The Original Vandellas – Biography
Annette Beard-Helton and Rosalind AshfordHolmes believe they were brought together in 1957 solely for harmonizing together. In 1957, they formed the Del-Phis along with Martha Reeves and then member Gloria Williamson. They eventually moved over to join Motown Record Company and changed their name to the Vandellas. When Gloria Williamson left the group, Martha Reeves took over as the lead singer for the group. Singing background vocals for Marvin Gaye, the group can be heard on his smash hits "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow," "Hitch Hike," and "Pride And Joy".
Over a period of time Martha & The Vandellas garnered 26 charting Top 100 songs in both the R&B and Pop Charts. Most famous of the recordings are “Love is Like A Heat Wave”, “Dancing In The Street”, No Where To Run”, ”Nowhere To Hide”, “Jimmy Mack”, “My Baby Loves Me”, “I’m Ready For Love”, “Come And Get These Memories”, “Quicksand” and many more. For 50 years the two have been together as siblings are in a family. With the departure of Martha Reeves as the lead vocalist of the trio, the search was on to find a matching voice to complement the background ensemble they have mastered. Along came Roschelle Laughhunn from the Detroit metro area. In the 21st century, the Original Vandellas have become one of the most significant and prolific girl groups of all times.
