Welcome to
Happy new year, and welcome to our first Interiors sale of 2014! To kick the year off, we bring you various unique collections from all over the country, including a variety of historic antiquities from the collection of the late Simon John Noble, Ardkinglas House near Loch Fyne (page 24), and a group of unique column capitals from the National Gallery of Scotland (page 47). To start things off, turn to page 10 for a further collection of caricatures, straight from the studio of the artist John Springs. Following the auctioning of work by Springs in April last year, we have a further group of portraits up for grabs, including Princess Diana, Jamie Oliver and Nelson Mandela. We also thought we’d give you a perspective from behind the scenes at L&T this time around; our resident furniture cataloguer David Fiddes gives you his thoughts on current trends in antique world and the availability of items on sale. Turn to page 52 to see his article: ‘The beauty of antiques: furniture at auction’. We’ve decided to continue with our two day Interiors sale this month too, and we will be auctioning the Paintings side of the sale on Friday 24th January, starting at 11am, followed by Furniture, Rugs and Works of Art on Saturday 25th January, commencing at 10am. We will be offering our free cup of tea and coffee from our in-house café run by Valvona and Crolla for all those who register, so please do join us for a warm beverage on a winter’s day during our open viewing times!

Highlights from the Sale Collection of caricatures: the work of John Springs Our fifth sale includes 11 hand selected caricatures by John Springs. Following on from our sale in April last year, we present a second group of drawings straight from the artist’s London studio. Springs’ career spans over 35 years, where his work has featured in numerous international publications, such as The Spectator and the Rolling Stone Magazine. We are fortunate enough to be offering further pieces for auction this January, including portraits of royalty, politicians and celebrity chefs!
Page 10 Items from the collection of the late Simon John Noble, Ardkinglas, Loch Fyne Simon John Noble was the laird of Ardkinglas house in Argyllshire, and, perhaps most notably, the founder of ‘Loch Fyne Oysters’ and ‘Loch Fyne Restaurants’. When he inherited his father’s estate in 1972 it was running at a loss, and ‘Johnny’ decided to think creatively in order to turn things around. In partnership with a marine biologist, Johnny started to produce and retail the shellfish from the local loch. In time the company has become a worldwide success, exporting its produce internationally and now operating as a chain of restaurants. The collection on sale this January features some of Johnny’s much loved antiquities, including Egyptian, Roman and Greek jewellery, dishes, and figures, all pertaining to a very apt aquatic theme!
Page 24 Capital columns from the National Gallery of Scotland Our sale this month is also host to a collection of 11 column capitals, all of which proudly stood in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh. These decorative and historic pieces were introduced as part of the 1938/39 re-fit, designed by Stanley Cursiter and were used to divide the large gallery spaces still seen in the building on the Mound today. Having been removed in circa 1987/88, the capitals are now up for auction this January, and offer a rare opportunity to own an architectural piece of Scottish history!

Specialist’s Choice This month our Junior Specialist in the Jewellery and Silver Department, Ruth Davis, picks her favourite pieces from our Interiors sale.
Lot 200
Beads from Arkinglas This piece, one of the many interesting things from the collection of the late Simon John Noble, is one of my favourite items in the sale. It is a wonderful piece which highlights the versatility of jewellery as a subject of interest, proving that jewellery isn’t something which is only to be worn but can be a beautiful ornament or decoration in its own right. The fish, though naively done, still have a great aesthetic appeal which has much resonance within the Noble collection, whose owner was the founder of Loch Fyne oysters, just another layer to its already rich story. For a piece with such age it is unbelievable that the item still looks so current and wearable, and I think as an ornament or round someone’s neck, it would be an interesting talking point in anyone’s home. It is remarkable that something which is over 2000 years old can be found at auction at £1,200-£1,800.
As someone who is relatively new to the world of buying furniture, this piece stands out to me as something which is fun, fashionable and most importantly practical! It ticks all the boxes for someone who is looking to fill their home with interesting pieces of vintage and bespoke, which is very much in vogue at the moment. The reference to ‘Gladstone bags’ and ‘evening suits’ on its doors draw to mind a by-gone age which, with the trend for period dramas at the moment, is a very fashionable reminiscence. Though the lettering is a later addition, these pieces were common in tailors’ shops of the period, and it goes to show what can be done to make something which might have other-wise been run-of-the-mill, into a piece which really stands out, and at £400-£600 it is surely good value for money!
Robert Hope sketchbooks These three sketchbooks by the Edinburgh artist Robert Hope really are extraordinary; displaying Hope’s incredible abilities as a draughtsman. Personally, I love the intimate quality of the books, these were studies rather than something which were produced for a commercial or public purpose and yet the character studies and nudes are very enigmatic. It gives an insight into the artist’s process which you don’t get with great sweeping landscapes or large portraits of austere sitters. The women he depicts seem surprisingly un-self conscious, and you really sense the artist himself is completely at ease carrying out these private works. The books themselves have a appealing ‘thumbed-through’ feel about them, and the occasional press clipping or pieces Hope was obviously proud of all add to the charm. At £1000£1500 they are a worthy addition to any enthusiast’s collection.

Items from the collection of the late Simon John Noble, Ardkinglas Simon John Noble, or Johnny to those who knew him, was both the laird of Ardkinglas estate in Argyllshire and a creative entrepreneur, who founded ‘Loch Fyne Oysters’ and ‘Loch Fyne Restaurants’. Having inherited his father’s estate on the shores of Loch Fyne in 1972, Johnny was faced with Inheritance tax to pay and an estate running at a loss. His enthusiasm, however, for marine biologist Andrew Lane’s suggestion of growing local oysters and developing a business was the creative answer to his financial woes. A few hundred seed oysters soon became thousands, and over time millions, to create the international company it is today. This also encouraged Johnny to develop the retail side of his business, which started as a trestle table in a lay-by, before moving to a cowshed, and then becoming the seafood restaurant chain now in operation. As a result of Johnny’s hard work, he put vigour back into his estate, employing more people than it had in his greatgrandfather’s day. Johnny’s love for shellfish was evident in his almost encyclopaedic knowledge of oysters too: he regularly recounted various facts and stories about the creatures of the loch, and it was in this vein that he started to collect all manner of antiquities and artefacts with links to the sea. Buying from shops and dealers such as Faustus Ancient Art in London, Johnny developed a fascinating collection of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiques. These included rock crystal amulets, gold pendants, pottery amphoras, and fossils, all with one common theme: the sea.

Johnny Noble and Andrew Lane at the opening of the Oyster Bar, Loch Fyne, 1988.
It is with great pride, and much Johnny-inspired enthusiasm therefore, that Lyon & Turnbull presents the remaining pieces in this collection. Comprising of 25 fascinating items, all previously housed at Ardkinglas house, a Sir Robert Lorimer triumph, the pieces span many centuries, techniques and materials. It offers a rare chance to own something ancient and beautiful, much cherished and admired by its original collector.

The Capital’s Capitals The history of the National Galleries of Scotland is an interesting tale of creativity, expansion and change, starting life in 1859 when William Henry-Playfair’s building on the Mound was completed and open to the viewing public. Various extensions of the space and refurbishments took place over the following years, including developments in 1906 and a reopening in 1912. In the late 1930s it was decided that the National Galleries of Scotland main exhibition building on the Mound was to undergo a practical, yet elegant redisplay. Headed by the then director, (Sir) Stanley Cursiter, it was proposed to divide the gallery space in order that the Old Masters and the contemporary works of art could all be shown in the same suite, yet in their own sections of the room. The solution was the creation of tall flat arches each supported by pairs of neoclassical columns with decorative composite capitals. Cursiter’s own watercolour and oil portrayals of this re-display revealed the new effective curatorial decisions and explained the changes. Since the 1930s various additions to the space and the creation of external buildings has resulted in the wealth of exhibition spaces we enjoy in Edinburgh today. It is with great pleasure, therefore, that Lyon & Turnbull have become part of the story of the National Galleries, as we auction some of the capitals designed by Cursiter from the Mound building. Having been removed in 1987/88, the National Galleries of Scotland is retaining one capital for record purposes, and has given two others to interested public collections in Scotland. The remainder are now being offered for sale with any proceeds going to benefit the acquisitions funds of the Galleries. So, whether for the home, or acquired for their provenance, now is your chance to own these fascinating pieces of Scottish history and design, unique to the building from whence they came and extremely decorative in their display.

The beauty of antiques: furniture at auction In my job I get to work with all manners of interesting and beautiful items, in particular pieces of antique furniture which have long held place of pride in people’s homes and have often been inherited and cherished by generations of people. Some pieces are centuries old and others have fascinating histories, made in woods once exotic and valuable to their original commissioner, each item represents former trends, culture and design which continue to have influence today. It may seem surprising therefore that many of these items, including Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian pieces of furniture, are extremely good value for money at auction. Indeed, one can acquire a well-made, hand crafted piece of furniture at an affordable price, with a good variety of items being regularly available for sale and purchase. Traditional styles, like all things, come in and out of fashion, but by combining older pieces alongside newer items one can achieve an eclectic mix which will enhance the look and feel of any property.
The pair of Wassily chairs designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925 (lot 331).
Championed by interior designers, furniture dealers, and homes and antiques publications, this is now something which everyone can achieve. So if you have one new year’s resolution this month, make it to look around and see what’s on offer! The reason for buying antique pieces is also multitude, not least because they are attractive and functional, but also because of the stories that these items have to tell. In our sale this January, for example, we have a Victorian walnut collector’s cabinet once owned by James Robertson Justice, the prolific mid-20th century British film star. He was also an avid collector of natural history specimens and is likely that he used this cabinet to store his pieces. On his death the cabinet was passed on to a close friend, and it is now available for sale at Lyon & Turnbull. At the other end of the aesthetic spectrum, we are also offering are a pair of Wassily chairs designed in 1925 by Marcel Breuer. This truly iconic chair has influenced modern furniture design ever since, and shows how ‘antique’ can be both fashionable and stylish.

A beautiful pallasite originating from deep within an asteroid. The original mass of this meteorite was found in the bed of a stream flowing into the River Hekandue, a tributary of the Jasachnaja. Further expeditions to the area yielded more finds; some discoveries being true pallasites with their roughly 50:50 mix of olivine and iron, while others were comprised entirely of iron. The Seymchan slice offered here is the pallasite type, revealing olivine (peridot) crystals surrounded by a web of iron. This exquisite specimen has been cut extremely thinly, maximising the surface area to weight ration. When backlit, this stunning meteorite gives the appearance of an extra-terrestrial stained glass window. Approximate dimensions: 212 x 113mm

DEFINITIONS In these Conditions: (a) “Auctioneer” means the firm of Lyon & Turnbull or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; (b) “deliberate forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source but which is unequivocally described in the catalogue as being the work of a particular creator and which, at the date of the sale, had a value materially less than it would have had if it had been in accordance with the description; (c) “hammer price” means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the auctioneer brings down the hammer; (d) “terms of consignment” means the stipulated terms and rates of commission on which Lyon & Turnbull accepts instructions from sellers or their agents; (e) “total amount due” means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting buyer under these Conditions; (f) “sale proceeds” means the net amount due to the seller, being the hammer price of the lot sold less commission at the stated rate, Value Added Tax chargeable and any other amounts due to us by the seller in whatever capacity and however arising; (g) “You”, “Your”, etc. refer to the buyer as identified in Condition 2. (h) The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate. 2. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) the maker of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the buyer at the hammer price and any dispute about a bid, which must be raised before the next lot is offered, shall be settled at the auctioneer’s absolute discretion. (c) Bidders shall be deemed to act as principals. (d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (e) Our right to bid on behalf of the seller is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve and the right to refuse any bid is also reserved. 3. INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the auctioneer’s sole discretion. 4. THE PURCHASE PRICE
Under new legislation which came into effect on 1st January 2012, this applies to living artists and artists who have died in the last 70 years. This royalty will be charged to the buyer on the hammer price and in addition to the buyers premium. It will not apply to works where the hammer price is less than €1,000 (euros). The charge for works of art sold at and above €1,000 (euros) and below €50,000 (euros) is 4%. For items selling above €50,000 (euros),charges are calculated on a sliding scale. All royalty charges are paid to the Design and Artists Copyright Society (‘DACS’) and no handling costs or additional fees are retained by the auctioneer. Resale royalties are not subject to VAT. Please note that the royalty payment is calculated on the rate of exchange at the European Central Bank on the date of the sale. More information on Droit de Suite is available at www.dacs.org.uk. 7. accurately, it may be impractical for us to carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion.
