“ The reason that I am attending Lyon is because it’s a good school and it’s an opportunity for me to be able to continue to play football as well as have some of my education paid for. When I came to visit the school, I fell in love with the area and the campus. I am really looking forward to attending Lyon.” — Edward Shukitt Captain John L. INDEPENDENCE!
I
t’s certainly fitting that Lyon College lies at the heart of Arkansas’ Independence County. As the state’s oldest independent college, located in the second oldest city in the state, Batesville, we are grounded in a rich tradition that focuses on the role of the individual. We see self-determination as a rite of passage that allows you to fully realize your greatness. Our award-winning faculty members serve to mentor your burgeoning mind, challenging your ideas in order to see them reach their full potential. And our one-ofa-kind Honor System puts responsibility in your hands, allowing you to mold your unique vision and serve it with dignity and character. Speaking of “one-of-a-kind” qualities, there are many opportunities that you can only find at Lyon College. For instance, Lyon is the only school wherein you’ll find a community like ours—one distinguished by our strong liberal arts curriculum, unique honor code, and awardwinning professors, but also one located in a welcoming city at a premier destination for lovers of the outdoors. Plus, how many other colleges host an annual Scottish festival with over 8,000 attendants? We dare you to find another school besides Lyon. We also dare you to find another school whose outdoor program is specifically focused on minimizing our impact on the environment, as well as learning new skills and having fun. Here at Lyon, we believe that learning character and integrity, learning how to find a place within your community, and learning how to meld this area’s history with your view of the future are just as important as all the classroom learning that leads to your degree. We proudly welcome you to Lyon College and Independence County, Arkansas—where your independence can be achieved.

WHAT’S
YO U R MAJOR?
Ah, the oft-asked question that can keep prospective students up at night. We invite you to alleviate some of that pressure by considering the fact that at Lyon College the answer is entirely up to you. In addition to major programs of study in 16 areas, as well as 13 concentrations and pre-professional programs, Lyon also gives you the option of developing your own individualized major. For instance, if you’d like to express your love of Spanish artist Salvador Dalí through a one-person, 14-act surrealist theatre performance on the historical development of psychoanalytic theory, you’ll just have to earn the approval of your advisor, division chair, and dean of the faculty. And when you do, we’ll be the first in line to purchase a ticket for your show.
A MATTER OF TRUS
T
The Lyon College Honor Code gives you the opportunity to achieve true independence by allowing you to complete coursework and exams outside the classroom. All students pledge to uphold high standards of academic integrity during their time at Lyon, and the Honor System is governed by the Honor Council, which consists of members of the student body elected by their peers.

Students and faculty alike grow personally, spiritually, and intellectually by being completely immersed in the international setting. I recently led trips to Germany and Italy, during which I observed students completely change their worldview and global perspective as they saw firsthand the important artworks, historical landmarks, and cultural practices in these breathtaking locations. It is amazing to see the Sistine Chapel or Michelangelo’s David in person, and it creates the opportunity to connect to content from Lyon College courses in an awesome way.” — Dustyn Bork, Lyon College Associate Professor of Art

All climbing, camping, and sporting equipment available is free for Lyon students, faculty, and staff. yon College has a history of excellence on and off the field. Every year, our robust sports program sees dozens of all-conference and all-American athletes. Most recently, 2015 alumnus Griffin Glaude signed as a free agent with the MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays and is currently playing in the Rookie League. During the 2014–2015 school year, Lyon began a new history of excellence in football and wrestling. The state-of-the-art, 7,800-square-foot Hatcher Wrestling Center is now open and Lyon College is competing in both men’s and women’s wrestling. The women’s team made the Top 25 in the nation during their inaugural year and the men’s team will be competing this year for the first-ever American Midwest Conference championship in the spring of 2016. This is also a big year for football at Lyon. Fall 2015’s 90-player roster makes up the first official lineup since 1962. But don’t worry, our Scots won’t be using equipment or facilities that are older than the Apollo program. They’ll be creating history of their own from our new 22,000-square-foot indoor football training center and a newly renovated stadium. With this new generation of players and staff comes new anticipation and excitement about all football can bring to Lyon. Whether you want to be on the field as the Scots begin to dominate the gridiron, cheering from the stands with your classmates, or participating in Lyon’s newly reinstated marching and pep bands, this is sure to be an exciting time to be involved in Scots athletics. Lyon’s attractive 136-acre campus features many modern academic and co-curricular facilities, such as the stateof-the-art Derby Center for Science and Mathematics, the black-box Holloway Theatre, and the Lyon Business and Economics Building (modeled after Harvard Business School facilities). Classrooms are kept intentionally small to support our mission of personalized education, and faculty offices are more than accessible—they’re the reason why we’re here! Our nine student residence halls are grouped into the three “Houses” that make up our British-styled house system, with designated faculty residing alongside you to offer another touchstone during your time at Lyon. Because student enrollment at Lyon has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years, we opened two new residence halls during the fall of 2015. Each residence hall houses about 100 lucky students who are able to make the spacious community areas, study rooms, and brand new communal cooking spaces their own.
