From the General Manager, Mark Reid We are pleased to announce that Mr. Todd Schneekloth has joined us as our new Food and Beverage Director. Todd comes to us from the Lawrence Country Club where he served as their Executive Chef. Prior to his Country Club service, Todd managed the culinary services for a group of high end hotels. As we have utilized a Food and Beverage Director position before, we are pleased to get back to this key position which assures that all sections of the Food and Beverage operations, kitchen, dining room, pub, banquet, snack bar, all work efficiently and in harmony for maximum customer as well as stakeholder satisfaction. Todd’s strong culinary ability, crafted over 25 years of outstanding service, will complement
Chef Molly’s role as Executive Chef and provide additional teamwork when required during the busiest of times. Please join me in welcoming Todd and getting to know him, as he is eager to get to know all of our members. We are also pleased that we are able to hire a U.S. Army veteran. Frank and the service staff are looking forward to the surge in business that begins in September. The rest of the year is very busy with many social functions as well as banquets and holiday parties. If you are still planning an event, please call Frank as soon as possible to make sure your special date can be reserved. If you haven’t noticed the Argyle’s weekly specials, please check them out. Each week, Chef Molly has been creating a themed menu of special offerings at an attractive price. We believe this truly enhances our customer
experience when you have a choice to try something new and special or your favorite offering from our regular menu. We are truly committed to our customers’ excellent dining, golf and socializing experience, as we continue to strive to maintain “your favorite place” status. Thank you all for your continued support of the Lakewood Oaks Country Club. We look forward to seeing you again soon. I want to congratulate our 2019 Club Golf Champions Marck De Lautour and Sheri Rehmer. The competition was fierce this year, yet you prevailed. Well played. Additionally, I want to congratulate our Senior Club Golf Champions Ron Lewis and Jan Voth. Fantastic rounds of golf.

5 Significant Changes to the Handicap Index Calculation
KYLE PIEDIMONTE, ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL
Over the next few months, the USGA GHIN System is undergoing a major overhaul. The World Handicap System will go into effect January 1, 2020, and will be the golf handicapping system that will replace GHIN. We will send out updates as new information is revealed.
1. Minimum of 3 scores needed to establish index (54 holes) 2. Average the lowest 8 of the most recent 20 Score Differentials and round to the nearest tenth 3. Playing Conditions Calculation a. This calculation will take weather and other playing conditions into account on the day the golfer plays his/ her round. It will adjust the course rating, minimally by factoring in how other golfers played that same day. b. PCC will be conservative in nature, so we expect the vast majority of the time the PCC adjustment will be ‘0’. à More education coming in October 2 Newsletter. 4. Exceptional Score Reduction a. A score differential which is at least 7.0 strokes better than the player’s Handicap Index at the time the round was played à More education coming in October 9 Newsletter. 5. Addition of Soft/Hard Cap to limit upward movement a. A reduction or limit on the increase of a player’s Handicap Index over a rolling 12-month period, measured against the player’s Low Handicap Index within that period à More education coming in October 16 Newsletter.

Lubanzi is a story about a wandering dog. Or is it a story about a tasty wine from South Africa? Actually, it is both and also a story of entrepreneurial spirit. Charlie Brain, a native of Kansas City, was a young study abroad student in South Africa. After completing his studies, Charlie extended his stay and set out on a long hike with friends along the “wild coast” of eastern South Africa. On the first day of
the hike, a wild dog began to follow the group. Later, at a camp area along the trail, another hiker commented that Charlie’s group brought Lubanzi. Charlie asked, “Who’s Lubanzi?” The dog, of course. As Charlie’s group neared the trail’s end, Lubanzi disappeared, presumably to attach himself to another group. During his time in South Africa, Charlie also developed a love of the wines of South Africa. The Brain family had previous experience in the wine industry and soon Charlie partnered with South African winemakers and they created a new wine brand. It had to be named for Lubanzi, the wandering dog. Lubanzi Chenin Blanc is bright, fresh and easy drinking. This Chenin shows tasty flavors of green apple and tangerine. It is light, yet full of flavor, so it is ideal with salads, light pastas and seafood, or simply on its own. You can find this delightful wine at The Argyle. Give it a taste and see what you think!

Turf Talk STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Sometimes people ask, “When is the best time to seed or renovate my yard? The answer is always September for cool season grasses, which are most prominent in this region. This is the best time of the year because what you do in the fall is how well the turf will perform in the coming year.
16 LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB
If your yard is thin and weak from summer stress, disease, grubs etc., core aerate and/or verti-cut and overseed the yard. Apply a starter fertilizer with the middle number being the highest, which is the phosphorus in the analysis, i.e. 12-24-18. Keep the seed moist, but not overly watered, and try not to mow until seed has germinated (usually 10 to 14 days).
Then in late October/early November add another application of fertilizer. Use a slow release fertilizer which is commonly called a winterizer. Then in the spring, reap what you sow! Hope to see you on the course.

Fitness Tip of the Month ALICIA ZELLER, RAISING Z BAR FITNESS
With summer ending and lots of golf being played, your body might be feeling used and abused. Repetitive movement, along with walking the golf course on undulating terrain, can cause extra strain to your body. The muscles in your feet, ankles, knees and hips take a toll, particularly on your areas of weakness. It may compromise your swing! Golf swings can result in physical demands on your body. It is important for you to strengthen the muscles around your knees and hips and to keep your joints flexible to avoid risk of injury. Even having good ankle strength is crucial to your swing! Strong ankles allow you to maintain balance, posture and rotation on the lead leg.
Exercises to Strengthen Your Hips and Knees

The Argyle Gallery will feature another talented Lakewood Artist, Jennylynne Gragg, during the months of September and October.
Jennylynne became a full-time artist in 2006. She took a hiatus from art to care for her mother in 2010, and in 2015 resumed her craft with workshops and classes with national artists and daily painting. She focuses her art in oils and pastels, using a process that starts with transparent paint and builds the color out from there, using brush and palette knife techniques. Jennylynne feels painting en plein air enhances her studio work. She paints alla prima in the studio to carry on the feeling she achieves when painting en plein air. Jennylynne believes art is
In addition to her gallery venues, she takes commissions for pet portraits, gardens, flowers, and landscapes. She also creates from studies and photos of places she has traveled. Jennylynne has enhanced her skills with art education classes from the community college and with nationally known artists. Many wonderfully creative people have contributed to her passion for pastels and oils. Jennylynne and her husband, Michael, have lived in Lakewood with their pups since 2010. They enjoy all the amenities and love living on their cove with awesome lake views. She often paints throughout Lakewood, but her favorite spots are on her seawall and garden or gardens of friends.
“To me, the intimate scenes of nature, the intricate beauty of flowers, the shimmer of water in its many forms, the patterns on trees, and the softness of an animal’s coat inspire me in my quest of art. I hope to help people connect with the intimacies around us, and focus on the portraits of what many people miss when they wander through our world. I paint what I love, what excites me, what soothes me, and hope that my viewers find a similar joy when they view my art.” Please be sure to come up to the clubhouse and see another talented Lakewood artist display her creations. Take time for a cocktail and/or dinner in the Argyle for a unique and enjoyable evening.

SEPTEMBER September 21 Snazzy Jazzy Event for the Arts
OCTOBER October 5 Oktoberfest Buffet October 19 A Taste of Italy Buffet October 26 Gourmet Wine & Dine
From the LOCC Golf Club Committee
St. Andrews Pub at Lakewood Oaks Country Club
#16 could be a “Signature Hole”. Suggestion make a small fairway that would run in the front and part way on right side of green; also shorten the height of the rough. Committee suggest that several tee boxes could use a mulch walkway to tee boxes that are currently bare ground walkway. Handicap committee has an opening for a couple of committee members. Please consider volunteering for this committee.
Tuesday – Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Happy Hour, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Join us for a drink, sandwich, soup, Grab & Go and the best Biscuits and Gravy (available Friday – Sunday)
Committee would suggest members continue to review the proper way to fix ball marks to enable turf to recover as quickly as possible. Here is an USGA video and graphic to assist. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myOTf1wuZoA
Correct Method
The Pub - 816.541.2453
NOVEMBER November 6 Artist Reception November 8 Veteran’s Day Dinner
DECEMBER December 14 Lakewood Kid’s Christmas Party
Incorrect Method
Indoor Hitting. Committee has investigated and secured a relationship with a “nearby” indoor practice facility. Permanent hole directional signs. With outside groups and encouraging LPOA members to play Lakewood course. Permanent signs are suggested for speed of play and courtesy. Mainly from holes 1 to 2, 6 to 7, and 8 to 9. Also discussed need for signage from I-70 to the course, as it’s not obvious on how to get to The Club. Driving range yardage sign, clock and clock on putting green. These items would also benefit guests, along with functionality. C Flag has not arrived, hopefully soon. Then will be placed on course, possibly driving range. An evaluation of durability, cost and function will determine future purchase of more flags. New Member Welcome “Ambassador” to start in January, February, March. Committee would like to see current members to develop an Ambassador program to reach out to new members and their families for an easy transition to becoming a member. Tee Times availability. Although it appears more availability is online, actually members view a message needing to wait until Tuesday at noon. Research is being done.
