Academic/Individual Project
The Red Walk park is the centerpiece between the lake and the downtown. It is where a majority of the people walk to reach the lake daily and on weekends. Try redesigning the park as a public space within the city that is not like other parks but a piece of nature on a small scale. This park›s function is to allow people to experience nature on a small urban scale in the city center at any time of the day or night.
Form: With a conceptual design, the idea of the new landform has been created by combining curved models by subtracting, adding, and mixing two models. Using datum and curved forms to shape brought us closer to the primary form, central path, and concept.
Programming of the landscape and zones: The new proposed programming is divided into three main zones, 1) an open grassy area, 2) tree lines and 3) shrubs. The proposed landform is the result of layering the final conceptual clay model process and All these three zones› programming. All these three zones are connected with twisting pathways linking one to another.
Seasonality: Having a line of Ginkgo trees and Norway maples and mixing them allows having a seasonality concept in the park. Besides, The red concrete pathways contrast the green of the grassy area during the summer, becoming consistent with the color of the seasonal trees during the fall.
Programming and Non-programming spaces for the users: The curved-shaped mounds in the open grassy areas with a maximum height of 5 feet allow the people to stand on the top to view the lake, and the children have fun by sliding down from them. Moreover, a big plaza covered by grass makes a gathering area for various outdoor activities, which is a non-programming aspect of the site. The open space between the trees makes for an enjoyable sitting place to revitalize oneself. The Shrub zone allows people to feel nature by walking among tall shrubs. Overall, Red Park gives the chance to experience and appreciate nature while feeling a bond with it at the same time.
