The Collection of Professor J.E. Webb (1915-2011) Professor Joe E. Webb was a renowned zoologist who published works on a variety of subjects from the ecology of Lagos Lagoon to the respiratory mechanisms of melophagus ovinus. He is most known for setting up two zoology departments, one at Ibadan, Nigeria in 1948 and one at Westfield College, University of London, in 1960, where he later became Vice Principal. Professor Webb's interest in collecting was sparked at the very beginning of his career, when he worked as assistant to the Director of the Natural History Museum and had ample opportunity to meet colleagues from the other South Kensington Museums. Initially interested in silver and tribal art, Webb switched to Asian works of art in the late 1960's after losing the bulk of his silver in a burglary. Over the course of nearly twenty years, he forged a close friendship with William Clayton, a reputable London dealer and connoisseur of Oriental works based on Bury Street, St James. Clayton specialised in jade and ceramics, two fields that Webb came to particularly concentrate on in his collecting and acquiring of artworks. Meticulous about record keeping, Professor Webb filed receipts for all his purchases, which are possible to view today alongside the collection for sale. Webb died aged 96 in 2011 in his house in Hampstead Garden Suburb, surrounded by his collection.

224 KOREAN WHITE-GLAZED MOON JAR

JOSEON DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY the large oviform jar resting on a low straight foot echoed in shape by a short straight neck with a lipped mouth rim, covered all over apart from the foot ring in a smooth white glaze with fine crackles concentrated at the lower part of the body and at the mouth rim 37cm high Provenance: Acquired from William Clayton Fine Chinese Jade, Porcelain and Oriental Works of Art, with original receipt dated 28th August 1973. Note: Moon jars derive their name from their likeness to a full moon both in shape and colour. Produced the 17th till the mid-18th century, they were used for storing rice, soy sauce, alcohol and occasionally displaying flowers. Because of their sheer size, jars of this kind were made by throwing the top and bottom sections separately and joining them at the centre. In many cases these two sections differ slightly in size and thickness, creating an intriguing contour, as visible in the present jar. With their simple and minimalistic shape, moon jars embody the principles of frugality and purity that were unique to Korean culture governed by Neo -Confucian ideals at that time. The asymmetry of the jar caused by warping on the wheel or slumping in the kiln was viewed not as a shortcoming but rather as nature taking its course. There are very few samples of moon jars remaining in the world. One similar sample can be found in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Accession No C.398-1991.

260 HE753/1 ANONYMOUS (LATE QING DYNASTY) SIX ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE STRANGE TALES OF LIAOZHAI (LIAOZHAI HUAZHUAN) comprising six leaves, each framed and glazed on both sides, ink and colour on paper, with gilt highlights, illustrating the stories of Lu Yaguan, Bird Whisperer (Niao Yu), Luo Zu, Jin Yongnian, Dragon and Spider (Long Xi Zhu) and Yu Qu’e (6) 43.5cm high, 33.5cm wide (sight) Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Brenda Cleather (1905-2011); thence by descent. Brenda acquired the paintings from an antique dealer on Connaught Street, London, in 1940 or 1941. The dealer was closing down his business because of the bombing of London during the Blitz and was keen to clear his stock. Brenda worked as a studio manager for the BBC European Service and was therefore required to remain in London for the duration of the war. Before the war, Brenda had been an actress, performing under the name ‘Brenda Gordon Cleather’ in productions of the Thorndike/Casson company, in the West End and on Broadway, with the likes of Laurence Olivier and Jack Hawkins.

Painting the Strange Pu Songling (1614-1715) is one of the most colourful and eccentric figures of Chinese literature. Sitting his first Imperial examination at the age 18, Pu failed to become a civil official numerous times, until the age of 67 when he was finally awarded the Gongsheng degree, reputedly only because the examiner was fond of his books. Strange Tales from Liaozhai Studio (Chinese: Liao Zhai Zhi Yi) - Pu’s masterpiece - consists of 674 short stories. Legend has it that Pu used to set up a tea stand at the roadside, stopping travellers and asking them to share bizarre anecdotes. If their tales featured the supernatural, Pu would give them a bowl of porridge. Pu compiled these tales over 30 years into one of China’s favourite short story collections. So beloved are they, that the merchant Xu Run commissioned their illustrations as a gift for Empress Cixi’s birthday in 1894. Various artists collaborated, creating 48 albums containing 725 paintings, of which 46 albums are now held in The National Museum of China after they went missing during the wars. The present set of six paintings demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, delicate outlining and colouring, and meticulous gilt highlights, and are accompanied by calligraphy on the reverse. One noteworthy painting illustrates the story of Jin Yongnian, the fair merchant whose elderly wife is blessed with a child at the age of seventy-eight as a reward for Jin’s virtue.

268 tHC327/1 ZHANG DAQIAN (1899-1983) AND STUDIO SPRING DAWN OVER MOUNT EMEI scroll, ink and colour on paper, inscribed and signed, with two seals of the artist reading ‘Daqian Jushi’ and ‘Zhang Ai’, dated twelfth month, sixty-eighth year (of the Republic, 1979) 61cm high, 120cm long (sight) Provenance: The Collection of Zhao Tailai (b.1954), acquired from the artist by Zhao’s aunt; accompanied by a letter by Zhao confirming the authenticity of the piece. Also known as Chiu Tai-loy, Zhao is the great grandson of Wu Tingfang (1842-1922), a Qing Dynasty diplomat who later served as foreign minister in the Republic Period. In 1981 Zhao inherited from his aunt (one of Wu Tingfang’s grandchildren) a large collection of Chinese works of art, including the present lot. Zhao is most well-known for donating more than 50,000 pieces of Chinese antiquities to museums and public institutions in Mainland China. The Guangzhou Museum of Art has a dedicated hall to house his donations. Zhao practised as a painter himself. In 1971, the then 72year-old Zhang Daqian visited Zhao at home and signed a painting of the young art student with “Master of the Future”. Note: The present painting is executed in Zhang Daqian’s famous splashed-ink technique, which he developed in the 1950s. The technique consists in pouring intense mineral colours and broad washes of ink on to the paper and allowing them to obtain spontaneous and seemingly random forms on the highly absorbent medium. The amorphous spread of colours is then refined by contour lines and further linear details. Although Zhang Daqian himself attributed this style to the splashed-ink technique of the ancient painter Wang Mo, many believe it to be related to his exposure to modern Western art, especially to Abstract Expressionism. Zhang Daqian was eighty when he painted the present work. It is known that with failing health, he sought help from his students who would prepare parts of the works for him. It is likely that he entrusted the line drawings in this work to his students whilst carrying out the coloursplashing himself. This painting shows the famous Golden Peak of Mount Emei in a powerful burst of ultramarine and black whilst the neighbouring and more distant peaks are still covered in a veil of mist, as if not having fully awakened to the dawn of spring. *Please note that online bidding will not be available for this lot.
