Golf Special Extended GOLF CALENDAR OF EVENTS

LAKEWOODOAKSCC.COM

From the General Manager, Mark Reid I want to personally thank all our members who have been so loyal and dedicated to the Club this year. It has been a rewarding experience for me to watch everyone work together and look out for each other while we kept the game going during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the history of golf, many people have stated that it is the greatest game ever. Who would have ever thought it would be the only game, as well?

We are evolving into Phase 1 of the re-opening. We do so with all the knowledge we have learned over the past several months. We have learned that the 64064-zip code, with a population of 17,534, recorded 20 cases of COVID-19. This is a 0.12% chance of catching the virus. We are fortunate to live in the suburbs during this period where the rate is extremely low compared to the rates of big cities. So, we will move forward towards normalcy, unafraid due to what we have learned, not overconfident, yet definitely not

over reactive or overreaching in our actions. We will move forward with the same common sense that all of us have always had, and we will continue to look out for each other. That is what makes us a great Club in a great Community. I want to welcome all the new members to the Club. We have had a fantastic level of new membership, as well as great member retention. This is going to be a wonderful summer that will feel extra special.

The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of 651 NE St. Andrews Circle Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 816.373.2505 LakewoodOaksCC.com

The Latest From the Clubhouse Manager FRANK CASCONE, CLUBHOUSE MANAGER

Hello, Lakewood members and residents. During these strange and different times, let us help you with the task of dinner. We have great deals on food and wine at the Clubhouse. All you need to do is call us, tell us what you want to eat and drink, and we will deliver it to your car under the awning in the front of the building. You can choose from charcuterie trays, chicken fajitas, burgers, pizzas among the wide variety of choices. Check out our menu online at lakewoodoakscc.com. Look under Club Offerings, The Argyle, Carry Out Menu and call it in to 816-541-2452. We will do the rest. Maybe, just maybe, we will get the okay from the state to reopen the restaurant in May, so keep your fingers crossed that this happens. I know everyone is bored with the stay-at-home order. Looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces soon - hang in there. FRANK CASCONE, Clubhouse Manager Fcascone@logc.org

Wine of the Month ROSÊ

Rosé season is here! Actually, for many Rose’ fans, the season is 365 days long (366 in 2020), but the arrival of Spring invites the fresh and bright flavors of Rosé. Rosé and Spring are something of a coincidence. After harvest in the fall, there is fermentation and a few months in stainless steel tanks or the bottle. March and April are when the wines are first available. However, the crisp, berry flavors of a good Rosé are amplified by a warm sunny day. In these days of limited movement and socialization, sitting on the back deck and conversing across the fence with the neighbors and enjoying a bottle of Rose’ is just about as good as it gets. There are Rosé from many grape varieties and dozens of wine regions. So how should one select from all these choices? I enjoy Rosé with bright acidity and flavors of strawberries and raspberries. Garnacha Rosado from Spain, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan in various blends from the south of France and the Rhone Valley fit my favored profile. Pinot Noir Rosé from Willamette Oregon and Russian River, California are delicious, too. Often small wineries that specialize in Rosé are the best producers. Rosé is often enjoyed most when young and fresh, but many good ones are still tasty a year or two after vintage. In a few hours, I will have my weekly, happy hour Zoom with old friends. I think I will enjoy a glass of Rosé. Or two!

From the LOCC Golf Club Committee As everyone continues to abide by the ever changing COVID restrictions, the Golf Committee would like to thank all those at the club that maintain a safe environment for golf play. The joy and fun of golf is a great relief, especially now. As the 2020 golf season gets underway, we ask that while on the course, if you notice potential issues or concerns please convey those to a member of the LOCC Golf Committee. After that, the committee will participate in the research and discussion of the topic in our monthly meeting then bring those recommendations to the LHC & LPOA Board of Directors. We are sure that you have noticed the removal of the wood split rail fencing. We ask you notify the pro shop if you see non golfers on the course and/or cart paths, for safety issues. There is a plan to replace the split rail fence along the tee boxes on #6 with black wrought iron fence, again for safety reasons. With the volume of play, the course is being utilized to the fullest of capacity given the circumstances. The committee would like to remind golfers of our “Caring for the Course” initiative that has been recently implemented. What can I do to assist in “Caring for the Course” during COVID? • Replace or tamp down divots on tee box or in fairway. • Repair unattended ball marks on the green. • Ensure yourself and players in your group are entering the sand bunkers from the low side. • Take note of anything on your hole that you think is array and bring it to the attention of Brian Bateman (Head Golf Pro). What hole on the courses am I assigned to? Last name starts with:

A: #1 B: #2 C: #3 D-E: #4 F: #5

G: #6 H: #7 I-J: #8 K: #9 L: #10

M: #11 N: #12 O-P: #13 R: #14 S: #15

STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Caring for the Course (adapted from USGA guidelines)

A few extra seconds is all it takes to help keep the course looking and playing its best!

BALL MARK REPAIR • A ball mark repair tool is recommended; however, other pointed devices can also be used. • Starting from the back and sides, gently push/stretch the turf toward the center. • Avoid lifting or twisting the turf. • Use your putter to lightly tap down the mark. • Remember that ball marks are often far from where the ball lies, so check the front of the green. • Fix your ball mark and the marks of others.

DIVOT REPAIR • Replacing the divot is the best option, assuming the divot has some soil attached. Without oil, the divot quickly dries out and is pulled back out of the ground during the next mowing. • If the divot cannot be replaced, fill the divot with the material provided by the maintenance staff. • Do – Fill divots with the material provided by the maintenance staff. • Do not – Overfill divots, which results in a sand mount that can dull or damage the mowing units.

Thanks for doing your part in taking care of the course. See you out there! CLUBLIFE 13

Fitness Tip of the Month ALICIA ZELLER, RAISING Z BAR FITNESS With the new rules of COVID-19 affecting golf, it may be putting a new perspective on your golf game. You might be finding yourself more mindful as you are playing. You might even notice being more aware of the present, observing your thoughts and feelings and becoming aware and enjoying the relationships that you have around you while playing golf.

Holistic Wellness & Nutrition Coaching

During this strange time, you may want to add “mindfulness” to your golf game. Mindfulness is a state of active open attention in the present. It is being present moment-to-moment by the way you think, feel and sense, without judgement. It is not about the past or the future, but about the “now.” Here are a few exercises that you can incorporate using mindfulness while playing golf.

1

Become aware and observe your thoughts. Ask yourself, “Am I present, or is my mind someplace else?” If you find that your mind is somewhere else, bring it back to your breath. Breathing in and out slowly box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4).

2

Practice slow deep breathing for one minute. Inhaling through the nose and a longer exhale out.

3

Relax your body. Let go of your thoughts and the things you need to do.

4

Allow yourself to connect with your authentic self, nature, and allow the flow in.

5

Be in the here and now. Be present, not thinking of the outcome or the next shot.

6

After hitting the ball, take a few seconds to evaluate your shot. Keep in mind you are not judging yourself and you are keeping a neutral mind.

7

The past is the past. Keep that last golf shot in the past and wait to think about the next hole. You are in the “now” concentrating on the present hole, the right here and right now.

Mindfulness works! This practice will help your golf game and it will help you to get out of your head while playing golf. Give mindfulness a try next time you are on the golf course!
