From the General Manager, Mark Reid March
We are heading into Spring and everything is going great. The LPOA finance committee met this past month to certify that the 2023 LPOA and LHC financials were outstanding and both the LPOA and LHC are in wonderful financial shape. Additionally, as the LPOA finance committee voted to increase their committee membership to 12 which allowed them to add 6 new members. The finance committee is a recommending body and the members on that committee use their financial talent to analyze the financials of our two companies and recommend to the Board when everything is going great, and they make suggestions to the Board when they believe adjustments need to be made. Ultimately, your elected Board of Directors is the body with authority, not the committees. This does not discount the importance of our volunteer committees. Financially, we assure our members that everything is going right through five layers of scrutiny.
(1). The Administration Department and Management assures that we are exactly following the direction of the Board in our spending as well as services. Administration enters all receivables, payables and capital expenditures into our TOPS accounting system.
(2). Our C.P.A. then analyzes the transactions and when required makes the necessary journal entries so that revenue and expenses are correctly placed per G.A.A.P and taxation requirements. The C.P.A. also balances the Associations checking account.

(3). Our Finance Committee and Board of Directors receive our financial statements monthly for review. The General Manager also reports on the status of the financials monthly which is published to membership. The finance committee meets quarterly and issues their analysis of the quarterly financials which is then published in the Ripples Magazine.
(4). You, the member, are the 4th layer of scrutiny. Members are always free to call Administration or meet with the General Manager after they review the quarterly financials should they have questions.
(5). The Board of Directors employs an independent C.P.A. firm to audit the financials of the Association and the affiliate company Lakewood Holding Company. This report is published on the LPOA website after it is accepted by the Board in their August meeting.
We are pleased to be able to serve you in such a stringent environment that assures you every day that your dues are being spent on the members behalf in accordance with the wishes of the members per the direction of the elected board. Sleep well, my friends.

Debbie Stalnaker, Board PresidentI’m writing this article the day after the Chiefs Parade and Pep Rally, which unfortunately ended tragically. I had written another article on Monday, following the Super Bowl win, comparing how unifying a sports team can be to a community. Much like cheering for a sports team, celebrating our shared accomplishments within our LPOA, fosters camaraderie. Today, it’s a stark contrast of emotions – the joy of a Super Bowl win bringing communities together, only to be overshadowed by the senseless tragedy of events.
In the face of both exhilarating victories and heartbreaking tragedies, it’s essential that we unite as a community and stick together. I hope we can support each other, be understanding, and work as a team to make things better for everyone. Moving forward means putting extra effort into making our community stronger.
As we navigate through the highs and lows of our emotions, the upcoming LPOA elections are a chance for us to actively shape Lakewood’s future. Let’s carry the spirit of unity forward by participating in the election process, choosing leaders who prioritize collaboration, and positive change. The election process empowers residents to shape the community’s direction. Your vote is a voice in decisions that directly impact our neighborhood, from financial matters to community policies. In addition to the candidate photos and bios in this issue, you will have two additional opportunities to meet the candidates:
Wednesday, March 13 – Meet & Greet the Candidates
Wednesday, March 27 – Candidate Forum
Both events will be held at the Clubhouse at 7:00 p.m.
Like you, my heart is heavy as I write this. My hope is that, despite our shared sadness, we can come together as a community. By supporting each other and working towards positive change, we can contribute to a resilient and thriving community that addresses challenges and celebrates successes. Sharing a quote from Barb Burns, our Election Committee chair, “Lakewood...so much more than a zip code.”
Thank you for entrusting me with the privilege to serve as your LPOA/LHC President.

Mark Your Calendar for Lakewood Elections!
We are just a few days away from the Petitions for Candidacy deadline, and a little over a week out from meeting this year’s candidates at the 2024 Meet & Greet Your Candidates Night Wednesday, March 13 at 7:00 pm, Lakewood Oaks Clubhouse, which we cordially invite all residents to attend! This will be an opportunity to get to know your candidates as neighbors— and prepare to send questions to them for the Candidate’s Forum on Wednesday, March 27th. Your submitted questions will shape the candidate discussion at the Candidate Forum!
Three (3) At-Large positions will be filled by community-minded Lakewood neighbors who will each serve three years. These volunteers will devote time and energy as members of the 9-member board that guides the projects, programs, services, and financial oversight vital to maintaining and enhancing our Lakewood community. This board serves as the Board of Directors for both the Lakewood Property Owners Association and the Lakewood Holding Company (golf course). All Lakewood property owners in good standing can vote for three candidates to represent them on the Lakewood Board of Directors. Electronic voting will begin Tuesday April 2 through Monday, April 8. Voting will be tabulated and reported by Votenow.com.
Following the Candidate Meet & Greet, the March 27 Candidates Forum (also taking place at 7 PM at the Lakewood Oaks Clubhouse)
will be an opportunity to hear from each candidate prior to voting. Candidates will introduce themselves, sharing work and career focus, civic or professional board leadership experience, and previous Lakewood committee and/or activity involvement. Introductions will be followed by the Question & Answer component, allowing us to hear each candidate’s ideas and suggestions relevant to the important issues and opportunities facing our Lakewood community today and in the future. The Candidates Forum is an excellent opportunity to get to know your potential board members, and to hear how they would address issues of interest and concern to you, our Lakewood residents.
Please submit your questions to the Election Committee no later than March 20, 2024: lpoaelectioncommittee@gmail.com
The Lakewood Election Committee will be receiving your questions through lpoaelectioncommittee@gmail.com. Please submit your questions by March 20th in order for them to be considered. All collected questions will be organized and presented by a moderator in a format that ensures the forum flows smoothly. Questions will not be taken from the floor the night of the event. The candidates are eager to hear what is on the mind of our Lakewood residents. Submit your questions and plan to attend!

Lakewood Garden Club Offering School Grants
Reading, writing, arithmetic. It seemed so simple fifty years ago. While the basics are vital, today we all want our kids and grandchildren to have a rich, broad challenging school experience that ignites a lifelong curiosity for learning. Enriching the K-12 school curriculum with field trips, hands-on activities, technology, and project-based learning maximizes the learning potential of children of all ages and abilities. Enrichment often involves creative projects that complement and extend the basic classroom curriculum and strengthens learning in all subject areas—math, art, history, literature, music, and science.
The problem is that most public schools do not have ‘deep pockets’ when it comes to funding enrichment activities. Often teachers just need a little extra cash to buy supplies and materials for their enrichment ideas. Sometimes dreams need ‘big bucks.’
Hello, grants.
Teachers may turn to funding from state and federal government, large corporations, and local clubs and organizations for supplemental funding. School grants are dollars allocated to outcomes-based projects that support and enhance learning. Grant awards can be as small as $50; others may provide hundreds of thousands of dollars to a school project. Grants are competitive, and winning a grant is an affirmation of both the project idea and the quality of the proposal.
Writing a major grant proposal can be daunting and takes enormous time. Teachers are busy planning lessons, grading papers, nurturing students.
Annalisa Stonner, a teacher at Delta Woods Middle School, and a Lakewood resident, is integrally involved in enrichment learning. STRETCH, or Students Reaching Excellence Through Challenge, is a BSSD program that helps meet state standards and supports STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curricula.
Working with a team of students and her science colleagues at Delta Woods, Annalisa helped students shape a STRETCH project and submitted it to Burns & McDonnell Engineers ‘Battle of the Brains’ grant competition. The project “ElecroMAGNIFICENT! A Journey Through the Electromagnetic Spectrum,” will teach middle school students about the electromagnetic spectrum—from visible light to x-rays, ultraviolet rays, infrared radiation, microwaves, lasers, etc. Not only was this project selected for funding from a pool of 740 applications, it won the grand-prize of $50,000, and will be created as a hands-on exhibit at Union Station’s Science City! Huge congratulations to Ms. Stonner and Delta Woods Middle School, and grateful kudos to Burns & McDonnell for their promotion and support of enrichment learning.
Hello, Lakewood Garden Club.
While we cannot compete with big corporate grants, Lakewood Garden Club has been offering student scholarships and K-12 classroom grants to local students and schools for over 20 years. Successful applications have focused on the natural sciences, horticulture, landscaping, floral design, and environmental health.
Since 2000, LGC has awarded over $60,000 in grants and student scholarships. Club members have worked diligently on fundraising projects—Christmas poinsettia sales for many years, and most recently, the Lakewood Garden Club Auction Gala to accomplish this goal. Thanks to those who have worked on these fundraisers and to all who have supported and contributed to these projects. In 2024, the LGC funds will all go toward making five (5) $500 classroom grants available to school projects that promote nature and science or environmental sustainability. Grant applications will be emailed to teachers and principals of eligible schools by February 20, 2024, and must be submitted by March 31, 2024.
Eligible schools this year include:
• Our Lady of the Presentation Elementary
• Chapel Woods Elementary
• Hazel Grove Elementary
• Delta Woods Middle School
• Bernard Campbell Middle School
• Lee’s Summit North High School
• Blue springs South High School
• St. Michael the Archangel High School
We are asking our Lakewood homeowners to encourage eligible teachers and schools to apply for these grants. $500 can go a long way toward bringing a classroom project to fruition and help energize a room full of curious students. Annalisa Stonner encourages teachers to apply for these grants. “Take the dream and work with others to bring the dream to reality.”
Who knows? There may be a student right here in Lakewood who will be inspired by a science project today that leads to solving a world environmental issue tomorrow.
it's ID renewal year!
Did you know...It’s ID renewal year in Lakewood?
We will have approximately 2000 Lakewood Residents who are due for an ID renewal—therefore, we want to make this process as smooth as possible for you and our office staff. A valid, up to date Lakewood ID is required in order to have access to the amenities like the pools, docks, snack bar, etc.
Please take a moment to read the requirements and be prepared ahead of time!
• ID cards are $5.00 each and can be charged to your Lakewood Account! Cash and checks are also accepted.
• Before any IDs can be issued, the owner of the property is required to fill out an updated Resident Information Form, on site at the LPOA offices between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
• Anyone living in the property that will be getting an ID is required to be listed on the updated Resident Information Form. Even if nothing has changed in your household, this form MUST be filled out and only by the Owner of the property.
Once the form has been filled out, the occupants can come up any time after that and get their picture taken and their ID printed. So feel free to come up and fill out your Resident Information form as soon as possible and we will have everything in the systems ahead of time.
Beginning May 1, 2024 through July 31, 2024, we will have extended hours on Wednesdays until 7:00 p.m. in order to accomodate those who cannot come during our normal business hours (8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.). This process can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, so please be aware of the time frame.
Property owners DO NOT have to renew their Lakewood ID card.
A Property Owner is the person or person(s) that are listed as the Grantee on the Deed of the property that is recorded by Jackson County.
All Occupants that are 6 years of age or older will have to renew their ID card, as they have expired as of December 31, 2023. An Occupant is any person living in the Lakewood property, and IS NOT an owner.
All Occupants 21 years and older, living in a Lakewood residence that they do not own, will need to provide proof of residency by showing the address on their driver’s license matching the property address of the Lakewood residence they live in.
As always, if you have questions regarding the ID renewal process, you can always call the Main Office at 816-373-4326 or stop in!
