see ODU taking a role in promoting them,” said Colin Dalton, first year graduate student. Student’s exhibited high levels of passion while the public was able to view the projects and displays. Topics ranged from chemistry, biochemistry, computer science, mechanical and electrical engineering and animal sciences. “In today’s environmental world, it is very important to understand how fertilizers in our lake and pond waters impact fish living in it,” said Lauren Manuel, a student at Kemps Landing Magnet School in Virginia Beach, when talking about her project regarding the effects of different fertilizer types. On the other side of Webb, Nick Lowe, a student at Princess Anne Middle School in Virginia Beach, experimented to see if there is a difference in the level of protection various certified helmets provide their users. The project consisted of a comparison between “two NOCSAE certified helmets to see if there is a significant difference in how they protect from head injury,” said Lowe.

REINVENTING NORFOLK Waterside to get makeover By: David Bakhshaee Editor-in-Chief The City of Norfolk is currently adjudicating two very contradistinctive proposals to overhaul and revitalize downtown Norfolk’s waterfront. The first option, pitched by HL Development Group, proposes to build a conference center with a Ferris wheel, and would seek to connect the waterfront with downtown. The second option, pitched by Cordish Cos., proposes to markedly renovate waterside by building an open market area, 13 restaurants and an entertainment venue. Norfolk City Council members listen to proposal from HL Development Group.

Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army. By: David Bakhshaee Editor-in-Chief Old Dominion University students will experience a plethora of changes to the university’s dining menus in 2012. ODU Monarch Dining Services/Aramark announced that the spring menus will feature more than 100 new entrees and side dishes. Dishes will include Creole Fried Pollack, Seafood Newburg, Vegetable Enchilada with Red Sauce, and many other creative dishes including Jambalaya. The new spring menu will also appeal to Vegans and Vegetarians. “Based on our students’ feedback, we are excited to introduce new international flavors and creative twists on traditional student favorites, as well as vegan and vegetarian options,” said Janet Mclaughlin, Resident District Manager for ODU Monarch Dining Services/Aramark.
San Diego based non-profit, Invisible Children, released a half-hour documentary about a Ugandan warlord. Their intention was to make Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, a universally recognized name. “I think Kony will go the way of all mass murders, the video may well help to accelerate that process. More importantly though, I believe the video will help prevent future Kony’s”. The LRA is a brutal, particularly infamous army that is known for recruiting its army through force and abduction. They are also known for licentiously raping, mutilating and massacring their victims. In October 2011, President Barack Obama ordered 100 U.S. troops to the Central African region to assist in hunting down Kony. Obama made it clear that the troops would be “combat ready”, however would only engage aggressively if acting out of self-defense. The film, “Kony 2012” has been viewed by more than 52 million viewers. “I think regardless of the praise and criticism surrounding the film, it is inspiring to see the role young people play; responding and raising awareness of a long neglected part of the world,” said Dalton. REINVENTING NORFOLK continued from “Norfolk” (A1)
“I think the proposal that keeps Waterside is better,” said Luke Watson, third year economics student at Old Dominion University. There are two other options on the table. The two propositions could be combined or they both could be scrapped. As a part of ODU’s Model United Nations group, Watson, Secretary General at the time, ran their yearly conference at the Waterside Sheraton in Norfolk. The event brought together over 1,000 high school students in a debate style conference. “We need a better Waterside with more food and things to do. That was actually the biggest complaint we got from school sponsors in our feedback session,” said Watson. In an interview with The Virginian-Pilot, David Cordish, president of HL Development Group said “Waterside needs to be refreshed.” “Downtown already has numerous conference centers,” said Colin Dalton, first year graduate student at ODU. “Ferris wheels are for carnivals.” No matter which scenario is chosen, or if both are dismissed, Norfolk’s waterfront seems destined for reform.

Monarchs Fall 68-51 to the Dragons of Drexel By: Jake Ullrich Assistant Sports Editor The Monarchs walked off the court Sunday night the second best team. Poor shooting and turnovers plagued the Monarchs, but ultimately the Dragons staggering defense and impressive play led to a 68-51 defeat for Old Dominion. The team shot a miserable 33.3 percent from the field and an even worse 16.7 percent from three. Kent Bazemore finished 6 for 20, including 0 for 5 from behind the arc. “They did [defensively] the same thing every team pretty much did, they made me work” Bazemore said. “My shot didn’t fall today and that’s pretty much what happened. “They all felt good, they just didn’t go in.”
The Monarchs were immediately put in a hole when the Dragons started the game on a 9-0 run. The team who couldn’t miss Saturday, couldn’t make Sunday. Dmitri Batten’s three-pointer finally put the Monarchs on the board. The team struggled to run any type of offense, too frequently relying on a Nick Wright turn-around in the post. Bazemore, nor Donte Hill, both who excelled Saturday, found little offensive flow. Luckily the Monarchs continued to play exceptional defense and kept the game within reach, down 27-17 at half time. The Monarchs, who went on a 12-4 run to start the half against Delaware, found themselves down 16 quickly into the half. Instead of allowing the game to
get completely out of hand, the team went on a 8-0 run to bring the lead back to single digits. The crowd was on their feet and it seemed the Monarchs could get back in the game. A smart time out by Drexel’s coach Brusier Frazier settled the Dragons down and initiated a 9-2 run to double the lead. The lead only grew from there. It was the last game of an exceptional career for Kent Bazemore. He fouled out with 1:10 left and left to an ovation from the crowd. “They really made Kent work,” coach Blaine Taylor said of Bazemore’s performance. “Kent’s played so well the past month that he got a lot of attention.” The Dragons played the Rams of VCU for the Championship.
