July
From the General Manager, Mark Reid A lot of our planning and work is coming to fruition in July. The new East Lake Play Park is now ready for tons of fun. Although the heat was almost unbearable during some of the construction stages, I and the construction crew were touched by the random act of kindness by an unknown family who brought cold beverages and chocolate chip cookies to the site for the workers with the a note “Thank you for building our play park”. Whoever you are, you represent the best of Lakewood. We have finished the East Lake Marina Renovation. This is the end of the planned improvements for the East and West Marinas under a program that was approved 3 years ago and prior to the pandemic. We also did additional maintenance while the Tiger Docks crew was here and installed Stainless Steel Cables to the rest of the docks that had previously installed galvanized steel cables. Over the past year, the old cables, after years of corrosion and wear, started snapping in the high winds that Lee’s Summit experiences from time to time. We are extremely pleased that we now have reliable anchorage and do not have to fight to hold the docks in place when a cable snaps. We are finishing the deforestation and removal of all woody vegetation from the shoulders of the West Lake Dam and the shoulders and toe of the East Lake Dam. This is in compliance with a directive from Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Dam Safety Division. When you look at the Dams now, It looks more like they did when they were new 50 years ago. We are finishing the plans for the East Lake Pool Parking lot expansion. This will be a fall project so we don’t disrupt the existing parking any more this season. I look forward to hearing from membership during this years “Lakewood Improvement Program” request submittals. The form can be found at lpoa.com and must be completed and returned by July 31. This is a fantastic way to hear from the members as to what they want to see for Lakewood in the future. Enjoy your amenities this summer and remember to visit the Argyle for a wonderful dining experience.

May Community Service Report
From the Boardroom
Terry White, Board President I am writing this on June 4. By the time you read it summer in Lakewood will be well under way. I hope by now all of you have had the opportunity to enjoy some aspect of summer in Lakewood. It is the busiest time for two of our valuable amenities, the lakes and the pools. Both provide enjoyment and entertainment for hundreds of Lakewood families and their guests. Along with amenity privilege comes the responsibility each of us must share to keep our amenities enjoyable for all. Here are some tips that will help us all. If you are on the lake in your own boat or rent an LPOA pontoon, idle speed should be used if you are within 100 feet of a pleasure dock, paying particular attention to the area if there are swimmers. Idle speed is required when going through the channel between the two lakes, and towing kids is not permitted. Always think safety when a boat is moving. Passengers should not sit on the front of the boat with legs dangling. We see this so often with kids. It just takes one slip for a bad situation. The same is true for people standing on a hard top. Use your navigation lights ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise. Head lights are not navigation lights. They are only to be used for docking. If you are stationary after dark, you must have an anchor light to be visible to other boaters. If your watercraft does not have lights you should not be on the water after dark, for your safety and for the boats that cannot see you. Please remember this for our two evening lake events, 4th of July and Concert on the Rock. If your boat has been on another body of water, it must be entirely washed with 140 degree water and dry before returning to our lake. This includes any life jackets, noodles, or anything else that has been in another body of water. This protects us from zebra mussels. Check with LPOA for details. Lakewood has 3 pools. Please remind your children and guests to be respectful of the lifeguard staff and follow all posted rules. These are in place for your safety and the

SUMMER ART EXHIBIT IN THE ARGYLE Written by Patti Browder
SHEILA BORNE BUNDY
Sheila Borne Bundy returns to the Argyle Gallery during the months of July and August to exhibit her oil paintings. Sheila and her husband Mark have lived in Lakewood since 1986 and she has been painting since then. Today, Sheila is retired from her career as an auditor with GEHA. With more time to paint, she usually has up to six or more paintings in process, and paints from 4-6 hours per day. In her home studio, Sheila gets in the creative mood with candlelight and Keith Urban playing softly in the background. Her passion is still life, creating her own subjects from personal collections of different props. Stage One of a painting begins with painting in the “local

He is currently investigating the possibility of placing some of his artwork with a retail chain that specializes in urban, sustainable design. Meanwhile, Dick has expanded
color” of each object; in Stage Two, she begins to fill in the details; and in Stage Three, the paintings come to life with final details and highlights. As each stage requires a drying time, she can decide each day which painting she feels like taking to the next level.
“I’ve learned to love the beauty of the life around me in nature and translate it to canvas.” In 2021, Sheila won First Place “Best in Show Fine Arts” at the Blue Springs Art League Show; and in January 2022, she won Second and Third place “Best of Show Fine Arts.”
his creative talent into learning the skills of art glass, including stained glass design. Studying and adapting new techniques at a glass works studio in Oak Grove, Dick is enjoying this additional outlet to his creativity. Dick is gifted with a special attention to detail and that ability is reflected in every art medium he pursues.
All artists featured in the gallery are Lakewood Residents. If you are an artist, or know someone in Lakewood who might be interested in showing their artistic talent to the community, get in touch with Carole Gray, cjegray@gmail.com; or Sharon Stackelhouse, s.stackelhouse@icloud.com. We are never surprised and always delighted to find new talent in Lakewood. 14

Since 1977, the Lakewood Garden Club has served the community through service and outreach programs. This year, the Scholarship Committee, chaired by Roberta Minor and with the able assistance of Carol Allman, Edie Schmidt and Kaye Vance, has selected two outstanding students from Lee’s Summit North High School to receive $500 scholarships to the schools of their choice. Ashley Paul, our first recipient, is a talented scholarathlete interested in serving elementary age children as a speech pathologist. Excited to make a difference in a meaningful way, Ashley wants a future that will involve helping children. At Rockhurst University she found the right program in “Communication Sciences and Disorders.” As a student at LSN, Ashley has distinguished herself as a skilled tennis player, a cellist in the orchestra, as an officer on the Student Council and by working in the high school counselling office. All of these activities require hard work, diligence, focus and strong character. Outside of school, Ashley has pursued extra-curricular activities serving others. As a member of Cold Water, Ashley has delivered meals for those in need, participated in trash clean-ups with the Band of Angels, volunteered to teach tennis to middle-school students and joined Kids Country to assist working parents with child care after school. It was by exhibiting common sense, compassion and the ability to work confidentially that Ashley was offered the paid position working in the counselling office. Mindful of the high expenses of attending a private university, Ashley is
doing all she can to offset the cost of her education. Our second recipient is Ella Pierson, a student passionate about saving the environment. Although accepted at the University of Montana’s, Davidson Honor College, Ella has decided to attend Longview Community College before transferring to pursue a major in “Environmental Science and Sustainability.” At Longview she will enter as an A+ Scholarship winner and will study Parks, Tourism & Management with an emphasis on natural resources. As part of this program, Ella will complete 400 volunteer hours with the National Park Service. She is also passionate about photography. At LSN, Ella worked on the yearbook staff and put her hobby to good use. Those who know Ella best, can’t think about her without noting her kind heart, wide-open to animals and children. In the years ahead Ella hopes to learn more about water and resource conservation. Her hope is to influence both the government and large corporations to become more responsible stewards in the conservation of the earth’s resources. It’s therefore no surprise that her goal is to live a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature. As always, the task of identifying Garden Club scholarship winners is difficult. The outstanding academic and personal qualities of Ashley Paul and Ella Pierson make them worthy recipients.
