MIXED-CLASS CO-LIVING Using social interaction as a design tool to combat socioeconomic segregation

PROBLEM Socioeconomic segregation of residential neighborhoods is increasing in 27 of the nation’s 30 largest cities due to institutional disparities rooted in racial and income segregation. These institutional woes have triggered social disparities and caused social distress and negative stigma among adjacent neighborhoods that differ radically in terms of socioeconomics. Housing projects of the past have attempted to mend socioeconomic segregation through mixed-income. In many of these cases, the operation, management, and tenant procurement of the housing projects are addressed to include a wide range of incomes, but do not address the architecture or the spatial dynamics of social interaction among residents; this left little validity to the many presumed social benefits (role-modeling, social capital) of income mixing.

PROPOSAL (THESIS) This thesis seeks to propose a new way of developing housing which addresses socioeconomic segregation in its two dimensions: Community Planning to address the Institutional Dimension, and Architecture to address the Social Dimension Community Planning: proposal includes a socioeconomic (class-based) mixture of residents - based on income, education, and occupation - to be applied to a newly constructed housing development. Architecture: Presuming that the socioeconomic mix can be achieved, manipulation of the built environment can be explored to promote social interaction among the development’s diverse residents.

OUTCOME This project explores social programmatic strategies from precedents that may be applied to housing systems in order to create social interaction across many class levels at the residential scale. The thesis makes an argument to use this as a tool to combat the real-world problem of socioeconomic segregation. A mixed-class development is intended to combat socioeconomic segregation at the neighborhood scale; the architectural strategies explored in this project will seek promote a new level of engagement among its residents at the building scale.
