From the General Manager, Mark Reid Once again, the groundhog has seen its shadow. Only six more weeks of winter. After hitting the one-year mark for the pandemic this month, we are all more than ready for some warmer weather and fun on the golf course. This month, we will be presenting the “Plan B” concept for outside food and beverage area to the Board. This concept provides for outside seating in the area between the pond and the Saint Andrews Pub. After hearing comments from the Board of Directors during the February 11 meeting, we will then publish the

For obvious reasons, February is not our favorite time of the year. We are very much looking forward to March when the Clubhouse starts to come alive again and we can see and talk to

members as we enter another busy Spring, Summer and Fall. We are always optimists here at the Lakewood Oaks Country Club, and we are excited about the future as we exit the pandemic this year, hopefully by Summer, and return to a much more appreciated normal.

The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of 651 NE St. Andrews Circle Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 816.373.2505 LakewoodOaksCC.com

CHEF’S WHIM: RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Vegetarian Tortilla Casserole Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

1 medium yellow squash, sliced into ¼ inch thick rounds Kosher salt 1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese ¼ cup grated Parmesan chees Cooking spray 12 6-inch corn tortillas 4 scallions, sliced 1 cup salsa verde 1 large ripe tomato, sliced ¼ inch thick 1 thawed 9-ounce package of frozen, chopped spinach, squeezed dry

“Eat Well, Live Well, Be Well” Executive Chef Molly Myers

Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Arrange the squash on a baking sheet and sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt. Bake until just soft, about 10 minutes, flipping the squash once about halfway through. Combine the mozzarella, Parmesan and ½ teaspoon salt in a small bowl. Spray an 8” square baking dish with cooking spray. Arrange four of the tortillas in the bottom of the dish so they overlap and top with the squash and half the scallions. Drizzle 1/3 cup of salsa verde over the vegetables and top with 1/3 of the cheese mixture. Add another four overlapping tortillas, top with the sliced tomatoes and spinach, drizzle 1/3 cup of the remaining salsa verde over the vegetables and top with half of the remaining cheese mixture. Finish building the casserole with the remaining four tortillas, salsa verde and cheese mixture. Bake uncovered until the casserole is golden brown and hot, about 20-25 minutes. Garnish with the remaining scallions.

Setting SMART Goals for the Year This time of year is perfect to set goals for your upcoming golf season. Whether you like playing more competitive golf, or just enjoy getting out to play casually, everyone can benefit from setting goals for the upcoming year ahead. It gives you something extra to strive for in the coming year. Here is an example of how you can properly set goals.

SPECIFIC • MEASURABLE • ATTAINABLE • RELEVANT • TIME-BASED Specific Everyone wants to get better, so don’t just say I want to get better this year. Set a certain score you want to shoot, a handicap index you’d like to reach, and/or competitive goals such as win a tournament. Measurable Make sure the goals you set are easily measurable so you can track your progress.

Attainable The goals you set should be ambitious, but not too ambitious. Make sure it is attainable with how often you can golf and practice throughout the year. Relevant Everyone plays different amounts of golf and different amounts of casual vs. competitive golf. Your goals should be relevant to how much golf

you can play and what types of events. Time-based The goals you set are for the year, so you don’t have to achieve them all at once. For example, if one of your goals is to improve your handicap index by four, that won’t happen overnight. Try to improve it by one every two months.

Wine of the Month BALLARD LANE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

A former Wells Fargo stagecoach stop, the town of Ballard, was founded in 1880 with lofty dreams of being a future metropolis. But sometimes history has a different plan. While Ballard is the oldest community within the famed Santa Ynez Valley on California’s Central Coast, it’s also the smallest, despite the dreams of its founders. Today, Ballard is a combination of sleepy village and upscale bedroom community. The surrounding area is noted for its thriving and well-respected wine industry and was featured in the Academy Award nominated film “Sideways.” Vineyards, coastal bluffs and ranches merge seamlessly together through roads the locals call “lanes.” Ultimately, many of these paths end up in Ballard. The Ballard Lane wines are a reflection of the Millers, a Central Coast family who has farmed the area for five generations. Their proprietary knowledge of the climate and terroirs of the Central Coast are reflected in each bottle of Ballard Lane wine. The Ballard Lane Cabernet Sauvignon showcases a dark garnet color in the glass and boats alluring amounts of brambly fruit, savory spice and toasted oak in the nose. On the palate, rich flavors of plums and blackberries lead to a pleasant hint of vanilla and spice. A supple mouthfeel and velvety tannins add to the wine’s elegant appeal, while its lingering silky texture leave a lasting impression.

Sound wonderful? Stop by the The Argyle at the Lakewood Clubhouse and try it out for yourself.

From the LOCC Golf Club Committee A NEW SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING

2021 will soon be off and running into a new golf season at Lakewood Oaks Country Club. As some of us weather the colder winter temperatures here, some of you have or will surely travel to warmer areas for spring training and enjoy some pre-season golf. Travel safe. Let us share an update that began in 2020. World Handicap System (WHS) The two governing golf organizations in the world, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A), have created the World Handicap System (WHS). WHS is designed to: • improve everyone’s golf experience • deliver a unified system to create/ maintain a golf handicap • enable any golfer to have a single handicap that is usable anywhere • simplifies the overall handicap process

When we all return to LOCC for our upcoming season, we encourage everyone to continue to embrace the new WHS process and appreciate the improvements it will make for us. Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to be a better golfer? For many, improving your game means lowering your scores and handicap. Take advantage of the teaching skills of our Golf Professional staff to help you trim a few strokes off your score. Beyond better scores, being a better golfer also means being a better student of the game. One example is being more understanding of the rules, which help to provide a common framework and often improve speed-of-play. One of the more recent rule changes is when a player hits a ball out-of-bounds. The new rule gives a player the option to reload a second shot or drop a replacement ball anywhere between the approximate point where the ball went out of bounds and the edge of

the fairway, and incurring a twostroke penalty. With the start of our golf season, let’s support your LOCC and Golf Shop by updating your golf wardrobe. Being well dressed around LOCC makes a statement that you are a golfer who respects the game and the club. LOCC Golf Committee, along with other avenues, are striving to make Lakewood Oaks Country Club a destination spot. Enjoying golf, outdoor area, food and beverage that keeps you at LOCC because of the scenery, quality food and service with competitive prices. The committee is asking members to be patient and supportive with the improvements that will enhance your golf experience and your guest’s.
