More than 400 Philippine activists are currently in prison. Threatened and arrested because they defend their rights. 126 activists were assassinated in 2017. Our local partners continue the struggle, but risk their lives every day. In Belgium, we show our solidarity: we conduct campaigns to strengthen the voice of human rights activists and publish open letters in La Libre Belgique, De Standaard and De Wereld Morgen.
Social movements continue the struggle despite 100 years of colonisation and 50 years of occupation of the Palestinian territories. Not only in Palestine, but in Belgium as well. Activists have gathered 3,000 signatures to stop the collaboration between KU Leuven and the Israeli police. Result: in October, the university decided not to continue the collaboration and drew up a human rights charter to assess future collaborations.

At the end of 2017, the government decides to cancel the cuts.

Inhabitants of La Vigia in western Cuba drew up a development plan in 2016 using the participatory “green mapping” method. Thanks to TWHA’s and Cubanismo.be’s Easter Campaign, they can now put their ideas into practice. Women receive training on preserving fruit and vegetables. These products provide them with extra income. A new well is built and the inhabitants share ideas on recycling and waste management with a project group from Havana.
Palestine From 1 to 24 youth m ov e m e n t s
More and more young Palestinians are acquiring knowledge and have the courage to take a stand for the right to healthcare. In 2017, we went from one collaboration with a youth organisation to a network of 24 movements active in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem. The young people receive training and meet every month to share their results and their challenges. We manage to reach out to 150 youth leaders who pass on what they’ve learned to the members of their movements. Concrete victories reinforce their struggle. They set up a mobile clinic in the village of Al Hafasi. This allows them to provide healthcare for its 156 inhabitants.

147 “gender villages” between Kinshasa and Goma Our Congolese partner, Etoile Du Sud, sets up a safe place in its “gender villages” for more equality between men and women. What began as an innovative idea in a neighbourhood of Kinshasa was copied in 147 neighbourhoods and villages all over Congo. A “gender village” isn’t a physical place, but a group of men and women who deal with problems together and come up with solutions. In the “gender village” in eastern Congo, Etoile du Sud organises training sessions to raise awareness about sexual violence and child soldiers. They provide support for the psychological well-being of the families concerned.

is a Belgian NGO that originated from the conviction that every indivi- dual has a right to health. This is why we support the expansion of social movements in the South fighting for the right to health. In the Philippines, Palestine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cuba and elsewhere, we provide our partners with advice and support, helping them build strong organizations. We also support them financially through the funds and donations we raise in Belgium. Furthermore, we back their political battles through our activities in Belgium and our international networking activities such as with the worldwide People’s Health Movement.
