Hawk’s Bill Crag Hike 8:00am - 1:00pm Join a group of hikers to explore some of the great trails in the region. Hawk’s bill crag is one of the most photographed points in all of the Ozarks. Don’t miss out on this great photo opportunity! All skill levels welcome. Meet at the Pavillion. Hosted by Lyon College.

Bouldering / Climbing Horseshoe Canyon Ranch 2:00pm - 5:30pm Meet at the pavilion to join a crew that will be heading out to enjoy the wonderful bouldering / climbing that HCR has to offer. Bring your pads, shoes, chalk, climbing gear and excitement. Gear is available to use but limited. All skill levels welcome! Hosted by University of Arkansas and Lyon College.

Indian Creek Hike 8:00am - 1:00pm Though slightly more physically demanding, this hike can be one of the most rewarding. This hike takes place just off of the Buffalo River Trail and meanders up the creek bed to the famed eye-of-the-needle. Don’t miss out on a chance to see a truly unique setting tucked into the heart of the Ozarks. Meet at the Pavillion. Hosted by Lyon College.

Disc Golf 2:00pm - 5:30pm Whether you are a seasoned vet or a new-comer to the sport, meet at the pavilion to explore the amazing 18-hole disc golf course at the ranch. Bring your own discs or use discs that are provided. Discs are available to use but are limited. Meet at the Lodge. Zip Line Head to the HCR Trading Post to register for a discounted Zip-Line ride! Kayak Rolling Session 2:00pm - 5:30pm Get introduced to the basic components of a kayak roll. All gear will be provided. Meet at the pool.

Breaking Point… Pushing the Limits of Climbing Equipment

Planning a Rock Climbing Competition Andrew Robinson

This presentation will present data from a series of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) tests involving equipment and knots commonly used in climbing scenarios. With a UTS machine and a little lab time, we’ve managed to pull apart carabiners, runners, cordelette, ropes, webbing, harnesses, and more! Come see how the equipment holds up compared to its factory ratings.

Meal Planning and Backcountry Nutrition

This presentation will cover the basics of planning for and hosting a rock climbing competition. This will be in a time line format created from planning and hosting previous rock climbing competitions. This is intended for climbing wall managers and student employees preparing to host a climbing competition.

This presentation will cover the basics of menu planning for outdoor trips. Ideal menus for different types of trips (such as car camping, backpacking, water trips, etc.) will be presented as well as tips and tricks for meals, snacks, food preparation, and packaging. We will also cover basic concepts of backcountry nutrition such as the importance of staying hydrated, fueled with carbohydrate heavy meals (at light weights), different ways to incorporate protein, and adapting meals for participants with allergies, food restrictions, and picky eaters.

Presentation will encompass a large variety of areas within Arkansas to go rock climbing. Whether you are interested in making a personal trip or need ideas on new places to lead trips for your programs, this presentation will try to expand your knowledge of the many places to climb along with logistics and pictures of the area. There has recently been a lot of new development in the climbing seen in Arkansas.

Philanthropy and the Outdoors: Volunteer Trips in Outdoor Programming Nathan Tripp

Giving back is an essential part of outdoor enthusiasm. Outdoor Programs can help foster this mentality with their participants. Find out how to get started with NIU Outdoor Adventures! We will discuss trips we have done in the past and what we are planning for the future.

Sea Caves, Ice Climbing, Ski, and Snowshoe…Been up North Lately? Mathern, Coopman

Have you ever wanted to snowshoe or ice climb? How about hike across Lake Superior to explore frozen sea caves? This presentation session will provide attendees with the wide range of Upper Midwest winter programming options. We know the Rocky Mountains are attractive, but Wisconsin/ Minnesota are worth your time! Session attendees will leave with a variety of cantact options for winter equipment, programming, and destination information in the Upper Midwest region.

Development and Assessment of Learning Outcomes: An organic process that parallels what Universities/employers want

George Bieker

This presentation will help you research and identify learning outcomes you want to see developed in student employees, create a rubric-based tracking program implemented into staff training programs, and identify at least one method for assessment of learning outcomes.

After two months in Africa and six times on Mount Kilimanjaro, George Bieker will share his experiences via visual and auditory stimulation. After which he will share information regarding permitting, travel, logistics, and typical costs of a trip to the mountain. Presentation will close with an open discussion on anything and everything related to guiding, mountains, travel, and other shenanigans.

Bird watching can be a very enjoyable experience if one knows how to do it right. The idea of this workshop is to create something extra for climbers to do when hiking to the climb site. Occupying the mind and applying new knowledge are the building blocks of a healthier mind. Bird watching can be a great way to combine these activities for a more beneficial outdoor experience.

Time to retire that rope? What are you going to do with it next? This session will leave you with a wide variety of arts, crafts, and project ideas for your program and retired climbing equipment. Presenters will have a variety of rope rug/ mat templates and jigs available for attendees to use during the session. Is it hot plates, lanyards, key chains, pot plant hangers you’re looking for? We’ll make those too!

Leave No Trace Jennifer Hazelrigs

Leave No Trace is a non-profit organization to education recreational enthusiasts on the importance of minimally impacting the environment. This interactive session will focus on the reasons to practice and educate others on the 7 principles of LNT. Participants will walk away with new activities and strategies to teach LNT to their peers. Free swag will be distributed to the most enthusiastic participants! Don’t miss out on this fun session!

3:15 PM—4:45 PM

Yoga for Climbers Amy Graves

This will be an 90 minutes yoga session to educate climbers on how to use yoga to enhance climbing performance mentally and physically. The group will be lead through a yoga session and will be taught how to use this practice on their own. Participants will be given packets on the information taught to help develop a yoga practice for climbing.

Expanding Your Outdoor Arsenal with Fly Fishing!

An introduction to fly fishing and how you can easily incorporate fly fishing into your outdoor program. During this session we will discuss equipment, cost associated with fly fishing, and strategies for successful fly fishing trips.

WHY THE OZARKS? With vast opportunities for excellent paddling, climbing, hiking, backpacking, and mountain and road biking, it’s hard to think of a reason why not. Paddle the 135 free-flowing miles of our nation’s first national river, the Buffalo National River. Lace up your hiking boots and enjoy the river by foot on the 37-mile Buffalo River Trail. For more excellent hiking and backpacking, Ozark Highlands Trail stretching 218 miles eastward from Lake Fort Smith. If climbing is your thing, our conference host Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is only the beginning of the Ozarks’ long list of crags. LYON COLLEGE’S

Lyon Education and Adventure Program Lyon College is located in the eastern foothills of the Ozark Mountains and on the beautiful White River in Batesville. To take advantage of our location, Lyon College has developed the Lyon Education and Adventure Program (LEAP) that provides its students with information and access to the many activities available in this gateway to the Ozarks. LEAP offers activities on the ropes course, trips to the Grand Canyon, and international travel.

The UNIVERSITY of ARKANSAS Outdoor Connection Center

The purpose of the Outdoor Connection Center is to meet the outdoor educational, recreational, and personal development needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the U of A. The Outdoor Connection Center offers camping gear rental, canoe and kayak rental, two climbing facilities (free of charge), and runs weekend and extended outdoor adventures. Our semester schedule usually includes all-inclusive trips to epic destinations such as the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area, and many destinations in the Ozark Mountains. Also, the OCC includes bicycle rentals and a full-service bike shop.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION In order for everyone's conference experience to be as enjoyable as possible, please follow these guidelines. • Help keep Horseshoe Canyon Ranch clean by picking up after yourself. Pack out all trash. Recycling bins are located on the porch of the Trading Co. • Please do not bring glass bottles into the Ranch. • Remember that we are not the only guests at the Ranch this weekend; please keep noise at a respectful level during the dark hours • There are restrooms in the Trading Co., barn, lodge, and in the shower building in the North Forty Campground.

• Please leave all ranch animals, including ranch dogs, alone. • If consuming adult beverages, please be of age and drink responsibly. In the case of an emergency, or if you need assistance for any reason during the conference, note the following information: • The nearest hospital is North Arkansas Regional Medical Center located at 620 North Main Street in Harrison. From the Ranch, go east on HWY-74 to Jasper, then North on HWY-7 to Harrison. Reach the hospital by phone at 870-414-4000. • For non-medical emergencies or assistance, stop by your hosts’ cabin, Eagles Nest cabin, marked on the map on page 2 of this booklet.
