Following our family pantomime, our Spring programme starts in the New Year. We’ll be showcasing emerging musical talent and sharp-witted comedy in our studio theatre which can also magically transform into our own 100 seat filmhouse. Elkie Brooks returns to The Gaiety in January. Ayr’s views will have a chance to be heard nationwide on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions?’ with Jonathan Dimbleby, broadcast live in March. And in May, we’ll host the launch of the National Theatre of Scotland’s latest touring production ‘Calum’s Road’.

After almost four years of hard work, fundraising, lobbying and refurbishing, The Gaiety reopens its doors and raises the curtain on December 11th, 2012. When the theatre closed, it was much loved, but in decline. Simply rolling back the clock was not going to be the answer. Instead we have a new vision to redevelop The Gaiety as a centre for theatre and the arts – providing a destination venue and much more. New facilities including a studio theatre and an expanded café/bar/ restaurant are part of our re-imagined centre for cultural life in Ayr.

Tonight, tomorrow, next week... Beyond our programme, we aim to offer something for the whole community. The new ‘Stage Door’ café/bar/restaurant will be open seven days a week, offering a meeting place and anything from a coffee or breakfast to a full evening meal. We’ll have youth theatre activities from the start along with other themed events. And we are developing plans to take The Gaiety into the community, with opportunities for involvement in all sorts of ways. Our partnership with the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) will create an innovative ‘learning theatre’ connecting Ayr’s growing student population with the life of the town in a centre for education, training and research.

Parking: Pay & Display public car parks surround the theatre. Disabled parking spaces are located in the car park in front of the theatre. The theatre does not operate these car parks – please read posted signs carefully. Street parking is also available on various streets nearby but please check restrictions and charges applicable.

P

Disabled Access: Ramped access is located at the Stage Door Café entrance at the front of the theatre. l The lift is located in the foyer on the ground floor with access to the Studio on the first floor. l The adapted toilet is located on the Ground Floor. l Wheelchair spaces for registered disabled and companion can be booked through the Ticket Desk. l A Hearing Induction Loop system is available in the Main House Theatre. l Guide dogs are welcome.

l Designed by local architect J.McHardy Young, The Gaiety Theatre first opened on 1st October 1902. The original interior had two tiers, could accommodate 1,200 and cost £9,500. Less than a year later the theatre was devastated by fire – and met the same fate in 1955. On both occasions rebuilding meant The Gaiety rose from the ashes, although each time in a changed layout. l For nearly half its lifetime, from 192573, the theatre was run by the Popplewell Family who built up much of the affection The Gaiety still retains today. In later years, while owned and run by South Ayrshire Council, it remained the premier theatre in South West Scotland. As the largest performing venue between Glasgow and England, it saw annual audiences of over 80,000 for more than 220 shows each year. Over its long life the stage has seen performances from comedians, singers, variety acts and icons such as Sir Harry Lauder, Ken Dodd, Dave Willis, Jack Milroy and Gaiety legend Johnny Beattie. Sadly, financial pressures and an operating model that no longer worked saw The Gaiety bow out on the 31st January 2009.

2012/13 Who’s running the show?

In September 2012, Ayr Gaiety Partnership Limited (AGP) took on a 99-year lease of the Gaiety for a ‘peppercorn’ rent from South Ayrshire Council. AGP was set up in 2009 by two local residents, who were then joined by three more volunteers to make up the current Board. Together with our Executive Director Vince Hope, they provide the dynamic inspiration for the progressive development of The Gaiety, and lead a dedicated core team of staff with responsibility for day to day management of the operation, supported by our brilliant volunteers.

Want to get involved?

The company is a social enterprise – so it exists to serve the local community, not to make profit. It’s a charity too so it has to meet all sorts of external scrutiny. But most of all, it is community owned and membership of the company will grow over the next few years – to include hundreds of local people of all ages and interests. Anyone living or working in South Ayrshire, and anyone else with something to offer, can apply to become a member of the company. There is no financial benefit for members but a great opportunity to shape The Gaiety’s future.

Want to join our team?

Join our family of volunteers to help in fundraising, front of house, technical backstage roles and putting in the day-to-day, week-to-week effort that will keep The Gaiety vibrant. Volunteers are, quite literally, the beating heart of the new Gaiety. There are already over 100 – to become one of us all you need to do is volunteer.

More Capital Restoration? Yes. On the capital front, so far there has been over £1 million of investment from The Scottish Government, South Ayrshire Council, The Enterprise Growth Fund, South Ayrshire Waste and Environment Trust and donations from local businesses and residents. We are very grateful for all this support and incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to achieve with it so far—from brand new Studio Theatre, café, and toilets, to keeping the building wind and watertight, sorting out rot, replacing heating, ventilation and electrical installations.

getting .

But a hundred-year old building comes with more than a few signs of wear and tear, so we are going to need further investment to achieve our full vision. We have opened up the main entrance already but we need to do a little internal remodelling to create a more open and friendly space. In the main theatre, the balcony has some great views of the stage but it’s not suitable for an audience at present. All the seating will need to be refurbished or renewed and the stage facilities require upgrading. Phase two of our refurbishment plans will tackle all of these and more.

big plans continued We are delighted to announce that Creative Scotland has backed our vision by earmarking over £1 million for the next phase in our restoration plans. With another £600,000 or so to raise, we have our work cut out, but we are confident we can rise to this challenge in 2013. During phase two the main auditorium will have to close for restoration work to be carried out, so Creative Scotland has provided us with funding to get expert advice to guide planning these works with minimum disruption to our programme. Our future plans include a full-screen projection in the main auditorium and addressing the environmental impact of our heating and lighting to help secure our future economic and environmental sustainability.

Running costs South Ayrshire Council has backed The Gaiety with a contribution of £750,000 over five years starting in 2012 to allow us to get up and running, build our audiences and establish a secure footing. This doesn’t mean we have money to spare, so right from the start we are making sure we keep income up and costs to a minimum. And by listening to our audiences, keeping prices down and utilising digital media we hope to make every show a great success.
