LIFE AFTER LYON: A MEDICAL ALUMNI PROFILE
A Letter from the President Fall 2013 Volume XL, Number 2 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF/ LAYOUT Nell Tebbetts, ’07 EDITOR/DESIGNER Josh Tate
You may have noticed in the national media lately that many are questioning the value of a college education. These analysts express concern about the cost and whether or not that cost is justified. At the same time, scores of “experts” tout the virtues, mainly in terms of price tag and convenience, of “massive open online courses” (MOOCs). However, whether you are sitting in a university classroom with 300 other students or at your kitchen table looking at a computer screen, you are not engaged in the personalized form of education that is the hallmark of Lyon College. What we do at Lyon and other commonplace approaches to education in America today truly have nothing in common.

Small classes where the teachers know all the students and work with them regularly outside of class offer the most valuable and beneficial way to shape those who will lead the next generation. Lectures in a vast impersonal hall simply cannot provide what is gained when a professor and 15 students gather for class. When I taught at Lyon, I was glad to devote hours discussing research papers with my students. By the time a student enrolled in a third or fourth course of mine, I would know just how to guide the work of that particular individual.

A selective, independent, undergraduate, residential teaching and learning community affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Lyon encourages the free intellectual inquiry essential to social, ethical, and spiritual growth. Advances in technology have affected teaching methods, but can never replace those wonderfully dedicated faculty who develop personal relationships with their students. After all, we are not training people simply to repeat what someone else has articulated; we are teaching them to develop their own ideas and beliefs, so they can pursue their own callings. Helping young people cultivate the art of thinking deeply and communicating clearly is especially challenging in a society dominated by tweeting and texting. So, while the newshounds are captivated by our establishing the football team and our recruiting Chinese students, the substance of what Lyon does has not changed. How we go about this is regularly adjusted to keep up with new technology and the changing nature of the student population, but we continue our commitment to providing an education that ensures the success of our graduates. That is the constant in our ever changing world. What a joy it is to be at a College that understands and pursues its mission. Sincerely,

BEST Lyon College has recently been named one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation by four different entities. U.S. News and World Report ranked Lyon in the top tier of best national liberal arts colleges for the seventh year in a row. Lyon also made the list of colleges whose students graduated with the least debt load. The Princeton Review recognized Lyon as a “Best Southeastern College” in its annual report for the tenth consecutive year, and Lyon is included in Forbes.com’s “America’s Best Colleges” ranking. Washington Monthly magazine’s annual College Guide named Lyon one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country.

Life after Lyon: the healing touch Lyon alumni have met great success in medical careers all over the nation. From dentists to neurologists (and even a forensic chemist), they all took their first steps toward their careers at Lyon College. Dr. Julea Garner, ’89, is much more than a family physician in Highland, Arkansas. She is a private pilot. She is a world traveler. And according to Garner, she has Lyon College to thank for all of it. Garner initially attended Lyon to better her chances at being accepted into medical school. She found encouragement to pursue professional goals in her classes, quickly discovering new personal goals as well. “I was taught to question everything,” she said. Garner explained how Lyon’s professors encouraged her to expand her worldview, leading her to travel quite a bit while still an undergraduate. Garner traveled to England, 2

Austria, Germany, and Italy with groups from Lyon, and remembers camping on the Adriatic Sea. She continued expanding her worldview in medical school, opting to work in Alaska for one winter during her residency. “I’m sure everyone thought I was crazy,” she mused, “but it was phenomenal.” During her residency, she also obtained a private pilot’s license, expanding the adventurous nature she developed when studying at Lyon. “I was challenged with the teaching and in personal aspects,” Garner said of Lyon. “It helped me develop a lot of character. // ON CAMPUS The Lyon College Pipe Band was founded nearly thirty years ago by Dr. Ralph Graham. In conjunction with the annual Arkansas Scottish Festival, the pipe band has become an integral part of the Lyon College experience. The sound of bagpipes is one of the first things a prospective student hears when visiting the campus and bonding with the College. The call of the pipe leads a freshman to matriculation and is one of the last sounds a graduating senior hears as the flame is passed from torch to torch around Bryan Lake at the conclusion of The Scots Walk. Throughout the time a student spends on campus the pipe is nearly ubiquitous, as was immortalized on a t-shirt in 2004: “Lyon College, where the bagpipes never stop . . . EVER!”

The band has competed three times at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and hopes to bring a world championship trophy home to Batesville the next time they attend. When the pipe band is combined with students from the Highland dance classes, full participation in the Scottish Heritage Program has been as high as forty individuals at one time. The distinctive Lyon College tartan is recognized far and wide, even by non-pipers. The band has represented the College in New York City, New Orleans, at opening ceremonies at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, and by performing at countless competitions, Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan worship services, Burns Night celebrations and parades throughout the region. Important events on campus are marked by the band or individual pipers. Building on the foundation of the Scottish Heritage Program, Lyon College is now broadening its scope by developing a Celtic Studies minor. Arts faculty take center stage From 19 years of service to the newly employed, Lyon College’s fine arts faculty have travelled from all corners of the United States to teach visual arts, music, and theatre and lead students to embrace art culture as part of their present and future lives. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, it may not come as a surprise that newcomer Assistant Professor of Theatre Dr. Fonzie Geary knows the winners of every Kentucky Derby by heart. “I am a major horse racing enthusiast,” said Geary. “I don’t gamble; my interest has more to do with the sport and the rich history of the sport.” It was Geary’s English teacher who first drew him to theatre. “My end-of-year project involved groups writing and performing their own play,” he explained. “I found myself going at this project with alacrity. I won Best Actor.”

However, despite his theatre activity, Geary never considered a career in the field; he was a psychology major who mastered in clinical psychology and worked as a psychotherapist. “Theatre was just something I did for fun,” said Geary. “But by the end of my undergrad [years] I discovered that theatre was where my heart lay. I went back to school and was soon convinced I had made the right decision. I was genuinely happy with the direction my life was heading. So I kept going. And here I am.”
Though he considers himself a man born into art, it took the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger’s disintegration for Assistant Professor of Art Dustyn Bork to discover his passion. “I was interested in astronomy and thought being an astronaut sounded cool,” said Bork. “The Challenger helped me realize that I didn’t actually want the risk of going into space, but rather just enjoyed studying and drawing the space shuttles.” Bork’s art has taken him across America and the world, but his most profound experience was his residency in Italy in 2011. “It was amazing to spend a month in Italy,” said Bork. “It is awe-inspiring and humbling to see over 2,000 years of artistic creation and innovation in the art capital of the western tradition. My art changed at that moment. I realized there’s passion and drive to create inherent in all of us, and that experience motivates you to not hesitate. Do not wait.”
Born in the fourth largest city in the country, Houston-born Morgan Page, Visiting Professor of Art, is comfortable back in the American South. “Before Lyon I was teaching in Connecticut,” said Page. “It was a very different atmosphere. In Texas we smile at everyone and you’ll likely hold the door open for your worst enemy. It’s just Southern hospitality. People can be very cold in the Northeast.” Inspired by photography and video, Page typically works in the world of documentary and has shown in galleries and museums across Texas, Tennessee, New Jersey, and New York.

“My work in Memphis and New Jersey was the most personally transformative for me, I think. Throughout my work in those places, I experienced so much compassion and empathy both on my part and the people I interviewed, photographed, and videotaped. That work has greatly impacted my life.”

// ON CAMPUS A native of Athens, Georgia, Josephine E. Brown Professor of Music and College Organist Dr. Russell Stinson came to Lyon in 1994. Stinson grew up in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, where as a high school student he succeeded his mother as the organist at the Wilkesboro Baptist Church. He is a widely published Bach scholar (indeed, the foundation of his career lies with Bach) with five books and numerous articles, reviews, and editions to his merit. “I knew I had to be a professional musician when my organ teacher assigned me Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” said Stinson. “It was inevitable.” When asked what the most memorable moments in his career were, Stinson stated: “Hearing the music of Bach in Leipzig, Germany, in the churches where he worked; hearing the music of Brahms in the Musikverein in Vienna, where he conducted; and performing Steppenwolf’s ‘The Pusher’ at the local YMCA as a teenager.”

Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Michael Oriatti joined the Lyon College faculty in January 2013. He is a faculty member in the Rensselaer Program of Church Music and Liturgy in Indiana, and has previously served on faculty at Columbia College Chicago and as Interim Director of Choral Activities at the University of Chicago. A philosophy major for a time as an undergrad (though he never took a philosophy class), Oriatti was confident he would be an art major before he attended college. “I was always musical,” said Oriatti. “But after excelling in the undergrad music courses and enjoying singing in the university choral ensembles, I was convinced that music was the answer for a career.” Oriatti has directed the Edgewater Singers Community Chorus, The Hinsdale Chorale, and the Rockefeller Chapel Choir (to name a few), and this year has begun directing the Batesville Choral Society and the Weston Music Studio’s Highlander Youth Singers, Batesville’s first community children’s choir.
Sixty-two years since the College last fielded an intercollegiate football team, the Board of Trustees has voted unanimousely to reinstate the sport. by Jon Krueger, Sports Information Director Fall 2013

// ON CAMPUS
The Lyon College Board of Trustees made a bold move in June when it voted to reinstate its football program after a 62-year absence. The College embarked on a vision not only to enhance its campus community, but also solidify the institution’s relationship with Batesville and the northeast Arkansas community. The reason for the reinstatement of football is complex, according to Lyon President Dr. Donald Weatherman. “First and foremost, we exist for education,” Dr. Weatherman stated. “Football will afford us the opportunity to provide that education to more students. It is my priority to maintain our high academic standards and admissions requirements for all student-athletes.” A feasibility study conducted in the spring and led by Lyon College Director of Athletics Kevin Jenkins showed that not only would the football program pay for itself, it would also create additional revenue for the institution due to the additional students it would attract. “We have a three-year phase-in program that includes bringing in approximately 60 to 65 student-athletes by the fall of 2014, and then approximately 100 to 110 by the fall of 2015,” Jenkins explained. He went on to say that the College’s plan is to construct a football field house by next fall, and for players who begin classes in the fall of 2014 to go through workouts the first season. Kirk Kelley, who engineered the 12

start-up of the Scots’ baseball program and served as head coach from 1992 to 2009 (also holding the role of director of athletics in his final four years at the institution) was hired as the football program’s head coach in July. “We’ll probably hold at least two football scrimmages during the fall of 2014, so the public will have an opportunity to come out and get a look at the team,” Kelley stated. Home games for the Scots will be played at Batesville High School’s Pioneer Stadium. The Scots will begin intercollegiate play in 2015 and have already been accepted into the NAIA’s Central States Football League as a full member during their first year of play. Other members of the conference include Langston University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and Bacone College from Oklahoma and Southwest Assemblies of God University, Texas College, and Wayland Baptist University from Texas.
Dr. Weatherman, who has stated that Lyon College’s goal is to raise its current population of about 600 students to a target number of 800, said the growth of the student population by 25 percent could cause some problems—good problems. “We will probably have some problems initially with housing and classes,” the president noted. “We are a residential college that prides itself in a personalized education. Both of these could be stretched during the 201516 academic year.” Dr. Weatherman went on to say that growth will provide advantages in areas other than just increased participation in sports and larger numbers of student-athletes. “We are committed to growing the College for financial and academic reasons,” he stated. “A larger student body will help us strengthen our existing programs, as well as give us options for adding some new programs. In
that regard, the growth we will enjoy with football and wrestling [which will be added in 2014] should help make us a better institution.” In addition, Dr. Weatherman said Lyon College’s relationship with the local community will be strengthened. The additional students will help support the local economy, and college football fans will have local games to attend on Saturday afternoons in the fall.
Previous page: Coach Kirk Kelley at Batesville High School’s Pioneer Stadium, where the Scots will play their games Below: The 1951 Arkansas College football team, the last team ever to play for the College
“In the short time since we announced the reinstatement of the football program, I have heard nothing but positive comments about what we’re doing,” he stated. “It has given Lyon remarkable media coverage, which has translated into student inquiries we never would have received otherwise.” Despite the fact that Lyon College has not fielded a football squad since 1951, the College is deep in its tradition of the sport. Football was first organized at what was then Arkansas College in 1890, with the first official intercollegiate game being played on October 1, 1913. The sport was dropped in 1935 and later reinstated after World War II in 1947 and continued until the end of the 1951 season. When the Scots put on their pads in September of 2015, it will mark more than 23,300 days since their last action on the gridiron. Lyon College will also embark on a new day, not only from an athletic point of view, but for the College as a whole. Fall 2013

Putting theory into practice Senior Fred Kiffer is no stranger to hard work. A biology major, Kiffer has balanced countless campus organizations with a daunting academic calendar for the past three years. Kiffer even refused to take a break from his studies this summer, opting instead to conduct research on campus with Dr. Tim Lindblom. Kiffer has been researching a protein Lindblom discovered when pursuing his Ph.D. The protein is involved in a type of detoxification, which rids the body of toxins, in a small nematode called C. Elegans. C. Elegans is a model organism, its DNA being completely mapped. Kiffer said that studying a model organism allows researchers “access to a lot of other peers studying the same organisms,” giving them an array of perspectives to work from. Kiffer praised his experience in the lab, noting the importance of science students “putting all the theory they learn in class into practice.” He believes his research has transcended the classroom, leading to a large-scale discovery. Like many academic disciplines in a liberal arts curriculum, Kiffer’s work in the lab will impact “local communities and even humanity as a whole.” Explaining how two other proteins in the human body currently undergo the same detoxification as C. one’s field at all times. After all, as Kiffer explained, students become more appealing to graduate programs by furthering their knowledge outside of the classroom. Kiffer has achieved that goal this summer, bridging the gap between his liberal arts education and his specialization in biology. He believes this experience will help him pursue a number of careers in the field of biology. Kiffer hopes eventually to attend medical school, but he’s excited about pursuing biology in the meantime. He noted how research makes students “more competitive in the eyes of graduate schools,” especially coming in handy for medical school applicants.

out the way his research can lead to discoveries for those proteins, too. “Not only are we contributing to a better understanding of the C. Elegans, we might also be contributing to a better understanding of this detoxification in the human body,” Kiffer said. Even if Kiffer’s research leads to a dead end, he believes it will help other scientists and science students in research of C. Elegans. “We are helping build stepping stones that might be beneficial to people or animals – or plants for that matter. It’s important to be reminded that students can continue pursuing our fields of study down a path that will allow us to make bigger contributions to the world,” Kiffer said. While he is conducting research to broaden his knowledge of biology, Kiffer also noted how summer research will help him pursue work following graduation this coming spring. “Graduate schools in the field of biology look very highly on students who have research experience,” he said, pointing out the importance of being involved in
Lindblom described how Kiffer and Jonathan Wirges worked in the lab with him to “understand how cells respond to toxic compounds.” Lindblom echoed Kiffer’s sentiment about research leading to a career, saying, “Research experiences like this one and those that other students did off campus are critical to help further develop student interest in research as a career option.” “Perhaps more important,” he added, “is that this type of experience fits perfectly with the liberal arts tradition of learning to think critically and independently.” Lindblom isn’t the only professor who hosted student research this summer; Anna Mickler, Natalie McFarland, and Kayla Floyd also researched under Dr. Dave Thomas. The students investigated caves with Thomas, embracing one of the professor’s biggest passions. Like Kiffer and Wirges, Thomas’ students became involved with an ongoing project. All the students, along with students who have worked on the projects in the past, will be published when Thomas and Lindblom finish their research. Fall 2013

Expanding horizons Students and professors continue to gain new global perspectives through Lyon’s Nichols International Studies Program.
Dr. Scott Lien gazed up at the Blue Mosque dumbfounded, the grandeur and beauty of the sanctuary quickly washing over him. The stone pillars and domes, lit by hanging lights, shone almost ethereally. “I had not expected a visible, impossible-to-miss manifestation of an entire culture and its layers of historical moments, but that is what I got,” he explained. Lien, along with Dr. Gloria Everson, was leading a Nichols Trip to Turkey, a destination steeped in culture. But the trip taught the group much more than the culture of Turkey. Lien explained how the trip allowed students to learn culture, history, communication, and so-

cial responsibility. “While our trip was not explicitly about service or social responsibility, the experience did teach us the kind of respect for difference that must prefigure any commitment to social responsibility,” he said. Lien cited visits to the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the hidden caves of Cappadocia, as well as being immersed in Muslim culture, for developing a truly well-rounded experience. “We put our wits to use in very real-world, real-global settings,” he said, Kelsey McGuirk, class of 2013, agreed with Lien, calling the trip “educational” and “fast paced.” According to McGuirk, Turkey far exceeded her expectations. “I was expecting a place that was foreign and old-fashioned,”
she explained, “but in reality, it is a very modern culture with most of the residents speaking multiple languages including English.”

// LIBERAL ARTS IN ACTION The teenagers hope to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, being involved in both academia and the Batesville community through UBMS. This isn’t the first time UBMS participants have served the community. In past years, UBMS has raised money for Batesville Family Violence Prevention, Wood-Lawn Nursing Home, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Elaine Severs, director of UBMS, believes these projects teach students leadership outside the classroom. “We provide leadership development opportunities for students to help them strengthen the skills they will need to become leaders in their school and communities,” Severs explained. Severs noted how the many UBMS activities, such as trips and special speakers, reflect liberal arts. UBMS does primarily focus on math and science, but the program shows students how to apply these subjects to the world around them. “We help them learn about careers that may provide opportunities to make a positive impact,” Severs said, noting how community service is a way to relate the classroom to the world.

Making a difference in the community through faith
Dr. Paul Bube, W. Lewis McColgan Professor of Religion, knows quite a bit about faith.
For Dr. Oliveira, Habitat allows her to exercise the “moral obligation to help those in need.” Oliveira has been volunteering since her teenage years, having seen severe poverty growing up in Brazil. “If we want to live in a better world,” Oliveira said, “we have to contribute what we can to achieve that.”
Having taught religion courses at Lyon for 12 years, Bube realizes the importance of applying faith outside the classroom. This summer, he exercised this concept through Habitat for Humanity. Bube, along with fellow professors Barry Gehm, Terrell Tebbetts, and Cassia Oliveira, worked on Batesville resident Andrew Richardson’s house. Bube said the project hit home with Richardson, who is strongly devoted to his faith.
Bube founded Lyon’s Habitat for Humanity chapter years ago through the Wesley Fellowship. “It was faith that motivated us from the beginning,” he said, describing how Wesley Fellowship members felt compelled to do “something more meaningful that could make a difference in the lives of others.”
“Andrew has been an amazing partner in building his home,” Bube said, noting how the preacher has worked three times the hours expected of a Habitat family. “He has been working in his church, teaching, and preaching for several years, so for him, the building of his home is fundamentally an expression of his faith.”
Above: Bube in front of one of the Habitat for Humanity homes he and other Lyon professors have worked on.
Habitat for Humanity does allow Bube to exercise his faith practically, but he quickly pointed out how “faith is fundamentally a practical thing.” “Loving our neighbor as ourselves certainly includes helping each person build and purchase an affordable, decent home,” he said. “To paraphrase the Letter of James in the New Testament, ‘faith not lived out in a practical way is not really faith at all.’” Fall 2013

Exploring urban poverty Lyon professors often work off the clock, discovering new ways to integrate academia with community service projects. Through their work with Transformacion Urbana Internacional (TUI), Dr. Scott Roulier and Dr. Patrick Mulick have taken this idea to a whole new level. Transformacion Urbana Internacional, a Chimalhuacán-based organization, aims to address urban poverty in a multifaceted, holistic way. In the past, TUI has established or organized business ventures, micro financing, urban reforestry, leadership training, and youth centers. Roulier brought TUI’s ProSalud project to Mulick in 2010. Roulier had been searching for a project for some time, finding himself “somewhat disconnected from the real world” in academia. The holistic aspect of the project appealed to him, allowing him to apply academic socioeconomic research to a very real world problem. Mulick, too, found the project to be “the perfect blend of science and social sciences.” ProSalud addresses many problems, helping to prevent common diseases, reduce health care costs, and increase civic participation in developing healthier lifestyles. Mulick explained how he and Roulier, along with three students, researched the Chimalhuacán community to help TUI better understand the health and civic needs of the community. After developing a survey to explore the effectiveness of ProSalud’s programs in the summer of 2010, Dr. Roulier and three students fluent in Spanish began interviewing members of the Chimalhuacán community in Mexico. According to Mulick, the research provided “specific information on the needs and conditions of the people of 20

Piper
Chimalhuacán” to assess the effectiveness of TUI. The results showed that many residents of the community struggle with sadness and depression, often living without access to nutritious food, proper medical care, or exercise. After the first visit to Chimalhuacán, Roulier began truly to understand the purpose of TUI. “I had no idea of the demographic changes in the world,” he said. “There is a connection between how we live and our impact on the natural environment.” Roulier returned to Mexico in 2012 to continue the group’s research, traveling to Los Reyes this time. Here, the group collected data with a revised survey. According to Mulick, the goal of this study is to help TUI assess and use its resources more wisely. He noted how the study has already helped with successful grant applications, a very important part of research. Still, Mulick insisted that the group’s work in Mexico is nothing compared to the work TUI does onsite. “We are not the ones living with our families in a slum community—a radical commitment by TUI staff,” he said, “but we can certainly come alongside people doing noble
work and use our humble gifts to make their efforts more fruitful.” He also pointed out that the project reflects the liberal arts curriculum, describing the “interdisciplinary nature” of the study. The students, all fluent in Spanish, used their diverse academic backgrounds to assess the Chimalhuacán community. One student, Jessica Enderlin, has been profoundly affected by the work. Fascinated by statistics, Enderlin enjoyed conducting interviews and evaluating data—but she enjoyed helping the community even more.
“I’m a biology major, leaning towards medicine or public health for my future job,” she explained. “As a doctor, I would like to help people like I’m helping by evaluating health and community in Los Reyes.”

She called the project “amazing,” adding how it “could really benefit impoverished people across the globe.” Fall 2013

Alum Spotlight: Don Hurley, Class of ’77 Dr. Don Hurley, class of ’77, doesn’t know what it means to retire. Currently “semi-retired,” Hurley is still teaching, working as a practicing physician, and running his non-profit organization, called “Live Well.”
Above left: Hurley, the Student Government President, escorts Homecoming Queen Lisa Carr during Homecoming ’77. Above right: Hurley today
Of course, Hurley has never really slowed down. Immediately after graduating from Lyon, he enlisted in the Navy, originally commissioned as a Line Officer. Once in the Pacific, he was selected to be the Shore Patrol Officer for the Pacific Fleet in Hong Kong. Hurley calls his experiences and skills learned in class with Dr. Dan West the “key” to his success in maintaining the peace as an officer. In 1981, the Navy sent Hurley to medical school. Hurley became the Medical Officer for the NATO Baltic Fleet and the South

Atlantic Fleet soon after receiving his medical degree, traveling for political reasons often. “During my tax-payer funded travel, I frequently had to defend my Ozark Mountains liberal arts education to Ivy League graduates,” he said. “Dr. Terrell Tebbetts’ classes in English Literature came in handy. When challenged to discuss any work of art or literature, I used the same phrases that mollified him in discussing Shakespeare or Blake.” Hurley currently practices and teaches in South Carolina.
Class Notes To submit a class note for the next edition of the Piper, please e-mail alumni@lyon.edu. We love to hear what our alumni are up to, and so do your classmates! Carl Garner, ’38, celebrated his 98th birthday June 1 with a cake featuring a photo of his Arkansas College basketball team. Happy birthday, Carl! Charles F. Allen, ’61, was recently reappointed to the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board (AHECB) by Gov. Mike Beebe. Allen currently serves as Chairman of the AHECB. Arkansas Court of Appeals Judge Bill H. Walmsley, ’63, of Batesville administered the oath of office. Allen is Chief Administrative Officer for the Arkansas Correctional School System. He and his wife, Anne Hart Allen, live in Little Rock. Charlene Barlos, ’63, writes, “After graduating from Lyon in 1963, my first teaching job was at the high school of Farmington, Missouri. I taught there three wonderful years before moving on. Thanks to Facebook, I have managed to reunite with some of those students. Likewise, I would enjoy hearing from my college classmates who are also on Facebook.” Patsy Magouyrk Wilson, ’63, writes, “After working 31 years for the Batesville Public Schools as a library media specialist, I have retired to spend time with my children, Kris (’90), Jeff (’93), and Mary Beth (’94) (all Lyon College alumni) and their families.” Larry Gerber, ’66, writes, “On July 19, Jane and I became the proud grandparents of Soleia Rae Perrin, our eleventh grandchild.” Mary Ann Bassham, ’67, writes “I retired May 31, 2011!” Mary Henry, ’68, writes, “Just checking in. After Rock & Roll for 35 years plus, I’m spending most of my time back here in Batesville helping out Mom and Dad.”
Mitch Galiyas, ’72, is retiring as athletic director from Montour High School (Pittsburgh) after 38 years with the district. He was previously a history teacher, football coach, and volleyball coach. David Magouyrk, ’74, writes, “After thirty-seven years at the Batesville plant site for Eastman KODAK, Eastman Chemical Company, and FutureFuel Chemical Company, I have retired. Linda and I have relocated to Northwest Arkansas to be closer to Heather (’98) and her family. We are certainly enjoying the time spent with the grandchildren.” Michael Springer, ’74, writes, “I am proud of Arkansas College (Lyon College). This institution gave many a young person an excellent start in life. I am retiring from public school service after 38 years in Texas. Lyon College cared about people receiving an ethical outlook on our contribution in society. I take more pride in my experience with Old A.C. than five teaching certificates and three master’s degrees. People like Dr. Tebbetts and Coach Wann gave us a third and fourth chance to be a big frog in a little pond. I believe this tadpole had more than four opportunities due to the guidance of our facility in the early seventies. I am very grateful for their guidance and supervision. This educational atmosphere has given me the leadership abilities to be part of the American Red Cross (Texoma Chapter) and serve on our County Appraisal Review Board. Upon school retirement, I will honorably continue to serve North Texas (Grayson County) and am grateful for the opportunities that Old A.C. has given me.” Tracy Seffers, ’87, writes, “I recently completed the 2012-13 HERS Institute for women in higher education leadership, held at Wellesley College. I’m also the site coordinator for a recently-launched chapter Fall 2013

I’ve also just recently found out that I’ve been selected to attend the 36th annual Appalachian Writers’ Workshop at the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky, this summer. My work will focus on poetry and memoir during this week-long workshop. Whew! A busy year, and it’s not over yet! Hope all is well “at home.” Trish Hastings Turnbough, ’87, has received the James H. Atkinson Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Arkansas History. Turnbough, a teacher at Cave City for 26 years, received the award during the Arkansas Historical Association Conference in West Helena. He was nominated by his departmental chair in recognition of his “outstanding contributions in support of the new Molecules to Military Medicine School of Medicine curriculum.” Cheryl Matthews, ’93, writes, “Retirement life is great. I retired from Conagra in 1997, and Jeral retired in 2009. Only one daughter of three daughters lives in Arkansas, so we moved back to Cave City to be near the Arkansas daughter. Oldest daughter lives in St. Augustine, Florida, and middle daughter lives in Chattanooga. We are busy traveling!” John Hornor Jacobs, ’94, of Little Rock has signed a six-figure publishing deal with Gollancz, a British publisher in the fantasy, science fiction, and young adult 26

My photograph entitled “Woodwork in Winter” was one of 20 pieces selected to be displayed at the event that featured local artists and their vision of soccer. I was extremely proud to be selected for this event in which local artists and Chicago Fire players met with gallery patrons for a night in which all proceeds went to charity.” Deborah Carter Phillips, ’95, writes, “I got married on April 6, 2013, to Gary Phillips. We took a honeymoon cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Seas from Miami to Nassau and CocoCay Bahamas and Key West, Florida. I have two grown children, two young grandchildren, and now two young step-daughters. We live in Cottontown, Tennessee. Matt Taylor, ’99, writes, “In 2010 I went back to school and got my EMT certification and began taking pre-requisite classes for paramedic school and began testing at all the NWA fire departments. Bentonville hired me February 2011 as a part-time; they sent me through the fire academy rookie school, then hired me full-time August 2011. I’ve been a firefighter/EMT ever since, and I love it.” Terrell King, ’00, writes, “After 13 wonderful years, I am leaving the students, parents, faculty, and staff of the Bastrop Independent School District and beginning my new job of Director of Elementary Staffing for the Round Rock Independent School District. In my new position, I will be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, staffing, and human resource issues for the 33 elementary schools in Round Rock ISD. It is a very difficult decision to leave; however, this move allows me to continue on the path of achieving my career goal of becoming a superintendent one day.” Josh Baugh, ’01, and his colleague Brian Chasnoff were jointly awarded the Enterprise Journalist of the Year award for 2012 by the San Antonio Express-News for their coverage of ethics scandals at City Hall, initially about the largest construction contract in city history. Many external funding agencies interpret this Alumni Participation Rate (APR) as a tangible measure of alumni satisfaction. In other words, every donor, not just every dollar, counts! For example, your contribution will help raise Lyon’s APR, which in turn may convince a foundation that Lyon is worthy of its support also; your $10 now may be just the vote of confidence needed to secure a multi-million dollar request from a foundation in the near future. Consistent annual giving, even if it is $10 each year, helps your Alma Mater by demonstrating to other potential funders that you care about her future. For more information about how you can strengthen Lyon’s reputation by showing your financial support, please contact Gina Garrett, Executive Director of Advancement, at (870) 307-7557. 1935 Mr. Larry Sloan 1938 Dr. Carl Garner Dr. Charles Taylor 1942 Mrs. Marie (Carpenter) Erwin Mrs. Charlotte (Agee) Ray Mr. G.
