Controlled Assessment Task Holiday Needs Task 9

Nathan Danby Bradford Grammar School

It’s becoming more and more common for people, especially the older generation to socialise outside in the evenings but it’s not as pleasant when the days get shorter and the evenings get darker, it would be useful to have some form of lighting product that will provide a light source while creating a relaxing atmosphere rather then simply flooding the garden with a bright light. The garden can be a haven for chilling out and with a light source for when it gets dark those relaxing evenings could last even longer. The problem is, when it gets to the evening and its getting darker there isn’t a good enough light sources in the back garden to create an area to socialise in.

These pictures also show a typical garden area that my light will be situated in.

This is an example of outdoor path lighting. This light source could well be LED as it is unlikely to be a halogen light source because the enclosed heat would melt the product. The lights are an efficient way of lighting a pathway without flooding the garden with light.

GARDEN ENVIRONMENT The garden consists of many different surfaces. ith W paved and grass surfaces common in many gardens. In my clients garden there are various areas included many flower beds and a number of trees. here T is also a paved area with table and chairs which is an area often used to socialise however the plants and wildlife are also a focal point of the garden and are not always easily viewable when the light is poor in the evenings.

TARGET MARKET T target market for my project will be a he more adult market that enjoys relaxing in the garden in the evening and I will refer to my parents as a resource for additional research as they are included within this target market. The light source should be located in an area of the garden that will enhance the This is a plan of the area of a typical atmosphere while also adding to a relaxed garden that my light will be situated mood/environment. in. I will design my light to fit in its surroundings.

Lawn

The Red Block indicated possible places where my light could be positioned. There are two different surfaces to choose from, hard paving and the lawn. Where I decide to put my light will have a large influence on the design and also on the power source that I choose.

CLIENTS TASE My clients are very much interested in the environment and various aspects of nature. hey T like natural finishes such as wood but also like modern designs and anything that will bring excitement to the garden while creating a relaxing atmosphere.

Gavel

Design a light form for the garden that provides a light source while creating a relaxed atmosphere in the garden for socialising.

-List my target market. This will be the older generation, who like to relax outside in the evenings after a hard days work.

-I will need to visit stores to look at existing outdoor lighting or at least research existing products on the internet to gain ideas.

-Conduct a Questionnaire to find out what people’s preferences are and what people like.

Take measurements of garden area to get rough size of product in relation to the garden size and the area its lighting

- Analyse the results and draw conclusions which I will present in a graphical form

Places

People

This is an Art Nouveau style light. It’s a decorative style from the 1880’s to 1900’s characterized by stylized plant and animal motifs and sinuous, curling patterns. Its organic style fits the art nouveau style. This example is a wall light and would be fastened to a wall or a post.

Processes -Different materials I will investigate, what’s the best material to use taking into account the product is outside and also what the target market prefers. -Look at adjustability of the product and analyse by dissembling some products and studying there manufacturing processes. This will enable me to understand how and why products have been manufactured this way. -Quantity of the product, will it be a batch or a one off?

This is an example of a very Art Deco style light. A post-World-War-I decorative art. Characterized by strong, bright colours and geometric shapes and patterns

Products -Look at existing products and take idea from other designs on the market. Which work best? Which products aren’t so good? -Looking at designer’s work that may influence my design. different shapes, art forms and styles. E.G Art deco, Art Nouveau Modern, Cubist -Criteria- The best type of lighting to use. What the brightest? Most effective? And also best power source Battery power, solar, mains.

I am analysing a product similar to the type of lighting I am looking at designing. his T will give me some idea in to the the way the products can be used and manufactured.

Function

Materials

T material used in this example for the he over all structure is stainless steel. They have chosen stainless steel for this design because it provides a strong structure and is waterproof meaning it’s very durable to the outdoors and it will last along time. The same material is used throughout each part of the structure to keep the design simple. If materials where changed for parts of the structure it would give the product a very un-uniform look.

Manufacturing P rocess

T his outdoor standing light will have been made in separate parts. The base as one, the stand as the second and then the light fittings at the top will have all been made separately before been fastened together. This product would have been incredibly hard to make as just one piece. The bulb itself would be manufactured separately all together. This light will also have been designed so that the bulb can be changed to one that’s energy saving by installing an equivalent energy saving lamp instead of an incandescent.

Ergonomics

The product has been designed safely with a strong structure that would be fastened to the ground and no sharp edges that would create any risk of being harmful. The product would be very difficult to transport as it is heavy and large and a peculiar shape to carry.

The function of this light would be simply to light up an area outside when it is dark. So that this area can be used whenever, regardless to how much natural This is an light there is present. The large bulbs creating the example of an light source face towards the ground to aim the outdoor standing light source downwards thus lighting up a light that I significant area. am using to The target market for a product such do an analysis on as this would be for people with modern taste as part of my because stainless steel is quite a modern finish; re-search. however the overall design is still quite contemporary so the design could appeal to a larger market. The light can be maintained very easily because the stainless steel structure will last along time. The only thing to take into account is that the bulb will need replacing after a while. The style of this light is very simplistic. Using a smooth finish and simple colouring. The top of the structure has a slight art nouveau feel to it with smooth curves but overall I think the design has tried to keep a very simplistic feel. This is overall a very solid product and I hope to design something just as good. It is strong and durable outdoors creates a good light source and is very aesthetically pleasing. The only thing I would look at changing is the fact that this product is difficult to transport if you where wanting to change its position in the garden. However this is not the most important factor to look at and the overall design is very good. With my design I will also look moor at creating a good atmosphere in the garden, looking at mood lighting and other aspects, not just lighting the garden up.

Target Market

My target market is going to be aimed at young adults and above, people who are in work or have retired and are more likely to enjoy late evenings relaxing outdoors after a hard days work and enjoy entertaining in the garden.

Function

T main function of my product is to create a good atmosphere in the he garden and set the mood when it turns dark, while also giving of some light to the area.

Size

T light should be compact, however at the opposite end of the spectrum he it needs to be big enough to create an impact. and set the mood.

Durability

It is important that the product is waterproof and durable in all weather conditions. he T products structure should be long lasting and not need replacing. The bulb in the light will need to be changed so it will need to be easily accessible. If batteries are used in the powering of my light then they will need replacing.

Aesthetics

I would like my design to have a modern & simplistic aspect. I will also take influences from natural shapes and forms. I would like the colours of the design to reflect the mood in the garden and keep the finish smooth. ll A also keep patterns minimalist to keep the simplistic design and also keep maintenance simple.

Materials

T materials used will need to be durable enough to cope outside and he also be weatherproof. The material needs to be long lasting and low maintenance and not distort when wet. Low maintenance and a good finish is also important.

Weight

T weight of the product should be taken into consideration as I he want it to be light enough to be easily transported around the garden but it also needs to be heavy enough to stand stable in difficult weather conditions.

Safety

T product is outdoors therefore it needs to be low voltage. The he highest voltage I can use is 12V although battery power or even solar panel are another option depending on the light intensity required.

Green Issues

This is something that the product can include. The use of energy saving bulbs, and possibly even use of solar panels to save energy. Other issues such as light pollution can be solved by only having light turned on when in use, as opposed to coming on when it is dark.

Manufacture

T manufacturing of the product needs to be kept quite he simple. Although this is a one of product I will look at how I could batch produce it and the different techniques that could be used and how it would need to modified

Packaging

I will need to keep the packaging minimal, for practical reasons and also to reduce the waste. Try to make the packaging reusable or recyclable for environmental reasons.

Industrial Process

I will consider how the product could be made industry. Using batch techniques. This will be reviewed after the final product has been made.

Cost

T cost of the product is not vital, however it dose not one to be he hugely expensive.

Moderator’s comments Investigating the design context 4 marks The student has a clear view of the potential target market and has based decisions largely upon a sample client. • Initial research is superficial although there is a good deal of clear analysis taking place. Design criteria established but is not comprehensive. Development of design proposals 17 marks A range of alternative ideas explored at a superficial level, many being near copies of existing lamps. There is • no clear design strategy and the student has not attempted to use any design stimulus other than the moodboard to generate innovative or creative ideas. Wider issues have been superficially considered. Simple card modelling and 3D clay modelling has taken place. Research into electrical components and materials has allowed the student to make suitable choices. The design proposal has developed well although the final (and abruptly modified) design proposal does not offer enough information for third party manufacture to take place. There is neither a product or manufacturing specification although basic drawings and flow charts provide some specific information which has been credited. Making 32 marks The student has worked independently and the project includes a great deal of demand. Quality accuracy and • finish are all strong and the product is commercially viable. The student has not evidenced the manufacturing processes well and several significant details are very poorly communicated. It is unclear what processes have been used during some of the manufacturing stages. Testing and Evaluation 4 marks Minimal testing was carried out throughout the process although the final evaluation report does make some • suggestions for minor changes if commercially produced. The student has evaluated against the design criteria and used some third party opinions. Communication 4 marks A presentation of a paper folder designing approach which has been clearly and reasonably concisely • communicated as an e-submission in PowerPoint. The student demonstrates a broad range of drawing and modelling skills and uses a clear and generally accurate technical vocabulary. More slides than recommended
