Creative learning - pass it on! When booking your course place, please consider adding a donation to help fund MAC summer school places for young people with the least opportunity to engage with the charity’s work. Our Creative Camps and Summer Schools are imagination-igniting courses for children and young people aged 6-17. Your donation will help MAC to offer opportunities for learning, fun and friendship during the summer holidays. Welcome

Welcome to our annual courses brochure for September 2019 to July 2020. Midlands Arts Centre is proud to host a wide range of courses, allowing you to try something new, develop an existing talent or spend time doing something creative as a family. Our courses are not formal programmes so there are no exams, no tests and no stress! We want to support anyone and everyone to develop their creative side at their own pace. To fit in with all schedules and paces of life, we offer 3 types of courses:

Short Courses SC If you’re looking to try out something new, or can’t commit 12 weeks of your time, our short courses are for you. See page 18-19 for listings of upcoming short courses. For full details please visit our website. Look out for the Short Course sticker throughout the brochure too!

Holiday Courses These include a range of courses aimed at children, families and young people that take place every school holiday, and can help solve your childcare needs. See page 25, and visit our website for more details. MAC Save-a-Space Scheme You can reserve a space on one of our courses by putting down a £30 deposit. We don’t charge an administration fee or interest amount for this service. All you need to do is pay the outstanding balance 3 weeks prior to the start of that course. Don’t worry, we’ll remind you! If you decide not to go ahead on that course, your deposit will be saved on your account for 6 months so you can spend it on a film, performance or event of your choice.* *After this time your deposit will become a kind donation to MAC to help us in our charitable work connecting everyone with art. Picking The Right Course There are a number of factors that might help you to decide which course is for you. Age Guidance Our courses and workshops have been developed and planned with specific age ranges in mind, so we ask you that keep to those suggested. Experience Levels Beginner

For complete novices, you will develop basic skills and knowledge, and no previous experience is expected.

Beginner/Improver

Suitable for beginners or those with limited or rusty previous experience.

Improver

Develop your existing skills, knowledge and practice, and begin to explore more complex techniques.

Improver/Advanced Perfect for those who still find more complex techniques a bit difficult, and are looking to refine their skills. Advanced

Develop your independent learning and practice, with support and guidance from our tutors and resources. Ideal for those who are confident in their skills, but occasionally appreciate a second pair of eyes to advise.

Family Courses Our family courses are the perfect way to spend some quality time with your children, doing something that you can both enjoy. Accessibility We strive to make all of our courses suitable for people with disabilities, though practical considerations may apply. If you have any questions or specific needs you would like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’ll make adjustments where possible. If you require a carer to provide support to take part in an activity, a complimentary ticket must be booked. MAC is completely wheelchair accessible, and further details about our accessible features and services can be found online or from our Sales and Information team, in various formats. Artist Pass Experienced and confident working alone? Continue your practice independently and develop your artistic skills with access to our workshops and studios beyond scheduled class times. Health, Wellbeing & Individual Music Lessons Fitness These are individual 30 min sessions with the tutor. You will receive 25 mins teaching and the remaining time for arrival and pack up, within the time slot indicated. Our full terms and conditions are always available on our website and are published at our Sales and Information desk. When we make a sale by telephone we are always clear about our terms and conditions. A summary follows: • We do not, under any circumstances, offer a refund either before or during a course. • Exchanges can only be made at the start of the term, if capacity allows. • If an exchange cannot be facilitated, we do not offer a refund. • Any student disrupting learning for others may be asked to leave without refund. • Midlands Arts Centre reserves the right to withdraw particular programmes and to change both the tutor, pricing and make other minor changes to the content without prior warning. • Where a session is cancelled by MAC (e.g. tutor illness) we will attempt to reschedule that session (this may fall outside of the published term dates). • Where a session cannot be rescheduled a refund will be given on a pro rata basis.

Prices shown are for standard rates, these are fixed until 20 July 2019 whereafter they may be subject to change. Children’s course fees are already at a concessionary rate. Family course fees cover one adult and one child. The prices shown in brackets for those courses are for an additional adult or child place. MAC’s concession policy will be changing during Autumn 2019, please see the website for details.

Extra Considerations

Visual Arts – we recommend that participants (both adults and children) wear either old clothes or an apron for any visual arts course. The price of materials is included on all visual arts courses except jewellery, stained glass and some specific textile courses (which will be detailed separately). Health, Wellbeing & Fitness courses – please wear comfortable clothing to allow free movement. For yoga courses, participants should bring their own yoga mat. Further details are always included on the course web page.

Holiday Courses Midlands Arts Centre offers a range of courses aimed at children, families and young people that take place every school holiday.

Creative Camps Offer intensive learning experiences across a variety of art forms. They run from 2-5 days, 10am-3pm including a 1-hour lunch break. For ages 6-11 years.

Summer Schools Offer young people the opportunity to learn new skills while working on a creative project. They run from a day to a week. For ages 12-17 years. Image © Adrian Burrows

Children are fully supervised at all times by experienced DBS-checked staff.

Family Courses A perfect opportunity for you and your child to learn more about each other as well as to develop a shared interest in an art form. From a couple of hours to a day. For ages 6-11 years plus parent/carer. Additional children and adults welcome for additional fee.

A dynamic programme of fun one day courses for children and young people aged 6-17.

Early drop off, late pick up We know families have differing needs so we’ve structured optional add-on elements to help busy parents. We offer 4 additional hours of supervised childcare which fit around the course or camp, so that your child’s day runs from 8.30am – 5.30pm (flexible drop-off and collection times within these hours). During these hours we offer further fun activities and entertainment for your child including film-screenings and games, allowing them extra time with their friends. Where To Find Us Midlands Arts Centre is situated only a few minutes from the City Centre. Located in Cannon Hill Park, opposite the County Cricket ground on Edgbaston Road, off Pershore Road (A441) and Bristol Road (A38). MAC is easily accessible using all the major city road routes and is served by a number of buses from the City Centre including 1, 35, 45, 47, 61 and 63. You can find us by walking through Edgbaston Mill or driving along Queens Ride, where there is a large car park and bicycle stands. CONS
