Ebola: A crisis without borders David Thornton News Editor As the Ebola crisis in West Africa continues to spread, it is rapidly becoming apparent that this is a world health issue, reaching far beyond the borders of the three countries primarily afflicted.

Saio Conteh, a 22-year-old Old Dominion University Senior, is one of a handful of international students who originally hails from one of these countries.

Conteh has been active on ODU campus, working with the SGA, student organizations and honor societies to create a symposium to raise awareness about Ebola, and also works with a non-profit organization, Pearls of Wata (“water” in Sierra Leonean dialect), to create care packages for communities and burial parties in Sierra Leone.

“I really feel that when this first happened, before it was a United States issue, people saw it as just a West African issue. No one thought that, just the way it crossed the borders in those West African nations, it could just as easily pass your borders. It’s a public health issue,” Conteh said.

Conteh left her native Sierra Leone permanently in 2008. “That’s the last time I ‘ve seen my mother, my father and my extended family…other than Skype, which manages to get a frozen picture on the screen once in a while,” she said.

She fears for the safety and wellbeing of her family on a regular basis.

“Every time someone calls and says ‘Hey, I have to talk to you,’ I just hope everyone is ok. I expect the worst, but hope for the best,” Conteh said.

From Sept. 19 to 21, the government of Sierra Leone instituted a three-day lockdown, during which no one was allowed to leave their houses, giving workers a chance to go door-to-door and educate households about the threat of Ebola, according to CNN. Conteh’s mother was in one of the households affected by this lockdown.

“I found that very difficult because as always, the poor and unfortunate people suffer the most,” Conteh said.

She explained that people in Sierra Leone eat organically, gathering food to cook for the day every morning. Because of the lockdown, their day to day survival was impeded.

Although governments have repeatedly promised hazard pay, raises and better equipment, the strikes continue.

“It’s a stereotype among West Africans to be a healthcare worker.

So when this whole thing happened, the fact that there are so few health

workers in the affected countries, it hurts me so much,” Conteh said.

She is grateful for intervention from other countries, including the United States, China and the U.K. The United States currently has 565 soldiers West Africa, while the expected number of troops to be deployed stands at 4000, according to NBC News.

They will set up testing and training labs, build medical centers, and train local health care workers in proper procedures and equipment.

“Initially, I know a lot of my fellow countrymen were saying, ‘Why are they sending troops?’ But I understand that not all of the troops in the military are just soldiers who fight,” Conteh said.

“I’m thankful, so grateful, that the U.S. and other countries have been involved in sending people,” she said.

What upsets Conteh most are ignorant comments and memes online about Ebola and West Africa in general. She had to fight to hold her tongue when someone with whom

she went to high school made one of these inflammatory posts.

“His original post was that the only reason that America is exposed to AIDS, Ebola and other diseases is because we allow these ‘disease ridden foreigners’ into our borders,” she said.

“Its just ridiculous to have to deal with all of that… because I stress education on the issues instead,” Conteh said.

Her goal is “resisting the temptation of lashing out in anger and

instead making that positive where you’re creating a moment where you can educate someone on an issue that they clearly know nothing about.“ Through all of this, Conteh’s main concern is her mother. Having emigrated to America so young, Conteh has had to face a number of major life events, like high school graduation, without the presence of her mother.

“With Ebola, it makes it real. I could actually not see my mom ever again,” Conteh said.

ODU fraternity fighting stigma of sexual assault Josh Whitener Staff Writer Fraternities have a national reputation as a haven for college rape and sexual assaults. Several Old Dominion University fraternities are fighting against that stigma while others at ODU remain susceptible to it.

John D. Foubert, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the school of education at the College of William and Mary, and Johnathan T. Newberry and Jerry L. Tatum, who are also affiliated with W&M, wrote a scholarly article addressing the frequency and circumstances surrounding college rape on college campus.

They wrote that “well known statistics such as the ‘one in four’ overview states that two different longitudinal studies have found that fraternity men are three times more likely to commit sexual assault than other college men. Women in sororities are 74 percent more likely to experience rape than other college women, and those who live in the sorority house are over three times as likely to experience rape.”

Despite, or because of, exemplified studies like this one, some fraternities have taken proactive measures to counteract a growing concern among college women that fraternities cultivate sexual assailants. Luke Glenn, president of Phi Kappa Tau, considers the statistics disheartening.

“When I see those statistics I don’t deny them. I know that fraternities are a nesting ground for that kind of activity and that is unfortunately a byproduct of the few ruining it for the many,” Glenn said.

Along with working closely with ODU’s women’s center, Phi Kappa Tau follows the standard set by the Fraternal Information and Programming Group, a national rules set for fraternity members.

Phi Kappa Tau also implements guidelines at their own parties that target the circumstances that could provide an opportunity for a sexual assault.

Sorority life has seen the ugly side of sexual assaults first hand at ODU, with safety being a primary concern for both sorority and fraternity members.

“I know for girls in my sorority, a lot of girls have experienced sexual assault. A couple years ago one of our members was sexually assaulted by an outside [male] visiting Norfolk,” said one sorority member, who for the purposes of the article wished to stay anonymous.

A wary reputation concerning safety for women is an uphill battle for almost all social fraternities across the United States, and at ODU the challenges are no less difficult, and just as important.

“We have not had, in the history of my chapter at Old Dominion, we have not had any sort of incident [involving] rape or sexual misconduct. I can positively hold my head high knowing that we have never had an issue with that and that’s something that I advertise,” Spurlock said.

Congressman Rigell on tuition, loans and the job market

Congressman Scott Rigell spoke openly with the Mace and Crown on Oct. 12 on the major obstacles associated with earning a college degree.

Rigell is the Representative for Virginia’s second congressional district, the nation’s largest military district and the location of ODU. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, college graduates of 2014 graduated with more debt than any other class before them.

Even after adjusting for inflation, college graduates of 2014 had an average loan debt of approximately $33,000. That’s almost twice the average of graduates 20 years before.

There’s no mystery why. The “Great Recession” resulted in decreasing average incomes for Americans, while average tuition prices for American universities have been increasing dramatically for decades.

The College Board’s “Trend in College Pricing 2012” reports that tuition costs for public universities increased 104 percent between 2002

Casey Burnett Staff Writer As of a decision made, but not made, by the Supreme Court last month, same-sex marriages in Virginia are now legal.

Many are thrilled and disbelieving about this turn of events, yet there are those who have merely reaffirmed their opposition.

In the most recent Quinnipiac Poll in March of 2014, 50 percent of Virginians support same-sex marriage while 42 percent oppose it.

On Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, the Supreme Court permitted same-sex marriages to continue in Virginia when it refused to take up a Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals case that overturned the commonwealth’s ban. The landmark case involved former ODU English professor, Tim Bostic.

The commonwealth then immediately recognized the marriages of same-sex couples who had already wed in different states.

“This is a tremendous moment in Virginia history. We will continue to fight discrimination wherever we find it, but today, we celebrate a moment when we move closer to fulfilling the promise of equality ignited centuries ago in Virginia, and so central to the American experience,” said Attorney General Mark Herring in a statement.

People were immediately seeking the opportunity to get marriage licenses and headed to courthouses.

Bostic and his partner, Tony London, were the first couple to receive a marriage license in Norfolk.

Every student would like to know why tuition prices are becoming more and more expensive. The reason is complex but Rigell highlights one culprit in particular: health care.

“The state has been unable, or at least has not, funded higher education, at the levels it has historically.

If you look back at 1970, 1980, and 2000, there’s less money going to institutions like Old Dominion, James Madison and Virginia Tech,” he said.

“If you talk to a state legislator you’ll find that medical costs are taking a greater share of the state budget and putting compression on the areas that are left,” Rigell said.

Health care has been one of the most politically polarizing topics of the last half-decade following the President Obama’s introduction of the Affordable Care Act. “Health care has been elevated and so education has come down,” Rigell said.

Although Rigell didn’t object to the increase in healthcare spending, he expressed his concern that it would impede the mission to make education accessible to every Ameri-

can.

“If you can go to college, go,” Rigell said. “But there needs to be very good career paths for all young adults as they transition into full adulthood.”

Rigell mentioned that one of his own children chose to skip college in favor of learning a trade, a much less expensive and shorter gateway to employment.

Rigell reaffirmed his full commitment to making sure education is accessible to all as he warned his next statement is not the easiest news to hear: “It’s first the responsibility of an adult, including a student, to incur no more debt than he or she can reasonably expect to be able to pay back.

This is not to say that relief should not be provided in some cases,” he said, urging prudence when deciding to take out loans.

“I had to do this in my own college path, I stopped borrowing at some point because I thought: ‘I’m not sure I could pay it back if I borrowed more,’” Rigell said.

He received his associates degree from Brevard Community College before pursuing his bachelor’s from

Mercer University.

When asked if college graduates would be able to do well in the job market the congressman stated that it depended heavily on the degree.

“It’s simple supply and demand. If you are pursuing an education in a field where there is demand... you’ll do better. We, as a nation need to do very well in STEM: science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Rigell said.”

He discussed the growing concern regarding the outsourcing of jobs and oversaturation of the job market by foreign workers.

The U.S. Deptartment of Commerce revealed that American companies reduced domestic labor by 2.9 million jobs, while sending 2.4 million jobs overseas from the year 2000 to 2011.

The reason for outsourcing labor from the U.S. to developing countries is the relatively high cost. Labor cost plays a large role in where companies choose to set up shop and create jobs.

Many wonder how the job market will look in the future if this trend of favoring inexpensive foreign labor over domestic labor continues.

“We are Americans, and I believe it’s in our DNA to believe that we can shape our future, that we are not just a leaf that’s being carried down the stream. Instead we shape the direction of the river,” Rigell said.

He said that to create a robust and sustainable job market, the U.S. must diversify the economy, especially along American shores, where 85 percent are off limits to exploring coastal energy.

Rigell believes that the coastal energy exploration represents an incredible opportunity to not only harvest our own energy but in doing so create a great quantity of jobs in the U.S. “We have the opportunity to create 25,000 jobs locally, right here,” he said.

When asked how the future for college graduates looks, he said, “It all depends entirely on the quality of the decisions we make now as a nation. You will experience the outcomes, good or bad, and I’m hoping, praying, and fighting for good ones so that your generation has wonderful opportunities.”

Same-sex marriage legal in Va.

In addition to Virginia, there are a number of others states that received the legalization of same-sex marriage. They include Utah, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

This legalization also expanded to Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Wyoming and West Virginia.

“The lifting of the gay marriage ban is a validation of sorts. It feels like our government is finally acknowledging our right to love and happiness. It feels like we are finally being viewed as beings that deserve the happiness that comes along with starting a life with the person that we love more than anyone else, regardless of sex,” said ODU OUT President Mikey Fenn in an email.

The right to marry has been an ongoing struggle in the state of Virginia. In 2006 anti-gay forces in Virginia pursued the Marshall- Newman Amendment. This Amendment excluded same-sex marriage from retaining any form of legal family status.

For the first time in American history, the majority of the population can marry who they want.

“Love has no gender,” said ODU sophomore Samantha Evans.

There are many groups who have been involved and worked on marriage equality, such as Equality Virginia, Freedom to Marry, and American Foundation for Equal Rights.

“I am extremely happy to see that the barriers of love are slowly fading, but I’m also sad that the state for lovers had no urgency in this matter,” said ODU junior Mike Steele.

The room seemed cavernous, and far too quiet. The few attendees were clustered around the center aisle, huddled against the back drop of empty seats.

Everyone avoided the front row.

At 8:05, no one else had arrived.

Robert Sarvis shrugged, and began to speak.

That shrug would set the tone for the evening.

Despite underwhelming attendance, Robert Sarvis gamely pitched his candidacy for the United States Senate to a handful of students on Oct. 15.

Sarvis, who unsuccessfully ran for governor last year, is the Libertarian party’s candidate for senate in the upcoming midterm elections.

Perhaps disheartened by the mostly empty room, Sarvis was devoid of passion or energy.

Whether due to inadequate advertising, a deficiency of clarity about the nature of the Libertarian party, or sheer lack of interest, it was clear from the beginning that this trip to ODU was not going to be a game-changer

for his campaign.

It was evident that while he thoroughly believed in his positions on all the issues, he had seen and spoken to far too many of these empty rooms to really believe in his chances of winning.

But then, winning has never really been his goal.

“If you vote for me, we can get to 10 percent [of the vote], which means major party status for the Libertarian party… which means we can get our candidates on the ballot… and hopefully be treated equally in the debates,” Sarvis said.

This is really the main goal of the Libertarian party. Third party candidates are treated as write-ins on the ballots, receive almost no attention from the media and are rarely featured in policy debates.

However, if any party receives more than 10 percent of the vote, they achieve major party status, meaning they must be treated equally alongside their Republican and Democratic rivals.

As such, their strategy tends to revolve around portraying their rivals as having no real differences from one another, and a third party vote as one that actually matters.

He stated that the current regulations on the labor market discourages employers from hiring, prompting them instead to either invest in greater capital or outsource their labor.

“It’s all because we’ve raised the cost of employing people. Make it easier to start business, make it easier to hire people, and just decrease the burden on companies,” Sarvis said.

“We shouldn’t be taxing capital, we shouldn’t be taxing corporate income, we shouldn’t be taxing capital gains because it an inefficient way of raising money. Taxing businesses is a really good way to lower business activity,” he said.

Although he never said the actual words, it’s clear that Sarvis is a parishioner of the Church of Trickle Down Economics.

“If you are taxing corporate income, that gets passed along to consumers in the form of price increases… to the workers in the form of lower wages… to investors and shareholders in the form of lower returns,” Sarvis said.

He finished out with a plea to students to vote, and to encourage others to do the same. “The reason we have bad laws is because [people] don’t vote,” he said.

Dinner with DAKABOOM Grey Hues Staff Writer After a refreshing fall break, SAC hosted “Dinner With Dakaboom” in the North Café. The event brought together a small group of students to enjoy free music, comedy and fine dining.

After meeting in high school in Northern California, Paul Pegla and Ben McLain, decided to combine their witty musical and theatre backgrounds to form the power duo, Dakaboom.

The term began as an inside joke from acting classes that would grow to mean “get awesome.”

McLain and Pegla are self-proclaimed postmodern vaudeville, and the show is an amalgamation of piano arpeggios, improvisation, and new-age humor derived from purposeful awkwardness, subtle misdirection, innuendo, pseudo-personal arguments, quick back-and-forth and plenty of puns.

The show flows as a conversation between two young male roommates that blends together all these elements.

During the show, Mclain said that stand-up isn’t just telling jokes; it

should blend together elements of whatever you’re good at and tell a story.

Dakaboom’s works consists of songs like “Please Don’t Move” where the two of them sit stationary until the audience begins to laugh, and “Friends Like Me” which hilariously genre surfs between generations using beatbox, scatting, hip-hop, opera, swing, doo-wop, falsetto and R&B. They ended their set with a performance of their most popular YouTube video, “50 Theme Songs in Under 5 Minutes” which has accumulated over 67,000 views.

Pegla acknowledged that the group puts more emphasis on the live performances than the recorded material, although they have gained thousands of followers on their social networks, and released an album “Get Awesome” in 2012 on iTunes and Spotify.

For the last year, the duo has been separated, since Pegla has relocated to New York. Currently, theyonly have time to prepare new material while touring.

Nicholas Rayfield Contributing Writer It’s always a great feeling to see something absolutely spectacular come out of your hometown. It makes you even more proud of where you’re from. Turnover is the trophy that the Hampton Roads area is finally starting to hold high enough for everyone else to see.

The four-piece punk rock outfit from Virginia Beach, Va. has just recently returned from a three week headlining tour alongside of Malfunction (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Light Years (Cleveland, OH) in support of their most recent release, “Blue Dream,” available now through Broken Rim Records and Dog Knight Records.

“The tour that we just finished was one of my favorites to date,” said Danny Dempsey, the bass player of the band. “Our very first U.S. tour was with Light Years, so having them come along with us again was great.

Once you tour with a band, it’s very rare that you’ll get to hang out with them again for more than a day or two. Malfunction is way different than both Turnover and Light Years and that played in way better than we ever anticipated. They drew a different crowd every night that may not have usually been as open minded to bands like Turnover or Light Years.

Shef Salahuddin Contributing Writer This past Saturday, the Old Dominion University Out Student Alliance, hosted PrideFest 2014 in the middle of the quads. Being National Month for Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender, or LGBT, it was a day of colors, music and sun.

Right away at the PrideFest I noticed everyone having a blast.There were drag queens, craft making tables and lots of dancing. Everyone was mingling and doing an activity to their liking. I visited the crafts table first and noticed everyone making flags. With many different choices of art materials, such as paint or markers, they were decorating colorful flags to be waved around proudly.

A merchandise table was set up with ODU t-shirts with our school mascot sporting rainbow colors, different colors of sunglasses, and the famous rainbow flag also known as the LGBT pride flag. Paying only $5 I received all of them. My favorite was definitely the shirts they had! The group members were rocking them.

Manning the table was Allan Scroggins, a Senior at ODU. I approached him and immediately we sparked up a conversation about the merchandise and the event overall.

Blue Dream Come True

What’s a band that stays the same forever? Nothing. They end up washing away in the grand scheme of the music industry and soon become overlooked by the bands that keep pushing forward. The release of “Blue Dream” proves that Turnover is a band that is willing to keep progressing. Every release they’ve offered to their fans has been extremely different from the ones before it.

Their self-titled EP, released in 2011, was nothing short of a record for a heartbroken, troubled teenager full of angst. In 2012 came the release of two outwardly different songs on a split 7” record with Michigan/Ohiobased band, Citizen. “Magnolia” was their first full-length record, released in 2013. A bit slower and with a significant amount of ‘90s influence in the vein of Rival Schools and the Promise Ring. Aside from exclusive songs being released on various compilations after the release of “Magnolia,” “Blue Dream” is the first real release from the band since April of last year.

The record is only three songs but it fills in every crack that Turnover has yet to touch up on in their songs.

Unlike their previously released songs, there are various similarities to bands like the Cure, the National and even Brand New. “Blue Dream”

is without a doubt the band’s most intricate batch of songs to date.

Hometown Turnover shows are an “iffy” sort of thing. They can be incredible or they can feel pretty empty – like something is missing. September 2014, was the “Blue Dream” record release at Shaka’s in Virginia Beach, Va.. Both Malfunction and Light Years traveled down from their hometowns to kickoff the tour appropriately, and the promoter picked up Keep and Drawback as the local acts to open the show.

“I’ve travelled all over the world with Turnover. I’ve learned that music scenes come and they go.

Doesn’t really matter where you are,” Dempsey continued. “When I was 15, I remember the Virginia Beach scene thriving and there was always a show to go to. Right now, things aren’t as happening. It’s nowhere close to being dead but I can definitely see the lack of touring acts coming through our area. We still have a great local scene but it’d be nice to see some people step up and get bigger acts into town that couldn’t fill the Norva or the Amphitheater.”

Thankfully, the show was packed.

A surprising amount of presale tickets were sold and the venue was very full, especially for a mixed-genre show. There were a ton of people inside to watch every band and that’s always something very satisfying to

see yourself. People acted accordingly, stagediving and singing along to each band, showing that Virginia Beach deserves to see as many touring bands come through the area as it used to.

Turnover has been around the United States a handful of times and took their first trip to tour England and mainland Europe earlier this year. To most bands, there isn’t much left after that. Music scenes in the rest of the world can be very hit-or-miss for international acts so most bands wouldn’t even bother in fear of losing money or other unfortunate happenings. That’s beside the point – what’s next for Turnover?

“This November, we are going

back to Studio 4 with Will Yip to record our second full-length record,” Dempsey said. “Once that comes out, we are going to tour hard all over the U.S. and overseas again. We are hoping to finally hit Japan and Australia this year.”

With all the recent good news from the band, the fans shouldn’t have to hold their breaths for more exciting updates. “Blue Dream” is available now, the second full-length is to be expected, and they will more than likely hit cities with fans of theirs on their next touring routes. Turnover hasn’t disappointed their fans thus far, so it’s safe to say that it won’t be happening any time soon.

ODU Pridefest

When asked what he was most proud about, he said, “It’s an amazing campus here. We have the ability to have an office on campus and put on something like PrideFest without the fear of someone opposing it. I’ve never felt that I had to hide who I am at ODU.” You definitely shouldn’t Allan. He ended it with saying, “I can be gay, fabulous, and proud!” I 100 percent agreed with him. This event was the perfect opportunity for people to come out and honestly… just have fun. Music was playing and I saw all the members of the Student Alliance run to the dance floor to dance.

Whether you were straight, lesbian, gay, or transgender, it just did not matter. Everyone was here to have a good time and to spread something positive and uplifting. Everyone was equal. I definitely felt welcomed at the PrideFest and was proud to see our school represent and support this cause.

Just recently, Virginia passed the same sex marriage law as well, letting many people to finally marry their loved one, which was a major step in the right direction for us in the world.

I am proud to say that I am a Virginian and to see this happen. I hope to see other states follow suit until all 50 states allow same sex marriages.

The month October has been a busy

Behind The Mic at ODU: Jar-El and T.Cooke, the relatable rappers Abdirahman “Dee” Mohamed Staff Writer PairoDiceFlow, an energetic group of rappres, are taking on everything, with no intentions of slowing down. The three-man group are diverse as musicians, and unify through bringing different aspects of music to the table. Paernell Cook (“T.Cooke”), Jarelle Lassiter (“JarEl”) and Kenneth Wright (“Dolo”) hope to rise up in the music world.

T.Cooke is from Newport News, Va. and is an ODU alumni who is currently working on a masters degree in digital lifespan and communications.

Jar-El is from Portsmouth, Va. and also went to ODU, graduating with a degree in communications. He’s also signed to Roxx Brand Record,s a subsidiary of the Mikey Roxx Brand.

I chatted with T.Cooke and JarEl about their rap careers’ and the future of PaiorDiceFlow.

Dee Mohamad: When did you guys begin to rap?

T.Cooke: We seriously began to rap… in 2010, but we weren’t in a group back then. There’s a third member of the group ParioDiceFlow, his name is Dolo. The group originally started off with those two.

I recently joined in the beginning of this year.

Jar-El: We’ve been making music now for almost two years with Cooke a part of it. Cooke has been a part of it in my mind for a long time, but we just made it official on our SoundCloud.

DM: What influenced you to rap?

TC: Honestly I grew up listening all types of music. My family used to play everything from R&B, hip hop and gospel. I actually got the influence from just being around my family.

My grandfather actually sings in different bands and choirs, so I think I kind of got my musical ability from him… I was always into hip hop though. As time went on it turned into something more serious.

When I linked up with these guys it was on some experimental type basis thing. It became real organic, and we started making tracks because it was something we liked to do.

We started doing more shows and got more buzz locally at ODU and in the 757.

JE: My influence started from middle school, and just back in the day when we used to freestyle at school. My favorite rapper back in the day was Young Buck when GUnit was poppin’. That’s what really sparked me.

What really influenced and helped me shape my style was early UGK, ‘90s era Snoop and Guru from Gangstarr. Those are my three biggest in-

fluences.

DM: Who would you compare yourself to musically?

TC: If I had to compare myself to any artist in the game right now, it would probably be a combination between, if you take 2-Chainz energy and the hypeness around his records, and you take the punchlines and lyrically content of Lil Wayne - put those qualities together. That’s how I describe my music.”

You would hear our music in the club or the radio. All of our music is radio friendly. My records are more of the hype energy.

JE: The obvious comparison I get is Big Krit, so I just kind of adopted that just because I’m from the country and I rap, so it comes off like that.

I got that riding music like Curren$y, but when I perform I get to that Wiz level because my energy is real high.

My Music is probably where the kids are going crazy at. Cooke’s more of the radio type and mine is more of wherever the kids are at.

If you see a group of kids going wild in front of the stage, I’m probably performing.

DM: Any projects out now?

JE: I got my EP out that I did in March called “House of EL” on Audiomack and SoundCloud.

I just recently dropped two tracks called “PartyOverHere” and “Elevate.”

TC: I just came out with the “Phil Jackson” music video in the beginning of September and it’s doing real well. Go support that and check it out on YouTube.

My latest project I’m getting ready to release in early 2015 called “The CookeBook.”

Me and Jar-El are working on a project but we currently don’t have a name for it. We’re trying to release in November with probably five songs.

DM: What message are you hopping people will receive from your music?

JE: The only thing we hope people take, because none of us curse in our music, we just want everyone to be positive and to take that positive vibe away with them when they hear our stuff.

Like Cooke said ”Just turn up. Everybody be live!”

TC: My message is that I just want to spread positive energy and overall entertain people. I want to make music that I can perform on the biggest of stages.

And like he [Jar-El] mentioned, we don’t curse in our music. I feel like

it’s an added element to our music because it’s all real friendly and commercially viable, and it can reach the youngest of young and oldest of old.

I want to make music where you can sit down with your family and watch what we presented to the world, and you don’t have to be uncomfortable playing it in front of your parents or grandparents or your children.

It’s for everyone and I feel like that will help us reach the greatest audience that we can.

DM: Where do you see your careers in five years realistically? Paint the picture for us.

JE: Hopefully in five years we’ll be on a world tour.

TC: Eventually we want to go on a world tour and that’s what we’re working towards.

We’re still unsigned and looking for bigger opportunities to really get on a bigger platform, but if we had to sign somewhere we’d probably do an indie type deal to get 100 percent creativity.

DM: What motivates you guys to do what you do with music?

JE: I know the motivation for me is, it’s fun. I always wanted people to hear me, and I never knew we’d be here now or get this far.

Now my motivation is just continue to spread that positivity and continue to keep people elevated.

TC: My motivation would probably be my family, because I always want to make my family proud of me at the end of the day.

Not only that but I want to be a voice for people who don’t have a voice, or those people who feel they lack the creativity or the talent to put their words together on a platform.

I want to represent that person who might not be confident in stepping up and saying what’s on their mind and I want to be that person who does that for them.

Somebody texted me when I released my new “Phil Jackson” video, and they texted me saying “keep doing what you’re doing because your creativity is speaking for a lot of people who feel like they can never do what you do.”

That alone showed me, conceptually, mentally and musically, that I’m going down the right path.

I’m going to continue to be humble and put God first, and he’s going to keep opening up doors for us that we’re going to walk through.

DM: Who’s a better lyricist between the two?

JE: Me personally, I don’t get into a rap debate with those two guys be-

cause they’re both lyrical. I’m lyrical too, but Cooke and Dolo, that’s more of their realm.

TC: I feel like that question can’t be answered because the three of us we have different styles, so it’s hard to compare.

I would say that Jar-El is more of the third eye, conscious conceptual genius, while Dolo is the more poetic type feel when he does his music.

And me; I’m just punch-line driven.

The three styles when put together complement each other.

DM: Who would you say is the best rapper out now & why?

TC: The best rapper talent wise would be Kendrick Lamar, based off of rapping ability. But overall artist I would say, Drake.

JE: I’ll go with Cooke on that. I feel like it’s Kendrick too. But if I had put my vote on my favorite I’d choose Curren$y.

DM: Any person to feature on a song, who would it be?

JE: Wiz! TC: I would say my idol, who I modeled my fashion and everything behind, would be Kanye. I’ve looked up to him since “College Dropout.”

DM: What are some things you would want people to know about

you? At the end of the day – before the music.

JL: Me personally, I’m just a kid with a dream and I don’t see my dream different from anyone else’s.

I’m not trying to be the “greatest” or nothing like that. I was just surprised when I started making music and people actually wanted to hear what I was making.

I’m just a dreamer.

TC: I want people to know that we as a group really have talent. I feel like what we’re doing is honing in on our God-given talent.

As the months go by I feel like we’re really meant to do this.

It started as a hobby but in the past few years has gotten serious and we can take this as far as anybody as long as we stay humble and stay focused.

I don’t ever want to get to the point or place where I’m arrogant or too good to relate to any person.

Jar-El and T.Cooke’s collaborative EP is set for release in November. As for ParioDiceFlow, the three man group continues to perform across the 757 taking on new heights and boundaries while bringing different dimensions to the stage.

Eric Barnett Staff Writer The genre of science fiction,orsci-fi, films has been around for many years.

From the widely believed first sci-fi film of 1902, “A Trip to the Moon,” to now, this is a genre that is here to stay. These films make the impossible, possible. They can show a future that closely resembles the one we will eventually live in or it can show the world in a perspective never seen or thought up for. There are an infinite amount of ideas one can show on screen when working in this genre.

The three films listed below depict science fiction in its truest, purest form.

“Her” One can call “Her” a game-changer when it comes to describing the science-fiction/romantic comedy hybrid. I have never seen another film

like this before. The story is set in the near future, 2025 to be exact and we follow the life of Theodore Twombly, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Theodore is lonely, anti-social and works for a business in Los Angeles that hires professional writers to write sincere and affectionate letters for people that lack the ability to do so.

He is depressed because of the ongoing divorce proceedings he has with his childhood sweetheart Catherine. To combat his depression he buys a talking operating system with artificial intelligence. This operating system is able to learn and evolve. In the process of installing the operating system Theodore decides to give it a female voice, which is voiced by actress Scarlett Johansson. The operating system names itself Samantha.

Through in-depth discussions about life and love, Theodore starts to form a strong bond with Samantha. That

bond becomes even stronger and Theodore decides to start dating the operating system. . It may seem weird to others but for Theodore, dating Samantha feels right.

“Event Horizon” The film is a scary and overall disturbing science fiction film based in outer space. The year is 2047 and the rescue vessel Lewis and Clark receives a distress signal from the starship Event Horizon. Event Horizon has been off the grid for seven years.

The starship was a secret government project gaining the ability to travel to the far recesses of the universe by making a wormhole. When the crew of Lewis and Clark investigate the starship they come to realize that all 18 crew members have disappeared and an evil presence has taken their place. It begins to mess with their heads causing chaos for the crew of the Lewis and Clark. “Event Horizon”

was able to combine the feeling of a horror film with the feeling of a science fiction film without letting the audience know. One could say that they are experiencing hell in that starship. The setting is within the starship as well as outside giving the audience less of a feeling of claustrophobia.

This movie will blow your mind with its concept.

“Edge of Tomorrow” My favorite film is “Groundhog Day,” so when I heard about a science fiction film that echoed the feel of that film,I knew I was going to see it. Tom Cruise stars as the main character, Major William Cage, a public officer as well as a former advertising executive. His job is to cover the combat as well as trying to talk more people into joining the cause. The overall plot of this film deals with humans trying to defeat an invading alien race called Mimics. The frontline is the last place

Major William Cage wants to be but he is, without his consent, put on the frontline, wearing a metal exoskeleton attached with guns that is used both for protection and defense. Major Cage kills a special type of Mimic as well as himself and in the process he is able to reset the day. He finds out that each time he is killed he is sent back to the exact same point in time the day before. In order to defeat the invading alien race Major Cage must find Sergeant Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt, and train with her because she is the only one that knows about his recently discovered ability.

It was comedic and dark at the same time. You lose count when it comes to the number of times Major Cage was killed and we see some of those deaths in a montage style format. If you loved Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day” then you will love Tom Cruise in “Edge of Tomorrow.”

El Beso de La Abeja: The Kiss of the Bee Natalie Sole Contributing Writer “El Beso de La Abeja,” or “The Kiss of The Bee,” presented by the Latin Ballet of Virginia, brought a splash of color to the Old Dominion University Theater on Oct. 16.

Red, yellow, green and blue fabrics sprawled across the stage as dancers spun the riveting tale of nature’s beauty.

Ana Ines King, the artistic and education director of the Latin Ballet of Virginia, was adamant on including diversity to the piece.

“We are from different places of the world,” King said. “I am from Colombia.”

She gestured to the dancers before her, “Spain… Philippines… her family is from Peru… she’s Dominican, she from Puerto Rico… and she is a Native American.”

The group came from Richmond and will continue to tour around the state for the next month.

“The Kiss of The Bee” mixed dif-

ferent backgrounds of dance.

“We are about multicultural and diversity through dance, so as part of the company, we present different cultures within Latin America and Spain,” King said.

“You bring in different dance styles… Flamenco, Reggaeton, Popping & Locking, Capoeira, Salsa…

In this particular piece it just really worked. The popping & locking was a representation of the insects,” she said.

The result is a distinctive take on the expression between the body and the music of nature said LaWanda Raines, a dancer who has been with the company for 10 years.

Three guest artists helped King to put the choreography together; Flamenco artists Francisco Mesa, (or El Mano) and Domingo Ortega, and Catherine Marie Davalos, director of dance at Saint Mary’s College of California in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The world was introduced to iconic characters like the Super Mario Bros, Pac-Man “the Cosby Show’s” Huxtables and the gang from “Cheers”.

Cambria Evans Contributing Writer It always seems like fall is the season where all of the new books are being released. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about some of these books.

“Heir of Fire” by Sarah J. Mass “Heir of Fire” is the third book in Sarah J. Mass’s “Throne of Glass” fantasy series. I think that “Throne of Glass” is by far, one of the best young adult fantasy series out there. Celaena Sardothien, one of the most famous assassins in all of the land, was being held prisoner in the salt mines of Endovier. Prince Dorian offers her freedom, but only under one condition: she is his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin, but she has to hide who she really is or she will be killed by the king or the other contestants.

I highly recommend this if you are trying to start a fantasy series, but

because it is filled with classic pop culture and references, and tells the story of a quest that a group of kids must embark on to transition from living in a cyber-world to entering the real world.

Wade Watts is a teenager living on Earth in 2044, a year where the fossil fuels and other natural necessities needed to survive are scarce. To combat this problem, he and the other inhabitants of the planet retreat into

the cyber world known as the OASIS. In OASIS, visitors can attend school, shop, interact with people and play, much like an MMOG (massive multiplayer online game).

In the book, James Halliday, the deceased creator of the OASIS, decided to leave his fortune to whoever can win “the hunt”; locate the three keys that he hid in the cyber world, and unlock the three gates to reveal the Easter egg and win.

Wade sees finding those keys as an opportunity to relieve himself from the tangles of poverty and make a better life for himself.

Tensions arise all over the OASIS as powerful and oppressive people attempt to sabotage and win “the hunt” for their own needs. What then ensues is an action packed adventure between worlds where people fall in love, make friends, make enemies and can even die inside and outside of the

Fall Book Releases 2014

you don’t want to start with an epic fantasy like “Lord of the Rings” by J. R. Tolkein and “Mistborn” by Brandon Sanderson. To be honest, I’ve had this book for a few months, but I haven’t exactly finished it. Now that the third book is out, I highly recommend marathon this series. The series order is “Throne of Glass,” “Crown of Midnight,” “Heir of Fire,” and there is also a book filled with novellas which can be counted as the prequel called “The Assassins Blade.”

“Afterworlds” by Scott Westerfeld Afterworlds” is about a girl named Darcy Patel who is about to go off to start college, but instead she defers college because the book she had penned was getting published and she had to start writing the sequel even though she didn’t have plans to write one. The book is basically two-in-one.

The chapters switch. One chapter will be Darcy and her struggle in the publishing industry and the other chapter

is the book that she wrote. When I first got ahold of this book in May, I immediately started reading it and I fell in love!

“The Retribution of Mara Dyer”

by Michelle Hodkin.

I’ve been looking forward to the release of this book for quite a while, but the release date kept getting pushed back, which angered a lot of readers.

“The Retribution of Mara Dyer” is the third book in the Mara Dyer trilogy.

A summary can’t adequately portray the story, but I’ll do my best.

Mara Dyer and her family moved to Florida after a terrible accident happened and three people, supposedly, died except for her. After this event, strange things start to happen to Mara. For instance, she wants someone to die, thinks about it and a few hours later it happens. To describe this trilogy in one word: Trippy. This series is full of plot twist and it will blow your mind. I can understand if some people aren’t exactly a big

fan of the series, because Mara is an unreliable narrator, but I do highly recommend this trilogy. Retribution officially comes out Nov. 4 this year.

“The Body Electric” by Beth Revis.

Ella Shepherd has dedicated her life to using her unique talent of entering people’s dreams and memories by using the technology that was developed by her mother. She helps people relieve their happy memories, but then strange things start to happen.

Ella starts to see things, impossible things. Images of her dead father and warnings of those she cannot trust.

The government recruits her to spy on a rebel group and use her ability to experience the memories of traitors.

Ella’s gift is enough to overthrow a corrupt government or crush a growing rebel group. She is the key to stopping this war, but doesn’t even know it yet.

Ernest Cline did an excellent job depicting escapism; what it’s like to not want to engage in the real world that awaits you from beyond the game console or computer screen.

He also showed that it is possible to disconnect and find your place in the world, no matter how terrifying it may seem.

released on Oct. 6 of this year. Up until a few days ago, I had no knowledge of Revis having a new book being published soon. Revis is a talented and an absolutely amazing author.

Her writing is poetic and lyrical. Her “Across the Universe” trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies of all time and because of that, I just know that I am going to love “The Body Electric.”

There are obviously more than four books being released this fall, but I wanted to bring attention, authors that I love that I feel like don’t get enough attention. I have read a series or at least one book by all of these authors. They are very talented and I highly recommend anything written by them. If these kinds of books aren’t exactly your cup of tea, look up other fall releases. You’ll find something. I guarantee it.

Jameis Winston- A cautionary Tale in the Making Nate Budryk Sports Editor We have all followed the saga that is Jameis Winston, starting with the sensational game he had to begin his career two years ago. However, despite his 19-0 record as a starter, and Florida State’s return to relevance as a product of Winston’s play, the main conversation about Winston is becoming less and less about football. It all started on Nov. 25, 2012.

A woman called police to report two men with what looked like a pistol.

Police responded to find Winston and a teammate with an air rifle.

This would be just the first of several transgressions that range from extremely serious to downright

comical.

The latter occurred on Apr. 29th, 2014. Winston was cited for shoplifting $32 worth of crab legs from a Tallahassee grocery store. The incident sparked discussions, jokes and many internet memes. However, not all of Winston’s alleged wrongdoings have all been dismissible as “college hijinx” or “a kid being a kid.” On Dec. 7, 2012, Winston was accused of raping a woman in an off campus apartment building near Florida State’s campus. An investigation was conducted by the Tallahassee Police Department, but no charges came about as a result. The university is currently conducting an investigation into the matter to see whether or not Winston violated the student

code of conduct. The results of that investigation may impact Winston’s playing time and potentially FSU’s national championship hopes.

Winston’s most recent transgression is a more traditional one. No crab legs were involved, but signing autographs for money allegedly was. According to reports, as many as 2,000 items signed by Winston appeared on a sports memorabilia site, eliciting questions from many.

Another investigation is under way for that incident as well.

So, the question becomes: When is enough, enough? How long will Florida State University give Jameis Winston a free pass? Todd Gurley, Georgia’s running back and, until recently, a legitimate Heisman

frontrunner, was accused of signing autographs for money and was subsequently suspended from the team indefinitely. Before those allegations, Gurley had an exemplary record, something Winston can’t say, yet he continues to suit up on Saturdays.

The problem with Winston playing isn’t the fact that he shouldn’t be allowed to sign his own name for money. It’s not that the rules are flawless, because they most certainly are not. It’s the fact that they are the rules, and until the NCAA is drastically overhauled, they will continue to be the rules, and Winston, as the most visible figure on one of the country’s most visible teams needs to understand that. Yes, he’s young.

Yes, he’s clearly immature, as many are at his age. However, Winston is not like the rest of us. When he committed to play quarterback for FSU, he committed to more than just throwing passes. His repeated failure to understand that he is in a position where behavior like the kind he has been exhibiting is not acceptable is going to be his downfall.

If he doesn’t have the “light bulb” moment where he understands that he has to be a leader both on off the field, he will continue to struggle.

It sounds cliché, but clichés exist for a reason: If he can’t come to that realization, nothing but trouble awaits.

Technology Because Race Car: What drives the ODU Society of Automotive Engineers Victoria Wood Staff Writer Members of Old Dominion University’s Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, participate in yearly competitions where they are responsible for building, testing, and fine tuning a kit car from the ground up.

ODU students may have seen these cars on the lawn in front of the new Engineering building before.

Under the banner of SAE, ODU has two separate teams: the Formula team and the Baja team. Elliott Clowdis and Karson Row, project leads for the Formula and Baja teams respectively, shed some light on their teams and their future projects.

To provide some background, ODU’s SAE group has been in place since 1979. Karson Row made it a point to share that ODU’s teams was the 20th oldest SAE team in the country. Suffice it to say that there have been plenty of engineers across the decades spending long nights building and kicking up gravel on long days to make this distinguished team proud.

Each year, the Formula and Baja teams build new cars for national SAE competitions. These competitions are make-or-break moments for the teams. In 2014, the Formula team placed 37th out of 109 competi-

tors in their event in Michigan. The Baja team placed 70th out of 199 competitors in their event in Illinois.

While the 2014 season may be complete, they are already hard at work on getting their 2015 cars ready for competition.

For those that might not understand the difference between Formula and Baja, they are completely separate classes for a reason. Formula cars in the SAE world are meant to sit low and go fast. These cars are designed with engine perfection in mind as well as aerodynamics.

In the SAE world, Baja cars are a whole different brand of fun. Designed with suspension in mind, the typical Baja car more closely resembles a dune buggy and is designed to handle off-road conditions.

According to Elliott and Karson, each year their teams construct a new prototype. While parts from previous year models may be sacrificed in order to build the new cars, they have been known to machine a new part or two in order to meet their needs.

When asked about some of the more colorful mishaps he had seen during his time with the Baja team, Karson smiled and said, “It’s not uncommon for these cars to roll. We’ve sheared tires during competitions too.”

Elliott’s tales of woe seemed to mir-

ror Karson’s as well, from blown tires to much more detailed fixes. “During a competition, one of the drivers redlined the car for a lap and the engine blew.” As he detailed afterwards, fixing mistakes like that is not particularly easy.

While it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that the majority of the team were mechanical engineering students, Karson explained that not everyone on the SAE teams were engineers.

“We have had members from other majors, computer science, math, science. Anyone that is interested in SAE is welcome to join.”

Elliott explained that one of the ways they stay active on campus and thank ODU for their generous contributions to the team is by giving back in the community. From charity events for the university to fundraising events for their teams, the Formula and Baja teams maintain an active presence in the ODU community.

When it comes to fundraising for their builds, Elliott explained that while a good deal of money comes from ODU they do maintain a Kickstarter for their team as well as reach out to their fellow students at ODU. “We’ve done fundraising events with Raising Canes and other restaurants on campus. We tend to have

great results within the ODU community.”

For those that have a love for automotive engineering, the challenges of SAE are outweighed by the rewards.

Members of the team gain real-world experience in the realm of automotive engineering in an environment that

Games to scare your pants off: Five affordable horror games Seann Barbour Staff Writer We all love a good horror game, but unfortunately our wallets often cannot accommodate this love. Luckily, the internet is rife with affordable games filled with fear.

5. “Don’t Get Spooked” Created by Jonathan Wojcik of Bogleech fame, “Don’t Get Spooked” is a browser game in which the player must navigate the spookiest house in the world via hyperlinks. The game is filled with grotesque illustrations of the house’s quirky inhabitants, from the dead lord Cthulhu who lurks in the inflatable swimming pool, to the “maggot of magnificent size” who works at the reception desk. As you browse the house, interacting with devilish creatures, radical skateboarding skeletons, and a possessed rake that literally whispers “unspeakably evil things,” you will inevitably get spooked.

4. “Yume Nikki” “Yume Nikki” (aka “Dream Diary”) is a free game developed with RPG Maker 2003. The simple premise is that the player is a young woman

that falls to sleep. What follows is a long, plot-light journey through a surrealist dreamscape. Throughout the course of “Yume Nikki,” players will explore bizarre worlds and evade dangerous creatures. It’s no surprise that “Yume Nikki” has become legendary for its creepy atmosphere.

3. “The Path” Developed by Tale of Tales, “The Path” is an artistic, psychological horror game available on Steam that loosely adapts the famous story of Little Red Riding Hood. Players choose from one of a number of different sisters to play as, and are placed on a dirt road in the woods with simple instructions: Go to grandma’s house, and stay on the path. Sure, players can follow these instructions and head straight to grandma’s, but it’s much more interesting to leave the path and explore the woods, where players will witness scenes from their characters’ pasts, surreal images, and a mysterious girl in white. Of course, players should also take care, because the wolf lurks somewhere in the woods…

2. “Eversion” Putting “Eversion” on a list of horror games is, admittedly, a borderline

spoiler. However, it is the game’s secret horror that led to its widespread attention, and even if a player went in expecting a cheerful game, it opens with a quote from horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, so it’s not like the game is trying to hide what it is. In “Eversion,” you play as a small flower man in a cheerful, “Mario”-like platform world. In certain spots, players can press a button to “evert,” and cause the world to shift to a different level of reality. However, as you go deeper and deeper, each level of the world becomes more twisted, until the bright colors and clouds are replaced with rotting corpses and waves of blood.

The game is available for free, with an HD edition for sale on Steam.

1. “Five Nights at Freddy’s” Recently released for $5 on mobile devices, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” took the internet by storm this past summer. It is a simple, yet insidiously terrifying game. Players take the role of a security guard in a ChuckE-Cheese’s-esque family restaurant.

Players are incapable of leaving the security office, and are only able to look at camera feeds and control the two doors and light switches that

run off the buildings power supply.

Unfortunately, there’s only a limited amount of power available each night, which players will want to conserve because the animatronics come alive and wander the restaurant each night.

Keep track of where those mechanical creatures are in your camera feed, because if even one of them gets inside your office, well… let’s just say you won’t be coming into work the next night.
