yon’s current students chose to come here for a number of reasons, as you will see below. But among those reasons were the ability to pursue their dreams independently and the support they get when they need a helping hand along the way. Lyon’s students have a diverse range of talents and interests. We welcome you to picture yourself here. “ I am a graduate of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts. I chose Lyon because of its rigorous classes, dedicated teachers, and hospitable environment.” — Angeline Anderson Humphrey, Arkansas, Class of 2019 “Striving to do my best has always been a priority for me during any activity or assignment. Whether it is on the gridiron or in the classroom, I do not like to leave a job unfinished. Having this mindset is not always easy, and when tough times come, it is beneficial to have a strong support group. I chose Lyon College because I believe it will be the foundation for my life ahead and will open even more doors of opportunity. At Lyon, I will be able to have closer, one-on-one interactions with my professors, which is better than disappearing into a sea of faces at other large-scale colleges. Attending a SOAR Day showed me that the faculty at Lyon really want to invest in their students. Also, coming into Lyon I will have the privilege of playing on their first football team in over 60 years! I believe this college experience will help me to develop into a well-rounded man and to obtain my dream career. GO SCOTS!” —Johnathan Johninson, Class of 2019

“I chose Lyon College because the representative, Mary Catherine, impressed me when she explained that Lyon College helps students flourish in a small town college. Also, when I toured the campus, I was amazed at how clean and pristine it was and that it was like a close-knit community. The things I am looking forward to as I begin at Lyon are meeting new people and the diversity of classes.” —Deta Chappell, Corning, AR, Class of 2019

INDEPENDENCE “ From the start of my college search, I knew I would thrive best in a smaller, private college or university. After visiting Lyon, I felt comfort and security in knowing that a sense of home at a college did exist. To me, Lyon is small enough to get the one-on-one education I was looking for, while also encouraging me to take opportunities outside of my comfort zone. In high school, I enjoyed being involved in many student organizations, and I am truly excited to continue that at Lyon. Although I do not play sports, I will cheer my fellow classmates in victory. I am delighted to start at a college that appreciates every aspect of me, and I cannot wait to welcome others.” — Anna Beth Haney West Memphis, AR Class of 2019 “ After careful consideration, I chose Lyon College because I can tell they can care for my needs. The small classrooms and one-on-one attention will help me achieve my future goals. At Lyon, I can also continue my wrestling career. This, when paired with my business major, will help me accomplish my dreams of owning my own gym one day.” — Bruce Whitehead Conroe, TX Class of 2019 “ As of right now, I plan on completing the pre-med program. What drew me to Lyon was their quick acceptance process. They were the fastest school I encountered as far as processing, and they were good at keeping me updated and informed after my acceptance.” — Chase Chalk Little Rock, AR Class of 2019

“I chose to go to Lyon because, from the very start, the atmosphere felt inviting and welcoming. Marching Band is one of the organizations that I’ve been involved with the most during high school, and I plan to stay involved through college. — Madison Bangert Brookland, AR Class of 2019 “Choosing to come to Lyon was easy for me for a lot of reasons, but here are the main two: I want to go to medical school, and there’s a sense of community here I’ve never seen at any other college. While the acceptance rate to medical school here is outstanding, I know that it’s not just because of challenging classes. It’s because professors and mentors are willing to guide students in the right direction and help them reach their goals. Additionally, coming from a small town, it was extremely important to me not to lose the sense of community I always felt growing up. Every time I visited Lyon, I was reassured that I wouldn’t. It’s obvious that the students here care about each other, and the professors care about the students. Because of these things, I’m extremely excited to begin my academic career at Lyon. I can’t wait to become a part of all it has to offer!” — Natalie Milligan Lake City, AR Class of 2019

“ I was born in Encinitas, California, but moved to Texarkana, Texas, when I was around 6. My family struggled many times during my childhood to remain financially stable in California. When we moved to Texas, however, my dad received a well-paying job and now plans to create his own business one day. My parents did not have the opportunity for a good education, which makes me work harder, since I have comparatively endless opportunities. Lyon is one of these great opportunities. Lyon is the first college I have seen that places this much trust and inspires so much determination in each student. I love the connection between the faculty and the students and cannot wait to be a part of the Lyon traditions!” — Luis Omar Moreno Texarkana, TX, Class of 2019 “ In high school, I played linebacker for the Kennedale Wildcats and will be playing football for the Lyon Scots beginning this fall. Over the past four years, I received state honors in football, as well as track. Both of my parents played sports at the collegiate level which gave me a strong desire to compete at the college level. I look forward to beginning my collegiate career with Lyon College.” — Taylor Thibeau Kennedale, TX, Class of 2019 “ I lived in a dormitory, college-like setting for the last two years of high school, and from that I knew what I was looking for in a college. I toured plenty of other schools, and none of them impressed me. But when I experienced the Lyon campus, it stuck; the campus and people impressed me more than any other. By the time I left that day, after experiencing the atmosphere of Lyon, I knew there was no other school where I would want to spend the next four years.” — Payton Henson Spanish and French major Class of 2019 O N L Y L Y O N 5

INDEPENDENCE COMES WITH

DECISIONS

What’s your major? Ah, the oft-asked question that can keep undeclared students up at night. We encourage you to get a good night’s rest by remembering that at Lyon College, the answer is entirely up to you. Lyon offers major programs of study in 16 areas, as well as 13 concentrations and preprofessional programs. But if you still can’t decide on the right program for you, Lyon also gives you the option of developing your own individualized major. For instance, if you’d like to study the national economic impact of WWE wrestling over the last ten years and compare it to the GDPs of small or developing nations, you’ll just have to earn the approval of your advisor, division chair, and dean of the faculty. We wonder if they could take on Lichtenstein—metaphorically speaking, of course.

INDEPENDENCE COMES WITH T R

UST

The Lyon College Honor Code trusts you with the opportunity to achieve true independence by allowing you to complete coursework and exams outside the classroom. All students pledge to uphold high standards of academic integrity during their time at Lyon, and the Honor System is governed by the Honor Council, which consists of members of the student body elected by their peers.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

T

o the naked eye, Batesville, Arkansas appears to be your ordinary, sleepy, southern town. The quaint community of just over 10,000 sits in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, on the banks of the White River, 90 minutes from the state capital, Little Rock. But it is Batesville’s seemingly unassuming nature that makes it such a unique treasure. This is actually a premier destination where lovers of the outdoors come to enjoy their days hiking, canoeing, and rock climbing, while the area’s many trout streams and crappie ponds lure thousands of fishermen every year hoping to reel in the “big one.” The county seat also serves as a commercial, medical, government, and cultural hub for northeastern Arkansas. Once you’re here, you’ll see that Batesville is the centerpiece of quite an extraordinary region.

A L E A G U E OF OUR OWN As we’re sure your parents have made you painfully aware, money does not grow on trees—at least not yet (we certainly applaud your efforts to make this dream a reality). Until then, you will be pleased to know there’s Lyon League, an organization made up of local businesses that offer discounts on products and services to Lyon students, faculty, and staff. To receive discounts, keep an eye out for Lyon League signs in area businesses and always be prepared with your school ID.

EXCELLENCE YOU CAN AFFORD Do higher tuition rates always equate to a “better” education? At Lyon College, we argue that misconception. Lyon’s tuition is 20% lower than comparable liberal arts colleges. And yet we’re regularly recognized as one of the best private, selective liberal arts colleges in the region. Plus, nearly all incoming freshmen are eligible for and receive financial aid or merit-based scholarships. That means you’ll experience a unique combination of high quality academics and affordability available only at Lyon.
