Su alerón trasero de baja resistencia mantiene su velocidad máxima en las rectas, pero la aerodinámica de su automóvil garantiza que no pierda nada en las curvas. Hamilton insistió en que si quieren permanecer en la pelea, Mercedes debe ajustar sus prioridades. “Necesitamos una mejora de algún tipo. The Dutchman led every lap at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg to take the checkered flag 35 seconds clear of Hamilton’s Mercedes, after he stop for fresh tires with two laps to go. Hamilton kept Verstappen honest but never threatened to challenge as the Red Bull driver secured his second win in a week and fourth of the year, increasing his title advantage from 12 points to 18 with Hamilton securing a bonus point for the fastest lap. Red Bull have now been on top at the low-speed circuits and proved their car on two high-speed tracks in succession. Their low-drag rear wing is maintaining their top speed on the straight but their car’s aero is ensuring it loses nothing in the corners.

Hamilton insisted that if he is to stay in the fight Mercedes had to adjust their priorities. “We need an upgrade of some sort,” he said. “We are not sure if it’s the rear wing or the engine, but we need to find some performance from somewhere.” Verstappen in contrast confirmed Red Bull are still fiercely developing their car, noting they were bringing improvements every race and that they would continue to do so. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas took third, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, with Lando Norris fifth for McLaren.

In what is no longer a trend and now a bona fide run of dominance, Verstappen scored his first career Formula 1 Grand Slam at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, on Sunday. He started on the pole, led every lap, and scored the fastest lap of the race in winning the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix. The win capped a tripleheader sweep for Verstappen, who left the at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg with a 32-point lead—a cushion of more than one full race—over Hamilton in the championship with nine of 23 races in the books. The win before 132,000 fans was the fifth of the season for Verstappen and fifth in a row for Red Bull over the black-liveried Mercedes cars. It was a capacity crowd that included Verstappen fans dressed in orange and many firing off orange smoke bombs throughout the race to celebrate their driver. Last week’s race in Austria was in front of limited attendance due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Newgarden had led the most laps in the previous two IndyCar encounters at Detroit and Road America but flagging tires and mechanical issues contrived to deny him victories in either event. But with pole, Newgarden was able to keep ahead of fellow frontrow starter Colton Herta in the early stages, eventually building a three-second lead prior to the first round of pitstops. Within the final 15 laps, Ericsson began to catch Newgarden, breaching the five second barrier and continuing to eat into the Penske driver’s lead. With the laps continuing to tick down, Ericsson put Newgarden under immense pressure, getting to within a second as the two-time champion began to struggle on the exit of Turn 9. On the final lap, with Ericsson bearing down on him, Newgarden kept it clean and sank his push-to-pass into his defense of the lead – and Ericsson instead got a little untidy into the ninth corner on the last visit to allow Newgarden to finally end his recent hoodoo.
