FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SMALLab Experience Opens at the Glazer Children’s Museum First of Its Kind in a United States Children’s Museum
(Tampa, FL.) The Glazer Children’s Museum is merging innovation and education with the opening of their brand new, interactive experience, SMALLab. SMALLab, which stands for Situated Multimedia Arts Learning Lab, will premiere to the public on Sunday, April 3 and is the first of its kind in a U.S. children’s museum. SMALLab is an embodied learning environment where every learner is up, moving, and collaborating with peers. During each SMALLab experience, museum guests can work together to solve puzzles, create stories and character plots, learn about the world, and paint digital masterpieces. “To be the first Children’s Museum in the nation to pioneer this technology means that our region gets the best educational tools for kids today so they can be prepared as critical thinkers for tomorrow. “says, Jennifer Stancil, President and CEO of the Museum. Patrons will be able to participate and interact with the newest experience, every Saturday and Sunday free with museum admission at posted times. “Installing our new SMALLab is a dream realized. I’ve been watching the trajectory of SMALLab since its early days at Arizona State University as “gaming” as a way to educate began to gain momentum. Bringing this innovation to Tampa to improve learning outcomes in a diverse range of subjects is just the beginning of a long string of new experiences we’re excited to lead.,” Stancil continued. In addition, SMALLab will be available as a field trip enhancement during the summer months and upcoming school year for all group field trips. The pricing of $9.50 per student covers all field trip costs and includes SMALLab learning module teaching topics as diverse as literacy, physics, fractions and more. The SMALLab experience accommodates a maximum of 26 students and 3 chaperones. Each educational scenario is 45 minutes in length and includes a SMALLab Educator to facilitate. Available
scenarios, field trip details, and descriptions can be found at GlazerSMALLab.org. Registration is currently open for these programs. This innovative, motion-capture technology is proven to increase student learning by 86%, and yield a 7x increase in student-centered discussions. Educators can watch as their students become the fraction, letter, molecule, paintbrush, or playing piece in hundreds of educational activities, all aligning with Pre K-12 STEAM curriculum and Common Core standards. To learn more about SMALLab visit GlazerSMALLab.org or to view pictures and video demos check out the GCM Press Kit.
About The Glazer Children’s Museum Named one of the top five Children’s Museums in America, Glazer Children’s Museum is an innovative educational and culture resource for the Tampa region. Opened in Downtown Tampa in 2010, the Museum sits among skyscrapers as well as green space, and is a central part of the cultural corridor featuring other museums, libraries and a performing arts center. The mission of Glazer Children’s Museum is to create learning environments where children play, discover and connect to the world around them in order to develop as lifelong learners and leaders. The hands-on, minds-on Museum attracts more than 210,000 visitors annually with a 53,000 sq ft building full of themed galleries and 170 interactive exhibits for children aged birth to ten. A combination of permanent and traveling exhibits, comprehensive year-round educational programs, and dynamic special events provide children, parents, caregivers, and teachers a rich, cutting edge, ever-changing environment for playful learning. Glazer Children’s Museum, a 501c3 non-profit, also offers over 5,000 sq ft of event space, 2,500 sq ft of classroom space and a 1,000 sq ft roof top terrace overlooking the picturesque Downtown Riverwalk, along the Hillsborough River.
About SMALLab Learning SMALLab Learning was founded in 2010 with the mission of advancing embodied learning in schools and museums. Our flagship product is SMALLab, the Situated Multimedia Arts Learning Lab. SMALLab was created by an interdisciplinary team of researchers and media experts at Arizona State University, led by Dr. David Birchfield. Numerous agencies supported the core research including the National Science Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, Intel Research, the Kauffman Foundation, and private donors. In 2010, ASU helped to create a new spin-off company, SMALLab Learning, LLC, founded by Drs. David Birchfield and Mina Johnson-Glenberg. ###

tOp pICKS from GCM As the Fall months brisk in and the holidays commence, we want to make sure your children take on Fall and Winter Break with the best learning tools in hand — digital or analog. GCM experts and CommonSenseMedia.org recommend the following books, apps, and games so your family can stay cool and in the know!
1
promote HealtHy liviNg A BOOK FOR AGES 6+
Children come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to reiterate that message through reading. GCM recommends Ivy + Bean, an awardwinning book about making a new friend, learning about differences, and sharing an adventure. With its oversize print, black-and-white illustrations, and easy-to-follow plot, this first book in a consistently funny series is a great starter chapter book for emerging readers.
2 SCieNCe-Fair experimeNtS AN APP FOR AGES 4+
The young learner app, Sid’s Science Fair, brings your kindergartener into a science-tastic world filled with new educational concepts, vocabulary words, and fun activities. Children are invited to explore Sid’s colorful exhibits while learning mathematical and scientific concepts on an introductory level. Watch as they integrate the words they have learned into every day scenarios. Being exposed to these concepts at such an early age will make complex concepts easier to grasp as your little one gets older.
3 Make Your OWN Movie AN APP FOR AGES 4+
As the holiday season quickly approaches, here’s the perfect app for your little ones to capture every moment. The Curious About Me App allows children to create movies while talking about their own experiences and learning the key components to a hit story. Download and give your child a taste of movie magic today!
4
Get ready For geek Week A GAME FOR AGES 7+
Download the Coda Game as it’s designed to teach coding to kids. Its unlimited creativity is designed to help kids understand basic coding as well as how video games work. Kids can design two types of games and then share them to the cloud under a username selected from silly options. If they know a friend’s username, they can search specifically for those games, download them, and play them. Coda Game ‘cutesy game-design empowers young visual coders and preps them for GCM’s Geek Week!
