From the General Manager, Mark Reid We continue to stay focused on our mission at hand and that is to provide an excellent experience for our members. As we open back up the Clubhouse this month to fundamentally full service based on our normal occupancy rates, I want to assure you that we will continue to utilize all best practices to assure the safety of our members, as well as our staff, until such time that COVID-19 is eradicated or we all have access to a vaccine. Frankly, we are all a bit weary of hearing about COVID-19, and we are eager to return to normal or better than normal. This is what we are

focused on. We have all learned a thing or two over the past three months that in the long run will make us better. I have asked the Golf Staff to get us back to two people per cart. This can be accomplished through the belief that those members who play golf together are fully aware that if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 or even just feeling ill, that they are not to come to the facility. This trust and looking out for each other is what will get us back to normal. With a sharp rise in membership, our standard fleet of golf carts cannot support the standard tee time intervals. Therefore, now that we are in Phase 2, we ask you to

ride two (2) to a cart and if there are distancing concerns, please feel free to wear a protective mask while riding in the cart. As always, if you have grave concerns or believe you need a special accommodation, please feel free to discuss this with the Golf Staff. We are on a great trajectory for the year, and good things will come of it. I want to personally thank each and every member of the Club for their care, concern for, and support of the Club. We never lost a beat this year, and we will emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic stronger than ever. Have a wonderful summer!

The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of 651 NE St. Andrews Circle Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 816.373.2505 LakewoodOaksCC.com

Help Keep Your Practice Range In The Best Shape Possible

W

E WOULD ALL ENJOY A LARGER grass hitting area on the practice range, however,

we are virtually landlocked. That does not mean that we are stuck with a subpar hitting area. Instead it means that it takes a bit more budget and maintenance time, and most importantly a better way hit shots.

To maximize the use of the grass on the driving range tee, please place your ball at the grassy back edge of your previous divot, removing just a small portion of grass with each swing. Step 1 Practice in a linear pattern by placing each new shot directly behind the previous divot. Step 2 Leave a strip of turf between each line of divots roughly 4 inches wide.

Welcome Jason Huska, LOCC’s new Assistant Golf Professional! Hello! My name is Jason Huska and I am a new Assistant Golf Professional here at Lakewood Oaks Country Club. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and am excited to get started! I currently reside in Kansas City, Missouri. I have been married for just over two years to my wife, Ellie. When I am not golfing or at work, I still enjoy being outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and other sports are some of my favorite hobbies. I grew up in Kansas City and attended Rockhurst High School where I played multiple sports. I graduated in 2012, and won the Missouri State Championship in golf my senior year. I walked on to UMKC to play golf, but it was a lot with school at the time. I then attended the University of Missouri. Shortly after, I entered the PGA PGM Program and was a Lead Instructor at Topgolf in Overland Park. Golf and teaching are a passion of mine, and I truly enjoy helping others with their game. As I said, I am looking forward to meeting everyone and see you soon!

Hello Lakewood. I have good news - the Argyle opened June 2! We have made a few changes to keep with the Phase 2, COVID-19 Guidelines. Here is what you can expect. • Reservations are highly recommended to eat at the Argyle. • It will be members only during this phase to help keep us all safe. • We will be able to accommodate 50 people at a time in the restaurant to keep with the social distancing recommendations. I know this is going to be a chore for all of us, so please remember to make your reservations to hold your seat. We are all looking forward to getting back to a normal life. Wine of the Month LIGHT HORSE

If you enjoy a red wine that is pleasurable by itself, with appetizers or experienced with a meal, then you will appreciate Light Horse from the Jamieson Ranch Vineyards, located in Napa Valley, California. Light Horse is a nod to the American West and to the invaluable horses that helped settle this vast and untamed region of the country. This is a wine you will turn to every day: classic, easy-drinking and fruit-forward California varietal that offers superior value and complement the foods you enjoy. True to the varietal character, this Cabernet is fruit-forward and highly enjoyable. Jamieson Ranch Vineyards was founded in 2011. The winery is named after the historic rancher John Brocklebank Jameson, who helped to settle the Napa Valley. Today, they pay homage to the rich ranching tradition of the Napa Valley and American West through their wines: Double Lariat, a double lasso, and Reata, the Spanish word for Lariat. While the winery brings together rich threads of history, their winemaker brings together grapes grown in revered appellations to create unique and individual wines. Their brands, Whiplash and Light Horse, both available at The Argyle at Lakewood Oaks Country Club, celebrate the horses that played an important role making the Napa Valley and American West what it is today.

Chef’s Whim EXECUTIVE CHEF MOLLY MYERS

Welcome back to the Argyle! Our team is excited to be open and serving you in the restaurant again! Our curbside menu was a big hit, so we will continue with a menu specifically for those who would rather dine in their own home or on their deck or boat. Grab ‘n Go in the St. Andrews Pub has been popular, with new items every day. Golf season is in full swing (sorry about the pun), so we will keep it stocked so you can get back out on the course. As always, you can get a made-to-order sandwich, treats and drinks to take with you. Grilling also takes place on weekends outside of the Pub. We are also stocking the pools with great snacks, made fresh daily. As you can see, our team is busy. We hope you enjoy all that we have to offer.

Turf Talk

STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Rhizoctonia is a fancy name for a turf disease called brown patch (or Zoysia Patch). This fungus has lightly infected our Zoysia fairways. Is it treatable? YES. Are we treating it? YES. Is it helping? YES and NO. The areas are not spreading, but the areas infected are thin, but showing signs of improving. As the disease infects areas in the fairways, small circles appear with a rust colored ring around the outside. The turf begins to thin. Then when the turf plant weakens, weeds (POA, chickweed, spurge, clover) tend to germinate. Zoysia Patch happens when outside temperatures are cool and damp. As we all know, that has been the case in late May, with large amounts of rain and cool days and nights. We have had minor outbreaks in the spring every year, but not to this extreme. To solve the problem, we need heat so we can grow Zoysia through the disease. To promote this process, we will be fertilizing to promote healthier turf. We will also be spraying various pesticides for weeds and disease prevention. See you on the course.

From the LOCC Golf Club Committee

In response, here is our first New Member Feature to help you to get to know fellow golfers.

Lakewood Oaks Country Club golf membership has had a significant spike in the last few months. It is our hope that all members feel welcomed and enjoy their golf experience. Wouldn’t it be great when you joined a club, you had the feeling you had been there for a long time! To help with this, an Ambassadorship Program is in the works. If you are interested in being an ambassador, please contact a Committee member. If you joined or rejoined since April (and all future members), will receive the following email. Hello, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Donna Round, Lakewood Oaks Country Club Golf Committee, reaching out to our newest golf club members and their families. If you are a new member or a returning member, welcome to what we consider one of KC’s finest Country Clubs. Our committee, along with all members and staff, are working hard to give each member the best experience of golf, socializing, dining, etc. at Lakewood Oaks. As with any club, your experience will be enhanced by getting to know other members. To help with this goal, our committee would like to feature the newest (1st time or returning) members and their families with a submitted picture and brief bio in the ClubLife monthly, online magazine. Rather than me setting up a time to meet with each of you to take a picture and write a short note about you and your family, I am asking for you to send a picture of just you or you and your family to bestround84@yahoo.com along with some information that you would like share with others. At Lakewood Oaks Country Club, our goal is to help give you the feeling of being here forever. Again, welcome to Lakewood Oaks! Thank you, Donna

Meet Brent Deshong and Family “Heather and I, along with Trinity (13 - Right), Isabella (12 - Left), are excited to be back at Lakewood. We look forward to many golf outings and continuing the friendships we have established over the years in this fantastic community.” Looking forward: The Committee is looking at the Club Rules and Regulations regarding golf areas, last updated in 2012. Current Rules and Regulations can be found at https://lakewoodoaksgolfclub. clubhouseonline-e3.com/ getmedia/439dffd1-5401-40589fcf-65fcb0c155d8/LOGC_Rules_ and_Regulations_4-12-12.aspx The Golf Committee is dedicated to listening to members and continuing to improve members’ golf experience at Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Submit your topics to the Golf Committee members: Jim Lysinger, Chris Johns, Val Young, Scott Wall or myself. We want to hear from you on how to improve the golf experience at LOGC.
