From the GM WELCOME NEW GOLF MEMBERS

LAKEWOODOAKSCC.COM

From the General Manager, Mark Reid Welcome to 2021. We start the year with a very positive outlook. I must admit, when I wrote my articles for January 2020 I had a positive outlook for the year. It even got better in February when the Kansas City Chiefs won the World Championship. Then came March and COVID-19. But as difficult as 2020 was, it was also a wonderful year for the Club. We have such amazing members - we all looked out for each other – and we’ll carry that energy over to 2021. In fact, we are rapidly approaching a point where we reach our membership capacity and we will start a waiting list. We believe we will start reducing some COVID-19 restrictions by the

time Spring arrives and we get back to near normal. We look forward to the continued success of Operation Warp Speed and the end to the pandemic. So we are busy again in January and February making improvements and preparing for another fantastic year of golf. We continue to work on the outdoor dining concepts A & B. This process has been slow to materialize in late 2020 due to illness. I have meetings with the Architect scheduled, and we will accelerate the plan B concept in early 2021. I hope to have the graphics to present to the Board of Directors and membership by the March Board meeting. In the December Board meeting, the LHC Board of Directors voted unanimously to keep dues flat for 2021. As Inflation was 1%, we can accommodate the increased costs through increased membership.

Cart Packages did go up slightly to $130 per month for a Family Package and $95 per month for a Single Package. This is a small increase to accommodate our increased costs in providing the new premium cart fleet for our members. Daily Cart fees are now $13 for 9 holes and $25 for 18 holes. Guest Fees were adjusted accordingly to $55 for weekday and $70 for premium days. We believe that 2021 will be a fantastic year. But whatever 2021 brings our way, we will adapt, improve and carry on. All of the Staff of Lakewood Oaks Country Club wish you a joyous and prosperous New Year.

The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of 651 NE St. Andrews Circle Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 816.373.2505 LakewoodOaksCC.com

As we welcome in 2021, here are a few things to keep in mind or take care of during that winter months: Rounds played in the Kansas City area are not eligible to be posted to GHIN. We remain in the “Inactive Season from January 1 – February 28, 2021”. Early and mid-morning frost delays continue to back up early tee times. It is crucial that when we are in those delays that members do not venture out onto any of the greens, including the putting green. Damage from footprints on the green can not only kill portions of the greens, but also make for a very ragged appearance during the winter months. When we are in a frost delay tee times simply get pushed back (early groups do not lose their times). Cart Regulations are extremely important this time of year. With the grasses dormant this time of

LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

year moisture is not absorbed at the rate that we are used to. It is for this reason that we are restricted to the cart path more often. Even though we might not have received much moisture, areas of the golf course can be very wet. It is not up to the individual member to decide if they should drive on the cart path or not. Accidental ruts on the golf course are not fun to play from and the rules of golf give you no relief from such areas. It is for that reason that many public courses restrict all play to cart path only during all winter months. Private club members should have more pride in their facility, so please check your cart sign or check in the golf shop for cart regulations for that day if you are unsure. Winter cart policy is to drive in the rough as much as possible

when not restricted to the cart path. This means always leave your cart in the rough. If you ball is on the other side of the fairway from the cart path, you can simply drive through the rough before the fairway begins and park you cart in the opposite side rough. There will always be situations where you will have to cross the fairway to get back to the cart path, but you should never drive down the middle of the fairway or park your cart in the fairway while you hit your shot. Again, ruts and damage to fairway health are problems this time of year, so please take those few extra steps to protect the condition of your golf course. This is a great time of year to get your clubs re-gripped or to change out the spikes in your shoes for the upcoming golf season.

Returning Lakewood Artists Exhibit Two of our talented Lakewood artists will be exhibiting their recent works during the months of January and February. Both have exhibited in the Argyle Room gallery before, and both continue to evolve and progress with each exhibit.

Jennylynne Gragg Jennylynne Gragg has adapted her painting practices to deal with the pandemic. Her favorite way of painting en plein air is essentially a way of social-distancing outside in all times. However, this year’s cancellation of exhibits and plein air events, has kept the artists from the camaraderie of painting in the same locations at the same time. This summer, Jennylynne and her husband, Michael, purchased a travel trailer so they could still visit the places where events had been cancelled.

“The campgrounds were still open, so we just booked a campsite and painted in the scheduled places anyway.

10 LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

Trips this fall have included painting locations such in Augusta and Bennett Springs, Missouri, as well as Kansas and Oklahoma prairies. Jennylynne has added acrylics to her medium, which is less toxic and dries more quickly, helping her to plan her paintings ahead. She is currently focusing on portraits of people and animals, but a future goal is to paint a landscape in every county in Missouri. Welcome our returning artists and see how their creativity has evolved and adjusted to the challenges of the past year. Drop by for dinner in the Argyle or take your cocktail to the gallery and spend some time enjoying the art of Thomasine and Jennylynne.

Thomasine Weber

Thomasine Weber is a professional photographer who specializes in contemporary black and white portraits. Many of her works capture clients in intimate poses, highlighting tenderness and spontaneity. Her art has evolved through the years, coming into the digital age, eventually moving away from color to black and white for a more defined, crisp image.

"My love of black and white has always been about the depth and emotion it provokes." Thomasine’s photography journey began in middle school and continued through undergrad not realizing that this would turn into her career. Her first 35mm camera belonged to her boyfriend, Bob, who later became her husband. After their son, Zach, was born in 1990, Thomasine enrolled in community college to pursue her love of photography. There, the head of the Fine Arts Department encouraged her to start her own business. The demand in the early 90’s was still color, and Thomasine adapted her work with outdoor settings, rather than conventional background studio settings. With her love of black and white and people, and outdoor photography being so seasonal, she earned a degree in radiography and worked in mammography, trauma and orthopedics. After leaving the medical field, she opened Thomasine Weber Photography. Thomasine and her husband, Bob, have lived in Lakewood for 12 years. Their son, Zach, and his wife, Whitney, have given them three “awesome” grandsons. Thomasine has sponsored the Lakewood Swim Team and other community activities.
