying works of art. Under new legislation which came into effect on 1st January 2012, this applies to living artists and artists who have died in the last 70 years. This royalty will be charged to the buyer on the hammer price and in addition to the buyer’s premium. It will not apply to works where the

hammer price is less than €1,000 (euros). The charge for works of art sold at and above €1,000 (euros) and below €50,000 (euros) is 4%. For items selling above €50,000 (euros), charges are calculated on a sliding scale. All royalty charges are paid to the appropriate collecting organisation and no handling costs or additional fees are retained by the auctioneer. Resale royalties are not subject to VAT. Please note that the royalty payment is calculated on the rate of exchange at the European Central Bank on the date of the sale. 139 FF907/3 GEORGE WASHINGTON JACK (1855-1932) FOR MORRIS & CO. MAHOGANY INLAID BOOKCASE CABINET, CIRCA 1890 of inverted breakfront with panelled superstructure supporting an open shelf above a foliate marquetry frieze and four astragal glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the base with central fall enclosing a fitted interior flanked by pedestal supports each with two doors and a cupboard below, the whole raised on shaped and stepped bracket feet 198cm wide, 234cm high, 40cm deep Note: George Jack was born on Long Island, New York, of Scottish parents. Upon his father’s death in 1860, he was brought back to Glasgow. Here, he was apprenticed to Horatio Bromhead before moving to London, where he eventually joined the office of Philip Webb in 1880. Like many of his contemporaries, he also designed furniture and furnishings and made a range of plaster reliefs and wood-carvings. The connection which Webb had with his friend William Morris led to Jack receiving commissions to design for Morris & Company, alongside his architectural work. In1890 he succeeded Philip Webb as chief furniture designer for the firm. His designs encouraged the revival of marquetry techniques to embellish furniture, as this piece illustrates.

Note: Decorative leather panels as fashionable wall coverings were popular in the16th and 17th centuries, and the fashion was revived in the 1890s. Ashbee designed several panels as wall coverings, and smaller objects, and Bill Hardiman, a member of the Guild of Handicraft, made the panels. The subject and style of the present lot, the peacock being a favourite motif, suggests an attribution to Ashbee.

Abingwood chairs by George Walton This remarkable group of twelve oak Abingwood chairs were supplied by George Walton for the Billiard Room of Miss Cranston’s tea room on Buchanan Street, Glasgow in 1896. They were made at a time when Glasgow was experiencing the intense period of creativity around the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, the result of which we know as the ‘Glasgow Style’. Walton, by now running a successful decorating business Walton & Co., had originally designed and supplied chairs of this design to Rowntree’s Cafe in Scarborough in 1895. He was entering what was to become one of his most creative periods, experimenting with different techniques in wall coverings, metal fittings as well as stained glass and creating new furniture designs. The chair designs for the cafe were based on the French caquetoire style, popular in Scotland in the 17th century. With the Abingwood chair he took this design a step further flattening the curved arms, and including a tapered back that continues below the seat to the stretcher below, to create a chair that would become one of his most distinctive. Walton’s reputation from his work in Scarborough would reach greater heights at Buchanan Street, where Miss Cranston, with a successful reputation for service and quality, was opening her new tea rooms. He was already at work creating the interiors in November 1896 where a number of the rooms were under his complete control, whilst in others he shared the decoration with his contemporary, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. For both designers this was also a first commission from Miss Cranston, who was to become Mackintosh’s greatest patron. Walton varied the effect in each room he designed by using different techniques. In the Billiard Room, repeat stencilling and mural painting were combined on the walls with dark stained furniture arranged around the sides. A contemporary photograph shows the Abingwood chairs in situ, arranged around the large billiard table in the centre with its magnificent metal light fitting above. By controlling every aspect of the scheme Walton was able to achieve a unity in his design which was much admired, and was a technique which Mackintosh was also to use to great effect in further schemes for Miss Cranston later on. Miss Cranston disposed of the Buchanan Street tearooms in 1919, and it is at this time that the chairs offered here were purchased by T. B. Lawson, the proprietor of Lawson’s, Glasgow’s oldest jewellery business. Mr Lawson’s business premises were at 85 Buchanan Street, and he will doubtless have regularly frequented the tea rooms at Miss Cranston’s next door. This group of chairs were purchased for the family’s country property near Glasgow where they remained until 1973. It is interesting to note that Lawson’s son T. Campbell Lawson purchased Hill House from the Blackie family, and lived there before selling it in 1972 to the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. Collins, Judith ‘Eric Gill: Sculpture’, London 1992, p. 35 illus., p.77 cat no. 13 illus. Note: Gill made three plasticine figure groups of the Madonna & Child for his own pleasure in 1912-13. He subsequently had plaster editions of twelve made of them all as well as a bronze edition of two of them, including the present example, which numbered six. The plaster figures were made by Charles Smith & Son, sculptors’ moulders in Southcote Road, Holloway and were originally sold for £1 each from Everard Meynell’s bookshop near Westminster Cathedral. Gill hoped they would be bought by Catholic worshippers looking for something well conceived and well made which could be enjoyed by a wider audience and sold in an edition. Eventually it was thought that close to 90 were made of the present example. Each figure was decorated differently, and signed ‘E.G.’ with an edition number. Examples can be found in the collections of Manchester City Art Gallery and William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, Los Angeles. Early purchasers for the plaster figures included W.R. Lethaby and William Rothenstein who commented on his purchase ‘The lady looked like the divine mother of all the world when I saw her in red wax, but now that you have coloured her in some mysterious way she has become the virgin Mary unmistakably suckling Christ...you have painted her most beautifully and she reigns over my desk above me, my Chinese ivory mother facing her from the other end of the room’
