the Royal Scottish Academy Maude Gemmell Hutchison Prize and has exhibited regularly throughout his career in Edinburgh and London. Many of his works have been used as illustrations in books including The Scottish Bestiary by George Mackay Brown and La Potinière by David and Hilary Brown. His work has always been distinguished by the vibrant use of colour and skilled
draughtsmanship which undoubtely came from the many years spent learning drawing while a student in Glasgow and Paris. The variety of images, subjects and signs featured in his paintings is the ultimate expression of his extraordinary creative imagination. The inspiration comes from great masters like Velasquez and Paolo Uccello, but also from the familiar landscapes of his
Scottish home or from Dutch still life painting. The result is a varied portfolio that includes still life, landscapes, illustrations and portraits. The two landscapes presented in this sale are an example of Knox’s work in which rather stylised subjects are given a dramatic depth by the skilled use of strong, contrasting colours.

ETHEL WALKER Ethel Walker is one of Scotland's leading female artists and is represented by eminent galleries both north of the border and in London. Having studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1959-64, Walker spent several years as a teacher before commiting herself wholely to her art. She lives in Argyllshire where she finds constant inspiration in the mutable weather conditions which sweep the coast. She is also known for her elegant still lives, her chosen muted palette lending them a timeless classicism.

Well-known Edinburgh artist David Michie has served as a Trustee for the The Scottish International Education Trust from 2004 until 2013 and as an enthusiast for the Trust’s work he has, most generously, offered the proceeds of the sale of this work as a donation to SIET. This donation will spearhead a fundraising initiative which will enable the Trust to expand its support for talented Scottish individuals. The Scottish International Education Trust (SIET) (charity number SC009207) was set up in 1971 on the initiative of Sean Connery who donated

his fee for his role in the Bond film Diamonds Are Forever as core funding for the Trust, along with a significant contribution from fellow Scot, Jackie Stewart. The Trust has two broad aims: to give financial help at a critical stage in their development to Scots men and women who have shown ability and promise, and who wish to take their studies or professional training further in circumstances where public funds are not available; and to support projects which the Trust considers will contribute to the cultural, social or economic well being
of Scotland, or the improvement of the Scottish environment. The Trust normally makes grants to individual students who apply directly to the Trust, with a wide range of aspirations and in a variety of circumstances. The grants are generally for postgraduate level study and may support, for example, study at a dance academy in New York, advanced study in the clarinet at a conservatoire in Paris, film studies, opera singing, historical research, law, engineering, and more. The common factor is that they are excelling in their field
and have opportunities available to them, where a grant from SIET would contribute significantly to their ability to pursue these. The Trustees are Scots who have distinguished themselves in careers covering a wide range of activities including industry, education, sport, and the arts. PHILIP REEVES
This small exhibition of works for sale is above all celebratory. The devotees of Philip Reeves’ work have long recognised his consistently fresh, developing work and worth. Collectors have become addicted – and they never tire of his prints, paintings, collages and reliefs once given a place on their walls. These works need to be lived with; they divulge their surprises and subtleties with slow-release, persistent magic. This display of Reeves’ works for sale here at Lyon & Turnbull is also designed to generate some financial support for a proposed new book about Philip Reeves. It is puzzling that no book about him has yet been commissioned given his standing within the Scottish art world and enduring popularity among collectors. Reeves has long been championed by galleries such as the Fine Art Society, Cyril

Gerber Fine Art, the Open Eye Gallery, The Mercury Gallery and the Hughson Gallery. They and institutional public galleries including the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow and the Talbot Rice in Edinburgh have striven to make known how special and profound his expressive, sophisticated take on abstraction is. Several critics have pointed out that if this highly original artist had been working in Europe, and exhibited there as much as he has consistently been in Scotland, he would be a household name and/or a national hero by now. Nonetheless, Reeves remains one of Scotland’s most influential practising artists. His significant contribution as founder member of the Edinburgh Printmakers and Glasgow Print Studios in the 1970s continues to stimulate internationally acclaimed art activity in this country today and his work holds a place in

(SCOTTISH b. 1931) NORTHEAST TIDE Signed, ink, gouache, collage 41cm x 56cm (16in x 22in) Note: When Reeves first came to Glasgow (in 1954), people told him how wonderful the north west of Scotland was for painting. So he deliberately headed up the east coast. Its landscape appealed greatly and resulted in many prints and paintings. He found the redness of the earth, rocks and cliffs fascinatingly different from the chalk-white strata he knew in southern England where he was born and brought up.

53 FG977/5 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) BEACH Signed, etching, edition 9/14 59cm x 85cm (23in x 33.5in) Note: The foreground features steps leading down to the beach where three ladies are sunbathing. The inspiration for this strangely surreal print came from a beach in Northumbria.

54 FG977/3 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) WINTER PLOT Signed, ink, gouache, collage 70cm x 147cm (27.5in x 58in) Note: In several works, Reeves has given black, white and grey a seasonal reference. The Cyril Gerber Gallery, Glasgow, has invited favourite artists to contribute works to occasional exhibitions designed to celebrate allotment plots. Reeves has here divided the surface of his collage into a strongly abstract, rectangular ground plan. Plots in winter are generally rather monochrome before the ice melts and fresh seeds are sown.

55 FG977/13 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) MALL Signed, ink, gouache, collage 76.5cm x 55cm (30in x 21.5in) Note: The appearance of shopping malls is forever changing as shops replace shops or windows are redesigned. In this work the viewer might be looking past a foreground of vertical collaged elements like colourful hoardings, banners or columns, to rough, unfinished architectural spaces. These hoardings identify and yet at the same time hide the emerging structures beyond them.

56 FG977/10 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) REGENCY RESTORATION Signed, ink, gouache, collage 100cm x 75.5cm (39.5in x 30in) Note: Architecture in its many forms is a source of perennial interest to Reeves. As a child and young man in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, he was well aware of regency buildings. Here a section of wall which is under repair is exposed and isolated. The image’s climbing composition carries musical undertones. Music for Reeves, as it moves him, does not only convey sound, but also allows for potently abstract images to emerge.

57 FG977/11 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) COAST LINE Signed, ink, gouache, collage 51cm x 81cm (20in x 32in) Note: The white horizontal band across the centre of this painting suggests the tide. A man-made structure on the right, a rigid rectangular shape, might be a vertical bulwark against the force of the sea. The strength of this work lies above all in its powerful abstract structure.

58 FG977/6 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) MODERN INTERIOR Signed, ink, gouache, collage 58cm x 103cm (23in x 40.5in) Note: Balance – and imbalance – of shape and colour make for an image that is both structurally fixed and dynamically free. As he does in this work, Reeves habitually breaks out of the confines of the conventionally rectangular format of paintings. He is also fascinated by “modernity”, in this case making a visual virtue out of a severely designed modern sofa that may or may not be comfortable to sit on, but is meant to look good regardless.

The two boys were not exactly mirror images of each other and furthermore, they led very different lives, with different interests. This so-called “mirror” – a simple but strong abstract image – if divided vertically, would present a balanced but not a precisely identical likeness.

60 FG977/4 PHILIP REEVES R.S.A., P.P.R.S.W., A.R.C.A. (SCOTTISH b. 1931) SHORE OBJECTS Signed, etching edition 7/10 57cm x 60cm (22.5in x 23.5in) Note: Always attracted by unusual shapes or forms, Reeves convincingly integrates the man-made with the natural in this print. A seemingly random scattering of washed up “Shore Objects” has apparently settled on the pebbles – until the next tide sweeps in. In both his prints and his paintings Reeves is a persistently inventive user of “found objects.” He is in his element when contriving collages incorporating such abandoned fragments.

(SCOTTISH b. 1931) ENTRANCE Signed, ink, gouache, collage 102cm x 130cm (40in x 51in) Note: This work was prompted by the entrance to a museum in Istanbul, where a classical sculpture of a female nude seemed to Philip to be in unusual contrast to the more expected clothing of women that is the cultural norm in Turkey. His nude, not much more than a halfhidden contour, might also be read as a vase or amphora.

Working in woodcut allowed Frost to accomplish the quality and clarity of design he envisioned, in contrast to his painting, where the edges of the stripes were inevitably softer. In this technique Frost used three separate woodcuts to make up the pieces.

One of Scotland’s most distinguished contemporary artists, Alison Watt was born in Greenock and attended Glasgow School of Art from 1983 to 1988 where she developed her long life interest in the figurative subject. While still a student, she came to public attention in 1987 when she won the prestigious National Portrait Gallery’s annual award and as a result was commissioned the portrait of the Queen Mother. During the 1990s Watt became famous for her
dryly painted human figures and self-portraits which she often depicted in bright decorative interiors. In 1997 her career reached a turning point with the exhibition Fold (Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh) a series of works in which fabric folds are painted alongside the human figures in a manner that is much inspired by the 19th century painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Fascinated by the sensuous nature of Ingres’s sumptuous materials, Watt started
looking at fabric as a more powerful way to represent the human figure. By the time of her next major exhibition, Shift, in 2000 at the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art the figurative subject was entirely substituted by meticulously painted folds which came to define Watt’s distinctive style. Lingering towards abstraction, these canvases yet carry a physical presence that is stronger than ever. The elegantly draped white fabrics create a movement of shadows and
dark spots that reminds of a sculpture. The heavy folds, at the same time sensuous and mysterious, hiding and showing, empty and full, very powerfully suggest the presence of a figure or rather its absence. In the past 20 years Alison Watt has continued to study the infinite expressions of fabric folds. Her work has been widely exhibited in Great Britain and abroad. The work presented in this sale is an expression of her very particular style.

STEPHEN CONROY Stephen Conroy is one of the most significant artists to have emerged from the Glasgow School of Art in the last thirty years. Within two years of completing his under and post graduate degrees in the late 1980s he began to garner international acclaim and his work now features in numerous private collections, as well as significant public institutions including The Contemporary Art Society, London; Frissiras Museum,
Athens; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; National Portrait Gallery, London; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. Conroy’s work sits in the British figurative tradition, inheriting the mantle from twentieth century artists such as Francis Bacon, one of his greatest and most obvious influences. Unlike Bacon
Conroy does not distort his imagery, though they share the tendency to isolate the (usually male) subject outwith a naturalistic backdrop; the effect being to focus all of the intensity of our attention on the depiction of character and form. This is enhanced by the realism and assertive boldness of Conroy’s draughtsmanship. In this sale we are pleased to present two excellent examples of his technique.

STANDARD TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SALE Lyon & Turnbull carries on business with bidders, buyers and all those present in the auction room prior to, or in connection, with a sale on the following General Conditions and on such other terms, conditions and notices as may be referred to herein. 1. DEFINITIONS In these Conditions: (a) “Auctioneer” means the firm of Lyon & Turnbull or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; (b) “deliberate forgery” means an imitation made with the intention of deceiving as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source but which is unequivocally described in the catalogue as being the work of a particular creator and which, at the date of the sale, had a value materially less than it would have had if it had been in accordance with the description; (c) “hammer price” means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the auctioneer brings down the hammer; (d) “terms of consignment” means the stipulated terms and rates of commission on which Lyon & Turnbull accepts instructions from sellers or their agents; (e) “total amount due” means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting buyer under these Conditions; (f) “sale proceeds” means the net amount due to the seller, being the hammer price of the lot sold less commission at the stated rate, Value Added Tax chargeable and any other amounts due to us by the seller in whatever capacity and however arising; (g) “You”, “Your”, etc. refer to the buyer as identified in Condition 2. (h) The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate. 2. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) the maker of the highest bid accepted by the auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the buyer at the hammer price and any dispute about a bid, which must be raised before the next lot is offered, shall be settled at the auctioneer’s absolute discretion. (c) Bidders shall be deemed to act as principals. (d) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (e) Our right to bid on behalf of the seller is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve and the right to refuse any bid is also reserved. 3. INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the auctioneer’s sole discretion. 4. THE PURCHASE PRICE The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon. 25% up to £25,000 / 20% thereafter. VAT will be charged on the premium at the rate imposed by law. 5. VALUE ADDED TAX Value Added Tax on the hammer price is imposed by law on all items affixed with an asterisk (*) or dagger (†). Value Added Tax is charged at the appropriate rate prevailing by law at the date of sale and is payable by buyers of relevant lots. 6. DROIT de SUITE This symbol § indicates works which may be subject to the Droit de Suite or Artist's Resale Right, which took effect in the United Kingdom on 14th February 2006.
We are required to collect a royalty payment for all qualifying works of art. Under new legislation which came into effect on 1st January 2012, this applies to living artists and artists who have died in the last 70 years. This royalty will be charged to the buyer on the hammer price and in addition to the buyers premium. It will not apply to works where the hammer price is less than €1,000 (euros). The charge for works of art sold at and above €1,000 (euros) and below €50,000 (euros) is 4%. For items selling above €50,000 (euros),charges are calculated on a sliding scale. All royalty charges are paid to the Design and Artists Copyright Society (‘DACS’) and no handling costs or additional fees are retained by the auctioneer. Resale royalties are not subject to VAT. Please note that the royalty payment is calculated on the rate of exchange at the European Central Bank on the date of the sale. More information on Droit de Suite is available at www.dacs.org.uk. 7. PAYMENT (1) Immediately a lot is sold you will: (a) pay to us the total amount due in cash or in such other way as is agreed by us. We accept cash, bank transfer (details on request), Switch or Debit Cards and Visa or MasterCard (please note there is a surcharge of 2% (VAT included) when using credit cards). We do not accept American Express. (2) any payments by you to us may be applied by us towards any sums owing from you to us on any account whatever without regard to any directions of you or your agent, whether express or implied. 8. TITLE AND COLLECTION OF PURCHASES (1) The ownership of any lots purchased shall not pass to you until you have made payment in full to us of the total amount due. (2) You shall at your own risk and expense take away any lots that you have purchased and paid for not later than four working days following the day of the auction or upon the clearance of any cheque used for payment after which you shall be responsible for any removal, storage and other associated charges. (3) No purchase can be claimed or removed until it has been paid for. (4) It is the buyer’s responsibility to ascertain collection procedures, particularly if the sale is not being held at our main saleroom and the potential storage charges for lots not collected by the appropriate time. 9. REMEDIES FOR NON-PAYMENT OR FAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES (1) If any lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, we, as agent for the seller and on their behalf, shall at our absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights we may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights and remedies: (a) to proceed against you for damages for breach of contract; (b) to rescind the sale of that lot and/or any other lots sold by us to you; (c) to resell the lot (by auction or private treaty) in which case you shall be responsible for any resulting deficiency in the total amount due (after crediting any part payment and adding any resale costs). Any surplus so arising shall belong to the seller; (d) to remove, store and insure the lot at your expense and, in the case of storage, either at our premises or elsewhere; (e) to charge interest at a rate of 1.5% per month above the current base rate on the total amount due, to the extent it remains unpaid for more than four working days after the sale; (f) to retain that or any other lot sold to you until you pay the total amount due; (g) to reject or ignore bids from you or
your agent at future auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted; (h) to apply any proceeds of sale of other lots due or in future becoming due to you towards the settlement of the total amount due and to exercise a lien (that is a right to retain possession of) any of your property in our possession for any purpose until the debt due is satisfied. (2) We shall, as agent for the seller and on their behalf pursue these rights and remedies only as far as is reasonable to make appropriate recovery in respect of breach of these Conditions 10. THIRD PARTY LIABILITY All members of the public on our premises are there at their own risk and must note the lay-out of the accommodation and security arrangements. Accordingly neither the auctioneer nor our employees or agents shall incur liability for death or personal injury (except as required by law by reason of our negligence) or similarly for the safety of the property of persons visiting prior to or at a sale. 11. COMMISSION BIDS While prospective buyers are strongly advised to attend the auction and are always responsible for any decision to bid for a particular lot and shall be assumed to have carefully inspected and satisfied themselves as to its condition we shall if so instructed clearly and in writing execute bids on their behalf. Neither the auctioneer or our employees or agents shall be responsible for any failure to do so. Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to prefer the first bid so made. 12. WARRANTY OF TITLE AND AVAILABILITY The seller warrants to the auctioneer and to you that the seller is the true owner of the property consigned or is properly authorised by the true owner to consign it for sale and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 13. AGENCY The auctioneer normally acts as agent only and disclaims any responsibility for default by sellers or buyers. 14. TERMS OF SALE The seller acknowledges that lots are sold subject to the stipulations of these Conditions in their entirety and on the Terms of Consignment as notified to the consignor at the time of the entry of the lot. 15. STANDARD VENDOR FEES AND CHARGES (Subject to VAT) (1) Commission: 15% of the first £3000 and 10% thereafter is charged on the selling price of each lot (subject to a minimum charge of £30). Loss and damage warranty: 1.5% on value of lots sold. Photography: max £40 mono per lot, max £250 colour. Internet Marketing Service: £10 per lot. (2) If a vendor wishes to withdraw a lot organized for sale, a withdrawal fee will apply; (a) If withdrawn over 28 working days prior to the sale, this will be charged at 10% of the mid estimate along with any ancilliary incurred (such as photography), all subject to VAT at the current rate. (b) If withdrawn within 28 working days of the sale, this will be charged at 20% of the mid estimate along with any ancilliary incurred (such as photography), all subject to VAT at the current rate. (3) Aftersales: We reserve the right to accept an after-auction offer on a lot on behalf of the vendor, at the agreed reserve price or above, for up to 48 hours after the original auction. 16. DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION (1) While we seek to describe lots accurately, it may be impractical for us to
carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. We undertake that any such opinion shall be honestly and reasonably held and accept liability for opinions given negligently or fraudulently. Subject to the foregoing neither we the auctioneer or our employees or agents or the seller accept liability for the correctness of such opinions and all conditions and warranties, whether relating to description, condition or quality of lots, express, implied or statutory, are hereby excluded. This Condition is subject to the next following Condition concerning deliberate forgeries and applies save as provided for in paragraph 6 “information to buyers”. (2) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction for purposes of consumer legislation. 17. FORGERIES Notwithstanding the preceding Condition, any Lot which proves to be a deliberate forgery (as defined) may be returned to us by you within 21 days of the auction provided it is in the same condition as when bought, and is accompanied by particulars identifying it from the relevant catalogue description and a written statement of defects. If we are satisfied from the evidence presented that the lot is a deliberate forgery we shall refund the money paid by you for the lot including any buyer’s premium provided that (1) if the catalogue description reflected the accepted view of scholars and experts as at the date of sale or (2) you personally are not able to transfer a good and marketable title to us, you shall have no rights under this condition. The right of return provided by this Condition is additional to any right or remedy provided by law or by these Conditions of Sale. GENERAL 18. We shall have the right at our discretion, to refuse admission to our premises or attendance at our auctions by any person. 9 (1) Any right to compensation for losses liabilities and expenses incurred in respect of and as a result of any breach of these Conditions and any exclusions provided by them shall be available to the seller and/or the auctioneer as appropriate. (2). Such rights and exclusions shall extend to and be deemed to be for the benefit of employees and agents of the seller and/or the auctioneer who may themselves enforce them. 20. Any notice to any buyer, seller, bidder or viewer may be given by first class mail in which case it shall be deemed to have been received by the addressee 48 hours after posting. 21. Special terms may be used in catalogue descriptions of particular classes of items (Books, Jewellery, paintings, guns, firearms etc) in which case the descriptions must be interpreted in accordance with any glossary or guidance notes appearing in the catalogue. These notices and terms will also form part of our terms and conditions of sales. 22. Any indulgence extended to bidders buyers or sellers by us notwithstanding the strict terms of these Conditions or of the Terms of Consignment shall affect the position at the relevant time only and in respect of that particular concession only; in all other respects these Conditions shall be construed as having full force and effect. 23. Scottish law applies to the interpretation of these Conditions. 14/1
