The Ripples // July 2021

July

From the General Manager, Mark Reid Progress in Lakewood takes many forms. One of the biggest improvements you will see this year will be courtesy of the City of Lee’s Summit. For the entirety of the 13 years that I have been affiliated with the Association, as well as many years before that, I have heard the annual conversation about lighting Lakewood Boulevard. It’s finally happening this year! I’m sure many of you have seen all the orange marks on the right of way as well as many utility flags and locating stakes. The new LED lighting on new poles will be located along Lakewood Boulevard starting at Lee’s Summit Road and ending at N.E. Anderson Road after the Island split. This is not an easy project by any means, as the electrical conduit is being bored in under the right of way, roadway, and across the East and West Dams. This area has a high amount of sub surface rock so the process is a little slow at times. Once the lighting gets to the island, just east of Pebble Beach Rd., it will be installed on both sides of the island to provide lighting for west bound and east bound Lakewood Boulevard. This will culminate in a single light pole at the eastern tip of the island beyond the flagpole. This long awaited project is truly appreciated as it will provide enhanced driving and pedestrian safety throughout the nighttime hours. Thank you in advance to the hardworking City Staff and City Council as well as the Contractor. The coordination and communication between City, Contractor and Lakewood and Lakewood Oaks Staff has been outstanding. We are excited about getting to the finish line when the old light poles, on the dams, are removed and the new ones are turned on and illuminate Lakewood Boulevard at last. One constant advocate of this project was our dear friend and the original Lakewood General Manager in 1976 as well as the original GM for the Lakewood Oaks Golf Club in 1978, Mr. Jay Copeland. With Jay’s passing this year, he will not get to see the finished product, but as a recipient of the Association’s “Lifetime Achievement Award”, for all that Jay did to help improve the Lakewood community since 1973, it was endearing to all of us that Jay knew the project was heading to completion at the time of his passing.

New to Lakewood

Ms. Rachel Yaros joins our LPOA Team as a shared position between the Lakewood Property Owners Association and The Lakewood Oaks Country Club. She will be managing all design and communication efforts. Yaros’ background in visual graphics design and branding will allow us to enhance our member communication, as well as further our overall presentation to our residents and stakeholders. We are happy to have her on the team!

From the Boardroom Lakewood Property Owners Association

Kathleen Heydon, Board President

Board of Directors’ Meeting Actions taken June 10, 2021

We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United State of America as an independent nation. This nation would not be free without all our Veterans, Wounded Warriors, those who gave their lives, along with our current Military personnel. I would like to thank all Military personnel serving today and Veterans that have served in the past for our United States of America. Thank you to our Wounded Warriors and those who bravely gave their lives, so that we may have our freedom on this Independence Day. Because of you, we are able to enjoy our community and all it has to offer. “Thank you” just doesn’t seem like enough to say but I have no other words to express my gratitude. I hope Lakewood has a safe, fun 4th of July full of laughter, fireworks, and love. Dr. Bruno Zwerenz, M.D. Lakewood Artist Exhibit We welcome Dr. Bruno Zwerenz, M.D. back to the Argyle Gallery. Having displayed his art in 2019, Dr. Zwerenz is happy to share his pieces once again. Dr. Zwerenz grew up in Frankfort, Germany and could be found skiing in the Tatra Mountains of Slovakia and apprenticing with an old-styled German Professor in the art of painting. He made his way to the United States and was immediately drafted into the U.S. military where he was based back in his home town, Frankfort, Germany. Education was important to Bruno and he started taking classes while drafted through the University of Maryland and University of Illinois abroad.

"Go! Go with your thoughts and feelings and try to express them on screens or on a canvas. What you create will never be taken away." Having studied psychology, Dr. Zwerenz soon after pursued post-grad when he was accepted into University of Missouri, School of Medicine. Having returned from

14

The Ripples // July 2021

the military, Dr. Zwerenz received his M.D. and became a certified Psychiatrist. He channeled his creativity learned early in life and painted throughout Medical School which was a nice break from rigorous studying. Dr. Zwerenz’s approach to painting is self-guided by his own stream of conscious in the moment. He is able to expresses his present internal state through landscapes that are realistic and/ or are made up scenarios. All of his paintings can tell as much of a story as the viewer wants to perceive. More recently, abstract techniques have taken over Dr. Zwerenz’s pieces, some of which are inspired by German poetry. What intrigues Dr. Zwerenz the most about art is how subjective the medium can be. “I love the challenge of understanding and interpreting art. I want to give that as a gift to others as they enjoy my paintings.” When asked what advice Bruno would give to young artists he says, “Go! Go with your thoughts and feelings and try to express them on screens or on a canvas. What you create will never be taken away.”
