The Barons King and Earls of Lovelace
T
O UNDERSTAND the collection of furniture, paintings and other works of art in Torridon House, one must first know the story of the King family and their various homes over the course of the past two hundred years. The collection here contains the remnants of that rich history. It makes reference to various people and places in the family story: from the grand portraits and Lord Chancellor’s purses of 1st Lord and Lady King, through the silver dinner service bearing the crest of the 6th Lord and his new wife, to the magnificent dining table probably made for the 7th Lord and Lady. From the important group of gothic furniture which the 1st Earl commissioned for Horsley Towers, to the guns and trophy heads of the 4th Earl, a big game hunter in East Africa before the Second World War, this collection of artefacts is intimately entwined with an illustrious family through the ages. The fortunes of the King family, firstly as Barons King and later Earls of Lovelace, began with a certain Peter King (1669–1734) of Exeter, Devon. He was the son of Jerome King, originally from Glastonbury, and Anne Locke, sister of influential Enlightenment philosopher John Locke (whose portrait is lot 283 in the sale). After his early education Peter joined his father’s grocery business. Peter was a sharp, clever and studious boy and his predilection for learning was soon apparent. He spent most of his spare money on books and his spare time reading them. In 1691, when he was only twenty-two years old, he published his first book: An enquiry into the constitution, discipline, unity, and worship of the Primitive Church that flourished within the three first centuries after Christ. His uncle John Locke was impressed and advised his father to send him to Leiden University to pursue further study, with the aim of joining the higher branches of the legal profession. After three years in Leiden, Peter moved to London and entered himself as a student at the Inner Temple. In 1698 he was called to the Bar and progressed rapidly on the circuit and at Westminster, where he acquired a high reputation for his legal knowledge. In
Ockham Park, Surrey.
Peter, 1st Baron King of Ockham.
1699 he was returned to Parliament as the representative for Beer Alston, Devon, which he continued to hold through the five succeeding Parliaments. He made his maiden speech in the house, which was well received, in 1702. In 1704, he married Anne Seys, daughter of Richard Seys of Boverton, Glamorganshire and in 1710 bought Ockham Park, Surrey, which was to become the family seat for successive generations. Together they had four sons and two daughters. Peter went on to hold the office of Lord Chief Justice from 1714 and then in 1725 he became Lord Chancellor, a position he held for eight years. Peter was created 1st Lord King, Baron of Ockham, in 1725 by King George I. He retained his ‘seat on the woolsack’ as Lord Chancellor under George II until, in 1733, a paralysis compelled him to resign the Great Seal and his office. He died the following year and was buried at Ockham. Several portraits of Peter as Lord Chancellor can be found around the house at Torridon, the number reflecting his stature. The most impressive is probably the pair, with his wife Anne, which hang in the dining room (lot 80). Several of his Chancellor’s purse or ‘burse’ fronts are also in the sale (lots 49-50). Each of Peter King’s four sons succeeded to the title. Firstly John, 2nd Baron King of Ockham (1706–1740). He married Elizabeth Fry, daughter of John Fry of Yarty, Devon, in 1726. John was Outranger of Windsor Forest between 1726 and 1740 and Member of Parliament for Launceston between 1727 and 1734. He died at the age of thirty-four without children. He was

followed by Peter, 3rd Baron (1709–1754), who died unmarried at the age of forty-five. A portrait of Peter as a boy hangs on the stairs at Torridon (lot 206). Then came William, 4th Baron (1711–1767), who also died unmarried. Lastly was the youngest brother, Thomas, 5th Baron (1712–1779). Thomas married Catherina Troye, daughter of John Troye, one of the sovereign council of Brabant, in 1734. Although unconfirmed, it is presumably his portrait that hangs above the fireplace in the library (lot 285). The title then passed to Thomas’s son Peter (1736–1793), 6th Baron. Educated at Eton and then Trinity College, Cambridge, he married Charlotte Tredcroft, daughter of Edward Tredcroft of Horsham, Sussex in 1774. The majority of the impressive silver dinner service in the sale is hallmarked for the year of their marriage and engraved with their joint arms (lots 116-126). They had three sons, the eldest of whom, also Peter (1776– 1833), 7th Baron, became the next to inherit. Like his father, he was educated at Eton and then Trinity. After university he made a ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe, passing through Switzerland, Germany and the North of Italy. He took his seat in the House of Lords and made his first speech on 12th Feb 1800. In 1804,

he married Lady Hester Fortescue, daughter of Hugh, 1st Earl Fortescue, neighbour to the King’s extensive estates in Somerset. They would pass some months of the year in London, but the greater part of their time was spent at Ockham, to which Lord King was very much attached, and he made many improvements to both the house and grounds. It is interesting to think that much of the late Georgian and Regency furniture at Torridon, including the impressive dining table (lot 102) and the library table (lot 35), which sits beneath his portrait (lot 30), may well have been commissioned by Peter for Ockham around this time, before making its way to Torridon in the 20th century. It was at Ockham in the winter of 1828 that he prepared his material for his account of: The Life and Letters of John Locke, published the following spring. Upon his untimely death in 1833, the Earl Fortescue said of him: “He retained to the last the unclouded serenity of mind and sweetness of temper which had distinguished him through life”. By this time the King fortunes had grown and his seats were listed as Ockham Park in Surrey; Ashley Combe and Meyners, both in Somerset, and Yarty House, Devon. The eldest of the 7th Baron’s two sons, William (1805–1893), the 8th Baron King of Ockham and 1st Earl of Lovelace, was another significant figure in the family history. Following an established pattern of education at Eton and Trinity, he entered the diplomatic service and became secretary to Lord Nugent, Lord Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. It is thought that the William, 1st Earl of Lovelace.

portrait of a young man in Hellenic costume on the stairs at Torridon is a picture of William at this time (lot 201). William was recalled to England in 1833 on the relatively sudden death of his father, so his stay was reasonably short. However, he spoke modern Greek, French, Italian and Spanish and took the opportunity to travel extensively; he met the legendary Ali Pasha of Egypt and was perhaps not at all like the typical stuffy member of Corfu British society of the time so wonderfully described in Edward Lear’s diaries. He retained a love of the Eastern Mediterranean, which later influenced some of his architectural endeavours and presumably led to the collecting of such items as Amadeo Preziosi and Luigi Mayer’s paintings (lots 249-252) and possibly the unusual inlaid table from the library (lot 297), as well as various books on the region.
or Park. Mr Currie had pulled down ‘an old house’ on the site and in the 1820s commissioned Sir Charles Barry to build a house ‘in a plain Tudor style’. William continued to live at Ockham whilst he set about aggrandising Horsley, soon to be known as Horsley Towers after the addition of the stuccoed tower and great banqueting hall. He finally moved to Horsley Towers in 1846, making it his principal seat and letting out Ockham. He was his own architect and immensely proud of his achievements. He shaped the four arched trusses in the roof of the great hall using steam heat. In 1849, two years after its completion, he delivered a paper to the Institute of Civil Engineers on the formation of the trusses. No less an engineer than Isambard Kingdom Brunel was to have said: “In fact, he had seldom seen so simple and useful a roof, possessing such an amount of stiffness, and at the same time avoiding all thrusts upon the walls”. Further praise for his skills came at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851 when he won a medal for brickmaking, which pleased him greatly. The Ockham brickworks produced all the decorative bricks and moulded escutcheons used in his buildings. William was extremely proud of all his family connections and everywhere on his buildings,
At the age of twenty-eight and now Lord King, William returned to Ockham. Two years later he married Augusta Ada Byron, the only legitimate daughter of George Gordon, 6th Baron Byron, the celebrated poet. This brought the promise, in marriage settlement, of vast estates in the Midlands and also political advantage, for Ada’s cousin was Lord Melbourne, the Whig Prime Minister. Honours duly came his way and he was created an Earl in 1838, one of the elevations made to celebrate the coronation of Queen Victoria, who had succeeded to the throne in the previous year. The Lovelace title was chosen to mark the fact that Ada was, through the families of Byron, Milbanke, Noel and Lovelace, a descendant of the Barons Lovelace of Hurley. In 1840 William also became Lord Lieutenant of the county of Surrey; one of the highest social and political positions to which one could aspire in English county society at the time, and a position he held until his death some fifty-three years later. It has been suggested that as Lord Lieutenant, he wished to ‘make a show’ in the county and so he bought the East Horsley estate from William Currie, a London banker, in 1840. He also avidly bought up every bit of land and any houses or cottages that came on the market in the surrounding area. This was all made possible by the sale of properties in the Midlands. The house on the estate was originally known as East Horsley Place,

inside and out, could be found armorials of both his family and that of his wife. They can also be found on some of the furniture, most significantly the impressive gothic sideboard produced for Horsley around this time (lot 104). His wife, Lady Ada (1815-1852), was a significant figure in her own right. She had been a child prodigy: able to tackle geometry and mathematics, play the violin and guitar and fluent in several languages all by the age of eight. At eighteen she was presented at court, where she enjoyed the social life, but was said to have preferred astronomy. Married to the ‘easygoing’ William King at twenty, Ada was an extrovert in dress and conduct as well as a mathematical talent. A visit to the Mechanical Institute for a lecture on the ‘difference engine’ introduced her to mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage. Babbage and she struck up a close friendship and he became a regular visitor to their home. Between 1842 and 1843, she translated an article by Italian military engineer Luigi Menabrea on the engine, which she supplemented with an elaborate set of notes of her own, simply called: Notes. These have been considered by many to be the first computer program. She also however had a weakness for gambling and attempted to ‘beat the horses’ with a mathematical model which sadly went disastrously wrong, leaving her deeply in debt. At the same time, cancer began to take hold of her. She was forced to admit her gambling debts to her husband and much ill will was generated in the family at this time, with the Earl becoming estranged from her and their children. She died in 1852 at the age of thirty-six. Following Ada’s death, William travelled for a while. He then returned to Horsley and embarked on the architectural works in polychrome brick for which he is best known. In 1858 he built the tall round tower by the lake. The cloisters followed, together with the chapel and approach tunnel in 1859. His overall style has been termed ‘vaguely Rhenish Gothic’ although with other aspects that are almost Turkish and betray his affections for the Eastern Mediterranean. After the towers, he began work on the village during the 1860s, building a series of cottage lodges and bridges. He also improved both Ockham Park and Ashley Combe in an Italianate style between the 1830s and 60s. The 1st Earl was enlightened in the management of his estates and cared for his tenants. He founded the Ockham Schools long before a system of elementary education arrived in 1870. In 1860, he adopted the additional surname and arms of Noel by Royal license, having received the tenancy for life of the Wentworth properties through Anne Isabella Milbanke, mother of Ada. In 1865, William married again, to Jane Crawford Jenkins, widow of Edward Jenkins, an administrator in the Bengal civil service. They had one son. It was William who added a foothold in Torridon to the family’s estates. In 1886 he purchased the 12,000 acre Ben Damph Forest on the south side of Loch Torridon from Duncan Darroch, owner of the Torridon Estate. The sporting lodge, Ben
Peter and Manon, 4th Earl and Countess of Lovelace.
Damph House, was built the following year (the bells from its clock tower, dated 1887, are lot 18). After Willam’s death in 1893, the title passed to his surviving second son from his first marriage, Ralph King-Milbanke (1839– 1906), 2nd Earl of Lovelace and 13th Baron Wentworth. In early life an Alpine mountaineer, in late life he wrote: Astarte; a fragment of truth concerning George Gordon Byron, sixth lord Byron, recoreded by his grandson, published in 1905 in an edition of 200 copies. He married, firstly, Fannie Heriot, daughter of Reverend George Heriot, in 1869, and secondly, Mary Caroline Stuart-Wortley, daughter of Rt. Hon. James Archibald StuartWortley in 1880. Mary was a trained architect and, as Countess of Lovelace, was a patron and collabrator with the architect and designer Charles Voysey. The Lovelace title then passed to his step-brother, from the 1st Earl’s second marriage, Lionel Fortescue King (1865–1929), 3rd Earl, who resumed the name of King only by Royal Licence in 1908. Educated at Eton and then the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he went on to gain the rank of Captain in the service of the 9th Lancers. He was decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) and gained the rank of Major in the service of the Northumberland Fusiliers and the General List during the First World War. Some of the more military items in the sale, such as the pair of lances from the gun room (lot 187) and the prints from the First World War (lot 449) probably owe their presence in the house to Lionel. In 1895, he married Lady Edith Anson, daughter of Thomas George Anson, 2nd Earl of Lichfield and they had four children. In 1920, Lionel sold Horsley Towers to the famous aircraft maker Sir Thomas Sopwith. Ockham had passed into the hands

of the family of the 2nd Earl, so he moved to Whitwell Hatch, Haslemere, as well as retaining a house in Knightsbridge and the Ben Damph estate. His son, Peter Malcolm King (1905–1964), became the 4th Earl. Educated at Eton, after his father’s death Peter spent a lot of time in Africa, where he bought estates near Lake Babati in what was then Tanganykia (modern day Tanzania). As a youth, Peter had been sent out by his father to stay with Sir Stewart Gore-Browne to ‘become a man’, during which time he developed a passion for the place. He was a renowned big game hunter and friends with many of the colourful characters in East Africa in the interwar period, including the famous Swedish hunter Baron Bror von Blixen-Fineke, husband of Karen Blixen, who later wrote: Out of Africa, about her time on the continent. Peter built the ‘Fig Tree Club’ for his friends and neighbours overlooking Lake Babati, which was run at one point by Bror’s second wife, Jacqueline ‘Cockie’ Birkbeck. The club served as the social centre of the area and is probably the “little hotel overlooking the lake” that Hemmingway wrote of in Green Hills of Africa. Peter was particularly good friends with Bror’s nephew, Baron Carl-Frederik von Blixen-Fineke and after Carl-Frederik’s early death in 1950 Peter married his widow Manon Lis, instantly becoming step-father to four young children. Their own son, also Peter, was born the following year. Peter had left Africa before the outbreak of the Second World War, so the Earl and his new family divided their time between the Von Blixen estate in Sweden and Ben Damph, their remaining home in Britain. The remoteness of Torridon must have appealed to a man who had spent many years in Africa, as
well as the opportunity to hunt deer on the hills. Some of the sporting guns in the sale (lots 193-199) belonged to Peter and the heads of a water buffalo shot by Peter and an elk shot by Carl-Frederik (lots 164-165) hang side by side the gun room, testament to their great friendship. Latterly a reclusive character, when Peter heard they were to build a road past Ben Damph to Shieldaig, he took the opportunity to buy Torridon house and estate in 1960 and moved across the loch. Situated on the northern shore of Upper Loch Torridon, beneath the dramatic mountain ridges of Beinn Alligin and Liathach, the house was built by Duncan Darroch in 1876 on an estate purchased from Colonel A. C. McBarnet in 1873 and previously in the possession of the Lords of the Isles. The architect was Alexander Ross, who had built Inverness Cathedral. Constructed from the ancient Torridon red sandstone, it was designed for family living, as well as to support parties during the shooting and fishing seasons. Darroch, who had sold the south side of the estate to the 1st Earl of Lovelace, was a well-loved landlord. So much so, in fact, that on his death in 1910 one hundred men of Torridon carried his body from the house to a spot on the shore road on its way to the family burial place at Gourock. An inscribed stone by the road marks the spot to this day. The estate was then bought by James Buchanan, 1st Baron Woolavington, who made his fortune in the Black & White whisky company. He later sold it to Canadian banker and manufacturer Sir Charles Blair Gordon. Gordon died in 1939 and eight years later the estate was sold to Richard Gunter from Yorkshire. On his death in 1960, Peter, 4th Earl, reunited the estates of Torridon and Ben Damph. They

then turned their former home into a hotel. Today it is the Torridon Hotel, although no longer in family hands. On the 4th Earl’s death in 1964, his son Peter Axel William Locke King (b. 1951) became the 5th Earl of Lovelace. The estate, including the dramatic mountain ranges, was given to the government in lieu of his father’s death duties and three years later was transferred to the National Trust for Scotland, who looks after it today. The hotel was also sold off around this time. Peter spent his childhood in Torridon and Sweden, as well as Denmark, the South of France and the Canary Islands. After school in London, he stayed in the capital and went into the nightclub business. He divided his time between London and Torridon and later ran various boutique shops in Inverness, as well as buying back the Torridon Hotel in the late 70s. He married Kirsteen Kennedy, daughter of the gaelic singer Calum Kennedy, but the marriage didn’t last. After his mother died in 1990, Peter sold the hotel again and spent more time in London, where he took his seat in the House of Lords. He met his second wife, Kathleen, Countess of Lovelace, whilst visiting mutual friends in Turkey in 1993. He was involved in the property business in London during the 1990s, but then decided to spend more time at Torridon from the beginning of the 21st century. Now ready for another move, Peter and Kathleen have decided it is time to pass both Torridon House and its accumulation of treasures on to new owners.

19th Century Gothic Revival Furniture
T
HE GROUP of Gothic Revival furniture from Torridon (lots 10, 11, 12, 103 and 104) is thought to have originally been commissioned by the 1st Earl of Lovelace sometime between 1846 and 1860 to furnish his ongoing Gothic alterations to Horsley Towers, originally designed by Sir Charles Barry in the 1820s. The Gothic Revival had been championed from the 1830s by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852), who had organised and contributed to the Medieval Court at the Great Exhibition in 1851 (at which Lord Lovelace, already with a keen interest in designing gothic architecture, won a medal for his brickmaking). To Pugin, Gothic architecture was infused with the high Christian ideals and values that had been eclipsed by classicism and were being destroyed by industrialisation. As well as his work in the design of buildings he designed furniture, and from his architectural practice he also designed and produced stained glass, metalwork, textiles and jewellery, applying his vision to the whole field of design. Nowhere was this better demonstrated that with his work with Sir Charles Barry at the new Palace of Westminster which they worked on from 1835, with most of the interior work being carried out by the London decorator John Gregory Crace. The Gothic revival architects who followed him, notably William Burges and George Edward Street carried on this new approach, taking responsibility for designing the building and its internal fittings and furnishings.
The Medieval Court at the Great Exhibition, 1851.
In his 1835 publication, Gothic Furniture in the Style of the 15th Century, Pugin illustrates furniture designs based on his interpretations of what were in fact slightly later styles. Some of the designs showed the joints exposed rather than covered up, described by the late Clive Wainwright as the “earliest published exemplification of his principle of revealed construction applied to the design of an object”. As Pugin states in his book: “the smallest detail should have a meaning or serve a purpose; and even the construction itself should vary with the material employed, and the design adapted to the material in which it is executed.” Little wonder then that his work had such a profound effect on the work of the artists and craftsmen of the Arts & Crafts Movement, with value it placed on craftsmanship and creativity, the importance of function and purpose, honesty of construction and the beauty of natural materials, rather than purely that of decoration. Pugin’s designs continued to be produced after his death, either to their original designs or adapted from them by firms such as Holland & Sons, Gillows, Howard of Berners Street and, most notably, by his former collaborator J. G. Crace. There is no question that many of the details in the furniture offered here come straight from his published designs, and are early examples of Pugin’s continuing influence.

10 HB500/9 PAIR OF LARGE VICTORIAN OAK AND PAINTED GLASTONBURY CHAIRS MANNER OF A. W. N. PUGIN, MID 19TH CENTURY of Gothic style, each with carved toprail above quatrefoil carved back and Lovelace coat of arms, solid seat with upholstered cushion, shaped arms, on X-framed legs with recessed brass castors, joined by a turned stretcher (2) 88cm wide, 117cm high, 75cm deep Provenance: Comissioned for Horsley Towers, Surrey, probably between 1846 and 1860 (see illustration on page 14, where they appear against the back wall). Note: An original medieval Glastonbury chair survived in the Bishop’s Palace at Wells where Pugin almost certainly saw it, and another example was known at Strawberry Hill. Pugin copied the form exactly, although he did not add the original carved decoration to his versions (see V&A collection, British Galleries, Room 122e). The present examples are elaborately carved to the backs with coats of arms. The full coat of arms dates from the 30 June 1838, when William King, 8th Baron King of Ockham was elevated to the titles 1st Earl of Lovelace and Viscount Ockham. The chairs were likely to have been made after 1846, when the 1st Earl started living at Horsley Towers, and before 1860; as on the 29 Sept 1860 William King adopted the name and arms King-Noel by royal licence. Literature: Atterbury, Paul and Wainwright, Clive, Pugin: A Gothic Passion, London 1994, p. 132, illus. plate 233.

In 1738 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He showed a keen interest in all scientific matters and maintained an observatory at his home in Hackney. Peter Monamy was at one time listed, in the Catalogue of Engraved National Portraits, as being ‘reckoned the finest painter of shipping in England.’ Trained as both painter and house decorator, it was his marine scenes that accrued his fame and recognition, including high esteem from active seafaring men, who claimed ‘the forms and buildings of shipping with all the tackles, ropes and sails which he thoroughly understood made his paintings of greater value.’ In the high point of his career, Monamy headed a considerable studio, and a number of assistants would have been involved in painting production. Many of Monamy’s works were well-known through the substantial prints created within his life-time, and widely reproduced posthumously.

32Y HB500/64 SICILIAN TRAPANI GILT METAL AND RED CORAL DESK SET PROBABLY 18TH CENTURY comprising: inkwell, pounce pot, candlestick and cover, bell and seal, on pierced tray engraved with Papal coat of arms (6) bell: 11cm high Note: From the 16th century until the end of the 18th century, Trapani was the home of a very specialized production of gilt-metal works of art profusely decorated with red coral. The Trapani workshops were patronized by the Court of the Viceroys in Sicily, and many pieces of Trapani work may have found their way to European courts as diplomatic gifts. However, the majority of the output seems to have been for the local market or for export to Southern Italy or Spain. Many religious works ended up in churches and secular pieces were acquired by nobles and the court. Trapani work is characterized by the use of small pieces of coral carved into various shapes and set in a ground of gilt-copper to obtain a variety of effects. For a similar desk set, see Christie’s New York, 7th June 2013, lot 416.

35Y HB500/45 REGENCY ROSEWOOD AND BRASS INLAID LIBRARY TABLE MANNER OF THOMAS HOPE, POSSIBLY BY GEORGE OAKLEY, EARLY 19TH CENTURY the rounded rectangular top above two frieze drawers, on trestle end supports joined by a stretcher, brass paw feet with castors 112cm wide, 75cm high, 71cm deep Note: This table is reminicent of the ‘Grecian’ style in the French manner that the pioneering collector and designer Thomas Hope (1769-1831) popularised in Britain, not least with the publication of ‘Household Furniture and Interior Decoration’ in 1807. The furniture manufacturer George Oakley (c.1765-1841) was greatly infuenced by Hope’s designs and other French sources and produced fashionable furniture in this style, specializing in boulle brass inlay. The firm’s designs and craftsmanship earned them royal patronage and Oakley worked for the Prince Regent at Carlton House, as well as supplying furniture and upholstery for the Mansion House and the Bank of England. His work for the Cheere family of Papworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, is perhaps his best-known commission. Similar handles and stretcher design can be seen on a table offered by Bonham’s London, 7th March 2012, lot 227. It has been described as arguably the most important china retailer in London in the early nineteenth century. It exercised enormous power and influence over the manufacturers, particularly including Coalport, insisting that the products that Mortlocks sold should bear the Mortlock mark rather than that of the original maker. By 1803, Mortlock was claiming to supply “Her Majesty [Queen Charlotte] and the Royal Family” with “Coalbrook Dale [Coalport] porcelain”. In the late 1830s Mortlock provided Coalport pieces for Queen Victoria. The arms show Lovelace with Byron/Noel/Wentworth/Lovelace in pretence, with earl’s coronet above, indicating a date after 1838.

68 HB500/263 JACQUES COURTOIS, KNOWN AS ‘IL BOURGOGNONE’ (FRENCH 1621-1676) A CAVALRY SKIRMISH Oil on canvas 45.5cm x 72cm (18in x 28.5in) and a companion, AN OFFICER AND TROOPS LEAVING A GROTTO (2) Note: The true aim of a battle scene painter in the seventeenth century, was to create the sense that when viewing the painting, the viewer felt they were in the centre of the action. At a time when military skill was held in such high regard these scenes glorified war and action and displayed the drama of human endeavour, as well as boasting of skill-full battlefield logistics and manoeuvres. Courtois trained, at first, under his artist father before travelling to Italy and serving in the French military. Battle-scenes drew him back to art and it was within this genre that he was to find his subject and develop his oeuvre. He quickly achieved success, depicting with precision and flair the battle exploits of wealthy patrons from Tuscany and Venice. His work can also be found in many churches in Italy as he turned to religion later in life. Courtois was known for working alla prima from rapid pen sketches, a quick fierce approach that mirrors the action he depicted. Considered a master within the battle-scene genre, his talent was positively recognised by his painter peers.

102 HB500/120 GEORGE III MAHOGANY QUADRUPLE PILLAR DINING TABLE POSSIBLY BY GILLOWS, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY comprising two D ends and two centre sections, each on turned column and four channelled downswept legs with brass castors 345cm long, 71cm high, 175.5cm wide Provenance: Probably commissioned for Ockham Park, Surrey. Note: The design of this table is similar to the dining table from Blair Castle, sold in these rooms 14th March 2012, lot 292, except that the present lot has the addition of a chamfered moulding on the legs and castors to the feet. The Blair table was similar to one supplied by Gillows to Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, for Eglinton Castle, Ayrshire, circa 1800 and now in Dumfries House. The same pattern was also made for Bellamour, Staffordshire in 1798 by cabinet-maker George Atkinson, who executed a number of similar dining tables for Gillows between 1790 and 1802. For a five pedestal table with similar legs, see Sotheby’s London, 5th Jun 2007, lot 140. A six pedestal example with similar legs and attributed to Gillows was sold by Christie’s London, 11th May 2005, lot 40. Literature: Boynton, L., Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, 1995, no. 55

PUGIN, MID 19TH CENTURY of Gothic style, including two carvers, each with moulded rectangular back, the back and seat covered in red floral pattern cut velvet, on faceted knopped legs and toupee feet, the armchairs with additional carving, the back legs with buttresses fitted with ceramic castors (16) chairs: 48cm wide, 94cm high, 49cm deep; armchairs: 56cm wide, 110cm high, 58cm deep Provenance: Comissioned for Horsley Towers, Surrey, probably after 1850.
Dining chair from Scarrisbrick Hall, designed by A.W.N. Pugin, c. 1837-40.
Note: Pugin designed a more elaborate x-frame armchair for Scarisbrick Hall in 1836, based on a design for a chair which he had illustrated in Gothic Furniture of 1835, which demonstrates his archaeological approach to chair design. The armchairs in this set borrow several characteristics from that chair, most notably the elaborate scrollwork terminals on the arms and the form of the back, with its rounded and moulded rectangular form and arched top rail with carved panel. The legs are reminiscent of Pugin’s chairs for the House of Commons, however the brackets for castors at the rear of the back legs look to be an eccentric Lovelace addition. Literature: Atterbury, Paul and Wainwright, Clive, Pugin: A Gothic Passion, London 1994, pp.131-132, illus. plates 229 and 232.

104 HB500/110 VICTORIAN OAK AND PAINTED SIDEBOARD MANNER OF A. W. N. PUGIN, MID 19TH CENTURY of Gothic style, the carved panelled back with five painted shields, the moulded eared rectangular top above a frieze drawer with two further shields, flanked by two cupboard doors, on stiff leaf carved faceted legs joined by an undertier 287cm wide, 145cm high, 68cm deep Provenance: Comissioned for Horsley Towers, Surrey, probably between 1846 and 1860. Note: This fine sideboard shows similarities to examples by J. C. Crace, prominent London interior decorator of the mid-19th century, and collaborator of A. W. N. Pugin. Crace’s association with Pugin is well documented, most notably their work on the interiors of the Palace of Westminster, and the firm continued to make furniture to his designs long after his death in 1852. Crace showed an elaborate sideboard at both the Paris Exhibition in 1855 and the second London Exhibition of 1862 and there are also examples of sideboards by Crace, which rely heavily on Pugin’s designs, at Lismore Castle, Co. Waterford, Abney Hall in Cheshire and at Tyntesfield in Somerset. The panelling on this example is reminiscent of designs used in the Palace of Westminster and illustrated in True Principles (1841). The sideboard is embellished with painted coats of arms, all of which pertain to the Lovelace lineage. This style of embellishment relates to furniture designed by Pugin and most particularly to his large bookcase, designed for the Great Exhibition of 1851, and his own dining room cabinet of 1845, both of which incorporate similar shields relating to the owner. The shields here date from after 8th July 1835, when William King, then 8th Baron King of Ockham, married the Hon. Augusta Ada Byron. The top row from left to right show the arms of Troye; the Noel family; King with Byron in pretence; and Lovelace (Barons 1627-1737); and the two lower shields denote Byron and Wentworth. This sideboard was likely to have been made after 1846 when the 1st Earl of Lovelace started living at Horsley and before 1860 when he adopted the name and arms King-Noel by royal licence. Literature: Atterbury, Paul and Wainwright, Clive, Pugin: A Gothic Passion, London 1994, pp.131-132, illus. plates 229 and 232. The King Silver Dinner Service
T
HE ARMS AND CRESTS on all but the first and last (later) lots of this George III silver dinner service are those of King impaling Tredcroft for Peter King (1736-1793), later 6th Baron King of Ockham, and his wife, Charlotte, daughter of Edward Tredcroft of Horsham in Sussex. They were married on the 24th November 1774. As this impressive service is hallmarked for 1773, which means it was marked sometime between May 1773 and May 1774, one can only assume that it was commissioned as a wedding present for the couple. Peter's father Thomas, 5th Baron King, had married Wilhelmina Catherina, the daughter of John Troye, a judge of the sovereign Council of Brabant, in Delft in 1734. His wife brought with her a large dowry and Thomas became a partner in a Dutch trading house. Peter was born in the Hague, but later educated at Eton and then Trinity College, Cambridge. His political leaning was to the Whigs. In 1787 he voted for the Regency Bill. His son, the 7th Baron, later followed him into the world politics. Peter was buried at the family seat, Ockham at the age of sixty-seven. Thomas Heming was principal goldsmith to King George III from 1760-1782. Lord Bute, one of Heming’s most important patrons, had encouraged his appointment. He produced plate and regalia for the king’s coronation, and a significant number of his pieces remain in the Royal Collection. 208 HB500/302 ATTRIBUTED TO GERRIT VAN HONTHORST HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF FREDERICK, ELECTOR OF PALATINE, IN ARMOUR Oil on panel 71cm x 56cm (28in x 22in) Note: Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Born in Utrecht, early in his career he travelled to Rome where he discovered the work of Caravaggio and quickly embraced his dramatic style. These dark paintings caused such a sensation that he earned the nickname Gherardo delle Notti (Gerard of the Night Scenes). His importance in spreading knowledge and appreciation of Caravaggio’s work to the North should not be underestimated. He returned home around 1620 and soon adopted a new approach, a much lighter palette. In 1628 he travelled to England to paint the Royal Family and from this point on he worked in a court style, painting portraits at the Hague and earning an international reputation for his work.

297 HB500/39 UNUSUAL PARQUETRY, MOTHER-OF-PEARL AND BRASS INLAID OCCASIONAL TABLE POSSIBLY OTTOMAN, LATE 18TH CENTURY the dished circular top with radiating star inlay, on spirally turned column and three cabriole legs with scrolled feet 77cm diameter, 71cm high Note: The inlay on this very British form of tripod table is highly unusual and may have been a specific comission. The use of star and crescent mother-of-pearl inlay hints at a possible Ottoman origin or involvement, perhaps Istanbul. The wire inlay is reminiscent of similar work on Ottoman firearms. William King, 1st Earl of Lovelace, was secretary to Lord Nugent, comissioner of the Ionian Islands, prior to 1833. Whilst there, he travelled extensively, meeting Mehemet Ali, Pasha of Egypt. He may have picked this piece up during his time in the region.

The volume broadcast to all important European princes the splendour and magnificence of Louis’s celebration that there was a young and powerful French monarch who now had a male heir.

399 HB500/488 BASKETT, JOHN, PRINTER THE HOLY BIBLE Oxford: J. Baskett, 1717. 2 volumes, large folio, presentation copy to Lord King, with ALS from John Baskett dated 20 April 1725 bound in, ruled in red, contemporary panelled red morocco gilt, spines gilt, joints split, extremities rubbed (2) Note: A fine binding with, unusually, a letter from the distinguished Oxford printer John Baskett. One of John Baskett’s most magnificent productions was this edition in two volumes, imperial folio, printed at Oxford (the Old Testament in 1717 and New Testament in 1716), a work of great typographical beauty, styled by Dibdin ‘the most magnificent’ of the Oxford Bibles. It is known as ‘The Vinegar Bible,’ from an error in the headline of St. Luke, ch. xx., which reads ’The parable of the vinegar,’ instead of ‘The parable of the vineyard.’ It is so carelessly printed that it was at once named ‘A Baskett-full of printers’ errors.’ The large-paper copies contain a frontispiece by Du Bosc and vignettes, &c., by Vandergucht.

We understand that your collection is worth more than the sum of its parts.
Collections sell better as collections. That belief is at the heart of our approach to auctioneering. Over the course of our long history, we have seen this borne out time and time again: from the contents of grand homes to corporate collections, from contemporary art to Chinese snuff bottles; there is little we have not handled and sold well.
EDINBURGH
Each collection is unique and often has an emotional connection to the owners who create or inherit them. Our team work closely with our clients to provide a carefully tailored approach to the sale of their collections.

DEFINITIONS In these Conditions of Sale (Buyers): "Auctioneer" means Lyon & Turnbull Ltd or its authorised auctioneer, as appropriate; "Hammer price" means the level of bidding reached (at or above any reserve) when the Auctioneer brings down the hammer; "Lot" means each Item offered for sale by Lyon & Turnbull; "Purchase Price" is the Hammer Price and applicable Buyer's Premium; "Reserve" means the lowest price below which an item cannot be sold; "Total amount due" means the hammer price in respect of the lot sold together with any premium, Value Added Tax or other taxes chargeable and any additional charges payable by a defaulting Buyer under these Conditions; “You”, “Your” means the Buyer “Us”, “Our”, “We” etc. refers to Lyon & Turnbull Ltd The singular includes the plural and vice versa as appropriate. 2. AGENCY Lyon & Turnbull acts as agent solely for and in the interests of the Seller. We do not act for Buyers in this role and does not give advice to Buyers. When Lyon & Turnbull make a statement about a lot it is doing so on behalf of the Seller of the lot. The Auctioneer normally acts as agent only and disclaims any responsibility for default by Sellers or Buyers. 3. BIDDING PROCEDURES AND THE BUYER (a) Bidders are required to register their particulars before bidding and to satisfy any security and credit references or arrangements before entering the auction room to view or bid; (b) The maker of the highest bid accepted by the Auctioneer conducting the sale shall be the Buyer and any dispute shall be settled at the Auctioneer's absolute discretion.
(c) Once made, no bid may be withdrawn. (d) Our right to bid on behalf of Sellers is expressly reserved up to the amount of any reserve. (e) The right to refuse any bid is also reserved. (f) Commission Bids: While prospective Buyers are strongly advised to attend the auction and are always responsible for any decision to bid for a particular lot and shall be assumed to have carefully inspected and satisfied themselves as to its condition we shall, if so instructed, clearly and in writing execute bids on their behalf. Neither the Auctioneer nor our employees nor agents shall be responsible for any failure to do so. Where two or more commission bids at the same level are recorded we reserve the right in our absolute discretion to prefer the first bid so made. (g) Telephone Bids: If a prospective Buyer makes arrangements with us prior to the commencement of the sale we will use reasonable efforts to contact them to enable them to participate in bidding by telephone. We do not accept liability for failure to do so or for errors and omissions in connections. (h) Online Bidding: We will use reasonable efforts to carry out online bids and do not accept liability for equipment failure, inability to access the internet or software malfunctions related to execution of online bids/ live bidding. 4. INCREMENTS Bidding increments shall be at the Auctioneer's sole discretion. 5. THE PURCHASE PRICE For each lot purchased a Buyer's Premium of 25% is payable on the first £50,000 of the hammer price, 20% thereafter. VAT at the appropriate rate is charged on the Buyer's Premium. No VAT is payable on the hammer price or premium for printed books or unframed maps bought at auction. Live online bidding is subject to an additional 3% premium (charged by the live bidding service provider Invaluable). This additional premium is subject to VAT at the appropriate rate as above. 6. VALUE ADDED TAX Value Added Tax is charged at the appropriate rate prevailing by law at the date of sale and is payable by Buyers of relevant lots. (1) Lots affixed with (†): Value Added Tax on the hammer price is imposed by law on all items affixed with
a dagger (†). This imposition of VAT maybe because the Seller is registered for VAT within the European Union and is not operating under a Margin Scheme. (2) Lots affixed with (*): A reduced rate of Value Added Tax on the hammer price of 5% is payable. This indicates that a lot has been imported from outwith the European Union. This reduced rate is applicable to Antique items. (3) Lots affixed with [†]: Standard rate of Value Added Tax on the hammer price and premium is payable. This applies to items that have been imported from outwith the European Union and do not fall within the reduced rate category outlined above. 7. DROIT de SUITE This symbol § indicates works which may be subject to the Droit de Suite or Artist's Resale Right, which took effect in the United Kingdom on 14th February 2006. We are required to collect a royalty payment for all qualifying works of art. Under new legislation which came into effect on 1st January 2012 this applies to living artists and artists who have died in the last 70 years. This royalty will be charged to the Buyer on the hammer price and in addition to the Buyer’s premium. It will not apply to works where the hammer price is less than €1,000 (euros). The charge for works of art sold at and above €1,000 (euros) and below €50,000 (euros) is 4%. For items selling above €50,000 (euros), charges are calculated on a sliding scale. All royalty charges are paid to the Design and Artists Copyright Society (‘DACS’) and no handling costs or additional fees are retained by the auctioneer. Resale royalties are not subject to VAT. Please note that the royalty payment is calculated on the rate of exchange at the European Central Bank on the date of the sale. More information on Droit de Suite is available at www.dacs.org.uk. 8. PAYMENT (1) Within 7 days of a lot being sold you will: (a) Pay to us the total amount due in cash or by such other method as is agreed by us. We accept cash, bank transfer (details on request), debit cards and Visa or MasterCard credit cards. We do not accept American Express. (b) Please note there is a surcharge of 2% when using credit cards. (c) Please note that under The Money Laundering Regulations 2007 we cannot accept cash payments over €15,000 (euros). (2) Any payments by you to us may be applied by us

towards any sums owing by you to us howsoever incurred and without agreement by you or your agent, whether express or implied.. 9. TITLE AND COLLECTION OF PURCHASES (1) The ownership of any lots purchased shall not pass to you until you have made payment in full to us of the total amount due. (2) You shall at your own risk and expense take away any lots that you have purchased and paid for not later than 7 working days following the day of the auction or upon the clearance of any cheque used for payment whichever is later. We can provide you with a list of shippers. However, we will not be responsible for the acts or omissions of carriers or packers whether or not recommended by us. (3) No purchase can be claimed or removed until it has been paid for. (4) It is the Buyer’s responsibility to ascertain collection procedures, particularly if the sale is not being held at our main sale room and the potential storage charges for lots not collected by the appropriate time. (5) Export of goods: Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain (a) whether an export licence is required and (b) whether there is any specific prohibition on importing goods of that character, e.g. items that may contain prohibited materials such as ivory or rhino horn. It is the buyer’s sole responsibility to obtain any relevant export or import licence. The denial of any licence or any delay in obtaining licences shall neither justify the recession of any sale not any delay in making full payment for the lot. 10. REMEDIES FOR NON·PAYMENT OR FAILURE TO COLLECT PURCHASES (1) If any lot is not paid for in full and taken away in accordance with these Conditions or if there is any other breach of these Conditions, we, as agent for the Sellers and on their behalf, shall at our absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights we may have, be entitled to exercise one or more of the following rights and remedies: (a) to proceed against you for damages for breach of contract; (b) to rescind the contract for sale of that lot and/or any other lots sold by us to you; (c) to resell the lot (by auction or private treaty) in which case you shall be responsible for any resulting deficiency in the total amount due (after crediting any part payment and adding any resale costs). (d) to remove, store and insure the lot in the case of storage, either at our premises or elsewhere and to recover from you all costs incurred in respect thereof; (e) to charge interest at a rate not exceeding 1.5% per month above the current base rate on all sums outstanding for more than 7 working days after the sale; (f) to retain that or any other lot sold to you until you pay the total amount due; (g) to reject or ignore bids from you or your agent at future auctions or to impose conditions before any such bids shall be accepted; (h) to apply any proceeds of sale of other lots due or which become due to you towards the settlement of the total amount due by you and to exercise a lien over any of your property in our possession for any purpose until the debt due is satisfied.satisfied. 11. DESCRIPTIONS AND CONDITION (1) Whilst we seek to describe lots accurately, it may be impractical for us to carry out exhaustive due diligence on each lot. Prospective Buyers are given ample opportunities to view and inspect before any sale and they (and any independent experts on their behalf) must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any description applied to a lot. Prospective Buyers also bid on the understanding that, inevitably, representations or statements by us as to authorship, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance, condition or estimated selling price involve matters of opinion. We undertake that any such opinion shall be honestly and reasonably held and only accept liability for opinions given negligently or fraudulently. Subject to the foregoing neither we the auctioneer or our employees or agents accept liability for the correctness of such opinions and no warranties, whether relating to description, condition or quality of lots, express, implied or statutory, are given. Please note that photographs/images provided may not be fully representative of the condition of the lot and should not be relied upon as indicative of the overall condition of the lot.
(2) Condition reports: Condition reports are provided on our website or upon request. The absence of a report does not imply that a lot is without imperfections. Large numbers of such requests are received shortly before each sale and department specialists and administration will endeavor to respond to all requests although we offer no guarantee. Any statement in relation to the lot is merely an expression of opinion of the Seller or Lyon & Turnbull and should not be relied upon as an inducement to bid on the lot. Lots are available for inspection prior to the sale and you are strongly advised to examine any lot in which you are interested prior to the sale. Our condition reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers. Our condition report does not form any contract between Lyon & Turnbull and the Buyer. The Condition Reports do not affect the Seller’s obligations in any way. (3) Estimates: Estimates are placed on each lot to help Buyers gauge the sums involved for the purchase of a particular lot. Estimates do not include the Buyer’s Premium or VAT. Estimates are a matter of opinion and prepared in advance. Estimates may be subject to change and are for guidance only and should not be relied upon. (4) Catalogue Alterations: Lot descriptions and estimates are prepared in advance of the sale and may be subject to change. Any alterations will be announced on the catalogue alteration sheet, made available prior to the sale. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to make themselves aware to any alterations which may have occurred. (5) Electrical Goods: are sold as “works of art” only and if bought for use must be checked over for compliance with safety regulations by a qualified electrician first. Use of such goods is entirely at the risk of the Buyer and no warranties as to safety of the goods are given. (6) Upholstered items: are sold as “works of art” only and if bought for use must be checked over for compliance with current safety regulation. Use of such goods is entirely at the risk of the Buyer and no warranties as to safety of the goods are given. Lyon & Turnbull provide no guarantee as to the originality of any wood/material contained within the item. (7) Special terms may be used in catalogue descriptions of particular classes of items (Books, Jewellery, Paintings, Guns, Firearms etc.) in which case the descriptions must be interpreted in accordance with any glossary appearing in the catalogue. These notices and terms will also form part of our terms and conditions of sales. 12. BOOKS, CLOCKS & WATCHES (1) Books - Collation: The books etc. (lots 305-451) have not been collated and all lots are sold not subject to return. (2) Clocks & Watches: All lots are sold “as seen”, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a clock or watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most clocks and watches will have been repaired during their normal lifetime and may now incorporate additional/newer parts. Furthermore, Lyon & Turnbull makes no representation or warranty that any clock or watch is in working order. As clocks and watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which the Buyer is solely responsible, may be necessary. Buyers should also be aware that Lyon & Turnbull cannot guarantee a watch will remain waterproof if the back is removed. Buyers should be aware that the importing watches such as Rolex, Frank Muller and Corum into the United States is highly restricted. These watches cannot be shipped to the USA and only imported personally. 13. CITES Please be aware that all lots marked with the symbol Y are subject to CITES regulations when exporting these items outside the EU. These regulations may be found at http://www.defra.gov.uk/ahvla-en/ importsexports/cites/ Lyon & Turnbull accepts no liability for any lots which may be subject to CITES but have not be identified as such. 14. SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY (a) The same Conditions of Sale (Buyers) shall apply to sales by private treaty. (b) Private treaty sales made under these Conditions are deemed to be sales by auction and subject to our agreed charges for Sellers and Buyers.
(c) Lyon & Turnbull undertakes to inform the Seller of any offers it receives in relation to an item prior to any Proposed Sale, excluding the normal method of commission bids. (d) For the purposes of a private treaty sale, if a lot is sold in any other currency than Sterling, the exchange rate is to be taken on the date of sale. 15. THIRD PARTY LIABILITY All members of the public on our premises are there at their own risk and must note the lay-out of the accommodation, safety and security arrangements. Accordingly, neither the Auctioneer nor our employees or agents shall incur liability for death or personal injury or similarly for the safety of the property of persons visiting prior to, during or after a sale. 16. GENERAL (a) We shall have the right at our discretion, to refuse admission to our premises or attendance at our auctions by any person. (c) Notices to Lyon & Turnbull should be in writing and addressed to Nick Curnow at 33 Broughton Place, Edinburgh EH1 3RR, quoting the reference number specified at the beginning of the sale catalogue. (d) Should any provision of these Conditions of Sale be held unenforceable for any reason, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect. (e) These Conditions of Sale are not assignable by either party without the other's prior written consent. No act, omission or delay by Lyon & Turnbull shall be deemed a waiver or release of any of its rights. (f) The contract between the parties may be varied by the parties by agreement and in writing. 17. DATA PROTECTION In connection with the management and operation of our business and the marketing and supply of Lyon & Turnbull's services, or as required by law, we may ask the Buyer to provide personal information about themselves or obtain information about the Buyer from third parties (e.g. credit information). The Buyer hereby agrees to the release by Lyon & Turnbull of the Buyer’s name and contact details to the seller or the seller’s solicitor in the event of any dispute between Lyon & Turnbull and the Buyer and/or Lyon & Turnbull and the Seller. Lyon & Turnbull will give prior written notice of the release of any such details to the Seller of the Seller’s solicitor. 18. FORCE MA JEURE Lyon & Turnbull shall be under no liability if they shall be unable to carry out any provision of the Contract of Sale for any reason beyond their control including (without limiting the foregoing) an act of God, legislation, war, fire, flood, drought, failure of power supply, lock-out, strike or other action taken by employees in contemplation or furtherance of a dispute or owing to any inability to procure materials required for the performance of the contract. 19.
