NIKE MATERIALS Sustainability INDEX Detailed Summary for Product Creation Teams and Suppliers
WHAT IS IT?
WHY IS IT NEEDED?
The Nike Materials Sustainability Index (Nike MSI) is a tool to help Nike product creation teams select environmentally better footwear and apparel materials from better suppliers.
ALIGNS FOOTWEAR AND APPAREL INDEXES Provides a common framework to score materials for all Nike product indexes.
SCORING SYSTEM Evaluates the environmental impacts of materials used in Nike products using a combination of material-specific data and supplier performance in Nike and third-party sustainability programs.
POINTS STRUCTURE Awards up to 100 points using a science-based material score (up to 50 Quantitative points) and environmental indicator scores (up to 50 Qualitative points).
IMPACTS COVERED Chemistry, Energy and Greenhouse Gas Intensity, Water and Land Use Intensity, and Waste.
LIFE CYCLE PHASE Cradle to gate—from farm or wellhead to finished material.
PROVIDES SUPPLIER INCENTIVES Rewards suppliers with higher scores for their materials for participating in sustainability programs that reflect Nike priorites. DRIVES INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP Helps deliver the best supply chain and creates a transparent methodology for materials scoring for use by the industry.
HOW DO WE MEASURE THE IMPACT OF MATERIALS CHOICES? Nike’s long-term corporate sustainability commitment—our North Star goals—drove the development of Nike MSI, a universal materials index. “Universal” means that it can potentially score any material and thus feed any product index. The Nike Footwear Sustainability Index (Nike FSI) and the Nike Apparel Sustainability Index (Nike ASI) enable us to design products with a lower impact on the environment. They use a single framework to focus on the impacts important to Nike, incorporate Nike MSI scores to help select better materials from better suppliers, and reward industry-leading manufacturing practices. Target launches for Nike MSI are SP13 for footwear models and FA13 for apparel product. Nike Copyright 2012 LAST UPDATED JANUARY 2012
