The Ripples // May 2021

May

From the General Manager, Mark Reid The Annual Meeting for the Lakewood Property Owners Association and the Lakewood Holding Company was held on April 15, 2021. The Annual Report can be viewed on the lpoa.com website. We are pleased that both companies are in good financial condition, and both companies have a good outlook for 2021. Years of planning and staying on plan have got us to this moment where we are current and relevant and financially strong enough to weather adverse cyclical events like recession or pandemic. We have ordered the new replacement docks for the West Lake Marina. Docks ‘Q’, ‘R’, ‘S’ and ‘W’ will be installed to the existing ramp and landing with the gate in order to complete the process of replacing aged docks with new docks that incorporate current standards for stainless steel cable and winch stabilization and proper walking surface with 24” square precast concrete blocks. The old docks used a telescoping series of vertical steel pipes to stabilize the dock. This method of dock stabilization has been problematic for many years due to the high winds we experience here on the summit. As the new docks have a forty to fifty-year lifecycle, the Association will not have to revisit this issue for a long time. We will complete the process of procuring the East Lake replacement docks for ‘D’, ‘E’ and ‘F’ next month. Our current estimate is that the West Lake docks will be installed in the last half of October and we are shooting for the East Lake Docks to be installed in November. We are aware of the shortages of essential items like dimensional lumber and plastic resin that is required to cast the floatation capsules. Our Communications Department Manager, Kathy Hoff, has announced her retirement. I have very much enjoyed Kathy being part of our Lakewood team and her fine work in producing a quality Ripples Magazine and ClubLife Magazine, along with enhancing our community communications. We all wish her the best of days as she enjoys her wonderful new retirement lifestyle. We are pleased to announce that Rachel Yaros has been hired to continue this good work and enhance our capabilities through her degree in Marketing and Advertising promotion and graphic design. Rachel will introduce herself in the June Ripples. On behalf of all of the Lakewood Staff, we wish all our awesome Lakewood moms a wonderful Mother’s Day. Enjoy!

Board of Directors’ Meeting

I want to welcome our new Board Member, Debbie Stalnaker. I am excited she has agreed to join our Board and trust you feel the same way. I anticipate her skills and experience will be an asset to our Board. Thank you, Larry Fields and Dave Petet, for being willing to volunteer your valuable time for another three years. To our outgoing Board Member, Dwayne Saucier, I want to express my gratitude for your volunteer service. Board service is a tough volunteer role. Dwayne took on the Board duties with dedication, grace, and seriousness. He will be missed. I don’t want to forget to mention Beth Cory and Tom Schmidt for their desire to share with this association their time and talents. Thank you, both. I have used this quote by Elizabeth Andrews many times because I believe it to be so true. “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.”

Mike Lewis Lakewood Artist Exhibit Written by Patti Browder

During the months of May and June, come by and revisit the photography of our talented neighbor, Mike Lewis, in the Argyle Gallery.

home to look through past images. He focused on learning new post-production techniques and experimenting with those new ideas to enhance the earlier photos.

We have enjoyed Mike’s photos several times in Lakewood, beginning with the first Lakewood Art Show in 2009.

While looking over old images, Mike says he came to realize how much his background as a journalist has influenced his craft. When he started his first job out of college at WIBW TV in Topeka, he was surprised to find, not only would he be writing copy for newscasts, but also taking videos to go with the stories. They handed him his first 16mm movie camera and Mike got an extended crash course in capturing the moment and telling a story with pictures. Mike eventually moved into other non-photographic jobs in the newsroom; but he says his early immersion in photo journalism is reflected in images which are straightforward and, hopefully, capture an emotion, and suggest a story.

Mike's most recent exhibit in the Argyle Gallery was a travel photo journal from Cuba. The colorful photos captured the uniqueness of the country and its people, as well as a glimpse of the country's rich history. Mike has been a member of Summit Art for more than a decade and says the knowledge and feedback from its members continue to make his photography better. An “enjoyable and socially distanced” opportunity to practice his hobby came this past April. Summit Art sponsored what is called a Plein Aire event, primarily for painters, who are given an allotted amount of time to come to a site and paint what they see. Summit Art photographers were given access to the Crestview Dairy Event Venue ahead of time and got to roam the 31 acres to capture images which were displayed during the April event. During the past year, Mike took advantage of the time at
