The Ripples // April 2021
April From the General Manager, Mark Reid
I must admit I have a heightened appreciation for green grass, leaves on trees and sunshine this year. Maybe it was the frigid February and cold rainy March. Maybe it was the long, frustrating pandemic. I do know that we are returning to normal, and it feels great. With vaccinations on the rise, we know some sectors of the economy are going into overdrive in the near future. Vacation travel will see a anticipated demand, especially for those who have vaccination cards, which will limit availability and increase prices for rooms, airfare and rental cars. Home buying continues to be a sellers’ market due to high demand and low inventories. Food and Beverage is seeing the results of pent-up demand for the remaining restaurants that did not close during the pandemic. Gas prices are on the rise, and we may be shocked at how high they get this summer. This year Lakewood remains, as it was last summer, a fabulous place to “Staycation” with the family to enjoy swimming, boating, golf, food and beverage, long walks around the lakes or watching the kids play in the park. We have seen a steady increase in patronage at the Argyle and in the Pub. Our carry out business has grown significantly, as more and more members have become familiar with our menu items and choose to call in and pick up when time doesn’t allow for a night out. Our Friday and Saturday nights are very popular, and I do recommend making reservations in advance to guarantee your table. As many of you have noticed, we are doing some theme weeks this year. Mardi Gras week featured Cajun fare and was very popular. I can attest that the gumbo was fantastic. Additionally, Chef Molly serves nightly special dishes that she creates based on availability of fresh herbs, vegetables and market select proteins. As we return to normal, not a new normal, the same normal we have enjoyed for years and years, Lakewood continues to be the place to ‘live’ and we are better than ever. Enjoy!

From the Boardroom Lakewood Property Owners Association
Kathleen Heydon, Board President Our Association has five residents that wish to serve their community by being on the LPOA/LHC Board of Directors. We have three positions open on the Board, so there will be an election. Electronic voting starts Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. Please exercise your right to vote. Your vote designates who will be responsible for carrying out the rules, covenants, and by-laws of this community among other vital roles. This is what I have learned being on the Board for seven years: 1. Be willing to dig into the position, committing time to read the governing documents and all information provided to the Board and ask questions. There can be considerable time and homework involved. 2. Willing to be consistent on enforcement of rules, regulations, by-laws, and covenants, even when you need to make a decision that goes against a neighbor or best friend. You will make unpopular decisions, but you cannot exhibit favoritism. 3. Willing to volunteer time on community issues without monetary compensation. 4. Willing to put the communities best interest FIRST, over and above any personal interest; you cannot be self-serving. 5. Understand the Board speaks as one, even if you don’t agree with the decision. 6. Your fiduciary responsibility is of the utmost importance. 7. Don’t take comments, emails, and social media personally. A thick skin is required because, with almost any decision, there is the other side of the coin that upsets a resident. 8. Act with decorum in times of chaos by being respectful to residents and other Board Members. 9. At all times, be invested in the wellbeing of all aspects of this community. 10. Take pride in the fact you are looking after your community and helping to maintain and increase property values. I look forward to working with three new board members in the very near future.

Rick & Kathy Scaletty Lakewood Artist Exhibit Written by Patti Browder
During the months of March and April, The Argyle Gallery has featured a third exhibit by underwater photographer, Rick Scaletty, and a premier exhibit of a few watercolor paintings by his wife, Kathy.
imagine any of Rick’s electric-colored photos on the walls of lake-themed décor in Lakewood homes. As a bonus to buying a photograph, you will know all proceeds from his art is donated to ocean conservation.
In his past Lakewood exhibits, Rick told us how his underwater photography evolved into a lifetime project to save the oceans and sea life.
After retiring as a Nurse Educator from Research College of Nursing several years ago, Kathy now has the time to pursue her own creativity in a way she has always wanted. While Kathy and Rick spent some of their winter months in their RV in Tucson, Arizona, Kathy started dabbling in watercolor with local artists in the park and taking online watercolor classes with Geoff Kersey, an English artist.
Rick Scaletty started scuba diving as a hobby in 1986. Amazed not only with the beauty of sea life, but also how the survival of so many sea creatures depend on their symbiotic relationships, it became his passion to capture these special moments in the water with a camera. Since Rick first exhibited in our gallery, his scuba diving trips to magic underwater places have been on hold due to the pandemic. He looks forward to resuming his diving trips soon.
In his environmental activist role, Rick uses his underwater images to show the beauty of the underwater world that is rapidly disappearing. He loves sharing slides of his photos with schools and clubs. His hope is that those who see his art learn to appreciate the significance of our natural world and become better stewards of our planet. It’s easy to
She "looks forward to growing and evolving" this new way of capturing her experiences in paint. This will be her first exhibit and, although she is happy to share her talent with Lakewood, her paintings are for display only. Rick and his wife, Kathy, have been enjoying life in Lakewood since 1985. They raised two daughters and look forward to sharing fun at the lake with their first grandson, two months old. They treasure the many friends they have made here, enjoy getting out on the lake, and taking yoga classes with their neighbors. Stop by The Argyle Gallery and view the talented watercolor works of Kathy Scaletty and unique underwater photography of Rick Scaletty. Stay for dinner and spend an evening dining in the company of other Lakewood souls who appreciate art and great food.

2. Address: 316 NE Dartmore Court, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 3. How long in Lakewood? 3 plus years. Moved in Aug. 2017
4. Board members serve on both the LPOA and LHC Boards. Please list your involvement, if any, with either organization. I do not have any current significant involvement with either organization.
4. Board members serve on both the LPOA and LHC Boards. Please list your involvement, if any, with either organization. None.
5. Describe any training, education and/or experiences that you can bring to the Board. I have lived in homes overseen/governed by homeowners associations most all my life. My husband served on our apartment board for many years; I was privy to the dynamics and legal requirements of the board through his service.
5. Describe any training, education and/or experiences that you can bring to the Board. Background in leadership, working with citizen groups, and building common agreements. Extensive experience working with environmental management organizations. 40 plus years in forestry and natural resources, including water management.
I have a degree in social work; I am, by profession, neutral and trained to navigate many types of personalities. I was the co-chair of my son’s school board for one year and a board member for one year; we dealt with legal, human resources, budgeting, and facilities issues. I have worked in non-profit organizations for most of my professional life and am familiar with budgets, audits, and strategic planning. I consider myself a flexible problem-solver who could bring new, creative ideas to the LPOA while also recognizing the wealth of neighborhood history and pride of neighbors who have lived here many years. This past year, I successfully organized a Lakewood-based community supported agriculture farm share and was happy to be able to meet many fellow neighbors and learn more about the community’s dynamics. I am also a member of the Lakewood Mom’s Club.
6. What was your motivation for becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors? I highly value living in Lakewood; we are so fortunate to live here. I want to contribute toward being able to maintain our quality of life.
6. What was your motivation for becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors? It is important to me to be involved in what matters most to me and my family – and at the top of that list is my immediate neighborhood. I want to help ensure the LPOA’s activities are well-communicated and inclusive. I have had the opportunity to get to know many people in Lakewood over the last year, and I am friends with people who have lived here for 30 years, as well as people who moved here six months ago. As a newer resident, I also want to be a welcoming ear to newer homeowners so they feel like they are part of the community and can be active in a way that matches their interests and talents.
9. Please tell anything else about yourself that you would like your neighbors to know. Honored to be considered.
7. What impression would you like potential homeowners to receive when visiting Lakewood, and what are your suggestions to achieve those goals? A beautiful place to live where all are welcome. A great place to raise kids. 8. What do you hope to accomplish over your 3 year term? Continue on the legacy of Lakewood being a wonderful place to be where each family can make their dreams come true.
7. What impression would you like potential homeowners to receive when visiting Lakewood, and what are your suggestions to achieve those goals? I would like potential homeowners to see Lakewood as an inclusive community, one where many voices have the opportunity to be heard, and where the rules and protocols in place to uphold regulations or to initiate change are clear. I hope they see Lakewood as a place where people take pride in their community, as well as take personal responsibility for maintaining and advancing it. We do not live in a neighborhood immune from local and national trends, voices, and change. I would hope that potential residents would see Lakewood as a welcoming place, a safe place for people of all ages and backgrounds, and, of course, quite a place to live during the summer (!). 8. What do you hope to accomplish over your 3 year term? I’d like to take a look at the neighborhood’s needs and wants for communicating Board discussions, voting, and policy changes. For those who are passionate about certain areas, I want to empower neighbors to make substantive change or be creative in the neighborhood’s activities and priorities. I hope to create opportunities to engage in mutual respect and neighborhood-building. I’d love to ensure that our youth continue to be engaged in local jobs, volunteer work, and community involvement. My goal would be to promote equity and inclusivity in the Board’s activities. 9. Please tell anything else about yourself that you would like your neighbors to know. I grew up outside of Greenwood, and I played on the Lakewood golf course many times as part of the Lee’s Summit golf team (more years ago than I’d like to admit!). I moved back to Lee’s Summit recently with my husband, two year old, and seven year old, and we are thrilled with the decision to join the neighborhood.

4. Board members serve on both the LPOA and LHC Boards. Please list your involvement, if any, with either organization. I served as President of the LPOA/LHC Board and previously on the Appeals Committee. Beyond Lakewood, I’ve held numerous leadership positions at my law firm and other legal and community organizations including acting as president of the HOA of my former neighborhood. 5. Describe any training, education and/or experiences that you can bring to the Board. I obtained a BA in Psychology and then proceeded to obtain my JD in Law, both from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. I have been practicing law in Missouri, Kansas and multiple federal courts for nearly 30 years. I am a partner with Kutak Rock where I practice commercial litigation and mediation. As a litigator, I apply considered, critical thinking to develop complex strategies for my clients that find themselves in financially challenging disputes. I’ve tried over 30 jury trials, mostly in the Kansas City area. I believe I have a talent at reaching people and explaining complex matters in an easily understood manner. As a mediator, I assist in guiding opposing parties to reach a mutually acceptable solution to their disagreements. Working in this role has provided me with some of the most satisfying moments in my career. In many of the mediations I’ve handled, the parties told me up front there was no way the case would reach a set tlement. But, nevertheless, I’ve assisted many of these parties to find out of the box solutions to their dispute. I believe the specialized skills I have developed to be successful in each of these professional roles can be directly applied as Board Member working for the benefit of all the members of the LPOA. 6. What was your motivation for becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors? My wife Sherrie and I raised three children in Lakewood. We were a Lakewood Laser’s family for a total of 10 years, and we loved every moment. Of all the activities our kids have participated in over the years, swim team was our all-time favorite because all three were on the same team and it allowed parents to play a big an active role in volunteering. So, it was truly a family activity for us and this made it very special. This is also where so many lifelong friendships started for us all. We aren’t directly on the lake, but the leisure dock down the street has provided countless hours of family fun. There are so many more things we’ve truly enjoyed about our life in Lakewood, including boating, swimming, the restaurants, holiday activities, fireworks, concerts on the rock, tennis, basketball, as well as an occasional round of golf. The bottom line is - I love Lakewood and I want to do my part to ensure it remains Jackson County’s most desired neighborhood for generations of families to come. I understand there will be difficult decisions ahead regarding the LPOA’s financial future. I want to be a part of forming solutions that benefit our property values, maintain our amenities and bring our neighbors together, while being extremely fair and financially responsible. 7. What impression would you like potential homeowners to receive when visiting Lakewood, and what are your suggestions to achieve those goals? That Lakewood offers a truly unique lifestyle opportunity. There are hundreds of neighborhoods in Jackson County and surrounding areas, but there is only one that provides its residents as much as Lakewood. It seems the list of amenities and activities continues to grow every year, and this is what it takes to remain on top. Although I am not an avid golfer, I believe Lakewood should always remain a golfcourse community, as it is possibly the most important differentiating factor for Lakewood.

4. Board members serve on both the LPOA and LHC Boards. Please list your involvement, if any, with either organization. I have been a Board member for LHC and LPOA from 2018-2021. I have been the Treasurer of the LPOA/LHC Board from 2019-2021. I have also attended Board Meetings throughout my 25 years as a resident of Lakewood. 5. Describe any training, education and/or experiences that you can bring to the Board. I am a native of the Kansas City area, and I hold a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. I am the Chief Financial Officer for a local aerospace company based in Lee’s Summit with approximately 60 employees. In my role with the company, I oversee Operations, Accounting and Finance, Customer Service, Systems and IT, Human Resources and legal matters. I am very proud that our company is an essential supplier to the U.S. military. During 2020 and 2021, we provided critical support products and services to the U.S. warfighter where we didn’t miss a single delivery or commitment. I have over 30 years of experience working in fast paced, dynamic financial environments for small, medium and Fortune 500 companies. In 2013, I was named CFO of the Year Small Business Category by the Kansas City Business Journal. With my career positions, I have vast board level interaction and experience. I have also served on the boards of local organizations including the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce. I keep involved with the local community by working with Summit Technology Academy and the Missouri Innovation Campus, as well as the Blue Springs School District and Lee’s Summit R7 School District, where our company works with the youth in the community by providing STEM internships for students. This work has also included interns from many area Universities including MU, KU, K-State, Missouri S&T and many others. 6. What was your motivation for becoming a candidate for the Board of Directors? I believe Lakewood is one of the best communities in Kansas City, and probably one of the best in the state. Lakewood continues to be the most desired neighborhood in Eastern Jackson County. The lack of available homes for sale in this neighborhood is a testament to this statement. In recent years, I have watched our neighborhood go through dramatic and controversial challenges, but through proactive planning and diligent attention to our financial situation, Lakewood continues to move in positive directions. 7. What impression would you like potential homeowners to receive when visiting Lakewood, and what are your suggestions to achieve those goals? Lakewood is a rare jewel of a neighborhood with both a private golf course and recreational lakes (one of only a couple in the KC area and handful in the state). It’s also a great value, with houses in many price ranges and very affordable homeowners’ dues. It also has a wonderful family atmosphere that makes it THE neighborhood everyone in Eastern Jackson County wants to call home. Lakewood gives a wide range of people the chance to live in an upscale community. 8. What do you hope to accomplish over your 3-year term? I have chosen to run for a second term on the Board because I believe we need to keep the plan moving forward to guarantee our neighborhood remains a beautiful place to live, as well as a wonderful investment for its residents. I bring to the Board close to 30 years of finance and accounting background with a strong focus on financial statements, accountability and best practices. I believe good communication and full disclosure of information create a positive environment of transparency.
8. What do you hope to accomplish over your 3-year term? I fully expect challenges to present themselves over the next three years. I am committed to addressing these challenges with the same fervor and skill that I provide to my clients and customers.
I will work to keep Lakewood a destination community for people that want to live in a beautiful, family neighborhood. We can do this by keeping property values high, amenities well maintained and a beautiful lake, golf course, tennis courts, pools and common areas as places families can enjoy their recreational time.
9. Please tell anything else about yourself that you would like your neighbors to know. This is our neighborhood. This is our LPOA. Everyone that lives here is here by choice. We chose to live in this community. It is the community that deserves to be not only protected but also enhanced whenever possible. That happens by making smart, forward thinking decisions for the good of the community. Personal agendas that don’t promote the community and the common good and have no place on the Board of our LPOA. If you elect me, you have my assurance that I will keep these ideals at the forefront of my decisions.
9. Please tell anything else about yourself that you would like your neighbors to know. I have been married to my high-school sweetheart, Melinda, for over 25 years and have two children, Lucy and Luke. Lucy is a Dean’s List student at Missouri State studying Accounting, and Luke is a senior honors student at Blue Springs South High School. We have been actively involved with Boy Scout Troop 42 here in Lee’s Summit, where my son achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this year. My family is very involved in the community, and we support many charitable organizations in KC. Both of my children have also had the opportunity to work as summer staff members for LPOA. Like many Lakewood residents, we have been lucky enough to enjoy several different homes in Lakewood. Over the years, we have enjoyed all the amenities of Lakewood including the golf course, the lakes, swim teams, fishing, the pools and many others. I can think of no better community to raise a family.
