Urban Forestry To Create Sustainable Tomorrow

By taking advantage of the idea of urban forestry, I tried to increase the greenery and canopy of the trees in the West Loop. Trees are one of the most critical natural resources of Chicago.They provide beauty and cool temperatures in the summer months, help clean the air, and, most importantly, are vital to our fight against climate change. One of the goals is to plant 75,000 new trees to create a sustainable tomorrow by making an impact today. Regarding the idea of UF, the site is like a central core of the West Loop; all greenery could be attached to that by increasing greenary and planting street trees.

Concept of The Site

Site analysis and inventory of the urban context of Chicago give information about downtown Chicago’s programming. Those programming that acts as external forces shaped the concept, the main programming, and the circulation of the Site. Programs such as tall buildings, density, parks, entertainment, and mobility in the downtown push the Site from the east and the north side. Mary park, from the Site’s north part, shapes the Site’s main(lines) circulation and strategies. Three main lines are Mobility(pathway), Mounds(make the Site unique), and Trees( as a forest) which are the main concept for the Site.

Concept

Proposing the new contours and mounds makes the Site more natural and unique than all of Chicago. Mounds are the Site’s most significant elements, and all the buildings have been built in a natural context. Because of the harmony between the bulding and the sote context, there are three mounds on the top of the roof of commercial and parking buidlings . The height range of mounds on the ground is between 10 ft to 20 feet.

Future:

Regarding the urban strategy, I increased the canopy of the trees on the site and roof gardens on the top of the proposed sustainable houses, street trees, and proposed pocket parks. And improve some of the intersections by planting trees and offering new materials and seats.

Revitelizing the streets: Since the width of most of the street is vast, and according to traffic and future Vehicle usage charts, In this zoom-in layout, you also can see that the width of the street is narrowed because of proposing the street parking spots.
